Faye Burton

Graveside services for longtime Seminole resident, Faye Burton are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole. She died Sept. 24, 2003, at the age of 95 in Seminole Estates Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 12, 1908, in Hiawatha, Kan. to Loren Smith and Rachel (Kring) Smith. She grew up in Cushing but moved to Seminole 70 years ago. She was 16 years old when she went to work for C.R. Anthony. She was one of their first employees and worked as their bookkeeper. She was married to John Burton. She was a member of the First Christian Church and before her vision failed, she enjoyed fishing, reading, sports and playing duplicate bridge. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five sisters, Lennie, Rachel, Mae, Nancy Alice, and Velda; four brothers, Harry, Jack, Jim, and Boss. She is survived by one son, John King Burton of Seminole; two daughters, Jane Mears and husband, Gene of Buffalo, Texas and Nancy Hancock of Okmulgee; granddaughter, beth Stafford and husband, Tim of Okmulgee; seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lenora Buckner

Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Lenora Edwards Buckner of Wewoka, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at New Lima High Auditorium. Officiating pastor will be Rev. F.D. Cochran of Scipio Baptist Church, Lima. Interment will follow at Lima Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary, Wewoka. She died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at the age of 89 at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born May 4, 1914, in Lima to Joe and Easter Hunter. She received her education in Lima and lived in Seminole County all of her life. She became a member of Scipio Baptist Church at an early age, where she served as missionary president, member of Sunday school, member of the Women’s Auxillary and also of BTU. She was married to William F. Buckner who preceded her in death. She also had four children to preceed her in death and her sister, Ida Mae Johnson. She is survived by six sons, Lorenzo A. Edwards, Sammy Joe Edwards, Lawrence Kennety Edwards, Terry Loy Edwards all of Lima and Wallace J. Edwards and Kim Renado Edwards of Oklahoma City; and four daughters, Princella Ross, Rosetta Cravens and Senobia James, all of Oklahoma City and Carol Ann Morris of Omaha, Neb.; 25 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Lorenzo Edwards, Terry Edwards, Sammy Edwards, Kenneth Edwards, Wallace Edwards, Kim Edwards, Sherman Cravens and Ronnie James. Honorary pallbearers are Lorenzo Edwards Jr., Kenneth Edwards, Earnest Edwards, Mike Edwards, Terry Edwards II, Bryant Edwards, Roland W. James, Renado W. James, Sherad L. Cravens Derrick Ross and Steven L. Cravens.

Harry Amos Woods

Funeral services for former longtime Seminole County resident Harry Amos Woods, were scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Stout-Phillips Funeral Chapel in Wewoka. Rev. Meredith Robinson was to officiate. The VFW Post #1311 was set to perform the flag ceremony. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home. Woods died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at the age of 76. He was born to Howard and Cora Bell Dunaway Woods on March 8, 1927 in Okemah, and attended Bearden School. Woods enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Howard S. Woods Jr.; and one sister, Madeline L. Wainscott. Woods is survived by three nephews, George H. Wainscott, Nicoma Park, Wendell L. Wainscott, Oklahoma City, and Curtis E. Wainscott, Midwest City; and one niece, Jo Warren, Oklahoma City. Pallbearers will be the VFW Post #1311, Curtis Wainscott, and Wendell Wainscott.

Wisey Emarthle

Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Wisey Emarthle of Konawa, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Criswell Chapel in Ada. A wake service will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Criswell Funeral Home. Service will be officiated by Revs. Houston Tiger and John Shomo. Interment will follow at the Emarthle Family Cemetery. She died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at the age of 87 in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Konawa to Marcus Emarthle and Lucy Frank Emarthle. She was a lifelong resident of Konawa and attended school at Mekusukey Mission. She was a homemaker, a member of the Baptist Faith and attended Cold Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Eastman Harjo; three brothers, Barney Tiger, Alex Emarthle and Jimmy Emarthle; three sisters, Susie Emarthle, Eliza Johnson and Yannah Factor and two grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Emma Jean Harjo of Konawa, Geneva Douglas of Okemah and Lucy Tiger of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, Frank Harjo of Konawa, Dave Walters of Norman and Leroy King of Big Cypress, Fla.; three brothers, Homer Lee Emarthle and Johnny Emarthle, both of Konawa and Tommy Emarthle of Tulsa; 22 grandchildren, six whom she reared, Evette Yahola, Eunice Henson, Ricky Harjo, Cindy Hudson, David Harjo and Marcus Harjo; 22 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and many other relatives. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Alberson, Bruce Douglas, Marcus Harjo, Ricky Harjo, Michael Johnson and Jerome King. Honorary bearers are Harry Douglas, Walter Factor, Frank Johnson, Thomas Yahola, Edward Factor, Nelvin Hudson and Isaac Johnson.

Alma L. Taylor

Funeral services for Seminole County resident, Alma L. Taylor are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26 at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Shawnee. She died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at the age of 93. She was born Nov. 7, 1909, in Prague to William A. Adams and Grace Sanders Adams. She married Major. L. Taylor Feb 26, 1927, in Shawnee. She worked for 36 years as a sales clerk at Blaine’s in Shawnee. She was a member of South Rock Creek Baptist Church in Shawnee and enjoyed sewing and music. She is survived by four sons, Kenneth Taylor of Seminole, Don Taylor of Kingston, Theron Taylor of Oceola and Harold Taylor of Wyoucca Valley, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; and one sister Gene Adams of Midwest City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two children, W.A. Taylor and Beatrice Harris; and two sisters, Juanita Cash and Geniva Martin.

Kathryn Ellen Willingham

Funeral services for Kathryn Ellen Willingham, mother of Seminole residents Susan Duvall and Donald Willingham, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in El Reno. Frances Snodgrass will officiate the services. Interment will follow at the El Reno Cemetery, under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home. Willingham passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at the Seminole Estates Nursing Center at the age of 94. She was born to John Henry and Tennessee Angeline Bannister on March 6, 1909 in El Reno. Willingham graduated from El Reno High School in 1927, and attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha for a year. She married Thomas Hugh Willingham in 1927 and had seven children. Willingham was a long time member of the First Baptist Church, and taught Sunday School for many years in Seminole and El Reno. She worked for 26 years as the Register of Vital Statistics for Canadian County until 1994. Willingham was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Patti; a son, Thomas Hugh Jr.; and one brother, Ray. She is survived by three sons, Donald of Seminole, Roger of Chicago, Ill., and Ken of Plano, Texas; two daughters, Susan Duvall, Seminole and Rita Millspaugh of Oklahoma City; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild. Willingham

Jeffrey Beggs

Graveside services for Jeffrey Lee Beggs, brother of Seminole County residents, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka. Anthony Wood will officiate the service under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. Beggs died on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at the age of 43 at Jacksonville, Fla. He was born May 30, 1960, in Laguna Beach, Calif. to Don and Ginger Henderson Beggs. He was reared in Oklahoma City area and attended school at Douglas Schools in Oklahoma City. He lived in Jacksonville, Fla. since 1992, where he was a carpenter and cabinetmaker. Beggs was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two sisters, Donna Beggs Robertson and Gigi Beggs Martin, both of Wewoka; a special friend, Celeste Sweet of Jacksonville, Fla. and other relatives and friends.

Henry Shaffer

Funeral services for Seminole resident, Henry Shaffer are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Bowlegs First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Sand Springs. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole. He died Sept. 25, 2003, at the age of 97 at his home in Seminole. Full obituary information will follow.

Jack Baker

Funeral services for former Seminole resident, Jack Edward Baker of Oklahoma City, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with Ed. Foust officiating. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home, Shawnee. He died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at the age of 82 in an Oklahoma nursing Home. He was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Duncan to L.D. Baker and Mary (Duncan) Baker. On Oct. 11, 1941, he was married to Laurene Faylor in Seminole. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked in manufacturing for many years and retired from Tinker Air Force Base. He lived in the Shawnee – Seminole area most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laurene; one brother, Jim Baker and one sister, June Wolf. He is survived by one son, Jerry Edward Baker of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Donna Conner of Seminole; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren and one brother, L. D. Baker Jr. or Shawnee. The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer’s Association

Hazel Sligar

Graveside services for Seminole resident, Hazel May Sligar are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at the Little Cemetery, north of Seminole, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole. She died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at the age of 87 at Integris Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She was born July 22, 1916, in Henryetta to Burrel F. Ward and Vesta (Wagner) Ward. She moved from Shawnee to the Little area in 1945. She lived in the Little community and Prairie Valley area for 48 years. She moved to Prague where she lived for 11 years. At the time of her death, she was a resident of the Parkland Manor Nursing Home in Prague. She married Lewis Adam Sligar on Aug. 25, 1937, in Stillwater and was married for 59 years when he preceded her in death on Jund 20, 1996. He was a homemaker, a Rebeka since 1935, and also a past member of the Prarie Valley Homemakers Club for eight years where she had also served as president. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Roy Sligar on Oct. 7, 1998 and Lewis Mack Sligar on Jan. 8, 2003; one daughter, Margaret in 1939; and one brother, Sherman Ward. She is survived by two sons, John Sligar of Prague and David Sligar of Canon City, Colo.; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Mildred Chase Taussig

Graveside services for native Seminole County resident, Mildred Chase Taussig, were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Funeral services were under the direction of the Martin-Thompson Funeral Home in Texas. She died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at the age of 91. She was born in Wewoka and raised in Seminole. She attended Gulf Park College, Northwestern University and received her B.A. degree from University of Oklahoma. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She lived in Southern California for many years and was a resident of Oklahoma City for many years. She was involved in many civic groups and was very active with the Red Cross in California. She was a retired decorator and spent the last four and one-half years in Grapevine, Texas, where her son resides. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Taussig, and son, Robert Chase Gordon. Survivors: Children, Lyndi McCartney and husband Bill of Westminster, Colo., John H. Taussig and wife, Rhonda of Euless, Texas and Jeane F. Kemper and husband, Jack of Ada; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

ShaLynn Craig

Graveside services for ShaLynn Faith Craig, two-day old infant daughter of Seminole residents Shane and Kay (Peters) Craig are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 at Yeager Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville. She died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, in Oklahoma City. She was born Sept. 13, 2003. She is survived by her parents; grandparents, Sharon Peters of Seminole and Ann, Tim Craig of Harrah and Haskell and Linda Craig of Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jim Peters and one uncle, Jimmie Dale Peters Jr. Pallbearers are Stephen Lemmings, Steve Gentry, Scott Craig, and Donnie Lamb.

Saphronia Brown

Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident, Saphronia Brown are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home with Revs. Redmon Wolf and Houston Tiger officiating. Wake services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at Stout-Phillips Chapel. Interment will be at the Carbitcher Cemetery in Bowlegs under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. She died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at the age of 71 in Seminole Medical Center. She was born Oct. 30, 1931 in Shawnee to Freeland and Lula “Cosar” Carbitcher. She attended school at Sequoyah. She was married to Amos Brown on Jan. 23, 1962 in Eufaula. They lived in the Seminole area for many years, while she worked for Wrangler as a sewing machine operator. She was a member of Tallahassee Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Freeland and Lula Carbitcher; her husband, Amos Brown; two brothers, Babe Adams and Jimmy Carbitcher; one sister-in-law, Nancy Carbitcher and two nephews, Younger “Sonny” Carbitcher and Vincent “Porky” Harjo. She is survived by two daughters, Dorthy Davis and husband, Leroy and Abby Lawhead and husband Johnathan, all of Seminole; seven grandchildren, Erica West, Joel Davis, Siah Davis, Timothy Davis, Crystal Davis, Chris Daniel and Fvs-chvtv Brown, all of Seminole; eight great grandchildren and one sister, Mary Jane Harjo of Bowlegs. Pallbearers will be Glen Tiger, Robby Tiger, Jimpsey Tiger, Ricky Harjo, Raymond Harjo and Curtis Harjo. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews.

Jose Orebaugh

Memorial services for former Seminole County resident, Josie Orebaugh are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Spencer under the direction of Baggerly Funeral Home, Edmond. She died Sept. 12, 2003, at the age of 90. She was born May 27, 1913, and was raised in the “Osage” and Seminole oil fields. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1932 and attended East Central University where she met and married James E. Orebaugh. They moved to Hartshorne when her husband returned from World War II, where he owned and operated a bakery. The family moved to Oklahoma City in 1950 and she worked for Rothchild’s for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, George and Mike. She is survived by son Jim Orebaugh, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
