Graveside services for former Maud resident Florence Shreve are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Riverside Cemetery in McLoud. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole. Shreve died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at the Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Lexington at the age of 76. She was born to Rufus Hicks and Leona (Patton) Hicks on July 25, 1927 in McLoud. Shreve was a former resident of the Sunset Estates Nursing Center in Maud. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Billy Hicks on Aug. 5, 1998.
Eugene T. Miller
Eugene T. Miller went to be with our Lord on Oct. 2, 2003. He was born in Maud on May 7, 1935, the son of the late Charles Miller and Fannie Harjochee. Eugene graduated from Chiloco Indian School in 1953. He served in two branches of the Armed Forces; first serving in the United States Marine Corp for four years and receiving several outstanding medals. Eugene received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (First Award). While serving in the United States Navy, Eugene received several distinguished medals including the Vietnam Service Medal (3), Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and a Marksmanship Medal. Eugene retired with an Honorable discharge after serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy. In 1974, he received an Automotive Mechanics Certificate from Southwest Automotive School in Moore. In 1980, Eugene graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma. Eugene loved all types of sports, mainly being an avid fan of his alma mater, the Oklahoma Sooners. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club of Moore. Eugene enjoyed playing cards with his fellow veterans on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. He also had a great love for his two cats, Metchita and Asco. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister; and one brother. He is survived by eight sisters, Roxie Haynes, JoAnn Factor and Kitty Miller-Fawcett of Prague, Jeanette Postoak, Esther Miller-Fourkiller and Cindy Miller of Tulsa, Pinky Miller-Cole, Oklahoma City, and Arlis Miller-Banagas, Whittier, Calif.; two brothers, Reo Miller, Seminole and Dewayne Miller, Earlsboro; one uncle, Andrew Harjo; brothers-in-law Sonny Cole, Elmer Haynes, Sam Banagas, Justin Fawcett and Newman Factor; one sister-in-law, Linda Miller; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A wake service will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Randall Miller will officiate. Burial will take place at Little Cemetery, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Juanita Marson
Funeral services for Juanita Nora Marson, 78, Wewoka, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Hilltop Freewill Baptist Church in Wewoka. Burial follow in Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka. Marson was born on April 21, 1925, to Thedd and Nora Smith. She married Jimmie Marson on May 8, 1948, in Wewoka. The couple owned and operated Marson’s Grocery Superette in Wewoka for 9 years. After retiring from the grocery business, they enjoyed camping and fishing. Marson was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Jimmie, of the home; two sons, Ronnie Griffith, of Visalia, Calif., and Jimmy Don Marson, of the home; and two sisters, Geneva Kay, Wewoka, and Maryetta Davis, Visalia, Calif. Pallbearers will be Richard Dale Kay, Harry Joe Kay, Ronnie K. Griffith, Jim Fleming, Dewey Muirhead, and David Calvert.
Larry Harjo Sr.
Funeral services for former Seminole resident, Larry Ray Harjo Sr., of Shawnee, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 at Bird Creek Indian Baptist Church in Sasakwa with burial at Ishlum-Harjo Family Cemetery in Vamoosa. Officiating the service is Revs. Bunny Carpitcher, Joe Factor and Franklin Harjo. Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. He will be taken to the family home at 4 p.m. Oct. 1 with wake services to begin at 7:30 p.m. He will then be taken to Bird Creek Indian Baptist Church in Sasakwa at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 for all night wake services. He died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the age of 55 in Ada. He was born Dec. 3, 1947, in Konawa to Jamey and Anna Mae Harjo. Harjo attended schools in Seminole and Konawa and was formerly employed by Shawnee Glass as a glasscutter. He married Mary Larney Harjo on June 17, 1971, in Shawnee. He was a member of the Bird Creek Indian Baptist Church in Sasakwa. His parents preceded him in death. Harjo is survived by his wife, Mary Harjo of the home; three children, Larry Harjo Jr. of Tecumseh, Brian Harjo and Krystal Harjo, both of Shawnee; four grandchildren; one brother, Terry Harjo of Oklahoma City; one sister, Janice Johnico of Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of other relatives. Pallbearers will be Lydell Yellowfish, Randy Coody, Andrew Coody Jr., Willie Harjo, Thomas Lindsay and Ellis Little. Honorary bearers are Alvin Wing and Simon Larney.
Howard Nall
Funeral services for Seminole County resident, Howard Nall of Wewoka, are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Wewoka Church of Christ. Johnny Hinton will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. He died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at the age of 94, at the Wewoka Nursing Center. He was born Nov. 15, 1908, in Eufaula to Hugh Nall and Dora A. (Halk) Nall. His wife, Mildred preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2001, Nall was reared in Eufaula and attended schools there. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked in the oil fields and construction. He retired in 1974. Nall attended the Wewoka Church of Christ and was baptized in Sept. 1938. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Delta Lynn Nall, one son, Joe Phillip Nall; his parents; and his wife, Mildred. He is survived by one sister, Anna Weirick of Bakersfield, Calif. Pallbearers will be Larry Bailey, Brian Cain, Raymond Cain, Dewey Muirhead, Max
Smith and Ray Stafford. Honorary pallbearers are James Hart, Rowdy Kincade and David O’Donnell.
Otis ‘Mike’ Harrison
Memorial services for Seminole County resident, Otis Gene “Mike” Harrison are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Swearing Funeral Chapel, Seminole. Rev. Steve Cline will officiate the services under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole. He died Sunday, Sept 28, 2003, at the age of 74 at Seminole Medical Center. Harrison was born April 8, 1929, at Stonewall to Otis Harrison and Eliza Jane (Ellison) Harrison. He was married to Colleen Marie (Smith) Harrison April 4, 1953. He was retired as vice president of Coulter Steel Company in Emeryville, Calif., where he worked for 37 years. Harrison was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Merchant Marines. He served during the Korean conflict as Master Sergeant. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in California. His parents and one sister, Pathresa Newton, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Marie (Smith) Harrison; one son, Grady Harrison of Oakland, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Harrison of Noble and Trudy Harrison of LaPorte, Texas and one grandson. Virgle Moore
A Memorial service for Konawa native Virgle Leon Moore is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Guardian West Funeral Home Chapel in Oklahoma City. Moore died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003 at the age of 66 in Oklahoma City. He was born to Roscoe and Edna Moore on Sept. 24, 1936 in Konawa. Moore worked at Hoster Steel Mill in Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Moore; and one sister, Emma Jean Short. Moore is survived by two daughters, Teresa and Julie Moore; one son, Michael Moore; a brother, Sam Moore; two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Carolyn Martin; and two grandchildren.
Henry Shaffer
Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident, Henry Shaffer, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at the Bowlegs First Baptist Church with Randy McCown and Glen Pence officiating. Interment will follow at the Woodland Memorial Park in Sand Springs under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole. He died Sept. 25, 2003, at the age of 97 at his home in Seminole. He was born Nov. 14, 1905, in Shawnee to James Shaffer and Artelia (Whittington) Shaffer. He married Ruby Shaffer on Feb. 14, 1930, who preceded him in death in 1974. He moved to Seminole from Sand Springs 79 years ago. He later married Estelle Shafer who preceded him in death Dec. 12, 2001. He worked in the oilfield for Pure Oil Company and was a member of Bowlets First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives, Ruby Shaffer and Estelle (McCown) Shaffer; and one brother, George Shaffer. He is survived by one stepson, Mike McCown of Tulsa; two step daughters, Glenda Lay of Bowlegs and Barbara Chaffin of Broken Arrow; one brother, Pete Shaffer of Sand Springs; one sister, Dorothy Johnson of McAlester; 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers are Bob Davis, Jack Statch, Dean Debter, Slim Crabtree, Leo Stephens, Clint Yancey and Chuck Anderson.
Mary Rippy
Graveside services for Seminole County resident, Mary Gertrude (LaValley) Rippy are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Wetumka Cemetery in Wetumka. Officiating the service will be Rev. Frank Moppin. Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. She went to be with Jesus Sept. 24, 2003, at the age of 89 at her home in Wewoka, where she had lived for the past 30 years. She was born Oct. 5, 1913 to Conley and Rosa (Winters) LaValley in Wetumka where she was also reared. She married Roy Rippy on Sept. 30, 1933 in Wetumka. She worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, building ships in Richmond, Calif. She was a homemaker who had all the survival skills that the 1930s’ depression forged. She made lye soap, canned and dried foods, made quilts and clothes, picked cotton and washed on a rub board. She would routinely walk six miles to Wetumka for groceries. Mary’s husband, Roy, lost his arm in an accident, but she was always by his side. He was killed in an explosion in Yukon on Dec. 23, 1952, leaving Mary, at the age of 36, to walk the road alone. She was very proud of her Creek heritage. Her mother had been allotted land. She attended the Spring Baptist Church in Sasakwa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Conley and Rosa (Winters) LaValley; her husband, Roy Rippy; two brothers, William Solomon (Bud) LaValley and Clyde Lawton LaValley; and two sisters, Lottie Eula Harris and Rosa Irene Wheeler. She is survived by three daughters, Connie and Vern Davis of Joplin, Mo., Ramona and Andy Anderson of Oklahoma City, and Naoma Lisenbee of Wewoka; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Cora Grooms
Funeral services for long time Seminole County resident, Cora Elizabeth Grooms of Maud, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Maud. Revs. Carl Whitfield and Wayne Taylor, along with Bobby Woods, will officiate. Visitation will be at the Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home on Saturday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Monday until service. Interment will follow at the Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of the Knight Swearingen Funeral Home of Maud. She died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at the age of 95 at her home in Maud. She was born Aug. 26, 1908, in Big Sands, Texas, to Clarence Pittman and Nancy Jane (Ford) Pittman. She was married to Steven Lonzo Grooms on Feb. 3, 1924, in Palestine, Texas. He preceded her in death. Grooms devoted her life to raising her family, worked in many of the Maud Care’s, and also worked for several years at Pottawatomie County Dist. 3 County Barn in Maud. Even after she retired, she worked at the Maud Tigers Den Carfe. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maud. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence, in 1965; three sons, Jack, Joe and George Grooms; one daughter, Beatrice Smiley and several grandchildren. She is survived by 7 daughters and son-in-laws, Don and Joyce Stackhouse Brann, Lloyd and Glenda Bowers, Gary and Virginia McKlaskey, Bob and Francis McCarty, all of Maud, Paul and Jeanne Rowley of Ardmore, Louise Kelley of Oklahoma City, Bobby and Bobbie Woods of Newnan, Ga.; one sister, Mary Louise Arrington of Gilmer, Texas; 46 grandchildren, 90 great grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren. Casket bearers are great grandsons, Josh Edlridge, Tommy Kelley, Jeremy Woods, Dane Wood, Robby McCarty, Jacob Goodnight, Dustin Goodnight and Matt Lowe. Jeffrey Beggs
Graveside funeral services for Jeffrey Lee Beggs, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept, 26, 2003, at Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka with Anthony Wood officiating, under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. Beggs died on Sunday, September 21, 2003, at the age of 43 at Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on May 30, 1960, in Laguna Beach, California to Don and Ginger Henderson Beggs. He attended school at Douglas Schools at in Oklahoma City. and was reared in the Oklahoma City area. He has lived in the Jacksonville, Florida since 1992, where he was a carpenter and cabinet maker. Beggs was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by, two sisters Donna Beggs Robertson, Gigi Beggs Martin both of Wewoka, one niece Heather Robertson of Wewoka, and special friend Celeste Sweet of Jacksonville, Florida and other relatives and friends.
Louisa Billie
Funeral services for Seminole County native Louisa Harjo Billie are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church, south of Wewoka. Revs. Houston Tiger and Sandy Harjo will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. Billie died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at the age of 79. She was born to Sundae Harjo and Velma Cosar Harjo on Aug. 24, 1924. Billie attended Limestone School and also lived in and around Seminole County until 1997 when she moved to Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph Billie; three sisters, Abbie Harjo, Imogene Harjo and Fannie Harjo; one son-in-law, Daniel Starr; one daughter-in-law, Sally Wolf; and four grandchildren, Bradley Billie, Eastman Billie, infant grandaughter, and Yvett Hulbutta. Billie is survived by one daughter, Nell Starr and her children, Terry, Michael, Laquita, and David Starr, all of Wewoka; three sons, George Hulbutta and his son Allen, both of Seminole, Lee Moses and his children, Lee, Otis, and Crystal Moses, all of Tulsa, and John Billie of Cushing and his children, John of Henryetta, Joseph of Alabama, Lawanna of Meeker, Stina of Oklahoma City, and Alisha of Germany; one sister, Naomi Jacobs, Oklahoma City; three brothers, Richmond Harjo, Seminole, and John Harjo and Luther Harjo, both of Tulsa; and 27 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Grey Tiger, Jimmy Tiger, Benny Tiger, Jason Tiger, Joe Jacobs and Oscar Bunner. Honorary bearers will be Billie’s grandsons.
Alma Campbell
Funeral services for former Seminole County resident, Alma Campbell are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 at the Asher First Baptist. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. Interment will follow at the Cummings Cemetery under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home, Maud. She died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2003, at the age of 99 at Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born Aug. 24, 1904, in Pope County, Ark. to Henry Sartors and Dora Mae (Bagwell) Sartors. She was married to John M. Campbell, who preceded her in death. She was a former Maud, Asher and Tecumseh resident. She was a member of Asher First Baptist Church and had been active with the Asher Senior Citizens as well as being an avid quilter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Mona Ruth; and three sons, Ronald, Ralph and Hoyt Campbell. She is survived by two sons, Jerry Campbell and wife, Betty of King, N.C. and Max Campbell and wife, Bonnie of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, R.G. Sartors and wife, Velma of Holdenville; one sister, Wilma Bratcher and husband, Russell of Tecumseh, as well as several nieces, nephews and other family members. Pallbearers are Tom Kennedy, Larry Moore, Larry Fore, Johnny Sorerells, Harold Farris and Henry Neeley. Honorary pallbearers are Jackie Smith, Russell Bratcher and Kenneth Gordon.
