HUMBLE, TEXAS – Funeral services for Thomas Vincent Dobbins, the brother of a Maud resident, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. Services will also be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Maud. Interment is to follow at Cummings Cemetery under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Home. Dobbins died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 in Humble at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife, Frances Dobbins; one daughter, Sally Jane Kelton; and one brother, Homer Dobbins of Maud. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
E.P. Krausse
Funeral services for former Bowlegs principal E.P. Krausse are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Holdenville. John Krausse is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Wetumka City Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Krausse died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 99. He was born March 20, 1902 in Zschedkwitz, Germany, near Altneburg, to Paul Frederick and Emma “Schmutzler” Krausse. He was raised in the Douglass area and attended school at Douglass where he graduated from high school in 1920. Krausse attended college at Oklahoma A&M where he graduated from in 1926 and was lated commissioned into the ROTC in 1926 as well. He married Edna Morrison on July 30, 1926 in Okemah. He was employed with Wetumka Ford Garage in the parts department. Krausse was director of numerous Educational CC Camps in Colorado and New Mexico for several years. He came back to Wetumka in the early 1940’s and homesteaded east of Wetumka where he farmed and taught at Fairview until 1950. He then taught at Dustin School from 1950 until 1955 and served as Bowlegs Grade School principal from 1955 until 1967. Krausse then moved to Kansas for three years and then in 1972 came back to Holdenville and served as a custodian at Thomas Elementary School for 20 years until 1996. He then moved to Yukon where he lived until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife. Krausse is survived by two sons, Gerald Krausse of Canadian and Allen Krausse of Shawnee; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers include Ray Shorman, Chad Donaldson, David Krausse, Brian Krausse, Erich Krausse and Fred Alvarado.
C. Lee Nelson
MAUMEE, OHIO – Funeral services for Wewoka native C. Lee Nelson are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at a later date in Wewoka. Services are under the direction of Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary. Nelson died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 in Medical College of Ohio at the age of 68. He was born Jan. 1, 1934 in Wewoka to Roy and Jewell Nelson. He was a 1952 graduate of Wewoka where he lettered in football, baseball, track. Nelson also wrestled. He continued his football career while attending Tulsa University and East Central State. He also attended the Institute for Organizational Management at the University of Huston and the Industrial Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma. Nelson was presented the Key Man Award by the Hugo Jaycees and was a member of the Economic Development Commission in Oklahoma. In 1961, he was honored as one of 40 men picked from throughout the country to attend the first industrial development institute. His working career began in Hugo where he manager of the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce. Nelson was also general manager of Industrial Development, Inc., a division of Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce in Texas. He then served as executive vice president of the Orange, Texas Chamber of Commerce, as well in Odessa, Texas. His first position with Owens, Illinois in Toledo was as manager of public affairs-forest products division, which was then followed by regional director of public affairs. As Nelson advanced in the company, he was named director of public affairs, administrative assistant to the executive office and retired as vice-president and director of public affairs. He was a member of the Social Lodge #217 F&AM in Lena, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Toldeo, Zenobia Temple and the Temple Guard, and Royal Order of Jesters Toledo Court #21. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, where he served, at the age of 25 in Hugo, as the youngest Exalted Ruler of any lodge in the United States. Nelson was also a member of BPOE #53 and National Order of Turtles, Pond #1, in Toledo. He also was a member of the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce, the Public Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States and the National Society of State Legislators and the Government Relations Committee of the Glass Packaging Institute. He previously served on the Board of the Toledo Mud Hens and was vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of Medical College of Ohio and Chairman of its hospital committee. Nelson was also a past president of the Toledo Press Club. He was listed in the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce publication, “Outstanding Young Men in America.” He also he been listed in “Outstanding Personalities in the South,” “Outstanding Texas,” “Personalities of the West and Midwest,” and was named “Outstanding Young Man of 1965” by the Orange Junior Chamber of Commerce. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Carol Lee Gilmore Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Janet Castillo, Brent Nelson and Cindy Hill; sisters, Helen McLain and Juanita Brand; one brother, Virgil Nelson; step-children, Debra Calevro, Keith Widener and Kevin Widener; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks Scholarship Fund, or Shriner’s Children’s Burn Unit.
Mary Malone
LINDSAY – Funeral services for Seminole native Mary Sunshine Malone are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Erin Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Troy Taylor is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of B.G. Boydston Funeral Home. Malone died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 in Grace Living Center at the age of 87. Malone was born Aug. 12, 1914 to Thomas Gaines and Ezra V. Wilson Lemmings. She married Henry Malone on March 13, 1939 in Seminole. She was a member of the Erin Springs Baptist Church. Malone is survived by her husband of the home; one daughter, Patricia A. Kirkpatrick of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Velma McCants of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Pallberaers are Brownie Drennan, Jack Ince, Kevin Beam, Mickey Hines, Randal Dutton and Hubert Everett. Honorary pallbearers are to be her grandsons, Danny Kirkpatrick and Randy Kirkpatrick, and nephews, Gerald Malone, Gary Malone, David Malone and Johnny Malone Jr.
Opal M. Cravens
KONAWA – Graveside funeral services for former Konawa resident Opal M. Cravens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Konawa City Cemetery. Rev. Ben Manis is set to officiate. He is to be assisted by Rev. Wayne Thompson. Services are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Cravens died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 at Southpark Health Care Center in Oklahoma City after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 87. She was born July 7, 1914 in Konawa to John and Mary Alice (James) Morrison. Cravens married R.C. “Nig” Cravens on Dec. 23, 1933 in Konawa. She helped her husband run a service station in Konawa for 35 years. After her husband’s death, she went to work at the local drug store in Konawa. Cravens was also a homemaker. She was a longtime member of the Nazarene Church in Konawa and was a member of the Konawa Home Demonstration Club for over 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on May 4, 1967; five sisters, Maudie, Cora, Oma, Geneva and Emma; and two brothers, John and Bert Morrison. Cravens is survived by two sons, Dean Cravens and Bob Cravens, both of Oklahoma City; one sister, Gladys Langford; and four grandchildren.
Dr. Kenneth Cherry
SHAWNEE – Funeral services for Dr. Kenneth A. Cherry, the father of a Seminole resident, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Funeral Home. Chaplain Herry Smith was set to officiate. Burial was to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home. Cherry died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 at his home at the age of 69. He was born Sept. 13, 1932 in Detroit, Mich. to Cecil and Virginia (Fike) Cherry. He attended high school in Michigan and later graduated from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. Cherry was a Doctor of Chiropractics for 30 years in Oklahoma. He married Jane Hood in 1960 in Las Vegas. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Korean service ribbon, United Nations services medal, National Defense service medal, Merit Unit Commendation and the Korean service ribbon with two bronze service stars. Cherry was a member of the Joint Chiropractic Association of Oklahoma, State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and the Federation of Licensing Board of Chiropractic. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Cherry. He is survived by his wife of Shawnee; four children, Kenneth Cherry Jr. of Arizona, Susan Scott of Seminole, Charles Cherry of Boley, and Jeffrey Cherry of Ft. Gibson; and eight grandchildren.
Jane Burkhart Morrow
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Jane Burkhart Morrow are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Ocker Memorial Chapel, 700 Jefferson, Van Buren, Ark. Burial will follow at Shamrock Cemetery near Cove City, Ark., under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Morrow died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in an Arkansas hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Seminole, to Oather James "OJ" and Alpha Lorene (Vaughn) Burkhart. She attended Seminole County schools before moving to Arkansas. She was a former licensed practical nurse and a homemaker, as well as a longtime member of Shamrock Community Church. She married Gary Morrow 33 years ago; he survives her of the home in Cedarville. She is also survived by one daughter, Lynn Shelly, Cedarville; one son, Gary Morrow II, Natural Dam, Ark.; three sisters, Sue Perryman, Shawnee, Louise Burkhart, Cedarville, and Rita Grisham, Seminole; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Bryan and Lucy Jane Shelly, all of Cedarville. Morrow was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Pallbearers will include Ronny Jordan, Roger Jordan, Mark Kattich, Greg Shelly, Brandon Shelly and Gary Morton II.
Eva Lee Moncrief
KONAWA – Graveside funeral services for former Konawa resident Eva Lee Moncrief are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Father Matthew Brown, O.S.B., is set to officiate. Services are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Moncrief died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 in Tulsa at the age of 87. She was born May 21, 1914 in Ada to Ned and Grace Johnson. She was a 1933 graduate of Konawa High School. Moncrief bought and sold antiques. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by three sons, Michael Moncrief and David Moncrief, both of Tulsa, and Stephen Moncrief of Hawaii; one sister, Madge McAnally of Konawa; and two granddaughters.
Albert Gentry
HOUSTON, TEXAS – Funeral services for Albert Gentry, the brother of a Seminole resident, were scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Long Point Baptist Church. Burial was to follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories. Gentry died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at the age of 92. He was born July 30, 1909 in Nelson to Samuel Jackson and Mery Etta Gentry. He married Laidene Allen on May 18, 1939 in Shawnee. Gentry was employed for 25 years with Gulf Oil Corporation in Oklahoma, Indiana, and Illinois. He and his wife moved to Houston following his retirement. He was an employee of Wagner Hardware there for 10 years. Gentry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lela McMullin and Betty Linn; and six brothers, Leonard Gentry, Oscar Gentry, Roy Gentry, Clinton Gentry, Clyde Gentry and Howard Gentry. He is survived by two daughters, Geneva June Gentry of Houston, Texas and Arlene Varner of Sugar Land, Texas; three sisters, Ruby Winn of Seminole, Velma Crews of Chandler, and Bessie Kidwell of Napa, Calif. Memorial donations may be made to Long Point Baptist Church, or any Meals-on-Wheels or Food Bank Program.
Velva Opal Griffin
Graveside funeral services for former Seminole resident Velva Opal Griffin are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Griffin died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 88. She was born Feb. 18, 1913 in Baldknob, Ark. to William and Sarah Meredith. She married Howard Edward Griffin in Baldknob, Ark. Griffin was a home provider for the elderly and took care of over 50 foster children. She attended Penn West Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents. Griffin is survived by her stepmother, Blanchie Gist of Ft. Smith, Ark.; her husband of the home; one son, Marvin Griffin of Seminole; two daughters, LaJuana DeLoach of Seminole and Anita Williamson of Holdenville; one sister, Juanita Wallace of Baldknob, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. Honorary bearers are Dennis Beckett, Gary Griffin, Roy Griffin, Kevin Griffin, Mike Arthur, and Tim Miner.
Wesley ‘Banks’ Lankford
Funeral services for Seminole resident Wesley A. “Banks” Lankford are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Doyle Long is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Lankford died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at his home at the age of 75. He was born Oct. 30, 1926 in Beggs to William Wesley and Mamie (Haworth) Lankford. He married Grace (McKee) on Feb. 26, 1949 in Seminole. Lankford was a retired truck driver for Austin Drilling Co. He was a member of Amazing Grace Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Arliss Lankford; one sister, Norma Jones; and one grandson, Johnathan Johnson. Lankford is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Gary Lankford of Seminole and Jeff Lankford of Earlsboro; two daughters, Vicki Johnson and Connie Winlock, both of Seminole; four brothers, Roy Lankford of Francis and Jerry Lankford, James Lankford, and Steve Lankford, all of Hobart; two sisters, Betty Jones of Arkansas and Wanda Rogers of Hobart; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are Jeremiah Case, Sherman Whitley, Gene McGinnis, Carl Seyfert, John Choate and A.P. “Sonny” Miller.
Estelle Sevilla Courtney
Estelle Sevilla Courtney moved to Oklahoma before it was Oklahoma. She died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at her home in Konawa at the age of 105. She moved to Mill Creek, Oklahoma at the age of 3, in 1899, from Georgia. “She remembers when Oklahoma became a state,” said her daughter, May Bell of Oklahoma City. “They moved to Konawa in 1911. “They had dirt streets and boards for the sidewalks. “They had wells but no running water,” Bell continued. “And they didn’t have a refrigerator so they used an ice box and blocks of ice to keep their food cold. “Her grandfather was a doctor and he would have to make house calls in the middle of the night during winter. “Her grandmother would line his coat with newspapers for a windbreaker and heat bricks to put in the floor board of his horse-drawn buggy,” she added. Courtney was born July 2, 1896 in Augusta, Ga. to John and Francis “Fannie” (Dye) Anderson. She married Homer Wade Courtney on April 25, 1920 in Konawa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1961. Courtney was a member of First United Methodist Church in Konawa, Eastern Star, Progressive Study Club, Charter Member of American Legion Auxiliary, and was the first president of the Band Mothers Club. “When she was 94, she got pulled over at 4 a.m. for going 35 in a 25,” her daughter said. “She told the police officer she president of the American Legion auxiliary and she going down there to cook breakfast for the veterans. “The policeman didn’t believe her so she told him to follow her down there. “They got and she got out her keys and unlocked the door and showed him the tables that were set up and invited him to come back for breakfast in a few hours.” She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband. She is survived by two sons, Edward Courtney of Del City and Milton Courtney of Konawa; two daughters, May Marie Bell of Oklahoma City and June Skaggs of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pickard Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Rev. Pam Shirk is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Konawa City Cemetery under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home.
Pearl Endwright
Funeral services for Maud resident Pearl Endwright are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Burial is to follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home. Endwright died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 88. She was born Aug. 16, 1913 in Tunnelton, Ind. to Archer and Goldie Mae (True) Green. She married Earl M. Endwright on March 31, 1934 in Paoli, Ind. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1992. Endwright was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren and her husband. She is survived by one son, Robert Endwright of Maud; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
