Funeral services for former Seminole resident Rebecca Ann (Welch) Dunn were held Friday in her hometown of Goodsprings, Ala. Dunndied Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at the age of 62. She was born Aug. 27, 1941 in Yukon to Rev. Hubert and Fern Welch. She grew up on a farm north of Seminole and attended Strother High School. She graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1959. Dunn attended Seminole Junior College in the fall of 1959. She moved to Miracle Valley, Ariz. in January of 1960. She had retired as a high school teacher several years ago. Dunn was preceded in death by her father, Hubert Welch. She is survived by her husband, Bud Dunn; two children, Deborah Shelton of Fairbanks, Ala., and Timothy Dunn of Tyler, Texas; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Melodie Fulmer and Carol Christensen; and six brothers, Butch, Buddy, Dick, Don, Mick, and Dean Welch.
Hattie Orr
CHICKASHA – Funeral services for former Seminole teacher Hattie B. Orr were scheduled for this morning at First Presbyterian Church of Chickasha. Rev. Barbara Hunt and Rev. Larry Hatfield were to officiate. Interment was to follow at Martha Cemetery north of Altus under the direction of McRay Funeral Home. Orr died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 in Chickasha at the age of 92. She was born Jan. 17, 1910 in Altus to Frances Elmer and Cora Alice Munsell Barrett. She graduated high school in Altus in 1927. In 1931, Orr graduated from the University of Oklahoma and later received her masters in 1950. Orr married Joseph Everett Orr on March 27, 1937 in Ardmore. She taught school in Tulsa Union Consolidated Schools, Waurika, and Seminole. She also taught third grade at the University of Oklahoma Laboratory School. During Orr’s career in teaching, she also taught on the college level at the University of Oklahoma. In 1965, she began teaching at the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts, now USAO. She retired in 1974. Orr was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and attended the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the Chickasha Literacy Council, Grady Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; two sisters; and her husband on Sept. 21, 1981. Orr is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Wewerka of Carraroe, Co. Galway, Ireland and Marjorie Beck of Eugene Ore.; two grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Eunice Holt
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Eunice (Love) George Holt are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Rev. Allen Wood is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Holt died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at her home in Texas at the age of 83. She was born Jan. 10, 1919 in Baldknob, Ark. to Merle and Nancy (Collier) Love. She married Allan J. Holt on July 14, 1972 in Wolf. He preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1993. Holt was a retired psychiatric tech. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Allan J. Holt. She is survived by her sons, Les George, Allen George, Charles George, and Larry George; two daughters, Opal Hilton and Colleen Hobbs; one sister, Birdie Starr; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ruth (Kerr) Parrish
MAUD - Graveside funeral services for Ruth (Kerr) Parrish are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Cummings Cemetery. Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate; burial will be under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home. Parrish died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Valley View Hospital, Ada. She was 79 years old. She was born May 12, 1923, in Ada, to Robert Terry and Ollie V. (Hill) Kerr. She was a former Maud resident and a homemaker. She was a registered nurse, working at hospitals in Ardmore and Holdenville before her retirement in 1984. She was of the Baptist faith. She married Leroy J. Parrish on June 6, 1956, in Shawnee; he died Feb. 13, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, and one son, Jay Scott, in 1957. Survivors include one daughter, Carole VanMeter, Ada; one sister, Helen Roy, Georgetown, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Karan Ann Douthit
Funeral services for Karan Ann (Higdon) Douthit are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swearingen Chapel. Rev. David Karges of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Wolf Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Douthit died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 50. She was born Feb. 1, 1952, in Pauls Valley to George Kenneth and Jennie Lee (Rounseville) Higdon. She moved to Seminole from Mayesville at the age of five. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1970 and later from Seminole State College. She worked at Bowlegs Public Schools for several years and was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. She married Robert L. Douthit Sr. on June 7, 1974, at First United Methodist Church; he survives her, of the home. Other survivors include her parents, George and Jennie Higdon of Seminole; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Misty Douthit and Robert L. and Kara Douthit, all of Seminole; and one daughter, Deana Douthit, of the home; two brothers, Kenneth Higdon, Yukon, and Keith Higdon, Dallas; and two grandchildren, Tyler and Jaxon Douthit, both of Seminole. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Luther and Kate Higdon and Wayne and Elizabeth Powell, and her mother- and father-in-law, Truman and Leta Douthit. Pallbearers will include Wayne Madron, George David Higdon, Bobby Armstrong, Barry Armstrong, Keith Douthit and Gary Douthit. Honorary casketbearers include Matt Anson and David Moore.
Keith Cotton
Funeral services for Keith Andrew Cotton are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Father Basil Keenan, O.S.B. is set to officiate. Burial is to follow at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. A Catholic rosary is planned for 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Cotton died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 in Oklahoma City at the age of 36. He was born June 4, 1966 in Superior, Wis. To Cary Paul and Patricia Emily (Demeyer) Cotton. He was employed at Wilson Equipment. He formerly worked on pulling units in Seminole area oil fields. Cotton was of the Catholic faith. He coached Little League baseball. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1984 where he active in sports. Cotton attended Seminole State College several years ago. He was also a Police Explorer Cadet. He was preceded in death by his father on Dec. 22, 1996. Cotton is survived by his mother of Seminole and one brother, Brian Cotton of Lake City, Fla.
Mary Ames
Funeral services for life long Seminole resident Mary Lois Ames will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Free Will Baptist Church of Seminole. Ames died April 9, 2003 at the age of 77 in Midwest City Nursing Center. She was born April 16, 1925 in Bokchito, Oklahoma. She married Virl Ames on June 29, 1940 in Bokchito. She was a member of Free Will Baptist Church, a homemaker, and enjoyed baking, quilting and loved being a grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virl Ames; son, Lee Ames; and two sisters. Services will be officiated by Rev. David McDougal. Interment will follow to Maple Grove Cemetery under the direc tion of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
John Leo Brockhaus
Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident, John Leo Brockhaus are set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Shawnee. Brockhaus died April 7, 2003, at the age of 77 in the Ambassador Manor Nursing Home in Tulsa. He was born on April 19, 1925 in Yukon Oklahoma to Franklin Brockhaus and Magdalena (Walch) Brockhaus. He married Anna J. (Bryant) on April 23, 1948 in Midwest City. He was a farmer, rancher, and worked for Lee Way Freightliner. He was of Catholic faith. His parents, his wife, two brothers, Lawrence and Paul Brockhaus; and two sisters, Mary Matthews and Clara Cawthon preceded him in death. He is survived by three sons, and daughter-in-laws, Paul and Sherry Brockhaus of Tulsa, Lee and Sissy Brockhauss of Earlsboro, and Mike Brockhaus of Choctaw; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay Carter and Woody Woodward of Yuma, Ariz.; five grand children, J.R., Angelique and Bryan Joe Brockhaus, Allen Roads, Ann Jeanette Casad; seven great-grandchildren, Taylor and Justine Roads, Barrit and Bailey Casad, Caitlin and J.T. Brockhaus and Landen Degman. One sister, Elinor Hubbs of Enid, a lifelong friend, Dave Pratt of Hurst, Texas, and an extended family friend, Patsy Cline of Prague, also survive him. There will be a Rosary on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. His body will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee on April 11 under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Ray Dickover
Graveside services for Ray Warren Dickover of Earlsboro have been set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the BrownCemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh. Dickover died April 4, 2003 in Tulsa, at the age of 86. He was born April 27 1916 to Walter S. and Mary A. (Faught) Dickover. He lived on his family’s farm in the Choctaw area for many years. He had resided in Earlsboro for the past 20 years. He was a farmer most of his life and lived on the family farm to care for his mother after his father’s death. His parents, two sisters, Eva Ruckman and Elma Haley; and two brothers, Everett and Leonard Dickover preceded him in death. He is survived by his nieces and nephews and their families. The service will be officiated by Rev. Lee Wayne Fowler.
Carl Cox
Funeral services for a Wewoka resident, Carl Delbert Cox, are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Wewoka. Officiating the service is Johnny Hinton, being assisted by Mark Cox and Tony Cox. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. Cox passed away April 4, 2003, at the age of 91. He was born on March 31, 1912 in Hugo to Samuel E. and Mary Lou Tisha Cox. Cox lived and attended school in Tulsa and moved to Wewoka in 1926 where married Mabel Harris on June 14, 1933. He was an automobile dealer in Wewoka for 50 years. and was in the real estate business for 20 years. He was also an active member of the Wewoka Church of Christ. He was extremely proud of his grand children and great- grandchildren. On his death bed he talked of how blessed he was that all his children and grandchildren loved and served the lord. He is survived by three sons, Jim and wife Shirley Cox, Joe and wife Dorothy Cox and Johnny and wife Carolyn Cox; one daughter, Jane and husband James Buchanan; ten grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Mabel Harris Cox in 1992 and one daughter, Joan, in 1937. Pallbearers will be Keith Cox, Mark Cox, Kent Cox, Kirk Cox, Tony Cox, Mike Cox, Jeff Cox, and Jeffrey Wood. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Cox, Clint Cox, Jeremy Cox, James Buchanan, Jeff Wood, Roy Dickie, Tracy Bush, Jon Echols, Rowdy Kincade, Troy Ward and Ernest Moore.
Donald Cline
Funeral Services for Donald Abraham Cline of Seminole have been scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Cline died on April 1, 2003, at the age of 78 in Norman Regional Hospital. He was born on June 12, 1924 to Don Cline and Twyla (Fry) Cline in Oilton but lived most of his life in Seminole. He was married to Nadine Bell on June 12, 1960 in San Antonio, Texas. He was retired from the U.S. Army and was a member of the Tri-City Christian Center and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James Cline and one sister, Evelyn Hester. He is survived by his wife, Nadine of the home, three sons, Ronald Lynton of Alvin, Texas, Chester Lynton of Clovis, N.M. and Michael Barrett of Seminole; one brother, Jackie Cline of Seminole; one sister, Betty Hester of Seminole; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The services will be officiated by Rev. Floyd Tate. Interment will follow to the Little Cemetery under the direc tion of Swearingen Funeral Home.
George Davis
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole resident Dr. George Henry Davis are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Davis Karges will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Dr. Davis passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 86. He was born to George H. Davis Sr., and Minta Kelley (Mills) Davis in Forney, Texas on March 25, 1917. George married Marjorie Claudia (Chambers) Davis on June 23, 1941 in Carmi, Ill. Dr. Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Tech Third Grade with the Medical Detachment in the 274th Infantry during World War II. He was a longtime Seminole Medical Doctor, who, along with Dr. Julian Wood, operated the Pace-Chambers Clinic for many years. George was a Mason, an Elk, a member of the American Legion, and a life member of the Shawnee Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by one son, Claude Starr Davis; two brothers, Paul Wallace Kelley and Patrick Howard Kelley; and his parents. George is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of the home; one son, George Starr Davis, Shawnee; one daughter, Annelt Davis Allen, Seminole; three brothers, John Kelley, Hartville, Ark., Albert Kelley, Phoenix, Ariz., and David Kelley, Seminole; three sisters, Leila Bennett, Phoenix, Ariz., Irene Lockhart, Tulsa, and Alice Tregla, Sunnyville, Calif.; two grandchildren, Djuana Davis and Ginger Swaim; and one great-grandchild, Brooklin Hilton. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Julian Wood, Joe Scott, David Henley, Howard Allen, and Keith Swaim.
Jessie Cooper
Funeral services for Seminole native Jessie Mae (Blackburn) are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kentucky Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Shawnee, under the direction of Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary of Oklahoma City. Cooperdied Monday, March 31, 2003. She was born to Thomas Jefferson Blackburn and Gertrude Florence (Fry) Blackburn on June 23, 1914 in Seminole. Coopermarried Roscoe Cooper in Shawnee on Dec. 23, 1933. The couple lived in Dale and New Mexico prior to moving to Oklahoma City during World War II. She was a member of the Kentucky Ave. Baptist Church, and was active in the church programs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Leonard Blackburn; one sister, Mayme Marrs; and one nephew, Orean Marrs. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Workman; and one granddaughter.
Nancy Mae Carbitcher
Gone is a loving mother, dear grandmother, and a wonderful friend, a quiet lady who helped many, never asking for anything in return. A leader of her family with a kind and gentle nature, softspoken with a loving smile that will be greatly missed in the lives of those that knew and loved her. Lifelong Seminole County resident Nancy Mae Deere Carbitcher, 68, will be laid to rest on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. She was brought back to her home southeast of Bowlegs at 5 p.m. Sunday. An all-night vigil will be held Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m. Rev. Houston Tiger and Rev. Walley King will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Jimmie Carbitcher family cemetery under the direction of Stout Phillips Funeral Home with traditional speaker Dorsey Nero officiating. Nancy died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at her home in Bowlegs. She was born July 9, 1934 south of Holdenville to Thomas and Lucy (Harrison) Deere; they preceded her in death. In 1949, she married Jimmie (Ozvna) Carbitcher Jr., in Seminole; he preceded her in death. She worked throughout her life as a homemaker and quilter. She loved quilting, especially for her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and for anyone who would ask. Nancy also quilted traditional Seminole Patchwork quilts. Nancy was a member of Mekusukey Baptist Church where she would come to enjoy church songs, hymns, and gospel singing. She reared her children in the Bowlegs area in the tradition of the Seminole tribal methods. She lived the ways of the Seminoles, intermingling her life with that of the world around her. Nancy enjoyed attending stomp dances where she shook cans for many years. She followed the customs of the ancient Seminoles in the dances that were held. One of her favorite past times was playing with her grandchildren and following their school and extra-curricular activities. She enjoyed teaching them the Seminole language and customs of their ancestors. Nancy will follow the Seminole tribal custom through her funeral services and burial. Survivors include three sons and daughter-in-laws, Freeland “Rusty” and Shalah, Stroud, Jimpsey “Boggey” and Vicky, Garrett, Texas, Cooky “Toby,” of Seminole; seven daughters and son-in-laws, Pat Larney, Shawnee, Betty Jean “Tina” and Gene Wahweah, El Reno, Dora Mae “Tootsie” and Dave “Roman” Hill, Serena “Doedo” and Dewayne Scott, Nettie “B-girl” and David W. Haney Sr., Lisa Billie of Seminole, and Marina “Tolley” Brown of Wewoka. Nancy left behind 38 grandchildren, Sean and Hayga Chalepah of Vamossa, Shirlene and Donny Cofer, Katie “Lusty” Phillips, Sally “Tooter” Wind and Jason Brauning, Michael “Boysee” Hill and Raney Fixico, Jack Hill, Isaac Hill, Davy “Buffalo” Hill, Natasha “Toshie” Hill, Kristy Hill, Buddy and Tia Harjo, Vanessa “Sissy Boo” Henneha and J.B. Carbitcher has one great-great- grandchild. Other survivors include three sister-in-laws, Mary Jane Harjo, Bowlegs, Srophonia Brown, Seminole, and Bonnie Deere, Blythe, Calf.; one brother-in-law, Lewis Wise of Seminole; one uncle, Buster Deere of Seminole; a host of nieces and nephews, and special longtime friends: Edna Gourley of San Francisco, Calif., Dan and Lucille Reynolds of Seminole, as well as many, many others. Those who precede Nancy in death are husband Jimmie (Ozvna) Carbitcher Jr., Nov. 8, 1999 at the age of 69; two sons, Younger (Sonny) Carbitcher, Dec. 9, 2001 at the age of 33, and Monroe Carbitcher, Oct. 31, 1964 at the age of three; a toddler grandson, Frederick “B.J.” Brown, Nov. 6, 1979; 11 brothers, two sisters and her parents Thomas and Lucy Deere. Pallbearers include Dave R. Hill, Gene Wahweah, Dewayne Scott, J.C. Simpson and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Felix Mack, Raymond Harjo, Shannon Deere, Buddy Wood, Thomas Mack, Henry Yargee, family and friends.
