Bertha Simpson
Bertha E. (French) Simpson went home to be with her Lord March 23, 2010, at the age of 96. She passed away peacefully at Bellevue Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Oklahoma City.
Bertha was born on February 14, 1914, to James Madison and Mary Ellen French, outside of Spaulding, Oklahoma. She was the 4th of 8 children. Bert attended Caston Schools up to the 8th grade and then attended and graduated from Spaulding High School as valedictorian, in 1934. She was a championship forward and captain of Spaulding basketball team and played along side her sister Eula Faye, who was a guard.
She was on the debate team and was chosen as "outstanding girl" in high school and received $50 from the district judge, Judge Crump. She was quoted as saying, $50 in the depression...we could not believe it and liked to never spent that money!"
She married Dan Simpson, at 19, and moved to Wewoka and was married 13 years. Her first jobs included Murier Tire and Appliance and Bates Drug Store. She really found her passion when she went to work for Tom Moore’s Furniture Store, in Wewoka, in 1949. She grew to become the top salesperson. She was a dependable business woman respected by all who knew her. After 26 years, she retired when Moore’s store sold in the 70’s.
Bert was off one week when Bob Loftis came calling and asked her to work for him and his family selling furniture in Holdenville. That created another beautiful match made in "furniture heaven" as she was a top producer and assistant manager for Loftis Furniture for 15 years.
After retiring from Loftis Furniture, Bertha then went to work at Oakridge Manor in Wewoka, in 1986, at the age of 72 as a teacher to her " special kids" and worked for eight more years. It was only when her eyesight became compromised that she was forced to retire one final time, in 1994.
Bert was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, in Wewoka, where she taught Adult II Sunday School. She was always quick to tell people how much she loved her church family. She has many accomplishments including being recognized as " Wewoka" Working Woman of the Week." She was active in the business communities of both Wewoka and Holdenville throughout the years. She served on the "Welcome Wagon for Wewoka" and loved telling newcomers about her wonderful town. She was chosen Woman of the Year by the Holdenville Chapter of Business and Professional Women. She was a past B & PW president and served as state district director.
There was no one more passionate about politics than Bert. She was 100% Democrat and never missed voting the democratic ticket from the time her dad helped her to register at 18 years of age. She was a natural and took an interest to politics like PaPa. She was an active member in the Seminole County Democratic Women’s Club and held many offices including past president and secretary.
One of her proudest moments came when she was chosen as "Miss Democrat Woman of the Seminole County" in 1960. She was coordinator for the Ed Edmondson Campaign for Senate and proved to be a strong supporter for who or what she believed in. She is a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Bert loved people and helping others. She always looked for the good in everyone. Her kindness, generosity and spirit have touched many lives over the years. She often said "God had blessed her with a beautiful life and many friendship and a loving family."
Bert was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Mat and Mary French; brothers and sister-in-laws, Tom and Alice French, Bill and Bernice French, James Albert French, and David French. Also preceding her in death are sisters and brothers-in-law, Eula Faye and Roy Ferguson and Ima Jean and Arnold Dean Robinson.
She is Aunt Bug to her family who loved her so very much and will struggle to fill the void her absence has created. She is survived by one dedicated sister-in-law, Eva Jean French. Her many nieces and nephews include: Barbara and John Loudermilk; Jamie and Bob Adamson; Mat and Rhonda French, June and Phillip Holloway; Jane French Burns; Judy and Bob Jones; Neta Jean and Jim Jones; Joe and Mary French; Jim and Starlin French; Arnold Dean and Jan Robinson; Bill and Lavon Craft; Bob Craft; Roger Ferguson; and Leah and Val Larson. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of family and friends.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Patty Moore and Rhonda Factor for their love and devotion as they helped care for Bert this past year.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Wewoka’s youth group.
