Bill Perkins

Bill Gene Perkins entered the Pearly Gates of Heaven on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 at the age of 82.

Bill was born Nov. 19, 1926 in Wewoka, to Jake Perkins and Lois (England) Perkins. A lifelong resident of Seminole County, Bill graduated from Wewoka High School in 1944. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II.

He later earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater. While attending OSU, Bill fell in love with a fellow student, Betty Jo Haning. They married at Wewoka’s First Baptist Church on Dec. 21, 1947 and began their 61-year journey of love and companionship.

Bill provided for his family by managing and operating Perkins’ Dairy, in Butner. He delivered milk the old fashioned way, door-to-door. After the dairy closed, Bill worked for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and later as a land man before he joined the United States Postal Service.

The mail route put Bill back where he most enjoyed being, door-to-door. He retired from the post office with twenty years of dedicated service. Meanwhile, "Mama Jo" was busy running her flower shop. This allowed Bill to continue delivering door-to-door.

Depending on a person’s age, Bill most likely has delivered milk, mail or flowers to pretty much everyone in Seminole County. Some longtime residents have opened their door to Bill for all three!

He was definitely a "people person", Bill enjoyed life and would always seem to have time to visit. Bill could be found enjoying his favorite Johnson's Cheeseburger and chocolate pie while listening to tall tales and telling a few of his own.

He never met a stranger and would accompany Mama Jo and the girls on marathon shopping trips without complaint; he always seemed to find someone to chat with, his infectious smile and sparking blue eyes put people at ease.

Bill was an active member of the First Baptist Church, of Wewoka and served on the Butner Board of Education for over thirty years. He enjoyed any activity that included his wife and family. Bill attended the girls’ basketball games, livestock shows, and any other activities they chose to be involved in. He was a loving and truly dedicated husband and daddy and enjoyed spoiling his girls.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Lois Perkins; a son, Patrick Perkins; and a sister, Mary Louise Morgan.

Left to honor Bill’s memory are his wife, Betty Jo Perkins, of the home; daughters, Nancy Stafford and husband, Ronnie, of Wewoka; Jennifer Perkins, of Seminole, and Kris Calvert and husband, Gary, of Wewoka. He leaves five grandchildren, Will Stafford and wife, Angela, Jared Stafford and wife, Sharee, Kayla Calvert, Cody Coats, and Cord Calvert; and four great grandchildren.

Also surviving him is a special sister-in-law, Willie Bea Phillips, of Tulsa; special friends of the family, David and Carolyn Thomas; and special caregivers, Saundra Calvert and Marsha Poplin, along with a community of friends and family that will miss him.

Funeral services are to be held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, in Wewoka. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.
