Joseph Karleskint
COMMERCE, Okla. - Joseph Otto Karleskint, 85, 403 N. Maple St., died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mr. Karleskint was born Oct. 17, 1911, at Miami. He moved in 1972 to Grove from the state of California. He moved to Commerce from Miami. He was a pipeline worker in the state of California. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Miami, Disabled American Veterans of Ottawa County, the Floyd L. Perry American Legion Post at Miami, and the National Rifle Association.
Surviving is a sister, Margaret Links, state of California.
Arrangements are pending with Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home, Miami.
Ida Killough
MIAMI, Okla. - Ida L. "Midge" Killough, 83, 21 F St. S.W., died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Baptist Regional Health Center of an illness.
Mrs. Killough was born Dec. 27, 1913, at Pawhuska. She has lived most of her life in the Quapaw and Miami area. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Miami.
Her husband, Buck Killough, preceded her in death.
A son preceded her in death.
Surviving are a son, Jan Killough, Miami; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Quapaw Tribal Building, east of Quapaw. Charles Dawes and Bob Whitebird will officiate. Indian graveside rites will be conducted in GAR Cemetery, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Tony King, Jess McKibben, Ron Burkybile, Olin Gokey, Matt Deatherage and Tom "T.C." Bear.
Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher.
Galen Messer
QUAPAW, Okla. - Galen P. "Chuck" Messer, 82, 405 Kentucky, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, at his home of an illness.
Mr. Messer was born Sept. 1, 1914, at Galena, Kan. He moved three years ago to Quapaw from Miami. He worked for 20 years and retired as an operator engineer for Kenny Construction Co., Chicago, Ill. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Picher, and a member of Operator Engineers No. 150, Chicago.
Surviving are three daughters, Billie Marie Lacy, Tulsa, and Shirley Jean Baker and Janice Dawson, both of Miami; two sons, Galen F. Messer, Indian Springs, Nev., and William Lynn Messer, state of Illinois; a brother, Ted Messer, Gonzales, La.; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher. The Rev. Ed McFall will officiate. Burial will be in Willow Lawn Memorial Park, Mundelein, Ill.
Irvin Barnes
MIAMI, Okla. - Irvin Jenks Barnes, 60, Belen, N.M., a former Miami resident, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at his home after an illness of several months.
Mr. Barnes was born Nov. 18, 1936, in Miami. He had lived in the Miami and Quapaw area most of his life. He moved to New Mexico nine years ago.
He was retired from the Bureau of Indian Service, having worked in Alaska, Utah, New Mexico and California. He also had worked for the Seneca Indian School at Wyandotte.
He was a member of the Loyal Shawnee and Delaware Indian tribes. He was a member of the Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Barnes; two sons, Brett Barnes, Miami, and Irvin Barnes Jr., Nome, Alaska; a daughter, Sheila Osborn, Perkins; five brothers, Joe Barnes, Baxter Springs, Kan., David Barnes and Clifford Barnes, both of Quapaw, Michael Barnes, Miami, and Richard Barnes, Picher; a sister, Cleora Scott, Sperry; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher.
The Rev. Don Greenfeather will officiate.
Burial will be in Lewis Shawnee Cemetery, White Oak.
Indian rites will be conducted by Victoria Daugherty.
Pallbearers will be Charles Wilson, Edward Scott, Bobby Barnes, Bill Barnes, Clifford Barnes Jr., Richard Barnes III and Ben Barnes.
The body will lie in state at the home of Ron and Wink Froman, Cayuga Drive, Quapaw.
Doris Brokaw
FAIRLAND, Okla. - Doris Ann Brokaw, 59, Fairland, died at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at a nursing home in Grove after a long illness.
Miss Brokaw was born June 13, 1937, near Tiff City.
She lived all of her life in the Fairland area.
She was a charter member of Midway Missionary Baptist Church, Fairland.
Survivors include her mother, Stella Brokaw, Fairland; and one sister, Faye Taffner, Fairland.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ralston Cemetery on Monkey Island.
The Rev. J.M. Elmer and the Rev. A.J. Johnson will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove.
Marie Gorman
MIAMI, Okla. - Marie Elfreda Gorman, 84, Miami, was pronounced dead Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at her home of apparent natural causes.
Mrs. Gorman was born Oct. 29, 1912, at Joplin, Mo.
She moved in 1945 to Miami from the state of California. She was a custodian at Eagle-Picher Industries, Miami.
She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Miami, and was active in the church's Keen Agers Class.
Her husband, Kenneth Earl Gorman, died June 17, 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Gerald Gorman, Tonkawa, Okla., and Kenneth Gorman, Miami; a daughter, Doris Wallace, Miami; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at GAR Cemetery, Miami.
The Rev. Clyde Stilley will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Jim Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
Lorena A. Parsons
COMMERCE, Okla. - Lorena A. Parsons, 79, Commerce, died at 9:27 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami.
Mrs. Parsons was born June 17, 1917 at Granby.
She had lived in Commerce since 1923.
She had taught school in Commerce for nine years, had worked at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, and had worked for B.F. Goodrich for five years.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Commerce.
She married Carl Parsons on Oct. 17, 1936.
He survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Terry Lee Parsons, Hastings, Neb.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
Bill Ritchey will officiate.
Burial will be in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Bill Higgins, Durward Ellis, Merle Smith, Nate Gibbs, Charles Meeker and Bob Meeker.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
