Jesse Nutter, Jr.

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Jesse Thurman Nutter, Jr. are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, in Seminole with Dr. Tommy Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery with services under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.

Jesse passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the age of 92, at Seminole Estates Nursing Home, in Seminole. He was born April 7, 1917 to Jesse and Delsia (Williams) Nutter, in Montpelier, Indiana.

On August 26, 1937 in Stonewall, Oklahoma, he married Corene Gibson.

Over his life, Jesse worked for many years in the oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas. Most of those who worked with or under Jesse appreciated him as a boss and a friend. He retired from KWB Oil Property Management, in Seminole. He loved fishing, camping, and going in his travel trailer to area lakes.

Jesse loved his family, church, working in the oil field, visiting with friends and enjoying life.

His parents and one sister, Martha Wilson, preceded Jesse in death.

He is survived by his wife of more than 71 years, Corene; one sister, Joan Douglas, of Paden; three daughters, Sue and husband Dale Streater, of Kellyville, Kaye and husband Jimmie Allen, of Jones, and Beth and husband Jeff Davis, of Little; and one son, Jim and wife Donna Nutter, of Seminole. Also surviving Jesse are 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be: Jay Allen, Greg Nutter, Chad Streater, Jesse Davis, Matt Allen, and Dirk Streater.

Honorary bearers will be: Shawn Streater, Clay Streater, Jason Nutter and Owen Davis.

Vera O’Dell

Vera Dean (Eddy) Shoemaker O’Dell, 86 year-old longtime Maud resident passed from this life Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Moore Medical Center in Moore, Oklahoma. She was born July 16, 1922 in Maud, Oklahoma to parents Thomas Jefferson "T.J." Eddy and Avo (Longley) Eddy.

Vera Dean grew up in Maud and attended Maud High School. Following High School she married the father of her children Paul Shoemaker, he preceded her in death on December 30, 1982.

She had made her home in Maud for many years while working in Seminole at "Humpty Dumpty" super market as a cashier until her retirement in 1975. Later she married her second husband Sam O’Dell in September of 1991 in Maud, Oklahoma.

Together they enjoyed their lives together living in their "Town House" they jokingly called their home in Norman and weekends at her "Country Home" in Maud. This September they would have celebrated their 19th Anniversary.

Vera Dean is survived by her husband, Sam O’Dell, she cared for him until health wouldn’t allow her and he became a resident of The Sterling House of Norman, Oklahoma. Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Don Unruh, of Snyder, Texas; one brother, Tommy G. Eddy, of Franklin, Louisiana; one sister, Wilma Smith, of Spavinaw, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Donna and her husband, Jay Kincaid, Kristi Unruh, Lori Unruh, Jake and his wife Mandy Unruh, Mardee and her husband Caprice Vaughn and John Ryan Shoemaker; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews including a special niece Pam Underwood, of Moore, Oklahoma. Vera Dean is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends who she loved dearly.

Vera Dean is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Paul Shoemaker (12-30-1982); one son, John Shoemaker (4-18-2003); and by three sisters, Norvella Chase, Wanda Richards and Margaret Cole.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Westside Church of Christ, located at 726 McGee Drive, in Norman, Oklahoma. Phillip Johnson and Leon Dennis will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma with Jay Kincaid officiating.

Casket Bearers will be the Deacons of Westside Church of Christ.

Visitation will be held at Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud, Saturday and Sunday from Noon until 8 p.m. and Monday at the Westside Church of Christ in Norman from 10 a.m. until service time.

Services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home, located at the corner of Broadway & Monroe in Maud, Oklahoma. Phone 405-374-2424

Custer O’Neal Jr.

Custer Monroe O’Neal, Jr., age 79, of Tulsa, died Saturday, June 20, 2009.

He was born January 1, 1930, in Wewoka, to Custer Monroe O'Neal, Sr. and Cora Cowan.

He is survived by his children, Cecilia Hemme, Sharon O'Neal, Marcia Ozkan, Michael O'Neal, and Daniel O'Neal; grandchildren; brother, Jon David O'Neal; and sister, Cora Jane (Corky) McConnell.

O’Neal attended Depew High School, and graduated from St. Gregory's High School. He attended classes at OSU. He served in the Army National Guard for 9 years. He was a Korean War veteran who served with the 3rd infantry (Audi Murphy) division, received four bronze stars, and reached the rank of Master-Sgt. No one under his command lost their life in active duty.

He married Rosita Foote, in 1954. He worked for the Carnation Milk Co. before joining the Post Office as a mail carrier. He served as the state treasurer for the Postal Service Union, and retired as an assistant supervisor.

He donated his body to the OSU Medical Center. His memorial mass will be held Wednesday, June 24, at Madalene Church, 3188 E 22nd St S., at 6 p.m., followed by a reception in the hall where cake and ice-cream will be served at his request.

Steven Ortega

Steven Daniel Ortega, age 21, died Feb. 13, 2009, in Norman. He was the beloved son of Lina Ortega and C.B. Elder, the cherished grandson of Dora Young, of Seminole and Pablo and Kathy Ortega, of Midwest City, and the much-loved nephew of Ellen (Cricket) Ortega and Robert Keller, of Norman.

Steven was an enrolled member of the Sac & Fox Nation of Oklahoma and was the great-grandson of Frances Walker Coker. His great-grandfather was Thomas Coker, who was of Seminole and Creek heritage. Through his grandfather Pablo Ortega, he was of Puerto Rican descent as well.

Steven attended the Norman public schools and graduated from Norman’s Dimensions Academy in 2006. He also attended Oklahoma City Community College. He had a great passion for music and loved to read.

In his younger years, he enjoyed attending church with his grandmother. Throughout his life, he enjoyed spending time with all of his grandparents and other family members. His family has many good memories of his presence at family events and his Sauk relatives appreciated his help at family feasts.

Steven is survived by his parents; grandparents; and aunt and uncle. He is survived as well by Erb Talley, whom he had known all his life and was as another grandfather to him.

His other surviving relatives are his great aunts, Thelma Coker, Mary McCormick, and Maxine Trubshaw; great uncle and aunt, Walter and JoAnn Coker; great uncle and aunt, Jose Raul Ortega and Iris Ortega; aunts Sallie Stewart, Susan Epps, Julia Elder, Sarah Gately, Gwen Wilburn, Shirley McCormick, Roseanna Preston, and Johanna Smith; uncles Dennis Jennings and Ryan Gately; and many cousins and family friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Joan G. Elder and great-grandmothers Frances Walker Coker and Cibeles Otero Galvez.

All of his family and friends knew that Steven had a kind heart, a keen sense of humor, and a beautiful smile. We are thankful for the time we had with him and he will be missed more than we can begin to say.

Funeral services were scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, in Seminole.

A Wake Service will also be held Monday evening at the family home place, west of Pleasant Grove School. Tribal burial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the family cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, in Seminole.

Robin Osborn

Konawa resident Robin Earlene (Lee) Osborn, age 46, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Valley View Hospital, in Ada.

She was born Oct. 21, 1962, in Portales, N.M., to John Lee and Myrna (Oldham) Lee. She married Ronald Osborn April 30, 1983, at the Britton Road Church of Christ, in Oklahoma City.

She was a teacher for the McCloud school system and a former second grade teacher for Konawa Elementary. She was a member of the Church of Christ, in Konawa.

She is survived by her husband, Ron Osborn, of the home; sons, John William Osborn, of Konawa and Ronnie Lee Osborn, of the home; parents, John and Myrna Lee, of Buckholts, Texas; brother, David Lee, of Cameron, Texas; sisters, Annette Escott, and Lori VanDyke, both of Arlington, Texas; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at the Church of Christ, in Konawa. Richard Winters and Carl Wills will officiate. Burial will follow at Wetumka Cemetery, in Wetumka.

The family may be visited at their home. Flowers may be delivered to the funeral home in Konawa.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, of Konawa.

Billy Pace

Billy Max Pace, age 80, long-time Konawa resident, died Thursday, May 28, at his residence in Claremore.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3 at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, in Konawa with Rev. Mitch Williams officiating.

He was born March 11, 1929, to Johnny Pace and Hattie Mae (Millsap) Summers, in Maud. He married Christine Hill in November 1950, in Leesville, La. He was the Manager for McDonald Douglas Aircraft. He graduated from Konawa High School in 1949. He was also an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Pace, of the home; sons, Thomas Dow Pace and Robert Leo Pace, both of Claremore; daughter, Debra S. Foster, of Claremore; and three grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Pace and Hattie Mae Summers and one brother, Cletus Pace.

Patsy Padgett

Former longtime Seminole resident Patsy A. "Pat" Padgett passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 in Yukon, at the age of 75.

She was born on June 16, 1933, in Seminole, to Luther and Kate Ruth (Gurley) Higdon.

Pat lived in Seminole for 59 years before moving to Ada, in 1992, to Norman in 1999 and in 2004, she moved to Yukon, where she was currently living.

Pat was a graduate of Pleasant Grove High School and served as the Past President of Pleasant Grove Alumni Association. She also attended East Central University, in Ada.

While living in Seminole, she was a member of the Bowling League for many years and Business Professional Women. She was a member of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, in Oklahoma City.

Pat began her career working for Norton-Ramsey Chevrolet and then Gregg Chevrolet where she was their comptroller for 19 years. She then went on to work as an office manager for the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission for 19 years where she retired in 1991.

She married Charles Padgett on Nov. 25, 1966, in Seminole. He survives her of the home, in Yukon.

She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kari and Jay Kelly, of Yukon; special daughter, Lindy White, of Oklahoma City; brother and sister-in-law, George and Jennie Higdon, of Seminole, and sister and brother-in-law, Qualla and Bob Addington, of Louisville, Ky., and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Venetta and Tom Welsh, of McAlester. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Katelyn, Madison, Kristian, Jayden and Kamryn.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Kate Ruth Higdon, one grandson, Gage Kelly, and one niece Karan Douthit.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Luke’s Children and Youth Ministry, 222 N.W. 15th, Oklahoma City, 73103-3598, in Pat’s Memory.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home, on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. Feb. 14, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, in Seminole, with Rev. Linda Brinkworth officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Seminole.

Pallbearers will be nephews: Kenny Higdon, Keith Higdon, Brent Cotton, Mike Cotton, Bradley Welsh and Bob Douthit.

Honorary bearers will be: H. Kay Dotson, Carl "Bo" Yancey, Ralph Caster, Ollie Adams, Squeak Hays, Scott Douthit, Bobby Douthit, George David Higdon, Charles Byrd, Kyle Cotton, Blake Cotton and Troy Cotton and Andrew Charles Welch.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, 100 W. Strothers, Seminole, 74868.

George Parker

Former Wewoka Lake Ranger George Hubert Parker, age 81, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, in Oklahoma City.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Wewoka Church of Christ, with Aaron Alsbrook and Dwight Parker officiating and burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 30, 1927 in Bearden, to E.B. Parker and Winnie (Winfred Sanders) Parker. He attended school in Bearden.

On June 8, 1951 George married Alta Mae Jones, in Wewoka. She preceded him in death Aug. 26, 2005.

George was Lake Ranger at Wewoka Lake for a number of years. He loved to drive the boat while Alta fished. He enjoyed his yard work and gardening.

George loved to visit and make new friends while being the Ranger.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Alta Mae Jones, three sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Parker, of Wewoka; son, Keith Parker and wife Bobbi, of Del City; two grandchildren, Kyle and Randy Parker; two brothers, E.B. Parker, of Grants Pass, Ore. and Covert Parker, of Borger, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Billie Parum

Seminole resident Billie Jane Parum, age 51, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in Oklahoma City.

She was born April 25, 1958, in Odessa, Texas to Billy Reed and Julia "Judy" Ellen Carter Parum.

She was a homemaker and a retailer at Walgreen’s for many years.

She is survived by her husband, David Swearengin, of Oklahoma City parents, Billy Reed Parum and wife Doris, of Hobbs, N.M. and Judy Ellen Carter, of Cushing; brother, Ronald Reed Parum of Cushing; and sister, Julie Ellaine Parum, of Seminole

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at Little Cemetery with Rev. Larry Chesser officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery in Little, Oklahoma.
