Graveside services for lifelong Seminole County resident, Billy Joe Pierce are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Wolf Cemetery with Rev. Rick Harrison officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Pierce was born Oct. 24, 1927 in Wolf to Joe Pierce and Leva (Burgess) Pierce. He married Minnie Wood on April 26, 1996 in Gainsville, Texas. Pierce was a member of the Bowlegs First Baptist Church. He was an oilfield worker and retired in 1990. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Christine Pierce in 1985; one grandson, Jeffery Shane Pierce in 1984; one granddaughter, Jenny Whiteley in 1976; and four sisters. He is survived by his wife of the home; five sons, Jerry Clower, Bobby Clower, Phillip Clower, Johnny Pierce, and Joe Pierce, all of Seminole; three daughters, Billie Maxine Leonard of Eufaula, Vanessa Pierce of Whitney, Texas, and Laura Renea Pierce of Seminole; and five stepchildren. Other survivors include three brothers, Leslie Pierce of Taft, Calif., James W. Pierce of Macomb, and Guy R. Pierce of Konawa; two sisters, Margie Bleeker of Shellknob, Ark, and Joann Ring of Shawnee; 21 grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Beulah Wheeler
Beulah Margaret Wheeler, a longtime Seminole resident, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Pioneer Nursing Home at the age of 91. Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Wheeler was born on Feb. 23, 1909 in Gas City, Kan. to William Henry Hackler and Minnie (Koehler) Hackler. She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. Wheeler moved to Seminole from Rock Island, Okla. 52 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Wheeler; her parents; and one brother. Wheeler is survived by one son, Bill Wheeler of Seminole; and four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The family asks that those desiring to make memorials may do so to the charity of their choice.
Katherine Kay
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident Katherine Camilla (Yancey) Kay are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles Troglin officiating. Burial is to be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Kay died Thursday, April 19, 2001 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole at the age of 79. She was born Oct. 24, 1921 in Ada to Richard Alonzo Yancey and Lillie Lorene (Ross) Yancey. She married Arthur Lee Kay on Dec. 25, 1940 in Shawnee. Kay was a member of Coney Island Tabernacle of Bowlegs. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; twos sisters; and one infant brother. Kay is survived by her husband of the home; one son, Arthur Glenn Kay of Livingston, Texas; one daughter, Camilla Harris of Eufaula; six brothers, Howard Yancey of Bowlegs, Carl Yancey, Vernon Yancey, Don Yancey, Bob Yancey, and Clint Yancey, all of Seminole; two sisters, Juanita Frazier of Bowlegs, and Mary Allen of Wewoka; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Craig Sandlin
Funeral services for former Seminole business man, Craig Sandlin, are scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Fellowship Baptist Church in Eupora, Miss. with Revs. Jimmy Latham and Howard Davis officiating. Interment is to be at North Union Cemetery in Webster County, Miss. under the direction of Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora. He will lie in state at the church form 1-2 p.m. tomorrow. Sandlin died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at Windcrest Nursing Home in Fredericksburg, Texas at the age of 97. He was born in Alabama on Oct. 3, 1903. Sandlin was the retired coowner and operator of Craig’s Hamburger Inn in Seminole. He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Sandlin of Bellefontaine, Miss., and Sandra Sabel of Fredericksburg, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Dorothy Johnson
Graveside services for Seminole resident Dorothy Marie Johnson are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Tecumseh Mission Cemetery with Rev. Kenny Myers officiating. Services will be under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Johnson died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 80. She was born on June 16, 1920 in Holdenville to Joe Stacey Chaney and Edna (McCalip) Chaney. She married Roy Jackson Owens in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1964. She then married Gene Johnson in 1966. He also preceded her in death in 1989. Johnson retired in 1969 as a food service worker at Porterville State Hospital in Porterville, Calif. She moved from Porterville to Seminole in 1990. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by one son, Roy Owens of Earlsboro; two daughters Mary Jones of Seminole, and Loretta Tompkins of Bakersfield; one brother, Billy Ray Chaney of Wasco, Calif.; one sister, Louise Witt of Porterville, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Grace Miller
Grace A. Miller, a Wewoka resident, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 57. Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Glenn Rest Cemetery in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. Services will be under the directions of Summers Funeral Home of Mountain Home, Idaho. Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole is in charge of local arrangements. Viewing will be held at Swearingen Funeral Home until 7 p.m. tonight. Miller was born Dec. 27, 1943 in Glenns Ferry, Idaho of David and Dorothy (Buck) Miller. She was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Church in Seminole. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, David, Robert, and Wallace. Miller is survived by seven sisters, Dorothy Stevison of Evanston, Wyo., Martha Belcher of Meridian, Idaho, Mary Lou Plew of Shoshone, Idaho, Catherine McCown of Seminole, Violet Bailey of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Doris Daplis of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Georgia Miller of Meridian, Idaho; four brothers, John Miller and William Miller, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; Morris Miller of St. George, Utah; and Joseph Miller of Meridian, Idaho.
Tenzie Huff
Funeral services for Konawa resident Tenzie Lois Huff are scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Pickard Chapel with Rev. Mitch Williams officiating. Burial is to be at Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Konawa. Huff died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at the age of 70. She was born Feb.25, 1931 in Konawa to Willie (Smith) and Lee Blackwood. She married Wallace Huff on Feb. 9, 1951 at Konawa. Huff was a homemaker and seamstress who spent her entire life in the Konawa and Sasakwa area. She was preceded in death by her father; and one brother, Virgil Blackwood. Huff is survived by her husband of the home; four sons, Eugene Earl Huff of Choctaw, Joe Darrell Huff of Macomb, Timothy Terrell Huff of Stillwater, and Gerald Beecher Huff of Tecumseh; two daughters, Cynthia Larue Carpenter of Konawa, and Phoebe Lynne Harris of Sasakwa; one brother, Joe Andy Blackwood of Konawa; and one sister, Evalyn Maxwell of Konawa; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Dorothy ‘Bea’ Dees
Graveside services for Seminole resident Dorothy Beatrice “Bea” Dees are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. She died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Shawnee Care Center at the age of 86. Dees was born May 21, 1914 in Corsicana, Texas to Alonzo and Annie Jones. She was a homemaker and worked as a clerk at J.C. Penney’s for many years. Dees was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion of Shawnee. She had been a resident of Shawnee for the past 40 years. Dees was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Alonzo and Cafton Jones. She is survived by her husband, Wilbern “Tip” Dees of the home; two daughters, LeKatha Fay Dees of Oklahoma City, and Caroline Helen Cole of California; and one sister, Francis “Frankie” Bevels of Guymon.
Harold Davidson
Harold Haskell Davidson, a Wewoka resident, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at the age of 81. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Hilltop Freewill Baptist Church in Wewoka with C.L. Thomas and Russell Ryker officiating. Interment will be at Tate Mountain Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. Davidson was born Nov. 8, 1919 in Sasakwa to Claude and Flora (Luster) Davidson. He was reared in the Sasakwa and Raymondsville, Texas areas. He attended Rockie Point, Vamoosa, and Sasakwa schools. In 1941, Davidson enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was discharged from the service on Aug. 12, 1945. Davidson married Leoma Catlett on July 2, 1945 in Norman. The couple made their home in the Justice area. He was a member of the Hilltop Freewill Baptist Church in Wewoka and served as a Justice School Board member for 21 years. Davidson retired as a carpenter in 1975. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Calvin Davidson. Davidson is survived by his wife of the home; one son, David Eugene Davidson of Prague; one daughter, Deborah Ann Madron of Holdenville; one sister, Zula Babb of Wewoka; four grandsons; and two great-grandsons. Pallbearers include Steve Catlett, Leslie Landsdown, Ray Babb, Don Babb, Ricky Babb, and Tommy Babb.
Bertha Sherwood
Funeral services for Maud resident Bertha Sherwood are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Danny Factor officiating. Burial is to be in Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Sherwood died Monday, April 16, 2001 at Shawnee Regional Hospital at the age of 81. She was born in Sasakwa on Oct. 29, 1919 to Willie and Mary (Pilot) Douglas. She married Albert Sherwood in Seminole in 1954. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1963. Sherwood was member of the Maud Trinity Baptist Church and a homemaker. She moved to Maud from Tecumseh in 1979. Also preceding her in death was her parents; two daughters, Shirley A. Cully and Ruby Baez; and one son, Roger Cully. She is survived by two sons Dwayne Cully of Newalla, and Ed Sherwood of Bethel; one daughter, Martha Sherwood of Tecumseh; three brothers, Andrew Douglas of Shawnee, O.B. Douglas of Wewoka, and Booker T. Douglas of Seminole; three sisters, Corene White and Emma Factor, both of Shawnee, and Lilly Bea Harjo of Arkansas City, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be J.W. Miner, Willard Harjo, Philip Cully, Joel Wilson, Edward Sherwood, and Jason Coker.
Mayda Factor
Mayda J. Factor, a Wewoka Nursing Center resident, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the age of 81. Mayda was born on Nov. 10, 1919 to Charlie and Roxie (Echols) Houser in Royal, Ark. where they remained until Mayda reached the age of four. She was reared and educated in the Sam’s School area, and graduated from Wewoka High School in 1937. On Aug. 20, 1938 in Wewoka, Mayda married William “Bill” Factor Jr. In 1957, they moved to the Los Angeles, Calif. area until returning to Wewoka in 1975. Upon arrival, Mayda retired. She was a lifelong member of the Mission Home Baptist Church in Wewoka. She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Houser; her parents, Jim and Roxie Keys; her husband, William “Bill” Factor Jr.; four brothers, Roy Houser, Pete Keys, Luther Keys, and Milton Keys; and one sister, Lois Sullivan. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Cook of The Woodlands, Texas; one son, Ronnie Factor of Aspen, Colo.; one sister, Ernestene Payne of Wewoka; three brothers, W.K. Houser of Ulysses, Kan., Cliffton Houser of Wewoka, and Leslie Houser of Denison, Texas; three grandchildren, Dee Ann Webb of Oak Ridge, Texas, Denver Cook of Denver, Colo., and Danielle Jacks of Richmond, Texas; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Mission Home Baptist Church in Wewoka. Pastors Mack Pearcy and Delmar Hume will officiate the services. Pallbearers include Michael Groathaus, Stanley Tate, Burney Tate, Dan Houser, Butch Houser, and Judd Sawyer. Interment will be at the Factor Family Cemetery north of Wewoka under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.
Velma Prewitt
Graveside services for Sasakwa native Velma Neely Prewitt were held at 10 a.m. today at Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Pickard Funeral Home of Konawa. She died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Ada at the age of 79. Prewitt was born in Sasakwa on Oct. 7, 1921 to Francis (Foran) Neely and Jess Neely. She married Noel George Prewitt in Ada on Aug. 11, 1938. He preceded her in death. Prewitt was a beautician who spent most of her life in the Sasakwa area and 16 years in Ada. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Earl, John, and Arlie Neely; and one sister, Alene “Tootsie” Thomas. She is survived by one son, Noel Gene Prewitt; and one sister, Mildred Birdwell.
James Nelson
James Austin Nelson, a Seminole Native, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at the age of 69. He was born Aug. 21,1932 in Seminole to Oca and Dave Nelson. Nelson married Evelyn Charlene Belveal in Bentonville, Ark. on Aug. 25, 1958. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Stella Rowe. Nelson is survived by his wife, Charlene, of Los Lunas, N.M.; three sons, Jimmy Nelson of Dallas, Texas, John Nelson of Los Lunas, N.M., and Jeffrey Nelson, also of Dallas; one sister, Pearl Lemmings of Seminole; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
