Alfred Lee Bilyeu, 71
Alfred Lee Bilyeu (AL Bilyeu) passed away peacefully in sleep on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at the age of 71. AL Bilyeu, a 25 year resident of Durant, Okla., was born on Nov. 22, 1937, in San Bernardino, Calif. After graduating from high school, AL married Lyndale Hambridge in 1957, and in the same year started his first business called “AL’s Upholstery.” AL and Lyn had four children: Allen Lee, Sherry Lynn, Carey Mark, and David Scott. In 1971, he moved his upholstery business to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and then in 1984 relocated to Durant where he opened Durant Import Sales. Over the next 25 years, AL grew Durant Import Sales from a small weekend auction house to a 12,000 square foot wholesale business. With the help of his long-time friend and Warehouse Manager Norm Akers, and other dedicated employees, Durant Import Sales continues to meet the needs of thousands of business owners all over the region and surrounding states. In 2002, AL sold Durant Import Sales to his daughter Sherry Lynn Cecil, and retired. Although he loved playing bridge and enjoyed a great cribbage tournament, his all-time favorite recreational activity was playing penny slot machines at the surrounding arcades and casinos, where he had many friends and acquaintances.
AL is survived by three children: Sherry Lynn Cecil, Carey Mark Bilyeu, and David Scott Bilyeu; seven grandchildren: Charles O. Cecil, David L. Bilyeu, Scott A. Bilyeu, Ashley I. Cecil, Michael A. Bilyeu, Kimberley S. Bush (formerly Cecil), and Christina Bilyeu; six great-grandchildren: Angel N. Brames, Tayla J. Bilyeu, Payton J. Bilyeu, Hayden L. Bush, Jordan Sheree Cecil, and Makyna D. Bilyeu; his niece Lyn Lynch, and daughter-in-law Wanda Bilyeu. AL was predeceased in death by his son Allen Lee Bilyeu, father Luther Bilyeu, mother Ella Bilyeu, brother Leon Bilyeu, and sister Evelyn Toy.
Over the years, AL became a friend to those in need. There are many people in the Durant area that benefited from AL’s charity and generosity, especially when they ran into hard times. AL helped people not only financially, but with expert business advise, financial advise, and in dealing with personal issues. If AL was a friend to you, please join friends and family as we celebrate his life at his memorial service on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, 2 p.m., at Brown’s Funeral Home, Durant, Okla. Pastor Darel Bunch, Calvary Baptist Church, will preside.
As a friend to those in need, AL would prefer that friends and family make a memorial donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, 800-272-3900, in lieu of flowers or other gifts. Making a donation in memory of AL can be a valuable and positive way to celebrate his life and legacy, while providing hope for future generations.
Brown’s Funeral Service, Durant and Texoma Cremation Service are handling the arrangements.
