Funeral services for life long resident of Seminole County, Harold Samuel Cudjoe are scheduled for 1 p. m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at First Baptist Church in Seminole. Interment will follow at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Myers Mortuary. Rev. M.D. Cudjoe will officiate and Th. M. and Eulogy to be given by Dr. T.J. Roberts, TH.D of the Evangelistic Baptist Church of Christ in Oklahoma City. Cudjoe died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the age of 83 in Mercy Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 12, 1920, the first of seven sons, to Darrell and Willie Mae Jones Cudjoe in Lima. He came from a very religious home. Cudjoe confessed his belief in Christ at an early age and later united with the Evenezer Baptist Church in Seminole. He attended Booker T. Washington School in Seminole where he graduated in 1940. After graduation, he was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Robertson and to this couple was born one son, Robert Samuel Cudjoe. On Oct. 28, 1942, Cudjoe was inducted into the United States Army where he served as a medical technician during World War II. After separation from the army with an honorable discharge on Dec. 3, 1945, at Camp Chaffee, Ark., he immediately returned to Seminole. Cudjoe began his college education at Langston University in 1946. On Nov. 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Willie Marie Jones. To this union, six children were born. After graduating in 1950, with a B.S. Degree in Science, the couple moved back to Seminole where Cudjoe lived for the rest of his glorious life. In the fall of 1952, Cudjoe began his teaching career in Vernon, and was interrupted in 1956 due to the enrollment of Vernon decreasing and the closings of the school. He also began a career as foreman at the T.H. Rogers Lumber Yard where he was employed for 12 years. He returned to the classroom at the Boley Training School in the fall of 1968 and retired in 1984. Cudjoe was a member of Alpha Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity and a faithful member of the Seminole County Retired Educators Association. His wife Marie; one daughter, Tonga L’Juana; his parents; and four brothers, Lance, Lawrence, Freeland and Commodore preceeded him in death. He is survived by four sons, Cedric Cudjoe and Robert Samuel Cudjoe, both of Oklahoma City, Andre Roeshawn Cudjoe of Seminole and Tagzmin Cudjoe of Shawnee; two daughters, Acquanita Cudjoe of Dallas, Texas and Conchetta Cudjoe-Hudson of Norman; two brothers, Wilburt Cudjoe and Alvin Cudjoe, both of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Robert Samuel Cudjoe, Tagzmin Cudjoe, Antwan Cudjoe, Cedric L. Cudjoe, Cedric Lomar Cudjoe II, J.T. Thatcher, Scott Hurst, Andre Roeshawn Cudjoe, Gregory Cudjoe, Eric Roberts and Juan L. Bostic. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Patterson, Wilbur Stevenson, Earnest Stillwell, Wayne Chandler Sr. and Melvin Graham Jr.
Linda Flaherty
Funeral services for former Seminole resident, Linda Jo (Hunter) Flaherty were scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at Guardian West Funeral Home Chapel followed by interment at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole under the direction of Guardian West Funeral Home of Oklahoma City. Flaherty died Monday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the age of 57 in Oklahoma City after a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 14, 1946 on Oklahoma City to Bennie and Edna (Malay) Hunter. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one son, Jason Flaherty; ex-husband and companion, Jack Flaherty; one sister, Brenda Grothe; and one granddaughter.
William Hardgrove
Graveside services for William “Bill” Wallace Hardgrove, a long-time Seminole County law enforcement officer, are set for 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. Dan Factor will officiate the services. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka. Hardgrove died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at the age of 73 in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Nov. 25, 1930 near Pharoah in Hughes County to Frederick William Hardgrove and Maude Ellen (Moore) Hardgrove. Hardgrove moved to Wewoka in 1936, at the age of six and grew up in the old Butner community. He graduated from Butner High School in 1949 and attended East Central University at Ada. Hardgrove was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having trained as a paratrooper with the 511th Airborne Division from 1951-1953. On May 5, 1969, he married Betty Lou Keys in Wewoka. He began his law enforcement career with the Wewoka Police Department in 1957 under Chief of Police George Lawson. In 1959, he joined the Seminole County Sheriff’s office under Sheriff Bill Nicholson. Except for a period from 1964-1967 when he worked in law enforcement in Del City, the rest of Hardgrove’s law enforcement career was in Seminole County. He served as Wewoka Police Chief, Deputy Sheriff and Undersheriff for Nicholson, Sheriff Bill Merryfield and Sheriff Charles Sisco. The last years before his retirement, Hardgrove was jailer for the Seminole County Jail. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Thelma Geraldine Wooten and Winona Ruth Hubbard; and a daughter, Shari Gayle Hardgrove. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Keys of the home; two sons, Micheal William Hardgrove and William Keys Hardgrove, both of Wewoka; two daughters, Teresa Joyce Rothrock of Seminole and Mary Kathleen Hardgrove of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Cora Olive “Toby” Davenport of Greeley, Colo.; three grandsons, Starr William Hardgrove of Fayetteville, Ark., Brandan Rothrock and Logan Rothrock, both of Norman; and two nephews, Bobby Merl Wooten Jr. and Monte Scott Davenport of Greeley, Colo. Members of the Seminole County Sheriff’s office will serve as pall bearers.
LaDonna Robertson
Funeral services for Seminole County resident, LaDonna “Donna” Robertson, Wewoka, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka Doug Arnold will officiate, under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka. Robertson died Dec. 3, 2003, at the age of 54 in the Seminole Medical Center. She was a resident of Wewoka, attended Wewoka Schools and was a member of the Church of Christ. She was born to Verlin Lee and Jonell Thompson Hilligoss on Oct. 16, 1949 and married Earl Robertson on April 1, 1971. Robertson is survived by her husband, Earl Robertson of the home, three children, John Hilligoss of Cushing, Jason Robertson and Desree Morris, both of Wewoka; one grandchild; one brother, Johnny L. Hilligoss of Shelton, Wash.; and one sister, Diana Bleeker of Wewoka.
Rosie Simmer
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Rosie (Williams) Simmer of Maud are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Williams family cemetery in Maud under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole. Memorial services are set for Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the World of Life Church at the corner of Franklyn and Green in Maud. Wake services are set for Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Simmer died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the age of 78, at Seminole Medical Center. She was born March 13, 1926, in Maud to Joney Williams and Ellen (Chupcogee) Williams. In 1945, in Wewoka she married Joseph Simmer, who preceded her in death in 1977. Simmer was a homemaker and belonged tot he Achena Presbyterian Church in Maud. She was preceded in death by her husband; companion of 20 years, Johnson Davis in 2000; Jerry Cline, who was raised as her son, in 1983; six brothers and six sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Linda and husband Hershel Davis of Maud; Ricky Cline, who was raised as a son, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Charley Williams of Maud; two sisters, Henryetta Dick of Maud and Lela Williams of Shawnee; and two grandchildren.
Marvin Long
Graveside services for long- time Seminole County resident, Marvin Long of Konawa, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at the Vamoosa Cemetery with Rev. Lester Robbins officiating. Services are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa. Long died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the age of 79 at Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada. He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Seminole to Hub Long and Susan (Effie) Long. He was married to Marie (Payne) on June 25, 1949, in Bakersfield, Calif. He was a heavy equipment operator for Amos Construction Company in Oklahoma City for many years. Long was affiliated with the Asher Assembly of God Church. Long was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Marie of the home, two sons, Marvin Danny Long of Lumberton, N.C. and Mark Dewayne Long of Konawa; three sisters, Donny Joyce Scott of Lumberton, N.C., Linda Monholland of Oklahoma City and Kathy Lynn Everheart of Ada; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Flora Keithley
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Flora May (Robertson) Keithley are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel in Seminole. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral home. Keithley died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the age of 86 at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole. She was born May 19, 1917, in Hazel to William H. Robertson and Ora Velma (Barrett) Robertson. She married Burl E. Keithley, who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1979. Keithley was retired from Wetumka Hospital where she was a nurse. She was a member of the Ideal Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father in 1977, her mother in 1992; her husband; two brothers, Arvel L. Robertson and Robert E. Lee Robertson; one sister, Ozellia Weldon and one nephew, James Ricky Robertson. She is survived by four brothers, James A. Robertson and Roland Robertson, both of Seminole; Oland Robertson of Cleveland, Texas and W. Earl Robertson of Shawnee; two sisters, Lucellia Barber of Bangs, Texas and Retha Edmonds of Wewoka; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Robert Allen Lena
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Robert Allen Lena are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sand Creek Eufaula Church. Revs. Houston Tiger, Billy Merritt, and Jimmy Alexander will officiate. Wake services will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Sand Creek Eufaula Church. Lena passed away Saturday Nov. 29. 2003, joining his wife of 50 years. He was a long life resident of Seminole County. He was born February 28, 1924, to Charlie and Winey Lena of Wewoka, Okla. He was a US Army veteran serving during World War 11 in the Philippines. He received many honors during his service: Philippines Liberation Ribbon, Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Expert Rifle Badge, Expert 45 pistol badge. After serving he come home to marry Wanda Lee Thomas and children born to them nine boys and five girls. Lena was baptized at the Sand Creek Eufaula Church by Joe Tiger. He served on the Seminole Nation Council Band Chairman and on the Justice Board of Education for many years. Lena was one of the first Lighthorseman to serve after WWII. He wanted to recognize his special nephews, Oscar Bunner and Charles Merritt, a niece Cherrie Wood and grandson Brian Harjo. Lena had many special friends in the community, Arnold and Maxine Melton, Dan and Allison Simpson Wade and Wand Hand, Roy Sisco, Frank Streater, Eddie Smith, Burl & Essie Barnhart and Ramsey Thomas. He is survived by Four daughters, Janice Powell of Wewoka, Christine Lena of Wewoka, Lorene Black of Seminole and Jennifer Lena of OKC. Eight sons, Bobby Lena, Glenpool, David Lena, Okemah, Jonas Lena, Wewoka, Ronnie Lena, Sapulpa, Earl Lena, Okeechokee, Fla., Mel Lena, Shawnee, and Dale Lena and Jay Lena, both of Wewoka; 40 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two sisters, Cora Green and Mary Jane Lena, both of Wewoka; and one brother, Frank Lena of Wewoka. Lena was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Winey Lena; and 4 brothers, Joe, Edward, Willie and Tom Lena; one sister, Elizabeth Douglas; one daughter, Cecelia Lena; one son Jeffery Lena; and two grandchildren Bobby Jr. Lena, Veronica Lena and great grandchild Baby Alexander. He is survived by four daughters, Janice Powell and Christine Lena, both of Wewoka, Lorene Black, Seminole, and Jennifer Lena, Oklahoma City. Pallbearers will be Oscar Lee Bunner, Wesley Green Jr., Glen Lena, David Lena Jr., Frankie Lena Jr., and Bennie Lena. Cledith Thrift
Funeral services for Cledith Mae (Lindsey) Thrift, 71 years, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 3 at Little Quasarty Baptist Church, Cromwell. Revs. Fred Lindsey and Eddie Lindsay will officiate. Interment will follow at Little Quarsarty Baptist Church Cemetery, under the direction of the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka. Wake services will be held Tuesday, December 2 at 8 p.m. at the church. Thrift died at Deaconess Hospital, on Saturday, Nov. 29. She was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Wewoka to Eddie and Lucinda Lindsay. She married Ivan Thrift on July 21, 1976, in DeKalb County, Georgia. She worked as an Independent Business Operator until her retirement in 1999. Thrift was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Pauline Deere, and one brother, Thomas Lindsey. She is survived by her three children, Eddie LaGrone, Muskogee, Phyllis Shewmaker, Oklahoma City, Debbie Taber, Oklahoma City, and ten grandchildren. Also, her brothers and sisters, Fred Lindsey, Eddie Lindsey, Oklahoma City, Andrew Lindsey, Oklahoma City, Minnie Poole, Wetumka, Hattie Mae Harjo, Wewoka, Josephine Camp, Wewoka, Lola Lindsey, Henryetta, a special friend, Brenda Wylie, Oklahoma City, and a host of family and friends. Pallbearers will be: Terry Lindsey, Albert Poole, Jeremy Dawson, David Lindsey, Richard Lindsey, and Bill Henson. Floyd Guinn
Graveside services for Konawa native Floyd Roberts Guinn were held Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at Cummings Cemetery in Maud. Robert Birdwell officiated the services. Services were under the direction of Watts Funeral Home of Madill. Guinn died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at his residence in Lebanon, Okla. He was born to Charlie Alex- ander and Effie O. (Mitchell) Guinn on Aug. 4, 1927 in Konawa. Guinn was reared in Ray City and lived in Virginia for several years before moving to Lebanon in 1975. He married Ruby Pearl Arles on Feb. 14, 1999 in Texas. Guinn worked as a Mill Wright for the heavy machinery industry for several years and was a member of the Mill Wright local #1548. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter; one sister; and four brothers. Guinn is survived by his wife, Ruby Pearl Guinn, of the home; one son, Robert Floyd Guinn of Maryland; one daughter, GiGi LeKites, Ocean City, Maryland; one brother, Tommie Guinn, Meeker; and two grandchildren.
Bessie Wise
Wake services for former Seminole County resident, Bessie Kay Wise will be held at Rock Springs Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5. She will be moved to Rock Springs Baptist Church in Sasakwa at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec.5 and her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 Saturday at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Internment will follow at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, with Revs. Billy Coon and Timmy Coon officiating. Wise, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the age of 54 in Abilene, Texas. She was born in Seminole on January 10, 1949 to Keley and Lillie Fixico Wise. She was baptized at Forest Street Baptist Mission on Feb. 3, 1980 by Rev. Terry Walker. Wise is survived by her five children Valerie Beets of Tulsa, Wallace B. Coon Jr. of Hoyt, Kansas, Lillian Shoopman of Edmond, Nancy Coon of Oklahoma City and Simon Coon of Lawrence, Kansas. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Rosie Smith of Wolf, Lucy Coon in Bethany, Terry Coon and Johnny Coon, both of Wolf, Billy Coon and Timmy Coon both of Okemah, Ruth Ann McGlory of Topeka, Eric Wise and Jerry Wise, both of Seminole, Joyce Williams of Konowa, Walter Coon of McAlester, Kathy Wise and Evangeline Wise of Tulsa, Kaylen Wise of Sand Springs, Allen Wise of Calif.; two half sisters, Cindy Griffith and Ruth McGlory; seven granddaughters; eight grandsons and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was proceeded in death by her parents Keley and Lillie Fixico Wise and her brother Keley Wise Jr. Pallbearers will be Eric Wise, Kaylon Wise, Olie Gunnville, Enrique Garza, Rene Garza, Reynaldo Garza, Captain Smith, Terry Coon, Melvin Lewis. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Jimboy.
Elsie Browning
Graveside funeral services for Elsie Browning, mother of a Seminole County resident, are to be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 12 at the Holdenville Cemetery with Rev. Jim McNab officiating. Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Browning died Friday, April 9, 2004 at the age of 92 in Holdenville General Hospital She was born April 13, 1911, in Francis to Jack and Beatrice Heatley She moved to Holdenville with her family as a child. She married late husband, Jim Browning, on December 18, 1929. Browning held various jobs in Holdenville where she worked at Central School Cafeteria, Buxton Drug Store, Cattleman’s Café, P & S Clinic, and Seamproof. She and her late husband also managed the local airport, where they worked and lived for thirty-one years. Surviving her is one sister, Lillie Hayes of Holdenville; three daughters, Barbara McFarland-Pelts of Enid, Ann Pattison of Sasakwa and Jean Morrison of Kiser, Oregon; eight grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and other family and friends. Browning was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-three years, Jim Browning; sons, Jimmy Jack Browning and Ronnie Browning; her sisters, Edith Meshew, Gladys Meshew and Pearl Hughey; two brothers, Earl Heatley, and Oris Heatley; and one granddaughter, Lisa Morrison.
Orvil Andrison
Funeral services for Seminole resident, Orvil Lee Andrison are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 10 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Chris Stinnett officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole. Andrison died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the age of 74 at Unity Health Center North in Shawnee. He was born July 22, 1929, in Lawrence to Oather L. Andrison and Mavelline (Simpson) Andrison. He was married to Minnie Lou (McDoniel) Andrison on Jan. 23, 1953, in Ada. He was a sales representative for Devoe Paint Company, a division of Celeanese Company, retiring in 1973. He started and was the first manager of Sherwin-Williams in Seminole. He moved to the Seminole in 1963 from Stratford. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a former member of the American Legion and VFW. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Lou Andrison of the home; and two sons, Mark Andrison of Bartlesville and Jim Andrison of Tulsa.
