She was born in Cowden, Oklahoma on May 3, 1912 to Ulysses Sherman and Lennie Mae (Collins) Walters, the eldest of ten children. She graduated from Cordell High School and attended one year at Southwestern College in Weatherford. She was united in marriage to Herman Dwight Smith, her childhood friend and sweetheart, on April 23, 1934,
Maud worked as a bookkeeper in the family implement business in Cordell, Oklahoma and later ran a small cafe in Hobart, Oklahoma. She and Dwight moved to Snyder, Oklahoma in 1944, where they were both community leaders and belonged to many civic clubs and organizations. Working side by side, they operated the John Deere franchise, serving the farm equipment needs of the community, later adding the Oldsmobile franchise. Maud loved music and, as a young girl, taught herself to play the piano and organ after listening to lessons being given to a younger sister. She was a very talented vocalist through high school and shared this God given talent in solos, ensembles, and choirs over a span of sixty-nine years. Maud was also a fifty year member of the Order of Eastern Star, having served as both a Worthy Matron and a District Deputy of O.E.S.
She and Dwight moved to Oklahoma City in 1964, where Maud worked for a short time in the accounting department at John A. Brown. She was then employed as the office manager for Bolen Imports Mercedes dealership and retired from that position in 1989 after twenty-five years of service. Maud always enjoyed traveling and her yearly excursions with her daughter, loved her family, especially all of her grandchildren, and was a faithful member of the Mayfair Heights United Methodist Church. Her family will always remember ‘BeBo,` as a very special lady who was always young at heart and who gave so generously of herself and her love.
