Graveside services for Seminole resident Lois Strain Thrasher will be at 11 a.m. Monday Dec. 18 at South Duck Creek in Mounds, Okla. under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. The Rev. Dianne Harbeston will officiate. Thrasher died on Thursday Dec. 14, 2000 at Seminole Medical Center the age of 65. Thrasher was born Oct. 11, 1935 in Sulpulpa to Kennith Howard Strain and Ruby Faye (Patty) Strain. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Okmulgee. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two daughters; Carol Shaw of Blue Mound, Texas and Sharon Bowden of Bowlegs, three sisters; Darla Harbeston of Mounds, Paula Armstrong of Kellyville, and Diana Blankenship of Mannford, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Donny Ledbetter
Memorial services for Donny W. Ledbetter, 53, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the First Church of God at Strothers and Highland in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Services will conclude at the church. Viewing will be held at Swearingen Funeral Home today and until 5 p.m. Saturday. Donny left to be with his Lord and Master on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in a hunting accident at his favorite location on this earth. Donny was born Feb. 25, 1947 in Okemah to Rev. W.O. “Bill” and Doris (Titsworth) Ledbetter. He graduated from Konawa High School in 1965 and received an honorable discharge from the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Donny attended Southern Nazarene University. He married Lilly Sullins on April 14, 1967. Donny retired from OG&E; on June 1, 2000 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the OG&E; Pioneer Club and OG&E; Trailblazers. He was also actively involved as a “White Hat” at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. Donny was a member of Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City. He was an avid hunter and fan of the great outdoors. Donny was proceeded in death by his father, Bill Ledbetter; his mother-in-law, Ruby Sullins, and his father-in-law, Arnie Sullins. He is survived by his wife, Lilly, of the home in Seminole; his daughter, Dawnya Ledbetter of Oklahoma City; his son, Dane Ledbetter of the home in Seminole; his mother, Doris Ledbetter of Bristow; brothers, W.O. “Corky” Ledbetter, Billy Ledbetter of Bristow, Geron Ledbetter of Broken Arrow; one sister, Lanetta McKay of St. Louis, Mo.; his brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Jerry and Betty Sullins; and a host of wonderful family and friends.
Ratha Fleetwood
Funeral services for longtime Maud resident Ratha M. Fleetwood, 82, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Maud with Rev. Ed George officiating. Interment will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Fleetwood died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000 at Seminole Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 28, 1918 in Douglas County, Mo. to James R. Stephens and Margaret Elizabeth (Tetrick) Stephens. She married Fred Fleetwood in Drury, Mo. on March 7, 1933. Fleetwood was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Maud and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Nov. 4, 1994; a daughter, Donna Prescott on Aug. 31, 1999; a son, Fred Fleetwood, Jr.; two grandsons Randy L. Prescott and Mark Guinn; one granddaughter, Paula Turnbow Sanders; and a great-granddaughter, Misty Gale Hudson. Fleetwood is survived by five daughters, Roezell Flesher of Lindsay, Erma Guinn and Fern Turnbow, both of Konawa, Loretta Jennings of Oklahoma City, and Cleta Jo Crawford of Stroud; one son, Randy R. Fleetwood of Wewoka; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are listed as J.T. Flesher, Van Guinn, Mike Crawford, Michael Joe Crawford, Jerry Upshaw, Jason Jennings, Aaron Crawford, Butch Jennings, and Bobby Hudson.
Stanley Edmond
Stanley Lewis Edmond was born October 18, 1946 to C.L. and Doretha Edmond in Seminole. At an early age Stanley was stricken with rheumatic fever that left him deaf. Although this was a set back for Stanley he persevered. He never lost hope that he would be somebody. Stanley received his formal education from the following schools and technical school: Taft School for the Deaf in Taft, Okla., Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur, Okla. and Okmulgee State Tech in Okmulgee. After graduating from OMST, Stanley moved to the Los Angeles area where he was employed with a government agency. He took up a hobby that later became his favorite past time, bowling. Stanley bowled with many leagues in California and Oklahoma. He would spend his vacation each year traveling to different tournaments. He returned to Oklahoma in the 1970's. He began working at Wrangler in Seminole. He also worked at Grace Cleaners in Oklahoma City, Canteen Distributers in Oklahoma City, God Father’s Pizza in Oklahoma City and Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City. Stanley worked at Tinker for nearly 20 years and was a very faithful employee. He always gave 100 percent to any endeavor that he took on. While living in the Del City area, Stanley became friends with many people and soon united with the First Southern Baptist Church for the deaf where he continued to serve faithfully until his death. He was a willing worker, filling in where ever needed. Stanley leaves to cherish his homegoing his mother and step-father, Doretha and Roy Winrow of Seminole; his father, C.L. Edmond of Berkeley, Calif.; nine sisters and a brother-in-law, Ollie Webb of West Covina, Calif., Rozetta “Dee” Winrow of Seminole, Loretta Young of Long Beach, Calif., Ginger Winrow of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Winrow of Shawnee, P. Vanessa and Bobby Washington of Tecumseh, Loretta Stanton of San Francisco, Calif., Gwen Edmond of Oakland, Calif., Angela Fairfield of Berkeley, Calif; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Johnnie Mae Foxx, Nathaniel Winrow, and Roy Jr., all of Seminole, Randy and Teresa Winrow of Shawnee and Marlon Edmond of Denver, Colo. He is also survived by an uncle and aunt, Wesley B. and Eunice Edmond of Oklahoma City and a host of great aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding Stanley in death was his paternal and maternal grandparents; brother, Edward Andrew Foxx and three nephews, Terry Deshawn Winrow, Desmond Gaines Winrow, Kenneth Lee Webb. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Seminole. Interment will follow at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka. Obie Scott
Funeral services for Obie Franklin Scott, 96, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Karges officiating. Burial is to be at Holdenville City Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. He died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000 at Pioneer Nursing Home. Scott was born on April 8, 1904 in Dover, Ark. to John Owen Scott and Ann (Proffer) Scott. He married Myrtle Williams on Dec. 23, 1938 in Wewoka. Scott was a barber for over 60 years. He worked at the Esquire Barber Shop in Seminole for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a Private First Class with the 1st Battalion of the 300th Infantry during World War II. Scott was a member of First United Methodist Church in Seminole and an active Heritage House participant. He is survived by his wife of Seminole and several nieces and nephews.
Lucille King
Funeral services for former Cromwell area resident Lucille S. King, 67, were held Monday at Heritage Rock Church in Holdenville. Rev. Edward Bear officiated at the services. Interment followed at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home. King died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000 at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She was born Dec. 18, 1932 in Okfuskee County to Ben “Panoske” and Sarah (Bruner) Harjo. Raised in the Bearden and Cromwell communities, she worked for 10 years as a seamstress for Lillian Russell, and a teacher’s aide in Holdenville for 19 years. King was a member of the Cedar River Indian Baptist Church. She was married to Tom King Jr. on Feb. 2, 1954 in Holdenville. He survives her of the home. King was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Bertha Johnson and one brother, Mose Harjo. Other survivors include one daughter, Cytha Thetford; one son, Don “Punkin” King; two brothers, Thomas Harjo and Ben “Speedy” Harjo; five sisters, Jennie Walker, Joyce Miller, Wanda Murry, Leora Roberson and Carol Perkins; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers are listed as Bob Petsermoie, Jeremiah Lewis, Don Ade, Ray Franks, Rowdy Harper and Henry Harper.
Frieda Laxton
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Frieda Mae (Gentry) Laxton, 66, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial is to be at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Laxton died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at a Huntsville, Ala. Hospital. She was born in Seminole on Oct. 15, 1934 to William Gentry and Melissa (Shaffer) Gentry. She married Bobby Lee Laxton and was a homemaker. Laxton was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Athens, Ala. And a volunteer at Athens Limestone Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents. Laxton is survived by her husband of the home; two sons, David Laxton of Live Oak, Fla., and Bobby Laxton of Athens, Ala.; five sisters, Louise Holman of Madagoria, Texas, Mary Payne of Hominy, Nancy Barton of Columbus, Miss., Betty Henley of Huntsville, Ala, and Dee Nelson of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Wallace ‘Walt’ Minnick
Wallace L. “Walt” Minnick died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at Pioneer Nursing Home at the age of 87. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Minnick was born on July 22, 1913 in Yale to Herman H. and Stella (Praither) Minnick. He married Arnie Clymer on June 30, 1937 in Chandler. Minnick had worked for employee of Amarada Oil Company. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of the Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge. Minnick was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenyon Minnick; and one sister, Juanita LaDoris Minnick. He is survived by his wife of the home; one brother, Raymond Minnick of Hobbs, N.M.; and several other relatives.
Christopher Tanyan
Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident Christopher George Tanyan, 32, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dorsey Nero officiating. Burial is to follow at the Tanyan Family Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Viewing will be held in the Tanyan family home. Wake services are to be held at the home at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The body will be returned to Swearingen Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Tanyan was born Dec. 9, 1968 in Seminole to Benjamin Franklin Tanyan and Betty (Harjo) Tanyan. He was an oilfield worker by profession. Tanyan was preceded in death by his father in 1988. He is survived by his mother of Seminole; a son, Zachary Tanyan of Pampa, Texas; six brothers, Albert Tiger, Simon Harjo, Clifton Tanyan, and Jimmy Harjo, all of Seminole; Anthony Tanyan of Konawa, and Curtis Harjo of Shawnee; and two sisters, Carolyn Talamasey and Ruby Tanyan, both of Seminole. Casket bearers are listed as Glenn Tiger, Robbie Tiger, Johnny Mike Fixico, Mike Harjo, Bill Mendenhall, Robert Fletcher, and William Snyder, Sr. Honorary casket bearers are Simon Harjo, Albert Tiger, Clifton Tanyan, Curtis Tanyan, Anthony Tanyan, and Ronnie Tanyan.
Rev. L.D. Terry
Funeral services for Earlsboro resident Rev. L.D. Terry, 74, were held Tuesday at Harvey Road Baptist Church in Seminole. Revs. Tim Green and Larry Chesser officiated at the services. Interment followed at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Terry died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 at Shawnee Regional Hospital. He was born Feb. 21, 1926 in Arpala to Bill and Dovey Terry. A veteran, he served in the US Navy during World War II. Terry was employed as a mechanic, owned a heating and air business in Altus, and became an ordained minister in 1967. He served as the pastor for Yeager Baptist Church from 1995 until recently. He married Bonnie (Anderson) Terry on March 21, 1984 in Altus. She survives him of the home. Terry was preceded in death by his first wife, Foy Terry; three brothers, Dollas, Albert and Jesse Terry; one sister, Norma Gene; and one stepson, Rick Anderson. Other survivors include two sons, Rick Terry, Colorado, and Dwayne Terry, Mississippi; two daughters, Lila Kerry, Vernal, Utah and Bonnie Jackson, Shreveport, La.; two stepdaughters, Judy Chaffin and Kathy Stacy, both of Earlsboro. He was also survived by two brothers, Virgil Terry, Kentucky, and Dallas Terry, Texas; one sister, Deloris Terry, North Carolina; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Lucille Newport
Lucille E. Newport died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 94. A private family burial was held on Thursday. Newport was born on June 23, 1906 in Terre Haute, Ind. to James and Emma E. (Taylor) Butts. She married Ralph K. Newport in 1926 in Drumright and was a homemaker. The couple moved to Seminole 72 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 30, 1974; her parents; three sons, V.K. Newport, James R. “Jim” Newport, and Gary Newport; and one daughter, Kathryn L. Newport. She is survived by a daughter, Emma Cook of Seminole.
Olean O’Guinn
Funeral services for lifelong Wewoka resident Olean O’Guinn are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Wewoka with Rev. B.G. Renfro officiating. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary. O’Guinn died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 74. He was born on Sept. 24, 1926 in Wewoka to John and Anna O’Guinn. O’Guinn was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired after 30 years of service from Tinker Air Force Base. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Thirkield O’Guinn of Wewoka; two sons, Cleophus O’Guinn of Dublin, Calif., and Melvin J. O’Guinn of Shawnee; three brothers, Ulysses “Celie” O’Guinn, Delbert “Billy” O’Guinn, and Harold O’Guinn, all of Wewoka; two sisters, Dovie Walker of Toledo, Ohio, and Almeter Watts of Wewoka; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Ethel Sanders
Funeral services for Ethel E. Sanders, 84, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Avoca Church of Christ in Asher with Jerry McCorkle and Kenny Dickerson officiating. Burial is to be at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Sanders died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Sunset Estates of Tecumseh. She was born on Feb. 114, 1916 in Pauls Valley to George and Lily (Crawford) Chambers. Sanders graduated from Asher High School in 1932. She married Lloyd Sanders on July 6, 1933 in Macomb. Sanders was a homemaker and a member of the Avoca Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Woodrow Chambers; and two sisters, Jackie Martin and Adele Sanders. Sanders is survived by her husband of the home; one son, Kenneth Sanders of Tecumseh; three daughters, Linda Milburn of Tecumseh, Towana Gober of Bethel Acres, and Bobbie Palmer of Maud; three brothers, Bill Chambers of Houston, Texas, George Chambers of Kingston, and Stanley Chambers of Midwest City; and three sisters, Eythel Hart of Maud, Hazel LeFebvre of Seattle, Wash., and Mildred Huff of Shawnee. Other survivors include 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Her grandsons are scheduled to serve as casket bearers.
Carol ‘Jeanene’ Presley
Carol “Jeanene” (Strickland) Presley died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000 at Midwest City Regional Hospital at the age of 63. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud with Rev. Wayne Taylor officiating assisted by Revs. Tim Martin and Ellis Risenhoover. Burial is to be a Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Presley was born in Stratford on June 17, 1937 to Edward Leroy Strickland and Iris Fern (Eoff) Strickland. She attended school at Saint Louis, Okla. She married Bill Presley on Dec. 19, 1953 in Saint Louis, Okla. Presley was a member of the Maud Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father on Feb. 2, 1985 and her mother on July 19, 1974. Presley is survived by her husband of the home; two sons, Gary Presley of Healdton and Billy Presley of Maud; one daughter, Carla Long of Dale; one brother, Keith Strickland of Maud; two sisters, Sandra Ledbetter and Peggy Wade, both of Maud; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Casket bearers are listed as Mason Presley, Justin Kana, Scott Presley, Chad Presley, Joel Fletcher, and Tom Jackson. Honorary Casket bearers are Don Sullivan, Paul Lucy, Buck Day, and Dale Williams.
