Merle Sims

Seminole resident Merle Leland Sims, age 71, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at his home in Seminole.

He was born Sept. 26, 1938, to Charles Merle and Dorsa Lee (Rose) Sims.

He graduated from Varnum High School in 1957. In his early years he worked as an auto mechanic then later he worked in the printing industry as a press operator for Ebsco Industry.

Most of his life was spent in Seminole county but he did live in Texas from time to time.

He is survived by his sons, Donny Sims, of Choctaw, and Randy Sims, of Seminole; daughters, Sherry Keisman, of Seminole, and Teresa Winkle, of Oklahoma; brothers, Charles Sims, Starr Sims and Roy Sims, all of Seminole, and Harold Sims, of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Coy Sims; and infant son, Johnny Merle Sims.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Little Cemetery, in Little.

Serving as Casket bearers are: Marty Hudson, Christopher Keisman, Bryan Keisman, Randy Sims, Donny Sims and Brandon Sims.

Effie Mae Smith

Former Seminole resident Effie Mae (Parsons) Smith passed away on Sept. 2, 2009, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, at the age of 91.

She was born on July 23, 1918, in Konawa, Oklahoma to Jesse Lee and Tempie Jane (Lane) Jones.

She left Seminole in November of 2008 to live with Cindy and Larry. She loved flowers and gardening as well as going to flea markets and garage sales.

She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law: Connie and Carmello Perez, of Edmond, Oklahoma, Betty and Lawrence Metoyer, of Marshall, Texas, Virginia Martin, of Healdton, Oklahoma, Loretta and Glenn Stafford, of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Cindy and Larry Johnson, of Sulphur Springs, Texas. She is also survived by one sister, Betty Cox, of Curio, Texas, seven grandchildren: Greg Fitzwater, Lea Ann Hamilton, Karen Tucker, Matt Bean, David Martin, Jeremy Stafford, Joshua Johnson as well as 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one son, Bill Parsons, one grandson, Steven Martin, three brothers and one sister.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Tammy Stegal and Hospice at Memorial in Sulphur Springs for all the love and care they have given to Effie.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Danny Williams officiating.

Interment will follow at Little Cemetery in Little.

Pall Bearers will be: Larry Johnson, Joshua Johnson, David Martin, Matt Bean, Jeremy Stafford, and Frank Carter.

Curtis Smith

Curtis J. Smith, age 50, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, in Woodward.

He was born Oct. 30, 1958, to Newt and Thelma Cleta (Lee) Smith, in Seminole. He grew up around Seminole and Bowlegs, where he attended school and graduated from Seminole High School.

He married Dorothy Ramirez on April 5, 1989, in Canadian, Texas. They established their home in Woodward, where they remained throughout their married life.

He worked for a short time for Cargill, J&R Trucking, Irwin Auto, and L&L Backhoe.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; daughters, Charise and Chyanne Smith, both of the home; sons, Shane and Cory Stafford; brothers, Kenneth Mulkey, of Clarksville, Tenn., Marion Palmore, of Buna, Texas, John Smith, and Jerry Wayne Smith, both of Bowlegs; sisters, Cleta Dobbs and Mary Aguilar, of Laguna Vista, Texas; and five grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Neil Sothern; and sisters, Martha Notnovotny and Charlotte Leonard.

Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2009, in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Kenneth Mulkey officiating. Interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery.

Glen Smith

Longtime Seminole resident Glen Smith passed away on December 16, 2009 at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Clinton, Oklahoma, at the age of 74.

He was born on October 14, 1935 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Lester M. and Mable (Logan) Smith.

He graduated from Varnum High School and was a member of the Achena Presbyterian Church.

He served in the United States Air Force for 10 years and was discharged in 1963.

He married Darlene (Condulle) Smith on September 6, 1960, in Konawa, Oklahoma.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Darlene Smith of the home; three children, Farrel Smith, of Maud, Glenna and James Allison, of Seminole, and Lisa and Kurtis Silas, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; two sisters, Wanda Joyner, of Perryton, Texas, and Donna Hays, of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Carl Allison, and Kalyn Silas, and Kody Silas; and one great granddaughter, Taylor Allison.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, L.C. Gene Smith, and two sisters, Betty Casey and Verna Dice.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rick Harjo officiating. Interment will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma.

Casket bearers will be: James Allison, Carl Allison, William Allison, Kurtis Silas and Kody Silas.

Honorary bearer will be: Charlie Williams.

Jake Smith

Longtime Wewoka resident, Jake "Jakie" Hubert Smith, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at his daughter's residence, in Choctaw, Oklahoma, at the age of 80 years.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Don Ramsey officiating.

"Jakie" was born February 27, 1929, in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Alfred and Leona (Price) Smith. He graduated from New Lima High School in 1949.

Jakie married Wanda Jean Ramsey, October 7, 1949, and she preceded him in death July 1, 2007.

Mr. Smith served in the US Army during WWII and Japan conflict, after his discharge, he came back to Wewoka and opened his own machine shop.

He was a member and deacon of the Freewill Baptist Church.

Preceding Jakie in death are his parents; wife, Wanda, of 58 years; and son, Stephen Ray Smith.

Survivors included his daughter, Rhonda and son-in-law, Gary Buford, of Choctaw, Oklahoma; brother, Zane Smith, of Wewoka; sisters: Bonnie Smith, of Wewoka, and Billie Gardenhire of Noble; four very much loved grandchildren, Kent Paul Buford, Kendall Ray Buford, Christopher Ryan Smith, and Emily Kay Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan Ray Buford, Brandon Lee Buford, and Madelynn Jae Smith, and Mia Marie Smith.

Ruby Sneed

Ruby Dana Sneed, former Wewoka resident, passed away December 17, 2009 in Del City, Oklahoma, at the age of 82. Graveside Funeral Services will be held on Monday December 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Resthaven Cemetery, in Seminole, Oklahoma.

Ruby Dana Gallamore Sneed was born on October 9, 1927, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Forrest Early and Pearl Irene Gallamore. Ruby grew up in the Oklahoma City area and attended Oklahoma City Schools.

Ruby married Billie Ray Sneed on May 4, 1942, in Oklahoma City. Ruby worked as a seamstress and homemaker most of her life. Ruby was a fantastic cook and loved cooking for her family and friends. She also loved spending time roller-skating, swimming, reading, sewing and fishing.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Pearl Gallamore, her husband Billie Ray Sneed, sister Beaulah Gallamore, and three children Ruby Rogers, Charlie Sneed, and Jesse Sneed.

Ruby is survived by her children; Dana Sallee and husband Kenneth, of Wewoka; Johncy Dufresne, of Kansas City, Missouri; Jackie Miller, of Whitesboro, Texas; Kathy Brickey and husband James, of Midwest City, Oklahoma; Billie Sneed and wife Kathy, of Choctaw, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great- grandchildren.

Sherman Sorrell

Sherman L. Sorrel died Friday, June 12, 2009. He was born March 23, 1920, near Hot Springs, Ark., to Nelson and Minnie (Carpenter) Sorrell.

He went into the United States Army in March of 1942 and was discharged in September of 1945. He won six medals during his tour across Europe.

He met and married Lois Christopher Aug. 29, 1946, in San Pablo, Calif.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marley Sorrell, Radford Sorrell, and Jim Sorrell; sisters, Virgie Pennington, Elsie McGuire, and Grace Toney.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; children, Johnnie Sorrell, Shelley Dotson, and Randy Sorrell; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Reatha Bright, Lois Cozart, Lola Sanders, and Lorene Skie, all of Hot Springs, Ark.; and brothers, Herman and Norman Sorrell, of Hot Springs, Ark.

A memorial service was held at Freedom Assembly of God, in Shawnee, where he was a member. Pastor Donnie Knight officiated the service.

Otto Spears

Funeral Services for Wewoka resident Otto Marion Spears are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday Feb. 5, 2009 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, in Wewoka, with Rev. Perry Justice officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Otto died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at his residence, at the age of 90. He was born Nov. 15, 1918, in Sasakwa, to Norvil and Mattie (Churchman) Spears. He attended school grade school at Kight and High School at Sasakwa.

After graduation he started basic training in April of 1942 at Ft. Lewis, Wash. with the Army, during WWII. After completing basic training, he was assigned to the 44th Infantry Division under General Patton. He remained at Ft. Lewis until his transfer to Europe, in 1944. He landed in Normandy. He was one of the very few that survived.

He served in the European Theater of Operation and was a part of the D-Day Invasion. He was honorably discharged in September 1945 with many honors and awards.

Otto married Ruby Mae Scroggins, Jan. 22, 1942, in Sasakwa. They just celebrated their sixty-seventh wedding anniversary.

He was a member of Assembly God Church, of Wewoka, VFW, of Wewoka and disabled American Veterans.

Otto retired from the Oklahoma State Highway Dept. with 20 years of services as a Bridge Inspector. He will be remembered as an avid gardener with a garden like no other. He shared with all his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Jessie Scroggins, and infant brother J.T. Spears.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Mae Spears, of 67 years; son, Tommy and daughter-in-law, Thana Spears, of Sasakwa; one daughter, Kathy and son-in-law Tony Womack, of Seminole; two sisters, Alene Harris and husband Junior, of Ada and Bernita Horton, and husband Bob, of Ada; brother, Vernon Spears and wife Hazel, of Cromwell; one special brother-in-law, Leroy Scroggins and wife Ruth, of Richland Hills, Texas; six grandchildren, Kim Ward, of Stonewall, Kevin Womack and wife Tina, of Earlsboro, Kelly Rider and husband Jim, of Seminole, Tracey Morris, of Sasakwa, Wes Womack and wife Susan, of Seminole, Casey Thomas and husband Trevor, of Stonewall; fifteen great grandchildren, Brandy and John White, Jami Ward, Stoney Ward, Ashly Ward, Kodi Womack, A.J. Womack, Travis Rider, Jamie and Jason Myers, Kyle Moore, Sydney Morris, Zack Morris, Ryan Womack, Emily Womack, Kash Thomas and Kaleb Thomas; ten great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Womack, A.J. Womack, Travis Rider, John White, Stoney Ward, Trevor Thomas, Mike Horton, Kyle Moore, and Travis Lamar.

Natalei Spottedcrow-Larney

Natalei Sue Spottedcrow-Larney the infant daughter of Brian Larney and Brianna Spottedcrow, of Wewoka, passed away Monday, November 9, 2009, in Ada, Oklahoma.

Natalei is survived by both parents and aunt, Ramona Spottedcrow, of the home; grandparents, Nona Cloud, of Wewoka, Lelus Spottedcrow Sr., of Red Rock, Russelland Marian Larney, of Lamar; great-grandmother, Dorothy Gutierrez, of Wetumka; uncles, Vernon Spottedcrow, of Oklahoma City, Damian Larney, of Lamar, Lelus Jr., Crystal, Amayah and Lalia Spottedcrow, of Wewoka, Keith Larney, Marschell Tiger, Dametris and Dezire’ Larney, of Okmulgee; Samantha Larney, and Tyler and Leah Harjochee, of Holdenville.

Natalei is preceded in death by great-grandparents Lee and Judy Cloud and Ryder and Serena Larney; and great-grandfather, Fred Bruner.

Wake services are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 13, 2009 at Middle Creek #1 Baptist Church.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Middle Creek #1 Baptist Church with speakers Huston Tiger, Joe Bruner, Tim Harjo, and Mark Smith.

Burial will take place at the Tiger Cemetery, in Wewoka, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers will be: Lewis Johnson, Vernon Spottedcrow, Spencer Underwood, and Leo Cloud.

Honorary bearers will be: Keith Larney, Russell Larney, Randy Leftwhich, Lelus Spottedcrow Sr.

Natalei will be missed by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
