Arthur Jimmie (A.J.) Cannon

Funeral services for Arthur Jimmie (A.J.) Cannon, 86, were held Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at the Church of Christ in Blanchard with Brother Lloyd Lee and Brother Stephen Coley officiating. Interment was at Blanchard Cemetery under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home in Blanchard.

Mr. Cannon died June 17, 2001.

He was born May 1, 1915 at Brownwood, Texas, the son of Miles and Florence (Keith) Cannon.

Mr. Cannon served in the Navy during World War II. He was a longtime member of the Church of Christ.

The Cannons lived in the Purcell and Lexington areas for over 32 years. He worked for Southwestern States Telephone and retired from General Telephone after 32 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Viola, of 64 years; children, Jud Cannon and his wife, Bonnie, of Springfield, Mo., Van Cannon and his wife, Karlee, of Coweta, Naomi Baker and her husband, Johnny, of Blanchard; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Sherrill “Corky” Cavnar

Funeral services for Sherrill “Corky” Cavnar, 72, of Purcell were held Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Purcell with the Rev. Wayne Brown and the Rev. Preston Collins officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.

Mr. Cavnar died June 14, 2001 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

He was born May 29, 1929 at Purcell, the fourth of six children of Delbert Cayce Cavnar and Allie Katherine Harper Cavnar. He was reared at Purcell, graduating from Purcell High School in 1947. While in high school he was active in FFA and in football, basketball, baseball and track.

Two years after high school, he met his wife-to-be , Ernestine Jackson of Wynnewood. They were married on Aug. 28, 1949.

Mr. Cavnar had worked at Tinker Air Force Base and for Gulf Oil Company before making his career as a computer programmer with the FFA in Oklahoma City. He and his family lived in Midwest City from 1957 until 1973. At that time they moved back to Purcell, the area he called home.

Throughout his life, Mr. Cavnar was an active member of the Baptist Church. He became a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Midwest City and was presently a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Purcell. He had served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School and had been the chairman of deacons several times.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Minnie Unger; his brother, Will Cavnar and his son-in-law, Terry Harlan.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ernestine Cavnar, of the home; two sons, Paul Cavnar and his wife, Vicky, of Oklahoma City and Terry Cavnar and his wife, Rhonda, of Moore; a daughter, Karen Bollenbach and her husband, Louis, of Purcell; one brother, Wesley Cavnar and his wife, Peg, of Rosedale; two sisters, Lanora Standerfer of Purcell and Ellen Goedecke of Claremore; four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Goedecke, Tom and David Cavnar, John Standerfer, Howard Gale Harper and Robert Woods.

Honorary pallbearers were the Purcell First Baptist Church family.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Vehicle Fund.

Ricky McKelvain

Funeral services for Ricky McKelvain, 41, of Lindsay were held Saturday, June 9, 2001 at Yoakum-Damet Memory Chapel with the Rev. Russell Newville officiating. Interment was at the Hopping Cemetery under the direction of Yoakum-Damet Funeral Home in Purcell.

Mr. McKelvain died June 6, 2001 after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 25, 1959 at Duncan, the son of Thomas and Alice (Short) McKelvain.

He enjoyed attending the senior citizens dances in Whitebead and Pauls Valley among other outings.

Mr. McKelvain was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rosedale.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Merle and Bug Short and Foster McKelvain and Velma Barnes.

Survivors include his parents; Tom and Alice McKelvain of Lindsay and his brothers, Larry McKelvain of Red Oak, Texas, and Gary McKelvain of Arlington, Texas.

Doris A. Carr

Funeral services for Doris A. Carr, 74, of Newcastle were held Aug. 8, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Newcastle with the Rev. Charles Elmore and the Rev. Bill Gentry officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery at Tuttle under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carr died Aug. 6, 2001 at her residence.

She was born Jan. 20, 1927 in Tuttle, the second of four children of Malcom Jefferson Cooley and Eva Mae Stephens.

On June 16, 1946 she married J.L., Carr in Tuttle. They lived there after they were married and near the Carr family home place where they continued to live at the time of her death.

As a young mother she was a homemaker and a stay-at-home mom. She later became a volunteer dispatcher for the Newcastle Fire Department and owned and operated the Whatzit Shop and Auction in Newcastle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, James and Cecil Cooley and a daughter-in-law, Shirley L. Carr.

Survivors include her husband, J.L. Carr, of the home; one daughter, Melinda Keith and her husband, Billy, of Newcastle; two sons, James Carr of Stillwater and Kenneth Carr and his wife, Julia, of Newcastle; one brother-in-law, Bruce Carr and his wife, Cherry, of Newcastle; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Christopher Parker, Jeremy Keith, Donnie Wynne, Lloyd Anthony, Billy Keith and Mike Talkington.

Honorary pallbearers were Gene Smith, Kenneth Walker, Stanley Bolles and John Hahn.

Memorial donations may be made to the Newcastle Fire Department in her honor.

Charles Stanley “Charlie” Fox

Funeral services for Charles Stanley “Charlie” Fox, 64, of Newcastle were held Aug. 7, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Newcastle with the Rev. Bill Gentry officiating. Interment was at Blanchard Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home.

Mr. Fox died Aug. 4, 2001 at Norman Regional Hospital after a short battle with brain cancer.

He was born July 25, 1937 in Oklahoma City, the son of C.B. and Cloie Edna Stanley Fox. He was reared at Newcastle on the family dairy farm and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1955.

Mr. Fox attended the University of Oklahoma for a short time, then went to Cameron College in Lawton where he received his associate’s degree. He completed his formal education at Oklahoma State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in entomology.

After completing his degree, he was accepted to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Navy in January of 1961 and received his commission in June of 1961 at Newport, R.I. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Oak Hill until he left active duty in 1965. He continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserves for many years.

Mr. Fox married the former Lula Cleora Hendrix in Non, Okla., on May 11, 1963.

He began a career with the Sears and Roebuck Company in 1965, working his way up the management chain, in stores in Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Arkansas. He retired from Sears in 1993 and returned with his wife to the family farm in Newcastle.

Mr. Fox and his brother, Jim, began working the farm, raising both beef and show cattle under the name of Fox Brothers Farms.

Mr. Fox was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newcastle, serving as chairman of the personnel committee as well as singing in the choir and participating in the church’s dramatic presentations. He also served several years on the Newcastle School Board and was an A.A.U. Girls Basketball coach.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Fox, of the home; two daughters, Sandy Belschner and her husband, Brent, of Newcastle and Teri Roy and her husband, Greg, of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Jim Fox and his wife, Terri, of Newcastle; a sister, Janet Tucker and her husband, Tommy, of Las Vegas, Nev., and eight grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Charles Fox Memorial which will benefit the Newcastle Veterans Park and Library at the Sooner State Bank in Newcastle or Tuttle. You may call 405/387-4391 for more information regarding the memorial fund.

Rodger D. Leonard

Funeral services for Rodger D. Leonard, 51, of Lexington will be held today (Thursday), Aug. 9, 2001 at Vassar Church, I-35 North and Mulhall Road near Coyle, with the Rev. Ralph Yost. Interment will be at Clarkson Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home.

Mr. Leonard died Aug. 6, 2001 at his home in Lexington.

He was born Nov. 28, 1949 in Stillwater, the youngest of four children of Ralph Rolland Leonard and Dora Ann Dobson. He was reared in Clovis, N.M., and graduated from Clovis High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served two years in Korea during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged in 1971.

Six months after returning home to Clovis, Mr. Leonard was involved in an auto accident that left him paralyzed for the rest of his life. He enrolled in college in New Mexico and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.

Mr. Leonard was a talented nail artist, which included making objects and figurines out of nails. He also worked on electrical equipment.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wanda June Williams.

Survivors include one brother, Ralph Wayne Leonard and his wife, Wanda, of Portales, N.M.; one sister, Barbara Cravens and her husband, Everett of Lexington; five nieces and seven nephews.

Jimmy “Big Daddy” Mack

A memorial service for Jimmy “Big Daddy” Mack, 82, of Purcell was held Friday, Aug. 3, 2001 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell with the Rev. Barry Clagg officiating.

Mr. Mack died Aug. 1, 2001 at Magnolia Manor Care Center in Lexington.

He was born Nov. 12, 1918.

Mr. Mack was a Marine and a veteran of World War II. He lived in California for many years and was a chauffeur and a cook. He later moved to Tulsa before coming to Purcell in the early 1980s.

He was a barbecue cook in Purcell for a short time.

Survivors include his friends, the Alex and Patsy Fields family of Purcell, Lisa Wells of Lindsay, Mark Sparlin of Purcell and the staff at Magnolia Manor Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Purcell Public Library, 919 N. 9th, Purcell, OK 73080.
