Thomas Johnson

Former Seminole County resident Thomas J. Johnson, 52, died Friday, June 15, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center, Cherokee, Kan. Following his and family wishes he will be taken for cremation under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, Kan. Johnson was born Sept. 17, 1948 in Monett, Mo., to E.E. and Pansy Mae (Sells) Johnson. He married Janey Long on May 4, 1970 in Seminole, and was a long time resident of the area. Johnson worked as a warehouseman for Bowles School Supply and National Mills in Pittsburg, Kan. He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Tommy Dale Johnson; and sister, Betty Jo Johnson. Johnson is survived by his wife, Janey, of the home; one daughter, Michelle Wood, Uniontown, Kan.; five brothers, Everett Johnson, Hutchison, Kan., Bob Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz., Charles Johnson, Drumright, Cecil Johnson, Clinton, and John Johnson, Pittsburg, Kan.; one sister, Stella Caps-Prose; and two grandchildren.

Minnie McDoniel

Funeral services for Seminole resident Minnie Gertrude McDoniel are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chris Stinnett officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. McDoniel died Wednesday, June 13, at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole, at the age of 97. She was born to James Alexander Huskey and Martha Jane (Clark) Huskey in Strawberry, Ark. on June 8, 1904. She married Magness William McDoniel on Oct. 17, 1927, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1987. McDoniel was a homemaker, and a member of the Church of Christ, who loved Gardening and Flowers. She is preceded in death by her husband, and her parents. McDoniel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Margie McDoniel, Chickasha; her daughter and son-in-law, Minnie Lou and Andy Andrison, Seminole; 3 sisters, Mae Gray, Mooresville, N.C., Opal Walls, Memphis, Tenn., and Inez Neel, Cleveland, Miss.; five grandchildren, Jim Andrison, Mark Andrison, Bill Patrick McDoniel, Diana Jessee, and Mike McDoniel; and six great-grandchildren, Billy McDoniel, Ben McDoniel, Sean Jessee, Brad Jessee, Katie McDoniel, and Ross McDoniel. Casketbearers are listed as, Bill Patrick McDoniel, Mike McDoniel, Drew Jessee, Max Burnett, Bob Harber, and Syd Morgan.

Dent Davis

Funeral services for Seminole County resident Dent Davis are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Wewoka, with the Rev. Johnny Hinton officiating. Interment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka. Davis died Thursday at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 89. He was born to Joseph and Margaret (Tucker) Davis on Nov. 19, 1911, the tenth of twelve children in Kemp, Okla. Davis was drafted into the Navy in World War II and spent time in the South Pacific foe several months, returning home to west Texas after the war was over. He continued to farm in Texas until 1950. He then moved his family back to Oklahoma and went to work for Tinker Field. Davis retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1963 and spent much of the time thereafter raising cattle and other livestock on the family homeplace near Sasakwa. He joined the Church of Christ of Wewoka in 1972 and has been a faithful member since that time. Davis is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice; a daughter, Eva Elizabeth; five sisters and six brothers. He is survived by two sons, Leonard Davis, Oklahoma City, and Sammie Davis, Prague; two daughters, Wanda Mendenhall, Shawnee, and Barbara Rondeau, Holland, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-granchildren. Pallbearers will be Keith Davis, Randy Davis, Michael Davis, Tyler Davis, Steven Davis, and Dent Collier. Honorary bearers will be Wesley Mendenhall and Jason Collier.

James Ellis

Funeral services for former Seminole resident James Ellis are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary Chapel, 6934 S. Western, Oklahoma City. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Shawnee. Ellis was born Feb. 14. 1942 in Seminole to Ray and Bess Ellis. He was veldictorian of his senior class at Pleasant Grove and attended the University of Oklahoma on scholarship. He also served in the National Guard 45th Infantry during the Vietnam War. He worked at the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City from 1971 until his death. He married Lynnette Simmons in 1968. Ellis was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife; his mother; three sons, Phillip, Brian and Daniel; his brother, Kenneth Ellis; two sisters, Imogene McCartin and Dixie Byerly and many nephews and great-nephews.

Katy Moore

Katy Maybell (Starr) Moore of Eufaula and the mother of a Wewoka resident, died Sunday, June 10 at Muskogee Regional Hospital. She was 80. Moore was born July 12, 1920 in Cameron to Jack and Pearl May Starr. She was a lifetime member of Little Coweta Indian Baptist Church where she was the Women’s Adult Sunday School teacher, as well as the Sunday School teacher for beginner, primary, junior, and intermediate classes. She married Freeland Bud Moore in 1944. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Pearl Starr; husband, Freeland Bud Moore; one daughter, Sharon “Ginger” Mustin; one brother, Bob Starr; one sister, Bessie Shaver; two great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. Moore is survived by three sons, Bob Goad, Seattle, Wash., Johnny Kilgore, Eufaula, Mark Blevins-Moore, Ore.; five daughters, Mary Ann Zachary, Oklahoma City, Betty Jean White, Medford, Ore., Patricia Ann “Cookie” Sloan and Linda Cummings, both of Eufaula, Rickey Carol Postoak, Wewoka; four sisters, Doreen Spearman, Fredonia, Kan.; Bernice Rocha, Brighton, Colo.; Sarah Springer and Shirley Allen, both of McAlester; 28 grandcildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Pallbearers are Ronnie Hawkins, Adam Jones, Jimmy Corley, Rev. Gene Cook, Nathaniel “Peanut” Grayson and Daniel Deere. Honorary pallbearers are Curtis Postoak, Matthew Cummings , Doni Densmore, John Dominic, Steve Mustin, and Bobby Goad. Wake service will be held all Wednesday at Little Coweta Indian Baptist Church. Visitation will be until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Gregg Funeral Home and Tuesday evening until 4 p.m. Wednesday at the family residence.

Sandra Kaye Atyia

Sandra Kaye Thompson Atyia passed away at her home in Seminole on Tuesday evening, June 12, 2001, after a courageous battle with lymphoma cancer. Sandra was born to William Clyde Thompson and Mauzelle (Alcorn) Thompson Wallace in Seminole on June 6, 1939. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1957, and was a proud graduate of Gordon Cooper Technology Center’s first Licensed Practical Nursing class of 1970. She worked in the nursing profession at Seminole Hospital and for Dr. J.B. O’Keeffe for 27 years until retiring in 1998. She married Freid Atyia in Seminole of June 8, 1957, and they celebrated 44 years of marriage. To this union, four children were born. Sandra loved life and lived it to the fullest. She delighted in the holiday seasons and loved to decorate her home. Many area people will remember her for the huge Christmas exhibit that was displayed in her yard year after year. She was a member of Seminole’s First Baptist Church, Charter member of Seminole Hospice, a member of ESA Sorority, and was of the Choctaw heritage. She was preceeded in death by her parents, two brothers, Bill and Mike Thompson. She is survived by her husband, Freid, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Hammett and Pam Atyia and Mike and Sandra Atyia all of Seminole; daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy and Fred McKenzie of Tulsa and Tandi and Bruce Coates of Seminole; grandchildren, Curtis Lemmings of Oklahoma City; Nick and Libby Atyia of Shawnee; Derek Atyia, Kyle Atyia, Johnnie Barlow Atyia, Michael Bruce Coates, Garrett Coates and Caitlin Coates all of Seminole; Margo and Madeline McKenzie of Tulsa. Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Judy Thompson of McAlester; Cheryl Thompson of Marlow; Haney and Sonia Atyia of Midland, Texas; Zekeah and Dale Pease of Dallas, Texas; Norma and Bill Murray of Eagle Pass, Texas; Doug and Judy Atyia of Seminole; Shirlene and Henry Pratka and JoAnn and Floyd Howell of Prague; uncles and Aunt, D.I. and Grace Alcorn of Athens, Texas, and Jack Willis of Ponca City and host of nieces and nephews and friends. Services will be at the First Baptist Church in Seminole on Friday, June 15th at 10:00 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Kelvin Moseley and assisted by Nick Atyia, with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Paul White, Dr. Brendan O’Keeffe, Larry Minihan, Glen Siler, Thurman Edwards, Jerry Minihan. Honorary bearers, Hulett Edgmon, Jimmie Lynn Austin, John Humphrey, Larry Lloyd, Don Chesser, Henry Kimmel, and Bruce Robertson. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the First Baptist Church Falls Creek Building Fund, Hospice Center in Edmond or the American Cancer Society.

James Ritter

HOLDENVILLE-Funeral services for James E. Ritter, Holdenville, are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday at HudsonPhillips Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Vines officiating. Interment will follow at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home. Ritter died Thursday in Holdenville at the age of 60. He was born Sept. 6, 1940 in Paris, Texas to Dollie (Smith) and Albert Ritter. Ritter was raised in Vernon and Chillicothe in Wilbarger County, Texas. Retired from Haliburton, Ritter worked as a welder for 38 years. Ritter is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother He is survived by one son, James C. Ritter, Wewoka; two daughters, Lynn Sessions, Arlington, Texas, and Kasey Shaffer, Bethany; and eight grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ritter’s grandsons and nephews.

John Gentry Sr.

Wewoka resident John Ray Gentry Sr. died Thursday at the age of 44. Cremation services are scheduled under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Gentry was born on June 17, 1957 to Herman and Mary (Maloney) Gentry in Sacramento, Calif. He was reared and educated in Payette, Idaho. Gentry served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After the service he returned to Payette, where he worked several different occupations. He married Pamela Greene on Nov. 17, 1998 in Geneva, Ala. Gentry was a member of the Woodsman of the World, and the National Rifle Association and the Mormon Church. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Mutchler; and one daughter. Gentry is survived by his wife Pamela, of the home; his parents, Gene and Martha Campbell, Wewoka; one daughter, Tina Marie Gentry; three sons, Johnny Ray Gentry Jr., and David Carl Greene, both of the home, and Olaf Curtis Greene of Kentucky; one sister, Diana Herrington, Wewoka, two brothers, Robert Mutchler, and Bill Mutchler both of Wewoka.

Gladys Burleson

Funeral services for lifelong Wewoka resident Gladys Beaver Burleson are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the First Assembly of God Church, Wewoka, with Pastor Perry Justus officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home, Wewoka. Burleson died Wednesday at the age of 87. She was born on July 26, 1913 to James and Ida (Wilkins) Bales in Konawa where she was also reared and educated. She married Tillrie Beaver who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1960. She then married Walter Burleson who also died. Burleson is also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Nadine Jackson; four brothers; and one sister. She is survived by her two sons, Vernon Beaver, Oklahoma City, and Albert Beaver, Wewoka; one daughter, Wilma Smart, Wewoka; eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Dale Beaver, Steven Beaver, Mike Cox, Richard Smart, and David Smart.

Johnny Lynch

Seminole resident Johnny Lynch died Friday morning in an automobile accident at the age of 42. No services are planned, but viewing of Mr. Lynch is scheduled from noon Saturday until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 8 p.m. There will not be any further viewing after Sunday at 8.p.m.. He was born to Addie Dunn on October 6, 1958 in Seminole. Lynch attended schools in Pleasant Grove. He lived in Seminole until 1987 at which time he moved to Tulsa until 1994; then to Wyoming until 1997; and back to Seminole. Lynch married Deborah Rich on March 22, 1989 in Tulsa. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Glenpool. Lynch was a service technician for Natural Gas Compressors. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his mother, Addie Dunn, Chickasha; three sons, T.J., Seminole, Brandon Parker, Chanute, Kan.; and Preston Lynch, Seminole; four daughters, Johnna Lynch, Ft. Smith, Ark., Brandy Parker, Seminole, Tina Mize, Seminole, Jolleen Lynch, Okemah; and one grandchild.

Rickey Washington

Funeral services for Wewoka resident Rickey D. Washington are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Wewoka, with Rev. E. Bert officiating. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery under the direction of Myers Mortuary, Wewoka. Washington died Sunday at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 46. He was born to Fred and Dorothy Washington in Wewoka on June 9, 1954. Washington lived in Wewoka all his life, and was employed by Oakridge Nursing Home for seven years. He is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister. Washington is survived by two daughters, Teresa Griffin, Tulsa, and Kim Phillips, Shawnee; two sons, Lamar Phillips, Wewoka, and Terry Phillips, Seminole; two brothers, Nepoleon Washington, Oklahoma City, and Tyron Washington, Wewoka; six sisters, Ruthie Jean Barnett, Oklahoma City, Linda Washington, Tecumseh, Wanetta Berry, Shawnee, and Sandra Washington, Mechelle Washington, and Norvell Hytche, all of Wewoka. Pallbearers will be Russell Roberts, Ben Williams, David Madkins, Jeff Hamilton, Luther Liddell, and Andrew Marshall. Honorary bearers are Glen Shelton, Will Hamilton, Clyde Lewis, Billy Hill, Tommy D. Phillips, and Clayton Noble.

Bernie Watkins

Funeral services for Seminole resident Bernie D. Watkins were scheduled today at the Little Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at the Little Cemetery, under the direction of Baggerley South Funeral Home, Oklahoma City. Watkins was born on July 19, 1914 in Bearden to Weaver W. and Hattie (Bell) Watkins. He died Saturday in Seminole at the age of 86. Watkins married Gladys Ellis on July 16, 1938 in Okemah. He was a truck driver for Standard Oil Company, and after he retired, the couple moved to Oklahoma City where they both worked at the South Oklahoma City YMCA. Watkins was a resident of Oklahoma City until 1999 when he moved to Seminole. He was a member of the Capital Hill Assembly of God Church. Watkins was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gladys; one brother, Delmer Watkins and one sister, Lula Downs. He is survived by one son, Jerry Watkins, Seminole; one sister, Laura Reed, Pea Ridge, Ark.; and two grandchildren.
