Walter Royal Durham
Walter Royal Durham
Dad went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2003. He was 80 years old, born at Naravisa, New Mexico, August 8, 1922.
Born to a musical family, Dad learned to play the trombone at an early age and traveled with the family band to neighboring towns to perform.
He graduated from high school at Portales, New Mexico and went to work in the shipyards in San Francisco during World War II. He married Smoki (Anna Jean Smoke) on December 16, 1942. He had previously wooed her at her home in Clovis, New Mexico by serenading her outside her home with his trombone. The neighbors enjoyed the concert too, since he was standing in front of the wrong house.
Dad then played his trombone in San Francisco and Carson City, Nevada with various bands and Smoki on the piano before moving to Oklahoma City where he bacame a television technician for Sears. He then opened "Walt Durham TV" which was successful for him for approximately 25 years and had a security business before retiring.
Dad played with many bands around the Oklahoma City area over the years, he especially loved playing Dixieland.
Survived by 3 children, Jeff Durham, Linda Dever, Virginia (Ginger) Lemaster and four grandchildren, Angie Dubois, Ginger Durham, Jack Dever and Cliff Robertson. When Dad was younger our family spent many fun weekends at the lake, fishing, waterskiing and playing music.
Dad had a great sense of humor and an inquisitive mind, was very outgoing and made friends easily. He was a Shriner and a Mason, and participated by playing his trombone at charity functions. He tried to help others less fortunate than himself and truly wanted to understand their plight. Dad was a long time memer of Olivet Baptist CHuyrch, accepted Jesus as his personal savior and was baptized there on April 19, 1970.
Dad was zany, eccentric, totally lovable and always genuine and loads of fun and we will miss him terribly.
Services will be held at Mercer-Adams Chapel, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, Oklahoma, at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 14, 2003.
