Martin Schmeling
GROVE, Okla. - Martin Arnold Schmeling, 75, Grove, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, at Grove General Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Schmeling was born Oct. 20, 1921, at Hoberg, Mo.
He was a hauler for Meadow Gold Milk Co. until 1957.
He then built water tanks.
He later worked for Afton Co-op and raised chickens until 1968.
He then served as a security guard for Port Duncan, in the Grand Lake area.
He married Mary Tipton on Feb. 9, 1944.
She died Sept. 1, 1984.
Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Joan Sandoval, Grove; two sisters, Opal Schaefer, Miami, and Lorene Mason, Fairland; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A daughter preceded him in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, with the Rev. Leo Schroeder officiating.
Graveside rites will be at the funeral home because of cold weather.
Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Grove.
Garland Miller
MIAMI, Okla. - Garland "Red" Miller, 65, 308 Fourth St. N.W., died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Baptist Regional Health Center after an illness.
Mr. Miller was born March 23, 1931, at Ketchum.
He lived the last 46 years in Miami, moving from Vinita.
He had worked 30 years at B.F. Goodrich, Miami.
He was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church, Miami.
He married Joyce Fisher on April 15, 1950, at Vinita. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rick Miller, Norman, and Randy Miller, Oklahoma City; a daughter, Joy Crow, Quapaw; a brother, Troy Miller, Tulsa; two sisters, Wilma Giles, Vinita, and Leta Mae Masters, Claremore; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
John Rice
WELCH, Okla. - John Jake Rice, 76, rural Welch, died at 9:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Rice was born Oct. 9, 1920, at Miles.
He lived in the Welch area most of his life.
He was a retired farmer and rancher.
He attended the Christian Church in Welch.
He married Roberta McClure on Oct. 9, 1940, in Welch.
She survives.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Juanita Hilliard, Welch; a sister, Lois Polly, Vinita; a brother, Bill Rice, Vinita; and a grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Thomas Funeral Home, Welch.
Brad Canham, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be in Welch Cemetery, west of Welch.
Pallbearers will be Leon Fansler, Bill Fansler, Gary Clark, Jake Clark, Donnie Clark, and Garry Chaney.
Charles Surridge
MIAMI, Okla. - Services for Charles Owen Surridge, 80, 11410 S. 587 Road, who died Saturday, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
The Rev. Carl Pollard and the Rev. Dewey Johnston will officiate.
Burial will be in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Charles Pyle, George Welch, Butch Mangold, Fred James, Ralph McKinley and Mark Jones.
Helen van Uden
MIAMI, Okla. - Graveside services for Helen van Uden, 83, 729 L St., N.W., who died Friday, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Howard Cemetery, Turkey Ford community, south of Wyandotte.
Earl Lewis, pastor, will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
Barbara Wellman
GROVE, Okla. - Barbara Rice Wellman, 63, Grove, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Wellman was born Sept. 12, 1933, at Grove.
She was a divisional sales manager for May Co., at El Cajon, Calif., retiring and returning in 1984 to Grove.
She was a member of First Christian Church, El Cajon.
She married James I. Wellman Sr. on April 8, 1950, at Tulsa.
He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James I. Wellman Jr., Nashville, Tenn., and Wayne C. Wellman, San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Curtis Rice, Nauvoo, Ala.; and five sisters, Delores Phelps, Hood River, Ore., Margaret Landrum and Jean DuBois, both of Grove, Ruby Price, Miami, and Janice Shero, Mapleton, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove.
Marvin Tunnell, minister, will officiate.
Burial will be in Buzzard Cemetery, Grove.
There will be no graveside services because of inclement weather.
Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
James Williams
PICHER, Okla. - James Leonard Williams, 73, formerly of 427 S. Emily St., died at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at a Picher nursing home after a long illness.
Mr. Williams was born May 30, 1923, at Picher and was a lifetime resident.
He was a Pentecostal.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenlawn Cemetery, northwest of Treece, Kan.
The Rev. Clyde Stilley will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher.
