Funeral services for Maud resident Lois Graden Martin are pending with Swearingen Funeral Home. He died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, in Shawnee. He was 90. Martin, a longtime Maud resident, was born June 9, 1915, to Carlos Cleveland Martin and Hettie Angeline (Casey) Martin in Parthenon, Ark. On Sept. 17, 1935, he married Eleanor (McCulloch) Martin in Hazel. Martin was a retired Assembly of God Minister and roustabout for Sinclair Oil, which later was Atlantic Richfield, from which he retired in 1977. He was a member of the Maud Assembly of God. Martin was preceded in death by Daniel Leon Martin; granddaughter, Yvonie Kathleen Martin; four sisters, Bessie Marie Hopper, Jesse Lena Self, Vela Dee Lewis and Biva Mae Palmer; and one brother, Bois Beul Martin. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Martin of Maud; six sons and daughters-in-law, John Paul and Neta Martin of Greenville, Texas, James David Martin of Talihina, L.G. Jr. and Julia Martin of Maud, Lawerence Wesley and Joyce Martin of Sasakwa, Lemuel Timothy and Linda Martin of Maud, and Luther Carlus Martin of Maud; four daughters, Frieda Lee Martin of Maud, Billie Curtis of Seminole, Rebecca Lou Duncan of Sulphur, and Cindy Kay and Ronnie Robertson of Seminole; 18 grand children; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Daniel 'Chebon' Griffin Armstrong
Daniel "Chebon" Griffin Armstrong has passed on to be with the Lord. Danny left us on Wednesday afternoon Nov. 23 of 2005 at Carl Albert Hospital in Ada. Danny was born April 8, 1942 in Konawa to Hobart and Irene Armstrong. He was a member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. He was very proud of his Indian Heritage, and loved to do his Indian Arts and Crafts. Danny was a hard worker and did general labor for many around the Konawa and Asher area. Danny has resided in the Asher and Konawa area all his life. He attended Asher School and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Asher. Family and friends were very important to Danny so he enjoyed getting together and visiting. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hobart and Irene Armstrong, one sister Mary Wiley and one brother Robert Armstrong. Survivors include five sisters, Vesta Mauch of San Bernardino, Calif., Betty Burgess of Ada, Nettie Moreland and Edna Odell both of Asher, and Katie Breeden of Ada. He is survived by two brothers, Bill Armstrong and Frank Armstrong, both of Konawa, many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa, Saturday at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Frank Moppin of Spring Indian Baptist Church of Sasakwa. Burial will be at Vamoosa Cemetery. There will be a wake service held Friday at 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Officiating is Rev. Arthur Carpitcher of Pentecostal Indian Mission of Konawa. Pallbearers will be Frank Arm strong, Larry Bruno, Travis Odell, Darrell Armstrong, Steve Anderson and Ronnie Odell. Honorary Bearers will be Bill Armstrong, Hobart Armstrong, Brian Bruno and Bob Armstrong. Services are under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home.
Steve Factor
Graveside funeral services for Steve L. Factor were scheduled for Friday at Johnson Cemetery. Rev. Kelley Tiger officiated. Burial was under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka. Factor, a former Wewokan, died Nov. 17, 2005, in Oklahoma City at the age of 45. He was born April 28, 1960, in Wewoka to Ida Joe Long. He attended Bowlegs Schools and later worked as a general laborer in Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his mother; adoptive parents, Archie and Teresa Factor; sister Tonya Sawyer; and brother Michael W. Sawyer. Survivors include one son and three daughters; four sisters, Pauline Counts, Henryetta, Tina Yarbrough, Gainesville, Texas, Linda Dorsey Smith, Broken Arrow, and Tina Tims, Oklahoma City; and four brothers, Anthony Factor and Donnie Doyle, both of Seminole, Roy Martin, Sapulpa, and Michael Murphy, Konawa.
Bill Markovich
Funeral services for Ada resident William "Bill" Jesse Markovich are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Steve DeShazo will be officiating with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Francis under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home. Tinker Honor Guard will conduct the military honors. Markovich, 70, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 in Seminole. He was born Aug. 3, 1935 in Union Town, Pa. To John and Helen Spontack. He graduated from high school in Pennsylvania and married Doris Maxine Whittington on Nov. 4, 1961 in Wichita, Kan. She died on May 3, 1994 in Oklahoma City and he moved to the Ada area in the late 1970's. Markovich retired from the United States Air Force with over 20 years of experience. He served during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Francis Freewill Baptist Church, served as a Shriner Klown, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Chickasaw Honor Guard. Surviving him are four daughters, Helen Gragert, Monica Bryant and Mary Dossey, all of Seminole and Patricia McCurry of port Charlotte, Fla.; one son, Wayne McCurry of Cape Coral, Fla.; three brothers, John Markovich and Louie Markovich, both of Indiana and Eddie Markovich of California; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Hiley Lucy
Funeral services for former Maud resident Hiley Levon Lucy are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist church in Maud. Interment is to follow at Cummings Cemetery under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home. Lucy, 77, of Oklahoma City, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005 at Windsor Hills Care center in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 27, 1928 in Maud to Sam and Clara Emma (Templar) Lucy. He moved to Maud in 1959 and worked at Tinker Air Force Base before moving to Posumkingdom, Texas, then to Choctaw. Lucy married Ina Mae on March 14, 1953 in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death on June 19, 1959. After working at Tinker Air Force Base he retired from General Motors in Oklahoma City in 1990. He served in the United States Navy for five years during the Korean War on the aircraft carrier "Princeton." His parents also preceded him in death. Surviving is one brother, "Rufus" Clifton Lucy of Choctaw and three sisters, "Willie" May Reeder of Oklahoma City, "Tessie" Fay Duke of Buyer, Texas and "Chesta" Geraldine Cowan of Boui, Texas.
Isaac Johnson
Funeral services for longtime Konawa resident Isaac Wesley Johnson are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Cold Springs Baptist Church of Konawa with Rev, Dorsey Nero and Rev. Arthur Carpitcher to officiate. Interment is to follow services at Emarthle Family Cemetery under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Wake services will be held Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. at Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home. Johnson, 67, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005 at his residence in Konawa. He was born Sept. 1, 1938 in Spaulding to Newman and Eliza (Emarthle) Johnson. He married Betsy Wolf on June 27, 1963 in Konawa and received an honorable discharge from the Oklahoma National Guard on May 1, 1958, and from the Army Reserve on May 1, 1963. Johnson worked in construction for several years and was currently working parttime at the United States Post Office in Konawa. He was a member of the Baptist faith and sang with the Seminole Boys Gospel Group. His parents, one daughter, Lanita Johnson (1966) and one sister preceded him in death. Surviving is his wife Betsy Johnson; one son, Michael Johnson; two daughters, Beverly Givens and Sandra Johnson, all of Konawa; three sisters, Lucy George of Holdenville, Susie Buchanan and Sally Johnson, both of Konawa; one brother, Frank Johnson of Konawa and one granddaughter. Pallbearers for the services will be Junior George, Gregory George, Ronnie George, Russell Johnson, Jared Johnson and Chris Buchanan. Honorary bearers will be Marcus Harjo, Harry Douglas, Leroy (Keno) King, Bruce Douglas, Jeremy Alberson and Nelvin Hudson.
Jane Harran
Services for former Seminole resident Jane Roberta Harran are scheduled for 10 Monday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Welch, Okla. with Pastor David Karges officiating. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 7 – 9 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Funeral Home. The body will be cremated and a private family burial will be held at Passumpsic Cemetery in Vermont. Harran, 69, of Grove died at Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005 at Integris Grove General Hospital. She was born Aug. 29, 1936 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to Robert C. and Julia (Bruce) Harpin. She married Marnel Harran Nov. 18, 1956 in Passumpsic, Vermont. The couple later moved to Oklahoma to be close to family. Harran was an active member of the First Methodist Church, Eastern Stars and the Green Mountain Grange, all of Seminole. She was an avid homemaker and enjoyed her family. Surviving is her husband; two sons, Franklyn Harran and Howard Harran, both of Mary Esther, Fla.; two daughters, Marja Mayes of Navarre, Fla. and Janel Bedor of Siloam Springs, Ark.; one brother, Bruce Harpin of Passumpsic and five grandchildren.
Dorothy Carter
Funeral services will be held for Wewoka resident Dorothy Jean Carter at 2 p.m. Friday at the Assembly of God in Holdenville with Rev. Dale Jennings officiating. There will be a visitation time from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening. Interment will follow at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Dorothy Jean Carter of Wewoka passed away on Nov. 8, 2005 in their home at the age of 80. She was born on June 16, 1925 to William A. and Ancy Belle "Yandell" Catlett in Wetumka. She married George T. Carter on June 8, 1944 in Holdenville. Their home was in numerous places throughout the country, and they moved back to Wewoka in 1960 and had lived there since that time. Her last job was working as a secretary for the State of Oklahoma Insurance Commission. She is survived by her husband George T. Carter of the home; three children, Mike Carter of Odessa, Texas, Linda Watts of Denton, Texas and Bob W. Carter of Houston, Texas; one brother, Ray Catlett of Wewoka; two sisters, Ruth Meiske of Taylor, Texas and Audra Creach of Wewoka; five grandchildren, Vicki, Kenneth, Charles, Gene, and Ronna Michelle, five great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Ruth Lucy
Funeral services for lifelong Maud area resident Ruth Deloris (Pratt) Lucy are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud with Glen Williams to officiate. Interment is to follow services at Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home. Lucy, 95, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005 at Sunset Estates Nursing Home in Tecumseh. She was born March 25, 1910 in Maud to Louis William Pratt and Nancy Gertrude (Lusk) Pratt. She and her sons were born at the same homeplace that her father acquired in the land run. Ruth married Robert "Garland" Lucy on Sept. 8, 1925 in Konawa. She worked at the Harjo School as a cook for 25 years and at Maud School as a cook for 11 years. Ruth then worked for the Maud Housing Authority, the Action Program and at the Maud Senior Citizen's Center. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Ruth and Garland were also members of the Maud Roundup Club who loved to dance and go to ball games. Her parents; husband, Garland Lucy (June 19, 1986); one son, Loy Lucy (who died in a house fire in 1940 at the age of 13); one daughter, Lueree Hudson (1990); two brothers, Willie Pratt (1913) and an infant brother Donald Pratt (1909) and two sisters, Maggie Cheatwood (1995) and Mable Miller (1994) preceded her in death. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Nancy Lucy of Maud, Leroy and Betty Lucy of Edmond and Jack Lucy and companion Joyce Townsend of Tecumseh; nine grandchildren, J.P. Lucy, Jeff Lucy, Hiley Lucy, Robert Lucy, Rex Lucy, Lorna Horne, Lueroyce Briggs, Jim Hudson and Linda Adams; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Casket bearers for the services will be J.P. Lucy, Jeff Lucy, Robert Lucy, Rex Lucy, Jim Hudson and Hiley Lucy. Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. tonight and until the service time Thursday at Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home at the corner of Broadway and Monroe in Maud.
Alfred Brannon
Services for former Seminole resident Alfred Brannon are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wilbert Tripplett officiating. Interment will follow at Earlsboro Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Lunch will be served at Galilee Baptist Church following the service. Alfred Brannon passed away, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 in Shawnee at the age of 91. He was born on Aug. 19, 1914 to Robert and Nellie (Ennis) Brannon in Earlsboro. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was retired from Tinker Air Force Base. His parents; one daughter, Betty Lou Bennett; three sisters, Cora Amy, Ethel Pruitt, and Lonada Few; five brothers, Frank, Robert, Henry, Essau, and Jacob Brannon, and one grandson, Billy Gene Bennett, Jr, precede him in death. He is survived by son-in-law, Billy Gene Bennett, Sr.; one brother, Isaac Brannon of Shawnee and two sisters; Juanita Brannon of Earlsboro and Bulena Stillwell of Los Angeles, Calif. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren; Rita Wright, Carolyn Bennett, Jerry Bennett, and Anita Bennett; nine great-grandchildren, numerous great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be the nephews.
Richard D. Darr
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Richard D. Darr are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Barnes & Johnson Funeral Home in Midwest City. Burial is to follow services at Blackburn Cemetery in Norman. Darr, 62, of Midwest City died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005. He was born in Seminole Aug. 2, 1943 to Roy and Georgia Darr. Richard was raised and spent many of his adult years in Seminole. He worked at Tinker Air Force Base in the Jet Engine Repair Facility until his retirement as a Section Chief in 1991. After his retirement he spent many days at the lake on his houseboat. He truly enjoyed the lake and fishing. He also enjoyed cooking and perfected his very own BBQ recipes for anyone who wanted to eat. Richard enjoyed spending time with his family and friends during the countless occasions he had cooked for them. His famous ribs will be greatly missed. His parents, Roy and Georgia Darr of Seminole and one brother, William H. "Corky" Darr preceded him in death. Surviving is his wife Donna, daughter Laura Morris and granddaughter Morgan, all of the home and six other children and their spouses, Tommy and Diane Darr of Seminole, Carrie and Wes Marshall of Norman, Pat and Kenny Sharp of Kansas, Okla., Jim and Pam Moore of Midwest City, Richard Don Darr Jr. of Kansas, Okla. and Rachel and Shawn Sherfield of Eufaula. In addition five brothers and six sisters-in-law, Gene and Peggy of Norman, Gary and Kellie of Mineral Wells, Texas, Alan and Lisa of Bowlegs, Kenneth and Barbara of Seminole, Tim and Debbie of Seminole and Jenny Fairbanks of Seminole; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive him. One of Richard's greatest wishes was to see Granddaughter Morgan go to school, and that wish has come true. We will all miss you so much. The family would like to offer special thanks to the following for all of their help and understanding: Dr. Mark Weitzel and Dr. Raman, along with all of their staff and St. Anthony's Hospital. And special thanks for Roy for his help, understanding and love for the last 30 days.
Joyce Branscum
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Joyce Branscum are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel in Oklahoma City with graveside services following at 1 p.m. at the Calvary Cemetery, Shawnee. Joyce Irene Branscum, of Oklahoma City, passed away Nov. 5, 2005. She was the daughter of Cecil Baxter and Evelyn Peltier born March 8, 1927 in Shawnee. Her father, mother, the father who raised her, William Hinton, and her best friend in life and sister, Jeanne Marie Lathan, preceded her in death. Joyce was raised and attended school in Bethel, graduating Bethel High School in May 1945. She married her childhood sweetheart, Truman Branscum June 7, 1945. They made their home in Seminole where they raised their three children. Joyce helped build Hillcrest Apartments and started Taco Hut restaurant while in Seminole. She was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, Modern Literature, Republican Party, the Alzheimer's Association, garden clubs and several other civic organizations. But more than anything she dearly loved being a mother to her children and grandmother to her grandchildren. She had a fierce pride in her Potawatomi Indian heritage and enjoyed learning about the culture as well as teaching her children about it. Joyce has lived in the Oklahoma City area since 1980. Later in life, Joyce married and spent several happy years with B.L. Moore to whom she has remained very close with. She is survived by her three children, Barry Branscum, Leslie Masilon, Lisa Rumsey; grandchildren Brooke Rumsey, Matthew Masilon and Trent Masilon; brother William E. Hinton and his family; sister Kathy Baxter; nieces Susan Worthington and Terri Ann Harbison as well as several other nieces and nephews. All who loved Joyce knew of her love of flowers but those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the Alzheimer's' Association.
Doris Barnhill
No services are scheduled at this time for Earlsboro resident Doris Elaine Barnhill. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Barnhill, 59, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005. She was born Dec. 19, 1945 in Malvern, Ark. To William Carl and Geraldine Alexander Russell. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of the home; one son, Lance Jordan of Norman; four daughters, Kandy Robertson, Paula Long, Regina Deninno, all of South Carolina and Shawna Jordan of Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Nova Sanders
Graveside services for lifelong Cromwell resident Nova Marie Sanders are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Dennis Yeubanks is to officiate with arrangements under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Sanders, 63 died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 at her residence in Cromwell. She was born March 4, 1941 in Okemah to Gipson "Shorty" Smith and Thelma (Douglas) Smith. She married Alvie Sanders on Sept. 5, 1959 in Wewoka and was a homemaker of the Holiness faith. Her parents, one son Alan Sanders (February 1963) and one sister, Mary Waybourn preceded her in death. Surviving is her husband of the home; two sons, Mark G. Sanders of Cromwell and Jason T. Sanders of Aurora, Colo.; one brother, Jimmy Don Smith of Cromwell; one sister, Leona Wilbanks of Eufaula and six grandchildren.
