John Edward Andrew
(October 1, 1923 - October 9, 2011)

John Edward Andrew Born: Oct 01, 1923 Deceased: October 9, 2011

He was preceded in death by his father Raymond G. Andrew, mother Esther L. Andrew, Brother Paul Ray Andrew, Son Danny Ray Andrew and Daughter Connie L. Sellers (Andrew) of Sapulpa.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 68 years Bonnie Louise Andrew (Holderby), Daughter Donna Rae Smith & husband Jerry of Bixby, two grandchildren J. D. Sellers & wife Summer of Sapulpa, Angela R. Holmes & Husband Jeremy of Sapulpa, and two great grand children Andrea L. Davis & Brittany R. Armer, both of Sapulpa.

John Andrew, a lifetime Sapulpa resident, graduated Sapulpa High School in 1943 and soon after was working as dispatcher for the Highway Patrol Department in Claremore Oklahoma.

He remained there until 1945, after realizing that he and Louise missed their friends and family in Sapulpa.

He was then employed at Douglas Aircraft and remained there until 1969 until the temporary closing of the Tulsa facility.

He then returned to the work he loved after being accepted to the Sapulpa Police Department as lead dispatcher and remained there until retirement in June of 1987, all the while also doing private security work for Wal-Mart.

He has received numerous awards and commendations throughout his career in law enforcement and also had the privilege of serving as part of the "original" Emergency Management Service (known then as Civil Defense) in Sapulpa for over 35 years.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #94 and was a founding member of the Sapulpa CB Radio club.

He enjoyed being with his family, camping and fishing (especially after retirement), baseball and was also a huge fan and collector of old western movies.

John was a solid support and anchor for his family throughout his and Louise life together, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him and working beside him.

Services will be held in the Chapel at South Heights Cemetery Wednesday October 12, 2011 at 11am.

Services will be performed by the Reverend Glen Hood.

John Andrew was of the Baptist faith.

Interment to follow at South Heights Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, OK.

Eva Janice Sanders
(November 11, 1937 - September 12, 2011)

Eva Janice Sanders, 73 of Tulsa passed away on Monday, September 12, 2011 at her home.

She was born on November 11, 1937 in Bethany, OK. to Bennett and Buelah (States) Willey.

She was always a pastor’s wife, an artist, interior decorator and college professor.

She had a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bennett and Buelah Willey.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Hiram E. Sanders of the home; children, Teri Sellers and husband Pete of Sapulpa, OK, Traci Klemm and husband David of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Eden Sellers, Wyatt Sellers, and Katie Klemm; siblings, Lavelle Garland of Bethany, OK, and Lyle Willey of Minco, OK.

Funeral services have been set for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Central Church Of The Nazarene, Tulsa, OK.

Officiating will be Pastor Steven Lester, Dr. Russell Human, and Dr. David McKellips.

Bearers will be Reverend Jim Thornton, Reverend John Williamson, Mr. Rick Knight, Jerry Argo, Jared Chesnut, and Mike Arrambide.

Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Tulsa, OK.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, OK.

Dorothy Jean Upshaw
(September 22, 1927 - August 14, 2011)

Dorothy Jean Upshaw 83, passed from this life and into the arms of her sweet Savior on Sunday, August 14, 2011.

Jean was born in Sapulpa on September 22, 1927 to Wesley M. and Mary Ella (Holland) Charles.

She graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1946.

She married her sweetheart, Hobart A. Upshaw on December 10,1947 and they had celebrated 50 wonderful years together at the time of his passing in May of 1998.

Jean loved cooking, sewing, gardening and just being outdoors.

She was a lifelong Freewill Baptist and loved to read her Bible and listen to Gather Gospel music.

She was a loving, caring, nurturing mother and grandmother who taught her children that the love of God, service to others and a compassionate heart were necessary qualities to navigate this life.

Jean is survived by her children Wade Upshaw and his wife Linda of Osawatomie, Kansas, Jeanne Whitaker and her husband Larry of Sapulpa and Debbie Shaw of Sapulpa.

She also leaves behind eight grandchildren; Todd Upshaw, Trent Upshaw, Travis Upshaw, Terry Upshaw, David Magee II, Debby Thrailkill, Shane Shaw, and Meleah Shaw.

Fourteen great grandchildren: Brittany, Blaine, Abby, Riley, Zack, Brooke, Erin, Hailey, Ethan, Alan, Mikey, Makayla, Brett and Sarah.

She also leaves behind sisters: Jane Oswalt of San Antonio, Texas and Mary Davenport of Sapulpa and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to recognize the loving care of St. Johns Hospice nurses Connie, Sharon and Bobbi and hospice aide Katie over the past 16 months.

We would also like to thank the caring staff of Ranch Terrace Nursing Home for their compassion and care of the past three months.

Funeral services will be 10:00a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Smith Funeral Home Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Officiating will be the Reverend Lynn King. Bearers will be Todd Upshaw, Trent Upshaw, Travis Upshaw, Terry Upshaw, David Magee, and Shane Shaw.

Interment to follow at South Heights Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, OK.

Larry R. Wells
(April 19, 1944 - September 28, 2011)

Larry Ross Wells of Sapulpa passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at his home.

He was born on April 21, 1944 in Brunswick, Maine to Luke and Gertrude (Cotter) Wells.

He was a business owner in downtown Sapulpa for 18 years.

He had a love of country music and was an accomplished drummer.

Larry was a coordinator in the early years of Sapulpa Fest and organized numerous fundraisers with fellow musicians around Green Country.

He served as county and city director of Civil Emergency Management and was a 16 year member of the Sapulpa Chapter of Oddfellows.

He is preceded in death by his parents Luke & Gertrude Wells; brother William (Bill) Wells; sister Kathryn (Kathy) White; daughter Brenda Honeycutt; grandson Joshua Honeycutt and father-in-law Richard Shelton.

He is survived by his wife Sheila (Shelton) Wells of the home; daughters Debbi Boyne and husband Patrick of Tulsa; Carrie Wendt and husband Skip of Tulsa; Lisa Neal of Davenport, OK; sons Randy Wells of Tulsa; Robert Wells and fiancé Stephanie Miller of Sapulpa and Luke Wells of Sapulpa; grandchildren Kayla and Spencer Wendt; Daniel and Emiliee Neal; mother-in-law Janice Shelton.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30 at Smith Funeral Chapel, Sapulpa.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.

Artie Davis Burgess
(December 16, 1920 - September 30, 2011)

Artie Davis Burgess passed from this life September 30, 2011.

She was born in Sapulpa, Ok. December 16,1920, and remained there most of her life, except for ten years when she and her husband, Hughes Burgess lived in Henryetta, Ok.

Their son, Ric Burgess built them a new home at the old farm where Hughes was born and reared.

But even then, that was not home-it was not Sapulpa.

Artie attended Sapulpa Schools until her Junior year and finished her schooling in Okmulgee at the NYA School for Girls.

She worked for eighteen years for Newberry's Co., and then for eight years at Anthony's where she retired.

Her hobby was traveling with Hughes in their home on wheels.

They would meet-up with many of their life-long friends and have such a good time.

Artie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sapulpa.

She was married in Okmulgee, Ok. to Hughes August 9,1941.

They were married for 67 years before Hughes passed away in 2007.

They had two children, Ric Burgess and Beverly Hughes.

Artie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hughes Burgess, a son, Ric Burgess, a grandson, Daniel W. Hughes, two brothers, Udell and Bill Davis, a sister, Reba Bilby of Coffeyville, Kansas.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Hughes, daughter-in-law, Mary Burgess of Fort Worth, Texas, sister-in-law, Shirley Burgess Phillips and husband Bob, of Hodgen, Ok., a niece, Nadine Blevins of Wichita, Kansas, and two nephews, Don Bilby and wife, Mary of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Brock C. Davis of Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Thank you Patty Harper, for being with Artie for four years, caring for and loving her.

Also, thank you to Traditions Home Care; especially to Carolyn and Tamara.

A special thanks to Hospice- InFmity Care of Tulsa, who made her comfortable during her last days.

Artie may be viewed at any time thru Monday evening.

Graveside services were held at Salt Creek Cemetery on Tuesday October 4, 2011 at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Dr. Allen Schneider officiating.

The cemetery is located between Okmulgee and Henryetta in the Wilson Community.

Take 75 Highway and turn on the Wilson exit; follow this road for about 7 miles.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smith's Funeral Home in Sapulpa.

Merle Lou Johnson Mullen
(November 14, 1916 - October 7, 2011)

Merle Lou (Johnson) Mullen, 94, died Friday, October 7, 2011 at the Clare Bridge Memory Care Home in Eagan, Minnesota, where she lived since 2007 near her daughter.

Services are scheduled for Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, 1208 South Main Street.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour before the funeral.

Merle was born November 24, 1916 to Lewis and Katie (Allred) Johnson at Stratford, Oklahoma.

She graduated as valedictorian from Healdton High School, and she earned degrees from Southeastern State Teachers’ College in Durant and the University of Oklahoma.

She began a forty-three year teaching career at Ringling, Oklahoma, and in 1939, while teaching in Seminole, she met and married the football coach, Moon Mullen.

She also taught Business Education in Wewoka and Sapulpa.

Merle and Moon were active in the First Baptist Church, with Merle teaching Sunday School and also leading Cub Scouts.

She was active in Athenaeum, AAUW, and Lady Lions.

After retirement, she and Moon trailered for eighteen years, spending the winters in South Texas and summers in Colorado.

Merle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 67 years, Clarence (Moon) Mullen in 2007; two sisters: Maurine Pool and Monita McCauley; four brothers: Haskell, Robert L, Doyle, and Ferrel Johnson; and a grandson, Tim Mullen.

She is survived by her brother, Derrel, of Ardmore, her son, Carl and wife Sharon Mullen of Katy, Texas, her daughter Martha and husband Ian MacAlpine of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and grandsons John and wife Tonya Mullen of Katy, Texas, Mike and wife Susie Mullen of Los Angeles, California, Brett MacAlpine of Wheeling, Illinois, Colin and wife Shannon MacAlpine of Austin, Texas, and six great-grandchildren.

The family wants to thank Clare Bridge Memory Care Home and St. Jude’s Hospice of Eagan, MN for their loving care of Merle these last three years.

Following the funeral service interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, OK.

Violet Lee (Matlock) Banks
(March 6, 1920 - September 7, 2011)

Violet L. Banks, 91, of Kellyville OK, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, September 7 at the Ranch Terrace Nursing Home in Sapulpa.

Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday September 10, 2011, at the First Baptist Church, 306 E Camden, Kellyville, OK.

Officiating will be the Pastor Robby Gaches.

Viewing will be from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday September 9, 2011 at Smith Funeral Home in Sapulpa.

Bearers will be Lewis Banks, Daryl Banks, Olen Banks, Curtis Banks, Randall Banks, and Dan Banks.

Interment will be at Sunrise Cemetery following the services.

Violet was born March 6, 1920, in Boone County, Arkansas.

She has been a resident of the Creek County area for most of her life.

She was a home-maker during the years her sons were growing up, and then worked for Bartlett Collins Hospital before retiring in 1985.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Banks, parents, Rebecca and Riley Matlock, brother Herbert Matlock, sisters Roxy Feeback, Ava Hellard, Vada Andrews, and Lola Gellar.

She is survived by her sons Lewis (Kathryn), Daryl (Sue), Olen, Curtis (Cheryl), Randall (Libby), Dan, brother Troy Matlock, and sister Pauline White.

She also has many grandchildren and great grandchildren that she loved and cherished.

Violet was an active member of the Sunrise Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, OK.
