Carl Lee Hopper, age 68, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at his residence, in Konawa.
He was born on March 9, 1941, in Wolf, to Omar Gilham and Lela Johnson. He worked for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department and he was a Police Officer for the Konawa Police Department from 1985 until his retirement in 2002.
He married Barbara Wheeler on Aug. 4, 1984, in Konawa.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; sons, Vincent and Walter Hopper, both of Springfield, Mo., Nicholas, Stanley, and Sterling Hopper, all of Konawa; daughters, Cecilia Hopper, of Springfield, Mo., Jennifer Hopper, of Tulsa, and Tammie Hopper, of Ada; brother, Phillip Harjo, of Noble; sister, Melanie Samples, of Shawnee; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beverly Pratt; and sisters, Georgia Harjo and Alice Matthews.
A wake service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Rock Springs Indian Baptist Church, in Sasakwa.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at the church. Houston Tiger and Jimsey Harjo will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers are: Nicholas Hopper, Sterling Hopper, Stanley Hopper, Donavan Castleberry, Logan Castleberry, Lucian Wheeler, Michael Sheets, and Adam Wheeler.
Lee Horne
Lee Horne was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on July 9, 1937 and departed this life at his home in Ada, Oklahoma on September 21, 2009, at the age of 72.
Lee was the son of William Chester and Eva May (Hawthorne) Horne. He graduated from Holdenville High School and attended the University of Oklahoma on a football and basketball scholarship. He transferred to East Central State College and continued to play football for East Central until he received his undergraduate degree. He was married to Judy Ruble in Ada on June 3, 1962. He was football coach at Pawnee, Oklahoma from 1962 to 1964 and then continued his coaching career at Cameron University from 1964 to 1970. He earned his master’s degree in 1966. In 1970 he moved to Ada and became a New York Life Insurance Agent. He remained an active and well-respected agent until his death. He had served in the Oklahoma National Guard, was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Ada, and was well known for being a driving force for both Ada High School and East Central University Athletics.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Chester Horne.
Lee will be missed greatly by his professional associates, his friends and his family, all of whom respected and loved him.
Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Judy Horne, of the home; two sons and daughters in law, Steve and Allison Horne, of Ada and Jay and Kenda Horne, of Ada; one brother and his wife, Bill Horne, Sr. and Twylah Horne, of Ada; three grandchildren, Cameron Horne, of Ada and Zachary and Joshua Horne, of Ada; nephew and nieces, Bill Horne, Jr., of Ada, Jennetta Bagwell, of Ada, and Jeonone Kessler, Edmond
In addition, Lee is also survived by his close friend, associate and daily "coach", Ken Johnson and his wife June, of Ada.
The memorial service will follow the private family burial. His memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 23, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, in Ada, with Rev. Pat Kilby officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.
Harriet Hoselton
Seminole resident Harriet Susan Hoselton, age 71, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at her home in Seminole.
She was born Jan. 29, 1938. in Florence, Ariz. to Charles Albert and Georgia (Kinne) Hardaway.
She graduated from Camelback High School in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She spent most of her life in Tucson, Ariz. and moved to Seminole 10 years ago.
She is survived by her sons, Casey Hoselton, of Seminole and Bert Hoselton, of Seminole; daughters, Patty Myers, Dotty Hoselton and Beth Jenkins, all of Seminole; eleven grandchildren; and one great-grand child.
Preceding her in death is her son, Dale Orange.
Viewing begins Thursday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, in Seminole.
Casket bearers will be Matt Buresh, Ryan Hoselton, Roger Torres, B.J. Jenkins, Bradley Davis and Gene Estes. Honorary bearers will be Tyler and Kyle Hoselton and Josh Norman.
Mary Hoskins
Former Konawa resident Mary Georgia (Tipton) Hoskins, age 79, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Colonial Estates Nursing Home, in Shawnee.
She was born Aug. 17, 1930, in Wewoka, to Leon and Mary L. (Troutman) Tipton. She was a graduate of Konawa High School. She married Vernon Hoskins on May 15, 1947, in Konawa. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was the Mayor of Asher, for four years.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Roger Hoskins, Scott Hoskins, and Vernon Hoskins, Jr., both of Asher; brother, Tommy Joe Williams, of Riverside, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Claude Maxwell and Orvil "Doc" Tipton; and sisters, Inez Hooker, Etta Lee Nash, Lawanda Scott, and Eunice Barnett.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, in Konawa. Ruby Neal York will officiate, and burial will follow at Vista Cemetery, in Konawa. Visitation is Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.
John Howard
John Campbell Howard, age 66, passed away at his home after losing his fight with cancer, on Feb. 15, 2009.
He was surrounded by his loving and loyal wife, the former Carolyn June Townsend of Holdenville, who he married in 1962; his three children, Marya Raphael Howard Fleming, her husband, Dr. James C. Fleming, M.D. and their son, Christian Dane Fleming; daughter, Scarlett Antoinette Howard; and son John Campbell Howard II.
After growing up and graduating from Wewoka High School in 1960, he attended the University of Oklahoma where he received a BA Degree in Journalism in 1965. He then attended and was graduated from Oklahoma City University School of Law, with a Juris Doctorate in 1969, where he was named Class President and the 1969 Outstanding Senior Law Student.
He began his legal career in the Oklahoma Attorney Generals’ Office in 1968. With the approval of the Attorney General, he conceived and became the Editor of the first two volumes of the Opinions of the Oklahoman Attorney General.
Later, he served two years as the First Assistant District Attorney for Canadian County before embarking on a successful career in private practice from 1971 to 2002, in El Reno and later Edmond, when illness forced his retirement.
While he was in practice, he served as President of the Canadian County Bar Association three different years, acted as State President of the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and served on the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Public Relations and Camera in the Courtroom committees.
Civically, he served as President of the El Reno United Fund, Board of Directors of the El Reno Chamber of Commerce, Co-Founder of Youth and Family Services and El Reno Summer Recreation Board of Directors. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish Council and the Knights of Columbus.
His service to his country was always important in his life. He joined A Battery, 171st FA, 45 Infantry Division on Feb. 5, 1957, in Wewoka, and was retired from the Oklahoma Army National Guard on May 15, 1997 as a Colonel.
During his career, he served in various assignments in artillery and infantry before being commissioned as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp. Later he acted as the Staff Judge Advocate of the 45th Infantry Brigade before being appointed the Judge Advocate General of the State Area Command in June 1979. He was then named to the dual job as the State Judge Advocate over all state military legal assists in August 1980 by then Governor George Nigh. He continued in that position under Governors Bellmon, Walters and Keating until his retirement.
Among his many awards and declarations, he was the recipient of the United States Army Legion of Merit, the Army Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Humanitarian Medal, the Oklahoma Distinguished Service Medal and the Oklahoma Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was also recognized by the Oklahoma Legislature with a Proclamation for his services at his retirement.
His principal hobby was wildlife and nature photography. He also had a deep and abiding interest in early American history. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Jamestowne Society, Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters, Order of Founders and Patriots of America, Military Order of World Wars and Military Order of Stars and Bars, 45th Infantry Division Association and the 180th Infantry Association.
He was born to Robert G. and Margaret A. Howard on July 4, 1942, both of whom preceded him in death, along with a sister. He is survived by five brothers and three sisters.
His cheerful personality and beautiful spirit will be missed by his wife, children and all who knew him.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at Baggerley Funeral Home Chapel, in Edmond with Father John R. Metzinger officiating. He was laid to rest at the Holdenville Cemetery.
Linda Howell
Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident Linda Leona Howell will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, in Wewoka, with Spiritual Warrior Leon Bruno and Veta Bruno officiating.
Honorary bearers will be Timmy Weeden, Ted Watson, Jr., W.E. Howell, Jr., Sammy Howell, Bill Hobia, III and Edmond Howell.
Final resting place will be in Center, Colo. Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, of Wewoka.
Linda Leona (Slater) Howell departed this life on June 5, 2009, at her residence in Wewoka, at the age of 54.
She was born on February 14, 1955, in Monte Vista, Colo., to Robert Eugene and Rena Gail (Crockett) Slater. She was reared in Colorado, California, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. She worked as a nurse’s aid in nursing homes for several years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, W.E. "Sonny" Howell, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Tamra and Timmy Weeden, of Seminole, Jay Shalin Rainwater, of Weatherford, Shelly and Ted Watson, Jr., Sheila Wood, of Bowlegs, Anita Howell, of Konawa, Mary and Darnell Vaughn, of Dallas, Texas, Wynona and Clyde Simpson, of Shawnee, Alisha Howell, of Konawa, and Johnnie Howell; sons and daughters-in-law, William Edward, Jr. and May Howell, of Tecumseh, Samuel Edward and Rachel Howell, of Pink, Tommy and Katherine, of Konawa and Daniel Ray Howell, of Konawa; 13 brothers and sisters; 47 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Linda was a self-less caring person of great strength who will by missed by all.
Robert Howes
Robert Gene "Bob" Howes, age 44, of Maud, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in Seminole. He was born Jan. 14, 1966, in Richmond, Mo., to Lester Eugene "Gene" Howes, Sr. and Mary Ann (Boley) Howes.
Howes attended school in Missouri before moving to Maud, five years ago. He was a carpenter who specialized in roofing.
He is survived by his brothers, Larry Joe Groves, of Lexington, Mo., and Lester Eugene Howes, Jr., of Maud; and sister, Grace Starks, of Illinois.
Howes is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ricky Allan Howes.
Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, in Seminole.
Private family services are scheduled for a later date.
Kenneth Howland
Graveside Services for seven year old Kenneth Ray Howland are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 at Tiger Family Cemetery south of Wewoka..
Howland died Sunday, August 2, 2009, due to a drowning accident.
Howland was born February 8, 2002 in Cushing to Albert John Howland and Lena Beth (Klingsmith) Madlon.
Howland had completed the first grade at Rib Lake Elementary School in Rib Lake Wisconsin..
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and swimming, and was a very active, cheerful happy child.
Preceding him in death are his paternal grandparents.
Survivors include his father Albert Howland of Wewoka, and his mother Lena Beth Madlon of Wisconsin, brother James Joe Albert Rowland, sisters Angel Renee Howland and Alexandraea Joline Howland all of Wewoka, grandfather James Joe Klingsmith, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Williams, Kenneth Williams, Kevin Roberts, Andy Smith, and William Wallace.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka.
Bobbie Hubbard
Lifelong Seminole resident Bobbi Mae (Wilker) Hubbard passed away on Sept. 7, 2009, at Boyce Manor Nursing in Holdenville, at the age of 67.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1941, in Seminole, Oklahoma to Robert Alvin and Sally Mae (Lively) Wilker.
She was a retired kindergarten teacher in Seminole, she retired in 2002. She was a member of the National Educators Association and the Seminole County Retired Educators Association.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Seminole.
She leaves to cherish her memories a daughter and son-in-law: Karen and Jackie Allen Jones of Seminole and one son, Gerald Hubbard of Chicago, Illinois, one brother, Charles Francis Wilker of Hennessey, Oklahoma, two grandchildren, Levi Croce and Jesse Jones. Friend and companion, Ralph Castor of Seminole and her beloved best friend Merri Shawver, as well as the father of her children, Bill Hubbard also survives her.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father and a sister, Patsy Hawkins.
The family would like give special thanks to all the caregivers that have taken such wonderful care of Bobbi over the past few years.
