James Edward McGee
LUBBOCK, TEXAS - James Edward McGee, 19, son and grandson of several former Seminole County residents, died Friday night in a one-car accident when his car skidded and hit a house in Lubbock.
According to the report by Lubbock Police Department Media Relations representative Bill Morgan, McGee’s 1992 Honda Civic four-door car was driving south on a main thoroughfare when he ran a full-red light.
Speed indicators in place at the intersection clocked him at 84 mph through the intersection, a 45-mile-per-hour zone.
While the north side of the intersection was a five lane street, the south side had yet to be widened and was still only two lanes.
Morgan said McGee was in the far right lane of the five lane while going through the intersection, and overcorrected to stay on the road.
The car apparently went airborne, turning 90 degrees clockwise in the air, and landed sideways in the backyard of a house a block away.
The speed of the car kept it traveling sideways in the yard, leaving trenches eight feet long as it headed for the house.
Just before impact, the car flipped up, and the hood, top and trunk lid of the car impacted the house with the force of a bomb.
Police and bystanders said that the impact was so hard, mud flew from the car, over the house and hit a pickup parked at the curb of the house, denting the side.
Extensive damage was done to the dining room and kitchen wall of the house.
McGee was partially ejected from the vehicle and was killed upon impact.
According to Morgan, there was no indication of alcohol involved.
Funeral services for McGee were held this morning at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lubbock.
Bishop Thomas Ashdown officiated at the service. Arrangements were under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
Burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Tiger Family Cemetery, where his great-grandparents are buried.
