Helen Shafer

Helen Marie Shafer, a Wewoka Nursing Center resident, died Thursday, at the age of 94. She was born to Henry Albert and Pearl (Dickson) Sroufel on Nov. 18, 1906 in Tom Beam, Texas. She was raised and educated in the Texas area. Helen married Tom Shafer in Independent, Kans. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wewoka where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Mary Vinsant; three brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her granddaughter, Dorothy Wallace of Wichita, Kans. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Rev. Herb Prater will officiate the services.

Millda Peavler

Funeral services for former Maud school teacher Millda W. (Sachse) Whitley Peavler are scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Maud. Rev. Ellis Risenhoover and Rev. Gene Teel will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery under the direction of Knight Funeral Home, Maud. Peavler died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at Shawnee Care Center at the age of 90. She was born to William Sachse and Rose Sachse in Shawnee on Feb. 19, 1911. She married Coy Kenneth Peavler on July 19, 1947 in Gainsville, Texas. She graduated from East Central University , and also attended Oklahoma Baptist University. Peavler was a school teacher retiring in the mid 1970’s, she taught school at Center Point, Moore, Milfay, Maud and El Paso, Texas. She was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church in Tecumseh, and St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Maud. Peavler was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, John Lee Whitley; one daughter, Betty Jo Whitley; her second husband, Coy K. Peavler; and one grandson. She is survived by one son, Robert Whitley, Pearson; four daughters, Ruth Banks, Irvin, Texas, Sally West, Houston, Texas, Sherry Hackett, Shawnee and Linda Drayton, Lake Charles, La.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Madeline Crouch

A private committal is planned for Wewoka Nursing Home resident Madeline AnnLou Crouch under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Crouch died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2001 at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 95. She was born to Bennett S. and Florence (Jackson) Bedford on April 4, 1906 in Paris, Texas. Crouch was reared and educated in the Antlers area. She also attended the Goodland Indian Academy and the St. Joseph Hospital for Nursing. She married Bob Crouch, and moved to Wewoka in the early 1930’s. Crouch worked for the Holdenville General Hospital retiring in 1970. She was the director of nurses at the Wewoka Hospital until they built the new hospital. Crouch then began working at a nursing home in Sulphur until retiring. She was a member of the Wewoka Golf Association in the early 50’s, playing and winning numerous women’s golf tournaments. Crouch was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church of Wewoka. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters; two brothers; and one stepson, Bob Lee Crouch. Crouch is survived by one daughter, Jean Williams, Antlers; one-stepdaughter, Melba Williams, Belustes, Ark.; and numerous grandchildren.

Betty Brown

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Betty Jane Brown are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stout Funeral Home Chapel in Wewoka. Rev. Dennis Eubanks will officiate the services. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Brown died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 76. She was born to John P. and Altha Mae (Butler) Sircy on Sep. 26, 1924 in Oil City. Brown was educated at Justice and Wewoka schools. She then made her home in South Gate, Calif. until 1947 when she moved back to the Wewoka area. She married Aurva Kee Brown on Sept. 10, 1940, in Las Vegas, Nev. Brown was a member of Divine Living Waters Church in Holdenville. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Brown is survived by three daughters, Vonda Coats, Cromwell, Betty Foster and Sandra Davis; three sons, Aurve Brown, Joe Brown, and David Brown, all of Wewoka; one brother, John P. Sircy, Wewoka; and one sister, Louiese Riley, Las Vegas, Nev.; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Gene Carpenter

Gene Carpenter, a longtime resident of Seminole county, passed away in his home in Butner of Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001. He was born in Cromwell to Ross M. and Hester A. Carpenter on Oct. 25, 1919. Gene was a rancher and Wewoka businessman for over 50 years. During World War II, he was a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army in the Pacific Theater and was assigned to the 305 Fighter Control Squadron. Gene served the Sam and Butner School districts as a school board member for 25 years. He married Goldie K. Eslinger on June 17, 61 years ago. She survives him of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Dennis Carpenter of Oklahoma City and Paul Carpenter of Cromwell; one daughter, Carolyn Thomas of Ada; three sisters, Juanita Main of McFarland, Calif., Rubene Clem of Mercede, Calif., and Neva June Weedman of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Curtis Carpenter, Colingo, Calif., and James Carpenter, McAlester; six grandchildren, Jill Carpenter, Chris Akkola, Clint Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter and Ross and Andrea Thomas; and two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Cody. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the Stout Funeral Home Chapel in Wewoka. Rev. Larry Chesser will officiate the services. Interment is scheduled to follow at Butner Cemetery in Butner under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka.

Edgar ‘Sonny’ Tucker

Funeral services for former Seminole County resident Edgar “Sonny” Tucker were scheduled for 10 a.m. this morning at the Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Sour Lake, Texas. A graveside service is scheduled for noon Saturday at El Reno Cemetery in El Reno. Tucker died Tuesday at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Tucker, Sour Lake; two sons, Mike Tucker and Matthew Tucker, both of Sour Lake; one brother, Milburn Tucker, Broken Bow; one sister, Imogene Replogle, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 568, Sour Lake, Texas, 77659.

Willa Mae Johnson

Funeral services for Konawa resident Willa Mae Johnson are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Pickard Chapel, Konawa. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home. Rev. Pam Shirk will officiate the service. Johnson died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at the age of 97. She was born to Sara Belle and Frank Oliver Baggett on July 23, 1904 in Konawa. She married Ray Allen Johnson on March 6, 1921 in Konawa. Johnson was a licensed practical nurse who lived in the Konawa area most of her life. She was a member of the Konawa Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband; and two brothers. She is survived by two sons, Ray A. Johnson, Jr., Hastings, Fla., and Larry Johnson, Konawa; two daughters, Mildred Owen, Midwest City, and Modena Balay, Ada; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

James Massey

Graveside services for Maud resident James “Jim” G. Massey are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Rev. Mike McCaulley will officiate the service. Massey died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001 at his home in Maud at the age of 62. He was born to Frank Massey and Edna (Brown) Massey in Garrison, W.Va., on July 22, 1939. Massey married Betty Joy Rumery on Sept. 22, 1973 in Mansfield, Ohio. He moved to Maud from Mansfield, Ohio in 1999, where worked as a purchasing agent for Lake Park Industries. Massey was a member of the St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Maud, and was a 32nd Degree Master Mason of the Masonic Lodge #106. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. Massey is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Mike Haas, Cripple Creek, Colo., and Steve Haas, Brookville, Wis.; four daughters, Yonna Dolan, Wanette, Kim Molsbee, Shawnee, Kecia Fergurson, Choctaw, and Sabra Harvey, Mansfield, Ohio; three brothers, Darrell Massey, Mansfield, Ohio, and Bob Massey and Johnny Massey both of Eastbank, W.Va.; one sister, Anne Bachelor, Ontario, Canada; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lucille Nickeson

Funeral services for Cromwell native Lucille Nickeson were held Saturday at the Turpin United Methodist Church in Turpin. Rev. Stanley Lehnert and Judy Barnes officiated the service. Interment followed at Liberal Cemetery, Liberal, Kan., under the direction of Miller Mortuary. Nickeson died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001 at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center at the age of 78. She was born to Carson W. and Ada P. Parker Moses in Cromwell on May 23, 1923. Nickeson graduated from the Varimin High School in 1942 and had worked in the shipyards in Richmond, Calif., during World War II. She moved to Turpin in 1946 and worked for the Duerson Brothers insurance company for 10 years. She married James T. Nickeson on June 1, 1946 in Bakersfield, Calif. Nickeson was a member of the Turpin United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, James, of the home; one daughter, Jane Headrick, Turpin; and three grandchildren.

Wanda Fox

Funeral services for Wewoka Native Wanda A. Fox are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Bill Merritt Memorial Chapel in Bethany. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill cemetery under the direction of Bill Merritt Funeral Home, Bethany. Fox died Monday, July 27, 2001 after a long illness. She was born to Leigh Edd and Irene Allred on Jan. 26, 1924 in Wewoka. The family moved to Oklahoma City where Fox attended Linwood, Taft, Classen and Putnam City Schools. Fox married Leo E. Fox on Nov. 8, 1944 and after World War II, they resided in Houston, before returning to Oklahoma City where they made their permanent home. She was a homemaker until 1964 when she began her career as a social worker for the Department of Human Services. Fox was a lifelong member of the Portland Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Edward L. Allred. Fox is survived by one son, Daniel E. Fox; one daughter, Kristi I. Fox; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Marion Crews

Graveside services for former longtime Seminole County resident Marion Ralph Crews were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove cemetery near Carney, under the direction of Park Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler. The Rev. Ronald Crews officiated the service. Crews died Monday, Aug. 29, 2001 after an extended illness. He was born to Isaac and Adela Crews on Oct. 26, 1919 in Golden. Crews was a Bowlegs High School graduate. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Coast Guard. Crews was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers. He is survived by his wife, Velma Gentry Crews, of the home; three sons, Rev. Ronald Crews, Morris, Steven Crews, Oklahoma City, and Gary Crews, Chandler; two sisters, Bernice Dawson, Richmond, Va., and Vera Eubanks, Paragould, Ark.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William Casto

A former photographer for The Seminole Producer William J. “Bill” Casto, died Thursday afternoon Aug. 23, 2001 at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. A Requieum Eucharist was held Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong, rector, presiding, assisted by Rev. Steven Mallory, deacon. Burial followed in the Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home. Born Sept. 3, 1925 in Tulsa, he was the son of Charles Franklin and Gula Cleo Edwards Casto. His first home was at Three Sands and during the first 10 years of his life he lived in several of the oil boom towns in the area. Casto graduated from Wolf High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre as a radar operator and later as a photographer. After his discharge he was a freelance photographer doing aerial mapping and worked in studios until being employed as a reporter and photographer for The Seminole Producer. He worked for the Ponca City News for more than 20 years in a similar position. Casto also did freelance work with photography and was published in area, regional and international publications. He was also employed by Conoco for a period of time. Casto and the former Evelyn J. Renick were married Sept. 24, 1971. He was active in the Seminole area Civil Air patrol as a pilot and had served as head of the Seminole Disaster Unit. Casto is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of the home; two sons, Joe D. Buck, Terre Haute, Ind., and Larry E. Buck, Ponca City.

Willis Curlee

Graveside services for Seminole resident Willis Harold “Bud” Curlee are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate the service. Curlee died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 77. He was born to Gus Curlee and Grace (Massey) Curlee on Feb. 25, 1924 in Centrahoma. Curlee grew up in Lane, and moved to Seminole 26 years ago from California. He was retired from Buford White Lumber Company in Shawnee. Curlee was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class in the U.S. Navy. Curlee was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bill Curlee; and one sister, Ina Conover. He is survived by two sons, Gene Curlee, Annapolis, Calif., and Steven Curlee, Ben Lomond, Calif; two daughters, Linda Hauso, Portola, Calif., and Glenda Twaddle, Branson, Mo; three sisters, Irene, Sarah, and Pauline; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
