Zella Smith

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Zella "Johnnie" Smith will be Wednesday 10 a.m., on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the Hilltop Baptist Church in Wewoka.

Burial will follow at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Ponca, City at 3 p.m.

Johnnie passed away Friday, May 14, 2010 in Oklahoma City at the age of 65 years.

Johnnie Smith was born May 16, 1944 to Orlin "Dusty" and Ally Maxine Runyan Eeds in Pauls Valley.

She graduated from Laverne High School and latter married her soulmate Manus Smith in 1975 in Oklahoma City.

Together they owned and operated Magnum Valve Company in Oklahoma City for many years until Manus retired and purchased a Ranch in Wewoka, where they have resided since retirement.

Johnnie loved to shop and spend time doing interior decorating, and traveling.

She was a wonderful cook and loved taking her grandchildren to the movies.

She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Manus Smith, and her son Jay Cox.

She is survived by her son Kip and wife Crystal Smith and their children Kreece, Kason, and Kinsey Smith, Kaden Boswell, and Cooper Boswell of Wewoka; Jay’s children, Seth and Keegan Cox; sisters Pat and husband Forrest Lea of California, and LaHoma Koch of Fairfax.

Pallbearers are Justin Sipes, Nick Arthur, Kelly Babb, Scotty Davis, Monte Phillips, and Simy White.

Honorary Bearers are Gary Thomas, Keegan Cox, Seth Cox, and Chris Hall.

Alpha Sommerville

Alpha Fern Sommerville, 94, longtime Seminole resident passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Seminole Care and Rehabilitation Center in Seminole. Alpha was born January 17, 1916.

Alpha moved to Seminole from Tulsa in 1941. She was married to Rex G. Sommerville on May 23, 1934 in Mineral Wells, Texas.

Rex was longtime co-owner of Sommerville-Swearingen-Arnhart Funeral Home in Seminole. He died on May 15, 1991.

Alpha was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Seminole where she was active and a member of the Wedding Ring Class.

She also helped decorate the church’s Christmas tree during Christmas time.

Alpha worked as the Society Editor for the Seminole Producer for a while and later owned and operated Alpha’s Accessories shop in downtown Seminole.

Alpha is survived by her Son, Phillip Sommerville of Seminole;, one sister, Thelma Smith of Rulo, Nebraska, two Grandchildren Vanessa Conn and Tiffany Stokes and five great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rex and a Grandson Mark Sommerville.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary O. Wilburn officiating.

Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Kelly Souther

Kelly Dion (Farris) Souther was born on November 30, 1961 in Oklahoma City to Becky Vaught Sherlock and Kenneth Farris.

Kelly passed away May 4, 2010 at her home in Wewoka.

She is survived by her mother Becky Sherlock of Wewoka, sons Richard Vreeland, Oklahoma City, and David Kendall Gore, Wewoka brothers Kevin and wife Cindy Farris of Topeka, Kan., Kasey and Kyle Farris of Wewoka, Daughter in law Angie Whisnant and grandson Zane Gore and Granddaughter Aerius Carter of Wewoka and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death are her son, Austin Gore and sister Kendall Farris, Step Father Kenneth (Bud) Sherlock, Father Kenneth Farris, and her grandparents.

Kelly graduated from Butner High School and attended Seminole Junior College and Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech.

She was member of First Baptist Church Cromwell, and before getting sick, she was manager of Convenience Store.

Kelly never met a stranger, she had a hard head and a very soft heart.

She will be missed by all who loved her.

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday May 11, 2010 at Sand Creek Cemetery in Cromwell at 2 p.m. with Author Orsburn officiating .

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Ronald Spencer

Ronald J. Spencer from Tulsa, Oklahoma was born February 20, 1938 in Konawa, Oklahoma to John Hampton and Edith (Plasschaert) Spencer.

He was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Konawa and was an active member along with his mother, father, and sister. He passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, at Clarehouse Hospice in Tulsa at the age of 72. Ron is survived by his wife of 50 years, Durla (Hensley) Spencer: son, Jeffrey A. Spencer of Konawa; daughter, Heather Taylor and her husband Todd Taylor of Ft. Worth, TX; son, Bryan Spencer and his wife, Jewels of Tulsa; grandchildren, Cooper Taylor, Riley Taylor, Parker Taylor and Hunter Spencer; and sister, Julia Ann Prado of California.

Ron entered Oklahoma University in 1959 where he received his Chemical Engineering degree in 1963. He remained a loyal Sooner fan all of his life, even when his children decided to attend OSU.

After graduation, Ron went to work for the Trane Company and spent the first two years working in Texas. He missed Oklahoma so much that he asked for a transfer and was reassigned to the Tulsa office, where he became part owner of the office in 1981. When the Trane franchise was dissolved in 1986, Ron continued to serve the Tulsa community by starting Optimum Systems and Service. His expertise in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning was widely recognized by his peers in the engineering and HVAC contracting industry. Ron was an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

He served in many leadership positions in the local ASHRAE Chapter as well as on a regional level, receiving the Region VIII Regional Award of Merit for his service to the industry. Ron was devoted to his love for photography, computers, shooting and his ability to reminisce and tell stories about his life.

While Ron built his life and his business, he never forgot his roots. He loved shooting pistols, doing photography, and he loved talking to people.

He loved his family and friends from his youth and made frequent trips back to the farm in Konawa that he loved dearly, to refresh his soul and reinforce the values that he carried with him throughout his life.

Ron will be severely missed by all of those knew him and were fortunate enough to have had his presence in their lives. Daddy\PaPa, we love you and will miss you dearly, but you will always be very special in our hearts.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Konawa, Oklahoma under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.

Burial will follow at Vista Cemetery.

Rev. Bobby Allison, Pastor will officiate, and Rev. Darryl Stinnett will assist.

Pallbearers are Jeff Spencer, Bill Hanlon, Keith Brown, Todd Taylor, Kym Barger, and Rick Anglin. Honorary Pallbearers are Bryan Spencer, Dale Phelps, Tony Lowry, Larry Johnson, Jan Campbell, Wayne Hodge, and Lawrence Hinman.

The family will receive guests on Wednesday evening from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made in Ron’s name to the ASHRAE Jack Tumilty Scholarship Fund, c/o Browne Consulting Engineers, P.O. Box 140538, Broken Arrow, OK 74014.

Paul "PD" Splawn

Paul "PD" Duane Splawn, age 66 and a life-long resident of Konawa, Oklahoma, died on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Ada, Oklahoma.

A wake service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11th, at Grace Community Church in Konawa. The funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12th also at Grace Community Church under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa. Burial will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma. Aaron Isaacs, Jimsey Harjo, and Tim Harjo will officiate.

Pallbearers are Adam Foster, Doug Isaacs, Bob Harrison, R.C. Norman, and James George. Honorary Pallbearers are Michael Campbell, Kevin Campbell, Dakota Shaw, Tanner Wood, William Pellessier, Stace Harjo, Michael Pellessier, Jessie Lindsey, Authur Davis, Jr., and Bill Jordan.

PD was born in Maud, Oklahoma on October 27, 1943, to Norma (Cron) and Paul C. Splawn. He graduated from Konawa High School and attended East Central University in Ada.

He served in the National Guard, and he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Konawa. PD was a team roper in the rodeos for many years. He worked in the construction of the O.G.&E. plants in Konawa and Muskogee.

He is survived by his mother, Norma Splawn of Konawa, one daughter, Mysti Splawn of Wewoka, Oklahoma; two sisters, Pamela Pellessier of Norman, Oklahoma, and Debbie Splawn of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, three step-children, Timothy Harjo of Maud, Oklahoma, Stace Harjo of Seminole, Oklahoma, and Brandy Harjo of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

Bert Springwater

Bert Edward Springwater, 80, longtime Seminole resident passed away August 2, 2010 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Bert was born August 12, 1929 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Clarence Calvin and Martha May (Davis) Springwater.

Bert a life long Seminole resident attended and graduated from Seminole High School in 1948 and served in the National Guard from 1947-1948 and in 1953 served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during the Korean Conflict. Bert was very active in the American Legion post in Seminole. Bert spent most of his working career in the Seminole oilfields on drilling rigs.

Bert married Helen Jean (Kepler) Springwater in April 12, 1954 in Ada, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on May 10, 1994.

Bert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Larry Stan Evans of Shawnee. He is also survived by two grandchildren Amber Scott and her husband Darcy and Andrew Evans both of Shawnee, two great-grandchildren Rylee Ann Scott and Madison N. Scott of Shawnee.

His parents, Clarence and Martha Springwater, his wife Helen, his brother Conard Springwater, and two sisters Helen Hart and Ruth Roby preceded him in death.

Graveside services are planned for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole. Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate the service.

Mattie Starnes

Mattie Jefferson Starnes, "Momma Mattie" as she was fondly called was born October 25, 1907 in Sasakwa, Oklahoma to Thomas and Julie (Williams) Jefferson, died Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 in Elmwood Manor Nursing Home.

Preceding her in death are her parents and fourteen siblings.

Mattie received her education in Sasakwa and Lima Schools. During her child bearing years, she gave birth to one daughter, Castella. Later she met and married Willie Starnes, in this union they were joined with two additional children.

The family moved to Wewoka where they shared a long and happy life. Her husband Willie and daughter Castella both preceded her in death.

Mattie worked as a housekeeper, nanny and nurse aide until retirement. She was the grandmother of three: two girls, and one boy (in which one granddaughter Ellyce and one grandson Louis preceded her in death). After no longer being able to live alone she resided at Wewoka Care Center, then at Elmwood Manor until the age of 102 years.

Survivors she leaves to cherish her memory one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends that knew " Momma Mattie."

Viewing and visitation will be Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Virginia Starr

Virginia Dare "Timmie"(Mayfield) Mealy Starr, age 80, was tragically taken from those who loved her on Sunday, February 7, 2010.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, February 11, at Swearingen Funeral Home, in Konawa, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery. Richard Winters, Pastor of the Church of Christ, in Konawa, will officiate.

"Timmie" was born on October 17, 1924, to Margaret E. "Chick" (Cox) and Herbert "Hub" Mayfield in Konawa, Oklahoma. She married Jack Starr in 1968, and she was a member of the Church of Christ. A woman of style and class, Timmie will be greatly missed by her family and lifetime friends whom are too numerous to count.

She is survived by one son, Richard B. "Rick" Mealy, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one step-daughter, Sandy Chamberlain, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one step-son, Randy Starr, of West Virginia; one brother, Hoyte Mayfield and wife, Francis, of Konawa, Oklahoma; one sister, Billye Noland, and husband Don, of Oklahoma City; one granddaughter, Laura Ruth Meally, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nieces, Chris Morriss and Cindy Burris; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Herbert Mayfield; one son, Byron Mealy; and husbands, Jack Starr, and Richard B. "Dick" Mealy.

Wilbur Starr

Wewoka resident Wilbur Edward Starr, age 86, died Thursday, March 18, 2010. He was born Dec. 28 1923, in Henryetta, to Edward Starr and Lilly (Lewis) Starr. He graduated from Bryant Schools, Haskell, and OSU Tech, receiving an associate’s degree.

He married Mattie Pope Starr on Jan. 1, 1978, in Oklahoma City. He worked in Texas as a Baker, for Wyatts Bakery.

He is survived by his children, Reuben Starr, of Eufaula, Robert Starr, of San Antonio Texas, Ramona Ward, of Dallas Texas, Robin Starr, of Wewoka, Regana Sellers, of Red Oak Texas, and Richard Starr, of Irving Texas. 18 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; brother, Wesley Asbury, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and sister, Carol Morris, of Tulsa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Raymond Starr; and brothers, Buster Barnette and Johnny Joe Asbury.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, March 22, at Stout-Phillips Chapel with interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

Pall Bearers will be his grandsons: Michael Starr, George Sellers, Siah Starr, Austin Hicks, Alex Hicks, and Jesse Trevino. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Jason Starr, Kevin Starr, Phillip Lemon, and Daniel Lemon.
