Kenneth Warren Matthews, age 75, of Konawa, died Wednesday, March 04, 2009, at Sunset Estates Nursing Home, in Tecumseh.
Matthews was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Hazel Community near Konawa, to William Henry Matthews and Vera Juanita (Fink) Matthews. He married Irlene McClead in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sept. 22, 1997. He was the owner of M&M Auto Center and M&M Tank Trucks.
He is survived by his wife, Irlene Matthews, of the home; son, Kenneth "Butch" Matthews, of Konawa; three daughters, Debbie Garner, of Konawa, Carol Postman, of Ponca City, and Melanie Stogner, of Gans; sister, Jo Nell Coleman, of Bristow; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Vera Matthews; first wife, Mary Matthews; and one brother, Doyle Matthews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 6 at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, in Konawa. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery. Ellis Gregg will officiate.
Pallbearers are Ronnie Matthews, Kevin Matthews, Dewayne Hagan, Larry Coleman Jr., Bruce Coleman, Mike Coleman, and Lewis Coleman. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Morris, Bobby Matthews, and Larry Coleman.
James McAlvain
James Walter "Jay" McAlvain, 71-year-old longtime educator and Seminole resident passed from this life Jan. 19, 2009, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, in Oklahoma City. He was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Oologah, to parents William Polk McAlvain and Sara Louise (Woodside) McAlvain.
Jay graduated from Oologah High School in 1956 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 and his Master’s degree in 1964, both from Northeastern University, in Tahlequah. Prior to moving to Seminole Jay taught at Oologah Public Schools and at the Oklahoma Military Academy, in Claremore. He also taught at Joplin Public Schools in Missouri.
Jay married Jacqueline "Jackie" Lynn Fox on June 8, 1963, in Alba, Mo. The couple moved to Seminole 39 years ago from Owasso. Jackie taught at Seminole Public Schools while Jay began teaching in the Language Arts Division at Seminole Junior College, he started there in 1971 when the college classes were being held at the local Presbyterian Church during the construction of the current campus.
As an English Composition teacher, and later a Speech instructor, Jay influenced the lives of thousands of students. In addition to his work in the classroom, he was an honorary member of the athletic department. He worked to support the efforts of the entire campus, serving in any capacity needed, including bus driver, scorekeeper, assistant coach and cheerleader.
Jay taught at Seminole State College for 27 years before his retirement in 1998. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, in Oologah. Jay was also a member of the Higher Education Alumni Association, Oklahoma Coaches Association, Seminole High School Booster Club and the Seminole State Booster Club. He was honored by inclusion in "Who’s Who Among College American University Instructors, " and selected as an "Outstanding Young Educator of the Southwest." Jay was also involved in the Seminole Chamber of Commerce and the Seminole Elks Lodge where he was a Past Exalted Ruler.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline "Jackie" McAlvain, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Russell and LaDonna McAlvain, Brian and Sherri McAlvain, and Brad McAlvain, all of Seminole; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Mary McAlvain, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Harold and Pat McAlvain, of Nacona, Texas; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sally and Ed Lippert, of Willow, Calif.; four grandchildren, Chad, Paige, Lauren and Brynna McAlvain, all of Seminole. Jay is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, in Seminole. Dr. Tommy Clark will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, in Seminole.
The family has requested that donations be made to the athletic department, at Seminole State College, in memory of Jay. Donations can be sent to Seminole State College, Educational Foundation, c/o Jay McAlvain Memorial, P.O. Box 351, Seminole, 74868.

Tanya McCary
Seminole resident Tanya Marie McCary died Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at her home at the age of 47.
She was born Jan. 21, 1962 in Ventura County, California to Bart and Doris Virginia (Westman) Cassillas.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Dean Nester, Jr., of Port Hueneme, Calif. and Jason Jennings, of Seminole; daughter, Tristan Alexander, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and sister, Raelee Keefover, of Ventura, Calif.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Roger McCracken
Roger Dale McCracken, 46 year-old, longtime Maud resident passed from this life Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Integris Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City. He was born March 19, 1963, in Oklahoma City, to parents Doyle Ray McCracken and Sue (Cripps) McCracken.
Roger attended Maud Public Schools and then worked as a forklift operator for "Blue Bell Jean Company" in Seminole. He was affiliated with the Holiness Church and loved to work on lawn mowers and loved to make other people happy. Roger never seemed to meet a stranger and always greeted everyone with a handshake and a friendly smile.
Roger leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Doyle and Sue McCracken of Maud, Oklahoma; two sons, Christopher Dale Heffley, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma and Joshua McCracken, of Holdenville, Oklahoma; two daughters, Dalelynn Heffley, of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Teisha McCracken, of Holdenville, Oklahoma; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and his wife Terry McCracken, Danny and his wife B.J. McCracken, Johnny and his wife Sherry McCracken, all of Maud, Oklahoma, Barry and his wife Melody McCracken, of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Sam and his wife Cathy McCracken, of Fittstown, Oklahoma; one sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and her husband Glenn Harris, of Saint Louis, Oklahoma; a special loving friend, Judy Cloud, of Maud, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; he is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and a host of other family and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and by one nephew, Tyler McCracken.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, June 8, 2009 at Cummings Cemetery, in Maud, Oklahoma. Rev. Carl Upton will officiate the service assisted by Sister Linda Upton.
Casket Bearers will be: Terry McCracken, Barry McCracken, Danny McCracken, Sam McCracken, Terry McCracken, Jr. and Bobby McCracken.
Services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home, in Maud, Oklahoma.
Rebecca McLeister
Rebecca Rowena (Pate) McLeister, age 77, and a former resident of Konawa, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Grace House of Lubbock, in Lubbock, Texas.
She was born Feb. 4, 1932, to William Allen Pate and Sarah Agnes (Thomas) Pate, in Bowling Green, Ky. She earned a Master’s Degree and was an elementary school teacher. She taught school for 28 years in Hobbs, N.M. and she was an artist. She married Kenneth McLeister.
She is survived by her son, Steve McLeister, of Wolfforth, Texas; daughter, Donna McLeister of Hobbs, N.M.; brother, Mitchell Pate, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth McLeister; parents; brother, Ervin Pate; and sister, Essie Lea.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, May 18, at Swearingen Funeral Home, in Konawa. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Grace McMullen
Grace Lee Evans McMullen age 92, of Wewoka, passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, in Wewoka.
Grace Lee was born in Wewoka, on Aug. 1, 1916, to Birt and Clara Mae (Bates) Bunnell.
McMullen attended school at Sam's School, north of Wewoka.
In June 1986 she married Homer McMullen, he preceded her in death, in 2003.
Grace worked for J.C. Penney's Company for 22 years and retired in 1978, after which she worked as a provider and as a meter reader for the rural water district.
McMullen was a member of First Baptist Church, in Wewoka since 1948, having taught Sunday School for many years.
Survivors include one son, Charles N. Evans Jr., of Seminole; two brothers, Harold Bunnell, of Valley Springs, Calif. and James Paul Bunnell, of Konawa; one sister, Edna Shankles, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mac V. Bunnell; two husbands, Charles V. Evans Sr., in 1981, and Vernie McLeod in 1984; a daughter, Dorothy Mae Evans in 1948; and her sister, Imogene Meguiar.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Chapel with burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
Jerry Medlock
Former longtime Seminole resident Jerry Wayne Medlock passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2009 in Healdton at the age of 65.
He was born on September 8, 1944 in McCurtain, to Woodrow Wilson and Dovie Dolly (Reece) Medlock. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School west of Seminole, he loved horses, hunting and enjoyed play day activities he also loved the lake and fishing.
He enjoyed his kids and grandkids they were very special to him. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard from 1964-1969.
He was a former member of a motorcycle club. He worked for Koch Oil Company and Bigheart Oil Company and later worked for Wilburn Trucking Company in Shawnee where he retired.
He was married to Linda Yarbrough of Earlsboro and she was the mother of his 3 children that they raised together.
He leaves to cherish his memories a special friend and companion, Virginia Martin of Healdton; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Daniel and Roxanne Douglas of Oklahoma City, and Michael Wayne Medlock of Earlsboro; daughter, Jerri Lynn White of Earlsboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Jack and Colleen Medlock of Seminole and Gary and Sally Medlock of Wewoka; three sisters and a brother-in-law: Elena Silas of Seminole, Vonda and Bill Culbertson of Tulsa, and Robin Hall of Edmond.
He is also survived by five grandchildren; Chance Medlock, Emily White, Terry White, Melissa Douglas, Christian Wolfe-Medlock and several nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Dovie Medlock and one grandson, Josiah White.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roy Robertson officiating assisted by Jack Medlock.
Interment will follow at Little Cemetery, Little, north of Seminole.
Geraldine Meeks
Geraldine "Jerry" Meeks, age 82, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Okemah.
She was born March 30, 1927, in Culp, Ark., to Robert R. and Ollie Mae (Ramey) Whisnant.
She had been a longtime resident of the Okfuskee and Seminole County area. She and Bill Meeks were married in 1943. She devoted many years teaching children through Sunday school and belonged to the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen Rose, of Shawnee; brothers, Robert Whisnant, of Drumright, and James Whisnant, of Bearden; sisters, Imogene, of Tulsa, Dorothy Crow, of Shawnee, and Joyce Parker, of Odessa, Texas; seven grandchildren;and several great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Betty Mae Xaiver; sister, Evelyn Hill; and brothers, Vernon and Alvie Whisnant.
Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov.25, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Little Cemetery in Seminole County.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: Vick Johnston, Tommy Griffin, Mike Griffin, Jimmy Whisnant, Bobby Whisnant, and Jordan Brewer.
Honorary Bearers include: Billy Whisnant and Johnny Underwood.
Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Eddie and Nancy Dodson and assisted by Steve Brewer.
Doris Melton
Seminole resident Doris Mae (Chilcote) Melton, age 69, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at OU Medical Center, in Oklahoma City. She was born June 18, 1940, in Stillwater, to Thomas James Chilcote and June (Molosh) Chilcote.
She attended Seminole Schools and was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, south of Seminole. She was a homemaker and fished.
She is survived by her sons, Rick Melton, of Seminole, Mike Melton, of Magnum, Terry Melton, of Seminole; daughters, Donita Burgess, of Seminole, and Teresa Birdwell, of Seminole; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Jim Chilcote.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at Little Cemetery, north of Seminole. Rev. Ron Duvall will officiate the service.
Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
Frances Melton
Frances Addie (Northcott) Melton, 85 year-old, lifelong Seminole resident passed from this life Saturday, September 12, 2009 at her home in Seminole. She was born May 14, 1924, in Seminole, Oklahoma to parents Eugene Northcott and Madie (Collier) Northcott.
Frances graduated from Bowlegs High School and later married Robert A. Melton on July 30, 1941. They moved to Borger, Texas where Frances was a store manager for Levine’s Department Store for ten years. In the early 1970’s the couple returned to Seminole where they were members of the First Baptist Church in Bowlegs, Oklahoma.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Robert A. Melton of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard D. Melton and his wife Gayla of Seminole; one son-in-law, Milton Hoff of Stinnett, Texas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat Ward of Ada, Oklahoma, Norma Jean Rice and her husband Bill of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Joy Stevens and her husband Mike of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Joyce Smith of Corona, California; seven grandchildren, Tommy Hoff, Tammy Snider, Robert Melton, Terry Melton, Amy Causey, Misty Melton and Christy Earhart; eleven great grandchildren, Spencer Hoff, Logan Hoff, Tyler Hoff, Brittany Snider, Brandon Snider, Ryan East, Robby Melton, Michael Melton, Cody Melton, Crystal Schimming, Lacey Schimming, Laekyn Causey, Bryan Thornbury, Wyatt Thornbury, Cameryn Earhart and Sydnee Earhart; Frances is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends.
Her parents and one daughter, Gaylene Hoff who died in 2002, precede Frances in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2009, at the Little Cemetery Chapel located at Little Cemetery just north of Seminole. Rev. Todd Henson will officiate the service.
The casket will remain open until service time and will not be opened following the service.
