Mary Allen

Mary Elaine Allen, 78, of Little Rock died Friday, November 5, 2010. She was born on July 25, 1932 in Vinita, Oklahoma, a daughter of Cecil Wayne and Ruby Dee Asbury.

She was a graduate of Seminole High School where she played varsity tennis. She was the owner of women’s clothing stores in Russellville and North Little Rock (Mason’s and Just Me). She managed the gift shop at the Arkansas State Capital for several years.

During that time, she worked with the artist on the outdoor Nativity Scene that is on view to the public each Christmas near the Capital Building. She also worked in the Arkansas State Senate during sessions. She liked to go antiquing to add to her many collections. Most importantly, she loved raising three wonderful sons.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Phyllis Rose.

She is survived by her husband, Donald V. Allen, the love of her life, to whom she was married on April 12, 1951 in Seminole, Oklahoma; her children, Larry Allen and his wife Pam of Dallas, Texas; Wes Allen and his wife Frances of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and their children, Jenna Allen Sherrod of Statesboro, Georgia and her husband Brandon and Wesley Allen of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Tom Allen and his wife Chris of Bentonville, Arkansas and their children, Matthew and Rachel Allen.

She was affectionately known as Grand Mary to her grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy King and Billie Patterson, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Arkansas (501)224-8300.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 8, 2010, at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle, Arkansas.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Arkansas, 10411 W. Markham Street, Suite 130, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.

Susie Altman

Mrs. Susie Dacus Altman, 66 of Greensboro, Ga. died on July 19, 2010, following a five month struggle with her health. Mrs. Altman was born in Seminole on February 27, 1944 to the late Doyan Dacus and Wanda Parker Dacus Turbeville. Mrs. Altman attended St. Petersburg Junior College. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Ramsey Altman, Jr. on June 2, 1966. Mrs. Altman was a certified dental assistant and worked over forty years in the dental field. The Altman’s moved to Greensboro from Marietta, Ga. in 2002. Though she attended church locally, her church membership remained at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta. Mrs. Altman loved her family and friends. Her true joy came particularly from time spent with her granddaughter, Adyson. She had recently returned from a family vacation to Disney World with her.

Mrs. Altman is survived by her husband, Ramsey Altman and their two daughters, Ashley Altman and her fiancé, Patrick O’Neill and Alyson A. Griggs and husband, John. Also surviving is one granddaughter, Adyson Griggs, as well as Mrs. Altman’s mother, Wanda Dacus Turbeville.

Susie often thought of family and friends and even strangers before herself. Her faith in God, spiritual strength, determination and commitment to others is the hallmark of her life.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at A.E. Carter Funeral Home in Madison. The funeral service will be held on Friday at the Madison First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the nearby Madison Memorial Park.

Dorothy Anderson

Former Sasakwa resident Dorothy Evelyn (Morrow) Anderson, age 87, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Seminole Estates Care and Rehab Center, in Seminole.

She was born April 23, 1922, in Konawa, to John Morrow and Mary (Blackwood) Morrow. She married Marion "Andy" Anderson on March 19, 1941, in Sasakwa, where they made their home. She and her husband owned their own barber and beauty shop. She was a member of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her son, Clifton Anderson, of Wewoka; brothers, Andy Morrow and Wyndol Morrow, both of Ada; sister, Bobbie O’Shea, of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sisters, Lorene Ogle and Tenzy Roberts.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, in Konawa. Burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery. Tommy Azlin will officiate, and Laura Ford is the soloist.

Mary Applegate

Mary Marie Applegate, age 91, died Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at Heritage Village Nursing Home, in Holdenville.

She was born Feb. 17, 1918, to James Shelton ‘Shep' McCoy and Rosa Mae (Campbell) McCoy, in Lamar, where she was brought up and attended schools. She married to Leon Applegate on Feb. 16, 1943, in Wewoka. They moved to California, where they spent the next 49 years. They returned to Oklahoma in the summer of 1992 and made their home in Holdenville.

She lived for the past several years at Heritage Village.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Schwarta, of Baldwin, Wis.; sisters, Elva ‘Pete' Manley, of Holdenville, and Stella Davis, of Seminole; and brother, Jack McCoy, of Holdenville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Homer Lee, Bill, Jim, Tom, George ‘Sonny', John, Joel, and Kelsa McCoy.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, at Lillye Chapel, at the Fisher Funeral Home, in Holdenville, with Rev. Jimmie Freeman officiating. Interment will be in the Lamar Cemetery under direction of Fisher Funeral Home, of Holdenville.

Tommy Armstrong

Funeral services for former Konawa native Tommy B. Armstrong are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2010, in the West Center of Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuary, in Omaha, Neb.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, under the direction of Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuary.

Visitation will be at 3 p.m. on Monday with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the West Center Chapel.

Tommy passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in Omaha Neb., at the age of 75.

Tommy was born August 2, 1934 in Konawa.

He was preceded in death by wife, Priscilla J. Armstrong.

He is survived by children: Laurie Saenz and fiancé, Robert Harbour, Noah Stephen Armstrong and wife Theresa, Gary Bryan Armstrong; stepchildren; Sara Kunce, Lisa Gepson, Michael Gans and Patrick Gans: grandchildren: Justin, Brian, Stephen Jr., and Dawn; step-grandchildren: Jennifer, Danny and Kyle; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Thad Ashcraft

Lifelong Seminole resident Thad Lee Ashcraft passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 after a 2-year battle with cancer.

He was born on January 14, 1941 in Seminole, Oklahoma to William Edward and Mary Francis (Bow) Ashcraft.

Thad married Teresa May (Kernal) on November 18, 1961 in Little, Oklahoma.

Thad started in the oilfield at the age of 18 working for Jimmie Austin Drilling Company, K.D. Emerick Well Service, B.J. Oilfield Services and then went to work as a Superintendent for Sun Oil Company for 17 years; he also worked as a Superintendent for Grand Resources and Landmark Energy.

He and his wife started A & A Enterprises, an oilfield consulting company. After his retirement he worked as a consultant for Grand Resources in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He and his wife were members of the Church of Christ at Little.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 49 years Teresa Ashcraft of the home, two sons and daughters-in-law; Thad Lynn Ashcraft and wife Djuana of Edmond, and son Randy Lee Ashcraft and wife Shalia of Seminole. Six grandchildren; Casady Lynn-Marie Ashcraft, Lexi Maylee Ashcraft, Taylor Lynn Ashcraft, Blake Edward Ashcraft, Jared Lane Ashcraft, Cale Bladen Ashcraft.

He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law: Gene and Burma Kernal of Seminole, Joe and Colleen Peeper of Wewoka, Oklahoma, Dick and Carolyn Kernal of Seminole, Oklahoma, Morris and Deloris Jackson of Norman, Oklahoma and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Edward and Mary Francis Ashcraft and brother, Charles Edward Ashcraft.

Funeral services are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Seminole Church of Christ located at 12040 N. Hwy 99 in Seminole with Rusty Dawson officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel.

Sam B.Harjo

Sam (Snake) B.Harjo, a resident of Henryetta, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the age of 60. He was born on Saturday, May 21, 1949, to George and Christine (Brown) B.Harjo, in Talihina, Oklahoma. Sam served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On March 17, 1969, he married Geneva (Harjo), in Seminole, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and infant daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva B.Harjo, of the home; three sons, Pahos B.Harjo and wife, Angelia, of Sapulpa, Thomas B.Harjo, of Okmulgee and Sam B.Harjo, Jr. and wife, Keri, of Choctaw; three daughters, Jennifer Edwards and husband, Daniel, of Broken Arrow, Marsha B.Harjo and Patrick Tom, of Okmulgee and Sarah Gutierrez and husband, Jesse, of Okmulgee; fifteen grandchildren, Alyssa Harley, Taylor Russell, Joseph B.Harjo, Nakoa Edwards, Trista B.Harjo, Christopher Edwards, Lillian B.Harjo, Michael B.Harjo, Nathan B.Harjo, Kei’Lei Edwards, Angel Gutierrez, Madison B.Harjo, Kiahna Gutierrez, Marah Sue Edwards and MaeKayla Sue B.Harjo; five brothers, Thomas Ahaisuee, of Oklahoma City, Mody B.Harjo, of Denver, Colo., Marsey B.Harjo, of Okmulgee, Manuel "Yogi" B.Harjo, of Del City and Willie B.Harjo, of Seminole; four sisters, Lucy K. Smith, of Seminole, Nancy Fixico, of Seminole, Sharon Proctor, of Okmulgee and Sonja Larney, of Shawnee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wake Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010, at the Wilson Community Center.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Wilson Community Center with Reverend Tim Coon and Newman Crowels officiating. Burial will follow the service at the B.Harjo Family Cemetery, under the direction of the Shurden Funeral Home, in Henryetta.

Pallbearers will be: Jeff Fixico, Ryan Smith, Timothy B.Harjo, George Proctor, Austin B.Harjo, Rayne Harjo, Stuart Corbin, Jerome Yazzie and Adam, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Thomas Ahaisuee, Joseph B.Harjo, Christopher Edwards and Michael B.Harjo.

Military Honors will be conducted by the Seminole Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shurden Funeral Home, in Henryetta.

Wayne Baker

Longtime Bowlegs resident and current Mayor of Bowlegs, Wayne Eugene Baker passed away on February 23, 2010, at Integris Southwest Medical Center, at the age of 74.

He was born on January 31, 1936, in Seminole, to Chester and Ruby (Grisso) Baker.

Wayne married Morna Burgett on November 12, 1960. They were married 38 years until she passed away on September 24, 1998. Together they had four natural children, and adopted four grandchildren and raised them as their own.

Their children include twin sons; H. Wayne Baker, of Choctaw, who passed away in 2007, and T. Wyatt Baker, of Houston, Texas, M. Susan Chadick, of Bowlegs, Sally Perry and husband James, of Bowlegs, Nick Baker, of Seminole, Ashley Baker, of Seminole, Cody Bohlke and wife Nikki, of Great Falls, Mont., Chastity Baker and fiancé Matt Harrod, of Bowlegs, daughter, Kaiti Batesel, of Harrah, Oklahoma.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shelbi Mullinax and husband Justin, of Bridge Creek, Johni Adkisson and husband Brad, of Choctaw, Cory Baker, of Azel, Texas, Chaz Bearden, of Oklahoma City, Kara Baker, of Bowlegs, Jayla Perry, of Bowlegs, James and Bryan Perry, of Wewoka, brother, John Baker and wife Natalie and sister Saundra and husband Bob Garrison, all of Seminole; eight great grandchildren, Carver Crowson, Violet and Montana Mullinax, Tyler and Aaron Bohlke, Bradley, Caylee and Braylee Adkisson. Many nieces, nephews and other family and friends also survive him.

Wayne served in the Army National Guard for one year and was then recruited to serve in the United States Navy where he served as an engine man on a submarine and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Tinker Air Force Base after 25 years, in 1988, where he was an aircraft welder. He then went on to be a supervisor for Bell Gas Corporation until it closed down in 1993. He currently drove a bus for Bowlegs Schools from 1994 until the day he passed away. He is the current Mayor of Bowlegs and a member of the Seminole Elks Lodge. He is a member of the Bowlegs First Baptist Church and Bowlegs Alumni. He was a big supporter of Bowlegs Schools; he went to all the Bowlegs Bison football games. For the past several years he had catered the Bowlegs Annual Alumni dinner and helped out with the Welding Class and with the maintenance of the buses. In his earlier years he coached little league, football, baseball and softball for his children teams, in Choctaw.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Morna Baker; parents, Chester and Ruby Baker; and son H. Wayne Baker.

Wayne enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family; he always had a smile on his face and a story to share. He loved children and was known as "Dad" to many. He was the best father and grandfather anyone could ask for. He gave generously and was loved by all who knew him, he will be missed by his family more than words can express.

Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Bowlegs High School Gym with Jason Yarbrough officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery with military honors.

Casket bearers will be: Jarrod Baker, Justin Mullinax, Brad Adkisson, Matt Harrod, Ryan Kenyon and Terry Young.

Annette Ball-Petersen

Annette Marie Petersen, age 55, passed away at her home, in Seminole, on Wednesday, February 3, 2010.

Ann was the daughter of Charlie Bruce Ball and Violet (Novak) Ball. She was born June 6, 1954, in Anadarko, Oklahoma. A resident of the Seminole area since age 7, she graduated Varnum High School, in 1972, and attended Seminole Junior College.

She lived for several years in Texas, where she owned and operated a fence company, and returned to Seminole in 1995. She was married to Gregory ‘Pete' Petersen, on December 31, 2000, in Seminole. She loved antiques and making jewelry.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Pete and daughter, Kristin Oliver, both of the home; two stepdaughters, Nikki Petersen, of Abilene, Texas and Jennifer Petersen, of Winchester, Oklahoma; two brothers, Charlie and Willie Ball, both of Seminole; several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and many friends.

A memorial celebration is scheduled for 12 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Four Mile Tavern.

Johnny Barker

Lifelong Seminole resident Johnny Grant Barker died on June 2, 2010 in Seminole, Oklahoma at the age of 66.

He was born on July 6, 1943 in Ada, Oklahoma to Ruth (Watters) Barker and was raised by Virgil and Ethel Barker and Zella Drake.

He graduated from Stratford High School in 1961. He married Billye Junelle (Davis) Barker on July 2, 1984 in Sasakwa, Oklahoma.

He worked for Dolese as a rock crusher and retired in 2000. He loved to fish, play the guitar and read the Bible he was involved in Prison ministries, he also taught Sunday school at Spring Baptist Church where he was a member.

He is survived by his wife Billye Junelle Barker of the home, he is survived by six sons; Travis Barker of Holdenville, Oklahoma, Theodore Keefer of Ada, Oklahoma, Tony Keefer of Sasakwa, Troy Keefer of Holdenville, Oklahoma, Coker Barker of Seminole and Brandon Peak of Tulsa, five daughters; Tricia Barker of Holdenville, Tracy Wiseman of Holdenville, T.J. McDaniel of Holdenville, Oklahoma, Terri Leader of Lamar, Oklahoma and Shelia Ryals of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, two brothers: Ronnie Drake of Eufaula, Oklahoma and Forest Watters of Sasakwa, Oklahoma. Fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive him. And a sister Gena Drake of Eufaula, Oklahoma.

His parents, and two granddaughters, Courtney and Brenda Berry, precede him in death.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa, Oklahoma

Wake services will be; 6:00 P.M. Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Davis Cemetery in Sasakwa, Oklahoma.

Casket Bearers will be Theodore Keefer, Travis Barker, Nick Ryals, Brandon Peak, Abe Davis and Bill Davis, Jr. Honorary bearers will be Randy McDaniel, Stormy Keefer and Ronnie Drake

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
