William Prentiss Porter
February 10, 1941 - June 10, 2013
William “Bill” Prentiss Porter, 72, of Bethany/Warr Acres went to his heavenly Father on June 10, 2013. He was much loved and will be sorely missed. Born in Altus, Oklahoma, on February 10, 1941, to Asa Nehemiah Porter and Norma Standley Porter, his early years were spent in Illinois and Oklahoma near the sites where his father was an engineer and his mother was a teacher. They moved to Oklahoma City when he was a young boy and he was active in the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City and accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, becoming an Eagle Scout.
Bill graduated in the first graduating class of Putnam City High School, and went on to earn his BS in Business at Oklahoma City University (1963) and his Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma (1966). He served on active duty with the U.S. Army (National Guard) and then returned to practice law on the south side of Oklahoma City in 1967, having a general practice which included civil and criminal cases, contract law, trusts and wills, with a strong emphasis on family law and probate. He was admitted to practice law for the Supreme Court of Oklahoma and the Western District of Oklahoma, as well as the United States Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
He was known as an honest and generous lawyer, who might be running a little late to get to court but who would hurry in just in time to save the day. He was very civic minded and was an active member of the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers since 1969, as well as the American Trial Lawyers Association since 1996. He taught evening legal classes at Oklahoma City University for several years, and he was also a Mason of the 32nd degree, an Aide to the Potentate of the Shriners, and President of the Lions Club 1977-1978.
He met his wife of 39 years, Mary, on a 1973 Christmas Eve blind date, arranged by her cousin, to which he was, of course, late. Despite this, Mary couldn’t resist his smile and they had a whirlwind romance between San Antonio and Oklahoma City and were married by June 22, 1974. Sticking together through sickness and in health, they raised two children and cared for many extended family members (and many pets).
Despite major physical health challenges in the last several years, and with essential help from his wife and family, Bill continued to practice law, and won his last case in court in January 2013. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary McCollum Porter; his son, Christopher Porter; his daughter, Ashley Porter Myers; his son-in-law, Zach Myers; and two grandchildren, Sophia Caitlyn Myers and Grayson Lane Myers. His brother, Dr. A. Standley Porter, with whom he was close, preceded him to be with the Lord, as did his mother and father, and great-nephew, Josh. Bill will be missed as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, colleague and friend.
Services will be held at 10am, Friday, June 14, at Mercer-Adams Funeral Home, 3925 North Asbury Avenue, 405-495-4363. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in the name of William Prentiss Porter.
