Charles Adams

Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident Charles Wayne Adams are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Seminole with Rev. David Karges officiating. Burial is to be in Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Adams died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Shawnee Regional Hospital at the age of 61. He was born on Dec. 28, 1939 in Holdenville to Robert Burnie Adams and Mable Lenora (Coston) Adams. Adams married Dorothy Toney on April 5, 1958 in Seminole. He was owner of Adams Body Shop in Seminole and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Seminole. Adams was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of India Shriners, Eastern Star, Trico Clowns, and the Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Adams; one sister, Glenda Posly; and one brother, Darrell Davis. Adams is survived by his wife, Dorothy Adams of the home; his mother, Mable Boatman of Seminole; one son, Ronnie Adams of Wolf; two daughters, Saundra Rice of Seminole, and Donna Adams of Maud; one brother Winford Adams of Seminole; two sisters, Norma Bullock of Hominy, and Carol Douglas of Perryton, Texas; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be Ronnie Adams, Charlie Rice, Nick Rice, Chris Rice, Brian Adams, and Gary Winkcompleck. Honorary bearers are to be Aaron Adams, Dillon Adams, Frank Webb, Carl Griggs, and George Higdon.

Cecil Felton

Cecil Dewey Felton died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Central Oklahoma Christian Home in Oklahoma City. He was 88 years of age. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole with Dr. James Sill officiating. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Felton was born in Byars on Nov. 16, 1912 to Samuel Ulysses Felton and Anne (Bunyard) Felton. He married Dorothy M. Clark on Sept. 16, 1938 in Ada. The couple moved to Seminole from California in 1948. He was a welder with Noble Drilling and later owned and operated Felton’s Welding until his retirement. Felton was a member of the First Christian Church in Seminole. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Horace and Anthony Felton; and two sisters, Elsie Lamm and Syble Coffman. Felton is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Felton, of the home; one son, Dewey R. Felton of Shawnee; one daughter, Rejeana Brown of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Mellie Johnson of Oklahoma City, and Mable Padgham of Overland, Kan.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Billy Cordell

Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident Billy Joe Cordell Sr. are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Harold Turner officiating. Burial is to be in Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Cordell died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at his home at the age of 66. He was born in Yeager on Nov. 9, 1934 to William Harrison Cordell and Eva Sarah (Page) Cordell. Cordell moved from Tator Hill (Spaulding) to the Seminole area 65 years ago. He married Ramona Lee Byford on Aug. 3, 1957 in Seminole. Cordell was a unit operator for Seminole Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces having served four years in the Navy. Cordell was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; five sisters; and one grandson, Bradley Scot Lovett. He is survived by his wife of the home; three sons, Robbie K. Cordell of Holdenville, Ricky L. Cordell and Billy Joe Cordell Jr., both of Seminole; one daughter, Toni Lovett of Seminole; one sister, Lois Kirk of Seminole; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be Robbie K. Cordell, Billy Joe Cordell Jr., Stacy Cooper, Rick Lovett Jr., Jerry Crawford, and Bobby Barnes. Honorary bearers are Ricky Cordell, Rick Lovett Sr., Gary Don Cordell, Billy Barnes, and Andy Robinson.

Stephanie Lively

Stephanie Dawn Lively of Pauls Valley passed away April 11, 2001 at the age of 38. She was born in Cleburne, Texas on Feb. 21, 1963 to Romey and Doris (Harris) Lively. She lived many years in Wewoka before moving to Pauls Valley. While living in Wewoka, she attend the Church of Christ. Stephanie was one of God’s Special Angels and resided with his other Angels at the Southern Resource Center in Pauls Valley. She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Harris Trammell. She is survived by her parents, Romey and Sally Lively of Wewoka; sisters and brother-in-law, Mechelle and Billy Bryant of Wewoka, Stacy Barnhart of Georgetown, Ohio, and Julie Wyche of Sand Springs; her brother and sister-in-law, Bryan and Laura Lively of Milwaukee, Ore.; and two nieces, Ashli Bryant Williams of Stillwater, and Brooklyn Renee Barnhart of Georgetown, Ohio. She is also survived by her Special family and tireless caregivers at Southern Resource Center in Pauls Valley. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001 in Vamoosa Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Stout Funeral Home in Wewoka.

Sara Atchison

Graveside services for Sara Jane Atchison are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Little Cemetery with Seminole Order of Eastern Star officiating. Services will be under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Atchison died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the age of 79. She was born on Jan. 17, 1922 in Ada to Hallive Flud and Mattie (Henderson) Flud. She married John Paris Atchison on June 12, 1948 in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1998. Following her husband's retirement as a pest control advisor in 1993, the couple relocated to Seminole. Atchison was a housewife and homemaker. She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star in California and Oklahoma. In addition to her husband, Atchison was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister. She is survived by three sons, Grayson Atchison of Seminole, Robert Atchison of Pixley, Calif., and Richard Atchison of Bakersfield, Calif.; one brother, Melvin Flud of Shafter, Calif.; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth ‘Bess’ Marquis

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Elizabeth “Bess” Marquis, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Revs. Robert Hightower and Carl Whitfield officiating. The casket will be open until service time. It will not be re-opened after the service. Burial is to be at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Marquis died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 73. She was born Dec. 7, 1927 in Boley to James E. and May (Hunt) Morrison. Marquis, who lived most of her life in Seminole, was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar D. Marquis. Marquis is survived by three sons, Jimmy Marquis of Atoka, Carroll Marquis of Wolf, and Rick Marquis of Seminole; four daughters, Shirley Nunnelley of Seminole, Donna Nail of Eagle River, Alaska, JoAnn Morphis of Cromwell, and Kay Ramsey of Tecumseh. Other survivors include three brothers, Fred and James Morrison of Seminole, and Richard Morrison of Madill; three sisters, Carolyn Haworth and Betty Kean, both of Seminole, and Cory Lee Hunt of Shawnee; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be Heath Nunnelley, Robert Johnson, Keith Douthit, Johnny Morphis, Darrell Williams, and Gervis Morphis. Honorary bearers are Rocky Nail and Carey Nunnelley.

Roy Fowler

Roy Lee Fowler, a longtime Seminole resident, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 89. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roger Brewer officiating. Burial is to be in Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Fowler was born on May 15, 1911 in Carter to Zeck and Nona Bell (Dension) Fowler. He married Hazel Marie Gillespie on June 11, 1935 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Fowler was a farmer and construction worker and moved to Seminole from Wichita Falls, Texas 55 years ago. His favorite hobbies after retiring was sewing quilts and working on lawn mowers. Anyone who knew him, knew him as a self-taught horse trader and a man that loved to coon hunt. Fowler was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Grant, on Feb. 15, 1991; and one grandson, Ronnie Grant, on April 24, 1980. He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Freddie Fowler of Wichita Falls, Texas; one daughter, Mary Gambill of Wichita Falls, Texas; two brothers, Alferd Fowler of Iowa Park, Texas, and Jim “Red” Fowler of Ada; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be James Gillespie, Edward Gillespie, Billy Gillespie, Mark Morris, and Charles Johnson.

Brittney Wesley

Funeral services for Brittney Kay Wesley were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at the Central Church of Christ in Ada with Scott Young officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery in Madill under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home of Ada. Wesley died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of seven months. She was born September 7, 2000 to Siah Lee and Alana Kay Taylor Wesley of Ada. She is survived by her parents of the home; one brother, Brayden Wesley of the home; grandparents, Ron and Mary Ann Taylor of Ada, and Andrew and Shirley Wesley of Holdenville; great-grandparents, Emma Ruth Wesley of Wewoka, Esther Colby of Madill, and Don and Maxine Ayers of Madill; and a great-great-grandmother, Thelma Ketchum of Oklahoma City.

James ‘Jim’ Pemberton

James D. “Jim” Pemberton, a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away April 8 2001, Palm Sunday, at a Texas hospital. Jim was 76 years old and had previously been a longtime Seminole resident. At age 15, Jim joined the United States Army and served in the First Cavalry, spending four years overseas. While in service to his country, Jim received the Asiatic-pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star; the EAME Campaign Medal with three Bronze Starts, the American Defense Service Medal, and a medal for good conduct. Jim became a Christian in 1973 at the First Baptist Church in Healdton, Okla. He was a member of the Padre Island Baptist Church in Corpus Christi. Jim worked for BJ-Hughes Services for 31 years. After retiring in 1986, he made his home in Corpus Christi. Jim is survived by his wife, Dorothy Fisher Pemberton, They were happily married for 28 years, seven months, and 10 days. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Pemberton of Seminole.; and his sister, Willetta Sparks of Ft. Gibson.; five children, Ron, Larry, Rick, Vicki, and Gayla; 25 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jim will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who know him. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with his grandson, Ron Fisher, officiating. Casket Bearers will be Ron Fisher, Rick Pemberton, John Bateman, Jerry Reed, Jimmy Fisher, and Johnny Taylor. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Mary Carter

Mary Ruth Carter, the sister of a Wewoka resident, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Heritage Village Nursing Center in Holdenville at the age of 69. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at First Baptist Church on Holdenville with Rev. Meredith Robinson officiating. Interment was in Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville. Carter was born on Aug. 29, 1931 in Holdenville to Ben and Phebe (Stevens) Austin. She was a 1950 graduate of Holdenville High School and lived all her life in Holdenville. She married Oliver Carter on Dec. 23, 1960 in Holdenville. Carter was a homemaker and enjoyed working outside with her flowers as well as cooking and baking. She is survived by her husband of the home; one daughter, Kim Carter of Holdenville; one son, Timothy Carter of Holdenville; one stepdaughter, Jeannie Christianberry of Rolland; one stepson, Doug Carter of Rolland; one sister, Lucretia Bradley of Wewoka; 12 step grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Lawton Carter, Doug Carter, Max Carter, Loyd Carter, Jerry Christianberry, and Doltan Webster. Honorary pallbearers were all coffee drinkers and friends from Bobbie’s Restaurant and June’s Old Tyme Diner.

Lindell Goodnight

Funeral services for Lindell Dwayne Goodnight are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Church of Christ of Tecumseh with Gerd Fecht and Bob Anderson officiating. Burial is to be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee under the direction of Knight Funeral Home of Maud. Goodnight died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at his home in St. Louis, Okla. at the age of 63. He had been a Pottawatomie County resident for 34 years. Goodnight was born on Dec. 14, 1937 in Wanette to John Lemuel Goodnight and Nina Mae (Henry) Goodnight. He married Zelda Hickman on Oct. 16, 1959 in Wanette. Goodnight was the owner of Consolidated Oil Production and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Goodnight was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Dennis Goodnight of Oklahoma City, and Jeff Goodnight of Seminole; one daughter, Kelli Rinish of St. Louis, Okla.; four brothers; Gerald Goodnight of Newcastle, Mike Goodnight of St. Louis, Okla., Tim Goodnight of Konawa, and Kevin Goodnight of Skiatook; one sister, Carolyn Cross of North Carolina; and four grandchildren.

Herbert Rushing

Graveside services for Herbert Hadley Rushing, 90, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mannford with Rev. John Borrego officiating. Services are under the direction of Oliver-Whisenhunt Funeral Services of Tulsa. He was born on April 13, 1910 in Rushing, Ark. Rushing married Marguerite Johannson in Claremore. He owned and operated a delivery service. Rushing enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, baseball, and spending time at the Mannford senior citizens’ center. In the 1930s, he was a semiprofessional baseball pitcher in the Shawnee area. He moved to Seminole in November 1999. Rushing was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite; an infant son, Herbert Hadley Rushing Jr.; two brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by one son, Robert Rushing of Seminole; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Expressions of sympathy made be made to either the Seminole or Mannford senior citizens’ centers.
