Verna Burgess

PRAGUE ¾ Funeral services for Verna Mae Burgess, 90, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Seminole. Dr. Kelvin Moseley will officiate.

Burial will follow in Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen and Parks Brothers funeral homes in Seminole and Prague.

Visitation is scheduled at Swearingen Funeral Home.

Burgess died Friday at her home in Seminole.

She was born Jan. 12, 1907, in Jasper, Ark., to George W. and Gertrude (Davis) Bethany. She moved to Seminole County when she was 16 years old. She graduated from Centerview High School.

She was a longtime and active member of First Baptist Church. She was a member of the adult choir and was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.

She married Elvin H. Burgess on Dec. 18, 1929; he died Dec. 1, 1993.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include one son, Al Burgess, Midwest City; one daughter, Velma Hamilton, Pauls Valley; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mamie Burgess

Funeral services for Mamie Gertrude "Gertie" Swarb Burgess, 85, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Maud.

Rev. Robert Braizer and Rev. Bob Rogers officiated the service.

Burgess died Sunday at Seminole Municipal Hospital.

Burial took place at Tecumseh Mission Cemetery under the direction of Knight Funeral Home of Maud.

Burgess was born in Harjo on October 6, 1911 to W.M. "Mack" and Armelda Isabelle (Middleton) Wise.

She was married to her first husband Luther "Bud" Swarb, who died in 1942. She later married Hiram "Sarg" Burgess on March 25, 1974 in Hazelgreen, Ala. He survives her of the home.

Burgess retired from the Air Craft Supply department at Tinker Air Force Base on June 20, 1972.

She was a member of Earlsboro First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, two sons, A.J. Swarb and Waymon A. Swarb; one grandson, Michael Eston Swarb; three sisters, Chrisa L. Price, Florence Gamble and Maude Wise; three brothers, Marvin Wise, Clarence Wise and William Dewey Wise; and her parents.

Other survivors include three sons, Eston Swarb, McLoud, Harold Swarb, Maud, and Kenneth Swarb, Manhans, Texas; two sisters, Omie Wilson and Jewel Wilson, both of Harjo; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers were Bubby Swarb, Warren Swarb, Steven Swarb, Dennis Swarb, Mike Hunt, Randy Horn, Christopher Swarb and Gary Thomason.

Amanda Carmichael

Graveside services for Amanda Ruth Carmichael, 93, are scheduled for today at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole.

Gene Garrison will officiate, and services will be under the direction of John M. Ireland Funeral Home in Oklahoma City.

Carmichael died Sunday.

She was born Feb. 25, 1904 in Mannsville.

She received her masters degree from Oklahoma University, and she taught at Taft Junior High.

Carmichael was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

Survivors include two sisters, Alleen Cook of Shawnee and Dee Turner of Bartlesville.

Gerthie Carolina

Funeral Services for lifelong Sasakwa resident Gerthie Carolina, 81, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Wewoka.

She died on Monday.

Rev. Clifford Burt will officiate the service.

Interment will take place at Thomas Town Cemetary in Sasakwa, with Pollard Funeral Home Inc. of Oklahoma City officiating.

Carolina was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mack Moore on July 21, 1916.

She was married to Dave E. Carolina.

Carolina, a housewife, was active in the Middle Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by five nephews and one niece.

Henry Carroll

Funeral services for Henry C. Carroll, 87, were held Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Klein Funeral Home in Klein, Texas.

Graveside service and committal were at Klein Memorial Park in Tomball, Texas.

Carroll died at his home in Houston, Texas on Friday, Aug. 15.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1909 in Yale to John Wiley and Matilda Ryan Carroll.

Carroll moved to Wewoka in 1926 at the age of 17 to work in the Seminole oilfields. He was the owner of Marby Construction Company and operated out of Wewoka for over 40 years working the oilfields throughout Oklahoma.

He closed his operation in 1968 and moved to Odessa, Texas to work in the Permian Basin oilfields.

In 1973 he moved to Houston, Texas where he retired from Brown and Root Construction Company after working over 50 years in the oil industry. After retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing and travel.

Carroll met and married Reba A. McMahan. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Carroll on Simonton, Texas; and two daughters, Jane Williams, and Sharon Gray, both of Houston, Texas.

Other survivors include six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

David Carruth

Funeral services for David C. "Dave" Carruth are scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Chapel in Seminole. Tommy Gallaher will officiate.

Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Carruth, 83, died Friday in Russellville, Ark.

He was born March 8, 1914 in Wayne to George Younger Carruth and Ethyl (Claxton) Carruth.

Carruth came to Seminole over 70 years ago from Osage County. He married Elsie Owens on Feb. 16, 1935 in Pauls Valley. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1991.

Carruth was owner of an oil field service and production company and was a cattle rancher.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Seminole and a member of the Masons and Elks Lodges.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, and one grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Phil Carruth and Craig Carruth, both of Russellville; and two daughters, Davene Shipman of Seminole and Diane Knox of Oakton, Va.

Other survivors include ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers include Glen Haines, Jim Carruth, Phil Carruth Jr., Doug Shipman, Brian Knox and Randy Adkins.

Timothy Lewis Choate

ADA ¾ Graveside funeral services for Timothy Lewis Choate, 16, of Konawa are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Cemetery.

Rev. Winston Curtis will officiate. Burial will be under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home.

Choate died in an explosion near Konawa early Sunday.

He was born Jan. 19, 1981, in Oklahoma City to Kathy and Robert Lewis Choate. He attended school at Hodges, moving to Konawa in October, 1995.

He was a student at Konawa High School, where he was a long-distance track runner. He was second runner-up in the state competition last year. He also played basketball.

He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include his mother, Kathy Choate of Oklahoma City; his father, Robert Lewis Choate, Mansfield, Texas; his grandfather, Lewis Choate, Hodges; and his grandmother, Virgie Weems, Konawa.

Pallbearers will include Adam Baker, Shawn Reeves, Chris Parker, ike Tenney and Jeff and Jason Park.

Peggy Jean Cochran

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident, Peggy Jean (Beckett) Cochran will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Crown Heights Christian Church in Oklahoma City.

Cochran died Saturday in Oklahoma City.

She was born to Si and Flossie (Eaton) Beckett in Wewoka. She attended New Lima High School and is a graduate of East Central University.

Cochran married Joseph E. Cochran Jr. He preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jo-Ann Phillips.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph E. Cochran, Oklahoma City, and Michael Cochran, Columbus Ohio; one daughter, Karen Renfrow, Edmond; and one brother, Si Dean Beckett, Arlington, Texas.

Other survivors include three grandsons.
