Betty Dowty
MIAMI, Okla. - Betty Jean Dowty, 66, Miami, died at 2:08 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at a Miami nursing home after an illness.
Mrs. Dowty was born June 12, 1930 in Ottawa County near Seneca, Mo.
She had lived in the Ottawa County area all her life.
She was a homemaker and a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church, Miami.
She married Ronald Winston Dowty on Dec. 12, 1947 at Vinita.
He survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, John Dowty and Larry Dowty, both of Miami, Okla.; a daughter, Judy Dowty, Miami; her mother, Myrtle McDaniel, Joplin; three brothers, Charles Lacy, San Leandro, Calif., Ronald Lacy, Raymore, and Chester Lacy, Carl Junction; and two grandsons.
Services are pending with Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
Jack Smith
PICHER, Okla. - Jack Kelsey Smith, 84, Tahlequah, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Wednesday.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 29, 1912 in Muskogee, Okla.
He moved from Muskogee and attended school in Treece, Kan., and high school in Picher.
He worked for the Wilbur Mine in Picher until he joined the Army during World War II.
When he returned, he worked for Spencer Chemical Co., Riverton, Kan., from 1945 to 1969.
He then moved to Baytown, Texas, where he worked for Gulf/Chevron Petrochemical Co.
He returned to Tahlequah in 1988.
He was a member of Tahlequah First United Methodist Church.
He was a life member of the American Legion and served as commander of Picher American Post No. 213.
He was a member of the Oatta Lodge No. 492, the Miami Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 107 and the Picher election board.
He married Dorothy Edna McKee on Oct. 17, 1937.
She preceded him in death on March 22, 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Wickliff, Tahlequah, and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be Saturday at Paul Thomas Funeral Chapel, Miami.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Northeast Oklahoma Veterans Funeral Detail in GAR Cemetery, Miami.
Pallbearers will be James Smith, Kelsey Wickliffe, Kyle Wickliffe, Ron Sparkman, Dennie McKee and Spot Cawyer.
Family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home.
Lea Darby
Lela Louise "Lea" Darby, 72, 5300 McClelland Park Blvd., [Joplin, MO] died at 12:52 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin after a long illness.
Mrs. Darby was born March 27, 1924, at Bunch, Okla. She moved to Joplin in 1947.
She was graduated from Sequoia Indian School, Tahlequah, Okla.
She was a licensed cosmetologist and owned the former Lela's Beauty Salon before she retired in 1984.
She was a full-blooded Cherokee and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
She was a member of Earl J. Bruton Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, Post No. 534, and the Rebekah and Eagles lodges.
She married Clarence Darby on Aug. 19, 1946, at Seattle, Wash. He died April 8, 1996.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Darby, Terry Darby and Jerry Darby, all of Joplin; a daughter, Wanda Wright, Joplin; a sister, Alice Cochran, Joplin; two brothers, Jess Johnson, Elk City, Okla., and Walter Johnson, Abilene, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary.
The Rev. Thomas Still will officiate.
Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anderson, Larry Knight, Bob St. Clair, Cecil Williams, Richard Whited and Floyd Woolever.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family will be at the home of Terry Darby, 3023 Connecticut Ave.
Helen Jones
MIAMI, Okla. - Helen H. Jones, 83, died at 2:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at Baptist Regional Health Center, Miami, after a long illness.
Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 11, 1913 at Uniontown, Kan.
She moved to Miami in 1933. She worked in Miami for J.C. Penney as a sales clerk until 1952.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Miami.
She married Claud R. Jones on July 25, 1942.
He died Feb. 16, 1976.
Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Bates, Pottsboro, Texas, and Jean McCalla, Dayton, Ohio; and two brothers, Willard House, Rochester, Mich., and Robert E. Hines, Denver, Colo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home Chapel, Miami.
The Rev. Bob Barker will officiate.
Burial will be in Glenn-Abbey Cemetery, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Jack Smith, Rex Painter, Willi Osborn, Rob Kimbrough, John Finley III, and Russell Orcutt.
Arrangements are under the direction of the funeral home.
Carl Marshall
PICHER, Okla - Carl F. Marshall, 73, 208 S. Ella, Picher, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at Leigh Manor, Picher, after a long illness.
Mr. Marshall was born Oct. 22, 1923, at Gravette, Ark.
He moved to Picher from Commerce, and had lived in the Picher area for 32 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He worked for United Iron and Metal Co. in Picher for 22 years.
He also worked at Hart Salvage Yard, Commerce, for three years.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans in Commerce.
He married Norma Payton on Nov. 7, 1942 at Commerce.
She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Carla Dieter, Salem, Ore., Linda Smith, Miami, and Lillian Smith, Sweetwater, Texas; two brothers, Walter Marshall and Tommy Lee Marshall, both of Commerce; a sister, Irene Sherard, Miami; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Harlen Tyler
MIAMI, Okla. - Harlen L. Tyler, 79, 1417 Morgan Circle, Miami, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mr. Tyler was born Jan. 30, 1918, at Paden.
He was graduated from Paden High School in 1937.
He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M; College, Miami.
He was a Navy veteran.
He was a retired food service manager for Cantine Corp., and served as manager of Goodrich Cafe, Miami, for 18 years.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God, Miami.
He was a member of the American Legion, Scottish Rite and the Shriners.
He married Bonnie G. Vanderslice on Feb. 14, 1941, at Meeker.
She survives.
Additional survivors include four daughters, Sue Tyler, Miami, Phyllis Hess and Helen Stratton, both of Claremore, and Dixie Smalley, Denton, Texas; two sons, Bill Tyler, Houston, Texas, and John Tyler, Claremore; a brother, Howard Tyler, state of Oklahoma; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Assembly of God, Miami.
The Rev. Gerald L. Baser will officiate.
He will be assisted by Bill Tyler.
Burial will be in Glenn-Abbey Cemetery, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Chris Stratton, Tyler Tanner, David Stratton, John Tanner, Zach Tyler, Ryan Tanner, Nick Tyler and Joe Tyler.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home Chapel, Miami.

Winford Richardson
BERNICE, Okla. - Winford Dale Richardson, 77, Bernice, died at 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at a Grove nursing home after a long illness.
Mr. Richardson was born March 3, 1919, at Pensacola, Okla.
He had been a Miami resident since 1949 and then moved to Bernice 15 years ago.
He was a retired B.F. Goodrich employee.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include a son, Rick Richardson, Jenks, Okla.; a daughter, Connie Kissee, Tulsa; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
