Shawnee resident Carl W. Ponkilla, age 47, died Friday, May 1, 2009, in Oklahoma City.
He was born Dec. 18, 1961, in Pawnee, to Chester Lee and Linda Lou (Deere) Ponkilla.
He was a lifelong resident of Shawnee. He attended Shawnee Public Schools and Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech.
He was a carpenter and built homes for Absentee Shawnee Tribe and as an independent contractor.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, one sister, Kathy Ponkilla and one brother.
He is survived by his mother, Linda Ponkilla, of Shawnee; children, Ashley Marie Ponkilla, of Shawnee and Eric Wayne Ponkilla, of Tecumseh; sisters, Carol Torres, of Shawnee, Lena Villalobos, of Shawnee; and brother, Edmond Ponkilla, of Shawnee
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Deere Family Cemetery, in Cromwell, with Fred Lyndsey officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
Mildred Ponoskey
Wewoka resident Mildred Ponoskey, longtime Wewoka resident, age 59, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at OU Medical Center, in Oklahoma City.
She was born Sept. 7, 1950, in Talihina, to John and Sadie Ponoskey. She worked as a seamstress, cook and was a Certified Nurses Aide for several years.
She was a member of Okmulgee Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Hailee Osborn, of Wewoka and sister, Christine Tiger, of Ada.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jocie Roberts.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Greenleaf Baptist Church, in Okemah, with Rev. Houston Tiger and Rev. Jimsey Harjo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka.
Jane Bryan Pool
Friends and family lost their beloved Jane Bryan Pool, age 71, of Nassau Bay, Texas, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009.
She was born in Seminole, in 1938, to Tillman P. and Naomi Bryan. Jane graduated from Seminole High School, in 1956. She attended Columbia College, in Missouri, and received a degree in English from the University of Oklahoma. After graduation, Jane taught school in Denver, Colo., until her marriage to Dr. Sam Pool, on June 24, 1961.
Jane taught junior high English, while Sam completed medical school and served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy. In 1968, Sam was hired by NASA, Johnson Space Center, as a medical officer, and they moved with their two young daughters to Nassau Bay, Texas. During the girls’ childhood, the family enjoyed annual car trips, visiting most of the continental United States and Alaska.
In 1980, Jane began teaching English at Clear Lake Intermediate School, and she remained there until her retirement, in 1999.
Always an avid reader, Jane was a member of a local book club for many years. She was also an active member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and frequently hosted meetings of the local alumni chapter.
In addition, Jane was a member of a very tight-knit group of high school friends, who remained close throughout the years and met annually in different cities around the country.
Jane was devoted to her children and her four grandchildren. She spent countless hours playing with them and attending their sporting events and music recitals. She loved taking annual trips with them to various national parks and skiing in Angel Fire, New Mexico. She and Sam also traveled extensively, visiting England, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and Canada. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Sam Pool; daughter, Keli Roper and her husband, Jeff Roper, and their two sons, Evan and Ryan; daughter, Elizabeth Stevens and her husband, Bill Stevens, and their two children, Bryan and Claire; her brother, Dickey Bryan and his wife Mary, of Seminole; niece, Kari Bryan, of Seminole; nephews, Jeremy Bryan and his wife Taressa Bryan, of Seminole and Eric Bryan and his wife DeeDee Bryan, of Seminole; great nieces, Kylie Rae Bryan and Brooklyn Elizabeth Bryan, both of Seminole; great nephew, Turner Allen Bryan, of Seminole; and cousin, Fred Gipson and his wife Linda Gipson, of Norman.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and cousins, Patti Gummerson Gipson and Linda Sharpe Stone.
There will be a memorial service for Jane at 11 a.m., at the Friendswood United Methodist Church, 110 North Friendswood Dr. (FM 518), on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, with Rev. Jim Bass officiating.
Graveside services will be held at the Historic Strothers Chapel, at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, in Seminole, with Rev. Jim Knowles officiating.

J.D. Poole, Jr.
J.D. "Pete" Poole Jr., was born Nov. 29, 1958, in Wewoka, Oklahoma to J.D. Poole and Minnie Lee Lindsey Poole and passed from this life Aug. 15, 2009, in his home, at the age of 50.
Pete lived in the Wetumka and Cromwell area. Pete worked in the oil field and overseas. He was in the United States Army for six years. He was married to Rhonda, the love of his life, for 27 years.
Pete was a member of Quarsarty Church.
Pete loved to garden, hunt, fish, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Pete was preceded in death by his father, J.D. Poole and mother, Minnie Poole.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda, and daughters Stephanie Poole and husband Emmanuel (Pocket) Morrison, LaCinda Poole and husband Micco Tiger; grand daughters Desiree Morrison, Kylee Morrison and unborn grandchild baby Morrison; four brothers, Allen Poole, Albert Poole, Earl Poole and Randy Poole; three sisters, Wanda Graham, Linda Zientek and Mary Poole and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at the Little Quarsarty Church at 10 a.m. with Reverend Eddie Joe Lindsey officiating.
Pallbearers will be: Shawn Murray, Chad Harjo, Robby Harjo, Timothy Wind, John Zientek, James Zientek, E.J. Poole and Waylon Poole.
Honorary Pallbearers will be: Keith Blanton, Jerry Brady, Rowdy Poole, Mace Graham, Ryan Blanton, Johnny Murray.
Interment will be at the Butner Cemetery under the direction of Williamson-Spradlin Funeral Home, Wetumka, Oklahoma.
Norma Presley
Norma Jean Presley, age 74 and a resident of Maud, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009, at her residence.
Norma was born on September 17, 1934 in Seminole, Oklahoma, to M. P. and Lena Grace (Luther) Presley. She was a homemaker who loved her family and grandchildren very much. Norma was also a member of the First Baptist Church, of Maud.
She is survived by one son, Rickey and wife, Donna Postman, of St. Louis, Oklahoma; three daughters, Sharron McDonald, Paula and husband, Curtis Bowers, and Terry and husband, Tony Peters, all of Maud, Oklahoma; one brother, Bill Presley, of Maud, Oklahoma; two sisters, Barbara and husband, Verlin Fletcher and Linda and husband, Lewis Schaflander, all of Maud, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, Ashley Postman, Wesley Postman, Johna Gustin, Joseph McDonald, Jenny Matthews, Jennifer Chaffin, Jaclyn Porterfield, Audrey Peters, and Amy Botting; four step-grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and ten step-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, M. P. and Lena Presley, and one great grandchild, Hunter Brooke Chaffin.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, July 9, at Little Cemetery under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Whitfield, Pastor of Highway Baptist Church, will officiate.
Pallbearers are her grandsons, Ashley Postman, Wesley Postman, Wade Porterfield, Eddie Botting, Mason Rogers, Joseph McDonald, and Randy Harjo.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home, in Maud.
Douglas Prince
Seminole resident, Douglas Leon Prince, 65, died June 11, 2009. He was born June 30, 1943 in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma to Leon John and Aline (Kirby) Prince.
Doug joined the Navy in 1966. His passion in life was racecars, both building and racing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Johnny Prince, stepson, Carey Gregory; and niece, Tammy Simmons.
Those left to cherish their memories are his loving wife, Lynn Prince, of the home; daughter, Mikki Prince; step-son, Todd Wiley and wife Amanda; sister, Anne Simmons and husband Sonny; aunts, Bobby Jean, Patty, and Aline; grandchildren, Hailey, Corbin, and Sidney Wiley; nephews, Randy Simmons and his wife Tammy and their children, Clayton and Brice; Justin Simmons and his wife Jill.
Visitation was 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 4, 2009. Cremation arrangements handled by Resthaven Funeral Home.
Katie Pruitt
Atoka resident Katie Virginia (Smith) Pruitt, age 84, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009, in Atoka.
She was born February 18, 1925, in Konawa, to Mark Milton Smith and Marilla Homesly Smith.
She attended Konawa schools. She married Clyde Pruitt on January 17, 1946, in Ada.
She was a bookkeeper for Pruitt Oil Co., before retiring in 2006.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, a member of Eastern Star, and active in Women’s Society of Christian Service.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Pruitt) Moreland, of Shawnee; son, Larry Pruitt and wife Mary Jane, of Denver, Col.; grandchildren, Mark Moreland and wife Rose, of Denver, Colo., Michael Moreland and wife Brandy, of Elgin, Oklahoma, Robert Pruitt, of Atoka, Jonathan Pruitt, of Atoka; great-grandchildren, Mikalyn Moreland, of Elgin, Braeden Moreland, of Elgin, Kellie Henderson and husband Jason, of Oologah, Oklahoma, David Kinney, of Tulsa; great-great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Kinney, of Oologah; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Pruitt, parents, Mark and Marilla Smith; brothers, Ollie Smith, Norb Smith, and Willie Smith; and sister, Opal Dooley.
Services were scheduled for 4 p.m., Sunday, May 3, 2009, First United Methodist Church, with pastor Daniel Ramey. Interment followed at Green Meadows Cemetery.
Casket bearers were: Don Walker, Brett Bradford, Mike Elliot, Joe Daniel, Terry Hillis, Pat Loftis, and Mark Moreland.
Honorary casket bearers were: Bob Breeden, Don Barnard, and Charles McCall.
Calvin Pyle
Calvin Loyle Pyle, 53 year-old Maud resident, passed from this life Friday, March 13, 2009 at Valley View Hospital, in Ada, Oklahoma. He was born April 27, 1955 in Prague, Oklahoma to parents Milfred Raygon Pyle and Eileen Vern (McCrary) Pyle.
Calvin graduated from Maud High School in 1973. Following his graduation he worked as a truck driver for many years and was currently driving for Saber Industries. He married Gena L. (Evans) Pyle on February 1, 2008 in Wewoka, Oklahoma.
Survivors include his wife, Gena Pyle, of the home; mother, Eileen DeShields, of Maud, Oklahoma; father and step-mother, Milford and Connie Pyle, of Kinta, Oklahoma; three sons, Jamie Pyle, of Arkansas, Danny Taylor, of the home and Kent "K.J." Spacek of the home; one daughter, Nicole Pyle, of Colorado; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Doyle and Rebekah Pyle, of Clare, Michigan and Robert Azlin, of Sayer, Oklahoma; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Dan Ellison, of North Pole, Alaska, Betty and Donny Brooks, of Maud, Oklahoma, and Leslie and George Nuckolls, of Seminole, Oklahoma; one step-sister, Gail Burk, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; three sisters-in-law, Debbie and her husband Craig Noel, Sherry and her husband Mikel Whiteside, of Maud, Oklahoma and Sheila Evans, of Midwest City, Oklahoma and one brother-in-law, Bill Hunt, of Noble, Oklahoma.
Calvin is preceded in death by his stepfather, Kenneth DeShields who died in October of 2004.
Funeral services are scheduled for March 17, 2009, at 2 p.m., at the Trinity Baptist Church, in Maud, Oklahoma.
Burial at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma.
Edgar Qualls
Edgar Troy Qualls was born on March 12, 1913, in Montgomery County, Ark., and departed this life on Sunday, November 8, 2009, in Seminole, Oklahoma, at the age of 96.
Qualls, the son of Robert and Easter Helen (Reed) Qualls, was a resident of the Seminole and Prague areas most of his life. He married Beulah G. Rowland, in October 1932, in Prague. She preceded him in death on March 6, 1992. Edgar was a farmer, an oilfield pumper, and a member of the Assembly of God, in Seminole.
His parents, three sons, four brothers, and two sisters also preceded Edgar in death.
He is survived by his sons, Paul Qualls, of Oklahoma City, and Roy Qualls, of Waco, Texas; daughters, Louise Qualls, Millie Aldridge, and Karen Qualls King, all of Seminole: 10 grandchildren: 16 great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 1 p.m., at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Prague with Chaplain Dennis Stone officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery, in Seminole County. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.
Peggy Lorene Quisenberry
Former Seminole resident Peggy Lorene Quisenberry, age 71, died, Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at her home in Oklahoma City. She was born May 6, 1938, in Seminole, to Henry Noah and Rosie Ellen (McCoy) Quisenberry.
She was a certified home health care nurse’s aide and also worked for Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City for over 15 years.
She is survived by her son, Joel Barlow, of Oklahoma City; daughters Brenda Hixon, of Hennessey and Sherry Barlow, of Midwest City sister, Louise Pitts, of Hennessey; and five grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, in Seminole, with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery, North of Seminole.
