Evelyn Willingham

Longtime Seminole City Leader Evelyn Willingham passed away Saturday after a brief hospital stay.

She was very active in the community and had a great passion for making Seminole a better place to live.

Evelyn was involved with many organizations in her life including Seminole Girls Softball, the Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Council of Seminole, various civic organizations, the Seminole City Council and most recently, the Oklahoma Oil Museum.

Evelyn was born September 26, 1942, to Woodrow and Lorene (Love) Fite in Binger, Oklahoma.

She grew up in Bakersfield, California and Paden, Oklahoma. Shortly after moving to Seminole with her family, Evelyn co-founded Sooner Chemical Corporation and helped build it into one of the larger petrochemical companies in the southwest.

Sooner Chemical sold to Philadelphia Quartz in 1981 and Evelyn then started Sooner Chem Liners.

She later decided to leave the oilfield and opened Let’s Sew on Milt Phillips in Seminole.

While there, Evelyn began selling radio advertising for KWSH of Wewoka.

Evelyn was a tireless worker and was very successful in all of her ventures.

Later in life, Evelyn focused her energies on giving back to the community of Seminole.

She very much enjoyed being a city council member and returned to the oilfield as the director of the Oil Museum.

She was involved since the inception of the Oil Museum and is largely responsible for making it what it is today.

One of Evelyn’s favorite hobbies was gardening.

She proudly gave most of her harvest away to friends and family. Evelyn also loved to sew, knit and needlepoint.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, a Seminole Rotary Club officer, Seminole Kiwanis, the Red Hat Society, and the Maple Grove "Strothers Chapel Restoration Committee".

Evelyn leaves behind to cherish her memory, husband Billy Jack of the home, sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Debbie Hammond of Shawnee, Chris and Kristi Hammond of Seminole, Rick and Melissa Willingham of Yukon, daughter Kathy Carter of Shawnee, daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Jerry Little of Choctaw;

Eight grandchildren, Candy Lozier, Tanner Wallace, Greg Little, Chris Little, Laura Little, Karli Hammond, Cade Hammond, Justin Willingham and Jaycee Willingham. Evelyn also had two great-grandchildren Cadence and Bailey Wallace.

Also surviving Evelyn are a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Wilma Fite of Paden, Oklahoma, brother and sister-in-law Steven and Marie Fite of Poteau, Oklahoma and sister Ellen White of Shawnee and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn had some very special friends whom she considered as sisters: Pat Howard of Midwest City, Gail Swindell of Oklahoma City and Joan John of Omaha, Nebraska.

Eveyln is preceded in death by her parents and one son-in-law Ric Carter.

A special thanks to Joshua and Nathan Shirley who were two special neighbors who helped Evelyn with yard work and with many things around the house.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church with Bill Wantland officiating.

Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Matt Lozier, Chris Little, Greg Little, Bryan Shirley, Joshua Shirley and the sixth bearer will be absent in memory of her close friend Dan Wallace.

Honorary bearers will be Jim Morgan, Thad Ashcraft, Steve Nelson, Tim Poplin, Chuck Chadick, Mike Dundee, Steve Saxon, John Griffin, D.D. Patterson, Kenny Pryor and Stu Phillips.

The family request Memorial Donations be made to the Oklahoma Oil Museum.

John Wilson

Bowlegs resident John Daniel Wilson, age 37, died Monday, March 8, 2010.

He was born May 6, 1972, to Marzie Brashears and John E. Wilson, in Redding, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Shawna K. (Cathey) Wilson; brothers, Jackie Wilson and Jasson Wilson; and his father.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

A private service was held in Antlers, under the direction of Mills and Coffee Funeral Home.

Zelma Wind

Zelma Marjory Yahola Wind, age 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at her home, in Cromwell.

She was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Okmulgee, to Lyman L. Yahola and Miley (Haynes) Yahola.

She grew up in the Okmulgee area. She had been a resident of Cromwell, for the past 46 years.

She retired from Big Yank, in Wewoka, after 27 years of employment. She also worked with Community Action, Inc., in Wewoka, for 8 years, employed 3 years with the Seminole County Clerks office as a receptionist, and worked on the Experience Works Program for the elderly, having retired again in 2008.

She was a member of the High Spring Baptist Church, of Okemah.

She is survived by her sons, Rev. Jesse Wind, of Cromwell, J.D. Wind, of Wellston, Richard Wind, of Wewoka, Tim Wind, of Cromwell, Thomas Wind, of Peoria, Ariz., Grover Wind, of Morris, and Kerry Sowder, of Cromwell; daughters, Ruth Ann Buie, of Ft. Smith, Ark., Ruby Bender, of Cromwell, and Millie Wind, of Wetumka; sisters, Liz Yahola, of Okemah, Lela Dunson, of Bixby, and Joyce Ann Yahola, of Wetumka; brothers, Thomas Yahola, of Wetumka, Harold Yahola, of Tulsa, and Leon Yahola, of Muskogee; 36 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lyman Yahola Jr.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at the High Spring Baptist Church, south of Okemah.

Interment will follow at the High Spring Cemetery.

There will also be a Wake Service held at 7 p.m., at the High Spring Church, on Sunday, Feb. the 14.

Visitation will take place at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home throughout the weekend.

Serving as active pallbearers will be: Russell Wind, Jeff Phillips, Charles Harley, Tommy Frank, Allan Wind, and Jerry Monday.

Honorary Bearers include: Perry Beaver, Pete Beaver, and Kerry Sowder.

Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Jesse Wind and assisted by Rev. Daniel Wind Jr.

Helen Winlock

Helen A. (Young) Winlock, 79 year-old, Seminole resident passed from this life on January 2, 2010, in Seminole County, Oklahoma.

She was born February 25, 1930 in Coalgate, Oklahoma, to parents Arthur Young and Gay (Henderson) Young.

Helen graduated from Coalgate High School and worked as a private nurse.

She enjoyed gardening flowers, rock hunting and garage sales.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Simon and Stacie Winlock, of McLoud, Oklahoma; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ebony and Darrel Wilkes, of Holdenville, Oklahoma, Wanda Howard and Tarry Epperley, both of Seminole, Oklahoma and Sandy and David McCart, of Holdenville, Oklahoma; one brother, Willie Osborn, of Lehigh, Oklahoma; three sisters, Charlene Isom and Hazel Foreman, of Coalgate, Oklahoma, and Claudette and Leman Holliway, of Ada, Oklahoma; several grandchildren; and great grandchildren also survive her as do a host of other family and dear friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Larry Chesser officiating.

Interment will follow at Little Cemetery located north of Seminole.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.

LaRome "L.A." Winrow

LaRome Demont "L.A." Winrow, 37, was called home to be with God on October 28, 2010 at OU Medical Center.

He was born on December 2, 1972 in Seminole Oklahoma.

He was the first child of Ginger Winrow.

He was baptized at an early age at Galilee Baptist Church in Seminole, Oklahoma.

"L.A." as he was known graduated from Seminole High School in 1991.

There he received many awards in football.

In his senior year, he received four player of the week awards, prep player of the year award and All District Offensive Player of the year.

L.A. moved to Florida and worked at a Polo outlet store for seven years.

Then he was transferred to Colorado where he worked for Polo until his failing health caused him to leave his job.

L.A. was preceded in death by his grandparents; Doretha Winrow, Marcell Jackson, Sr. and Ethel Jackson; Aunts Patricia Vanessa Washington and Johnnie Foxx.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Ginger Winrow of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Tara Winrow of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, brother Jamaal Walker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nieces, Ausha and Ashanti Baker both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nephew, Aerrington Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandfather, Roy Winrow, Sr. of Seminole, Oklahoma; great-grandmother, Beaulah Winrow of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; spiritual grandmother, Thelma Reese; Cousins, Ebony Harris and Tanisha Washington; his running buddies, Missy, Eddie, Alvin Jr., Myron, Rion, and Michael Bradshaw; his dad, Marcell Jackson, Jr. of Kansas; five brothers and two sisters; a very special aunt, Jackie Helem; cousins, Ray-Ray, Stephanie and Senae; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will always have L.A. in their hearts.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00, Noon on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the First Baptist Church located at 420 Reid Street, Seminole, Oklahoma with Rev. J.C. Simpson officiating. Interment will follow at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka.

Casket Bearers will be: Mark Reese, Eddie Louie, Alvin Fabre Jr., Myron Louie and Rion Louie.

Honorary Bearers will be: Roy Winrow Jr., Randy Winrow, Nathaniel Winrow, Michael Winrow, Roy Winrow III., and Chad Anderson.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Terry Womack

Terry Gene Womack, 57 of Seminole, formerly of Jenks, died Monday, March 15, 2010, in Midwest City.

He was born Feb. 23, 1953, to Norma Jean (Wright) and Leroy Oberg, in Wichita, Kan.

He graduated from the Oklahoma School of the Deaf in Sulphur.

He married Glenda Bullock July 20, 1996.

He was a retired ironworker and a member of Jenks First Christian Church.

He is survived by his father; daughters, Andrea Womack, of Glenpool, Brenda Maier, of Glenpool, and Tracy Tate, of Sapulpa; son, Waylon Womack, of New Jersey; brother, Jerry Oberg, of South Carolina; step-brother, Otis Holt, of California; step-sister, Debra Provolt, of California; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and mother.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 pm, Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Heath-Griffith Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dane Tyner officiating.

Interment will follow in Bixby City Cemetery under the direction of Heath-Griffith Funeral Home.

Ruby Wood

Ruby Lee (Stafford) Wood, 96 year-old, longtime Seminole County resident died on Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She was born November 14, 1913 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to parents Aulby Eldon Stafford and Effie Ruby (Hixon) Stafford.

Ruby moved from Ada, Oklahoma to Seminole in 1949.

Ruby earned her bachelors degree from East Central University in Ada.

She married Robert Paul Wood on January 13, 1933 in Ada, and he preceded her in death on February 13, 1995.

Ruby was a social worker for the Department of Human Services for 29 years in Wewoka retiring in 1978.

She is survived by two sons David E. Wood of Oklahoma City, and Dale L. Wood of Laurel, Mississippi; one daughter, Doris J. Bailey of Oklahoma City, six grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, one great grandson, one brother, William A. Stafford in 1980; two sisters, Alma Holdsclaw and Dorothy McDarment also preceded her in death.

A Memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at St. John’s Episcopal Church located at 5201 North Brookline in Oklahoma City.

Locally graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens two miles east of Seminole on Hwy 270.

Rev. David R. Stock will officiate both services.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
