Guindol Faye “Guin” West, a longtime Seminole County resident, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at her home in Seminole at the age of 70. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel wit Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial is to be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. West was born on Aug. 20, 1930 in Blue Mountain, Ark. to Jack Sandlin and Freda (Smith) Sandlin. She married Joe West on June 27, 1948 in Seminole. He preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1993. West was owner / operator of Treasure House Pawn Shop in Seminole from 1980 to 1995. She also worked at Pat’s Café. She was a member of First Christian Church and a resident of Seminole County since 1959. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, J.W. Sandlin; and a sister, Betty Ward. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Debbie and Wayne King of Midwest City, and Cathy Moreland of Pauls Valley; five grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Nathan Hill, Amanda and Stephen Lewis, Shannon and Robin Powers, Lesley King, and Brad King; and four great-grandchildren, Logan Powers, Nicole Hill, Ashleigh Hill, and Shawnna Lewis.
Barney Fixico
Graveside services for former Wewoka resident Barney Scipio Fixico were held 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka with Rev. Leon Postoak officiating. Fixico died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at his home in Oklahoma City at the age of 63. He was born on Jan. 23, 1937 to Kelly and Lovina (Harjo) Fixico. He was raised in the Wewoka area and attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan. and graduated in 1955. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and later joined the U.S. Air Force serving in Vietnam. Following his service in Vietnam, he worked as a laborer for many years until his retirement in the early 1980s. He was a member of Middle Creek No. 2 Church of Holdenville and was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America. Fixico was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Benjamin Fixico; and one sister, Flora Emarthela. He is survived by one sister, Wynema Williams of McAlester; one brother, Billy Fixico of Holdenville; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Vernon Richards
Vernon Lowell Richards, a native of Maud, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, in Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa at the age of 63. Richards was born Aug. 5, 1937 in Maud to George Lester and Molly Mildred Richards. Richards and his wife, Jo Teten Richards, were serving as coordinators for Oklahoma volunteers in Malawi, Africa at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Clara Ann Hale; and one granddaughter, Racheal Michelle Richards. Survivors include is wife, Jo Teten Richards; two sons, Vernon Lowell Richards, Jr. and Steven Carl Richards; six brothers and sisters, Leon Richards of Haysville, Kan., Randy Richards of Hennessey, Donna Ebers of Hennessey, Elnora Williams of Tecumseh, Loetta Nadeau of Earlsboro, and Linda Cliff of Modesto, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Orla Jones
Funeral services for former Seminole resident, Orla Lea Jones, 87, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven in Oklahoma City. She died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Midwest City Regional Hospital. Jones was born Sept. 15, 1913 in Okay. She met her husband, Thomas B. Jones, while both were students at Seminole High School. He preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her sister Lorraine Valentine. She is survived by two sons, Robert and Thomas Jones; two brothers, Jack and C.E. Briery; one sister, Velva Rogers.
Bill Heard
Bill Heard, a lifelong Seminole County resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at Shawnee Regional Hospital at the age of 71. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Vamoosa Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Hudson, Bro. Kenneth Romines, and Rev. Michael Vanlandingham officiating. Burial is to be in Lone Dove Cemetery east of Vamoosa under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Heard was born Oct. 8, 1929 in Sasakwa to James Till Heard and Elsie (Cooley) Heard. He married Melva Ligon on Sept. 2, 1950 in Van Buren, Ark. Heard was a roustabout and pumper for Chevron. He retired in 1990. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a Private First Class from Aug. 15, 1946 to Dec. 10, 1947. Heard was affiliated with Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Konawa. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and one granddaughter. He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Randy Heard of Wolf; one daughter, Connie Ashby of Vamoosa; four brothers, Ivan and Doc Heard, both of Wolf, James Heard of Wewoka; and J.T. Heard of Vamoosa; four sisters, Polly Hill of Picket, Susie Kuestersteffen of Konawa, Fay Kinsey of Antlers, and May Mullins of Konawa; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Casket bearers are to be his nephews.
Dr. Roy King
Dr. Roy King, M.D. died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 in Norman Regional Hospital at the age of 63. Funeral services were held today at Hudson-Phillips Chapel in Holdenville with Rev. Wade Burleson officiating. Committal services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Fort Gibson national Cemetery with Rev. Gary Bowden officiating. Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville. He was born on Nov. 13, 1937 in Muskogee to Alton D. King and Edna Mable (White) King. King grew up in the oil patch of Barnsdall and attended school there. On June 1, 1958, he married Beverly Cabe in Pawhuska. King graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1965. He later became a member of the military serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. From 1968 through 1974, he served in the U.S. Air Force and from 1974 through 1990, he was a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard serving as State Surgeon. King retired from his Holdenville medical office in 1994, but continued to practice medicine in Konawa on a parttime basis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry E. King. King is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Roy Daryl King of Shawnee, and Ronald David King of Stillwater; and four grandchildren.
Peggy Hale
Funeral services for the sister of a Seminole resident, Peggy Louise Hale, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Rider of Tulsa officiating. Interment is to be in Stubblefield Cemetery in Hughes County under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Hale died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at Misson Hill Hospital in Shawnee at the age of 56. Hale was born on Oct. 12, 1944 in Holdenville to Bert Green and Mollie (Roberts) Green. She was a homemaker and a home provider for the elderly. Hale was a member of God’s Glory Temple in Seminole and TLC Mental Health Group. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jan Green and Jimmy Green; and an infant brother, Buddy Green. Hale is survived by nine children, Penny Tipton of Paoli, Lisa Hale of Moore, Bart Hale of Holdenville, Robert Hale of Shawnee, Robbie Wheeler of Edmond, Jerry Hale of Moore, Terri Ring of Shawnee, Jimmy Hale of Shawnee, and Jamie Hale of Kingsville, Texas; brothers and sisters, Johnnie and Joe Gatewood, Edna Conley, and L.G. Green, all of Holdenville, and Dean and George Horn of Seminole; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and family members. Pall bearers are to be Burton Hale, Bart Hale, Robert Hale, Jerry Hale, Jimmy Hale, and Gene Harper. Honorary bearers are Smokey Tipton, Hershel Ring, Kent Wheeler, and Michael Lawless. Leroy Parrish
Graveside services for lifelong Seminole County resident Leroy J. Parrish are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Whitfield is to officiate the services. Parrish died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Seminole Medical Center at the age of 75. He was born on May 21, 1925 in Bald Hill to Lowen Jackson Parrish and Ethel Maud (Cunningham) Parrish. He married Ruth Parrish on June 6, 1956 in Shawnee. Parrish was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Gulf Oil Company. He is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Jimmy Jordan and Johnny Jordan, both of Maud; one daughter, Carole VanMeter of Ada; one brother, Charley Parrish of Wilson; three sisters, Dorothy Springer of Seminole, and Eldean and Patricia of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Leslie ‘Les’ Jones
Funeral services for Leslie Raymond “Les” Jones, 82, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Karges officiating. Burial is to be at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. There will be a family visitation on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home. Jones died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 at his home. He was born on Dec. 31, 1918 in Cass City, Mich. To Frank Alvin Jones and Harriett H (Hendrick) Jones. He moved to Seminole in 1945 from Michigan. Jones married Thyra Mae “Tommie” (Knowles) Jones on Aug. 28, 1946 in Seminole. She preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 1997. He was the owner of Jones Jewelry in Seminole for 50 years and was one of Oklahoma’s last master watch makers. Jones was a veteran of World War II having served as a Staff Sgt. with the U.S. Marine Corps from May 12, 1943 to Dec. 6, 1945. He was a member of United Presbyterian U.S.A., Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, National Rifle Association, and Seminole Masonic Lodge. Also preceding him in death was his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his sister, Frances Smith of Clawson, Mich.; and a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and other family members and friends. William ‘Frank’ Bussey
Funeral services for lifelong Maud resident William Franklin “Frank” Bussey are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Maud with Revs. Carl Whitfield and Glen Penze officiating. Interment is to be in Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home. Bussey died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 at his home in Maud at the age of 85. He was born on June 10, 1915 in Maud to George William Bussey and Viola (Ward) Bussey. Bussey married Anna Lucile Works on Sept. 22, 1938 in Maud. She preceded him in death on June 19, 1981. He later married Madge Marie Ray on July 30, 1991 in Shawnee. Bussey was a pipeliner for Stallings Construction until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Maud and a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his first wife, Bussey was preceded in death by one son, Jim Bussey on July 3, 1989; his parents; one sister; and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Madge, of the home; three sons, Gene Bussey of Diaz, Ark., David Bussey of Seminole, and Mike Bussey of Maud; three daughters, Nora “Sister” Brenner of Kalispell, Mont., Erma Taff and Sandie Joplin, both of Maud; one brother, John Bussey of Durant; four sisters, Lula Mathis of Wichita Falls, Texas, Alvira Johnson of California, Lorene Starkey of Konawa, and Letha Westmorlan of Spiro; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four stepsons; and one stepdaughter.
Hetti Garrett
Funeral services for former Seminole County resident Hetti Orel (Parks) Garrett are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Herb Prater officiating. Interment is scheduled to be in the Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home of Wewoka. Garrett died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 in the Wewoka Nursing Center at the age of 86. She was born June 30, 1914 in Marietta to Stanley and Leola (Rose) Parks. Garrett attended Spaulding schools and had lived in Hughes and Seminole Counties all of her life. She was a lifelong member of the Midway Baptist Church and was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Holdenville. She married W.A. “Algie” Garrett in February 1935. Garrett was preceded in death by her husband on March 5, 1993; her parents; two brothers; three sisters; and a granddaughter, Sheila Horton. She is survived by one son, Doyle Gene Garrett of Holdenville; two daughters, Linda Carl of Electra, Texas, and Brenda Garrett of Wewoka; two sisters, Oberia Pitchlynn of Wewoka, and Ruby Robbins of Ft. Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are to be Richard Harvill, Bill Harvill, Sam Barns, James Osborn, Thurman Pitchlynn, and Gary Pitchlynn. Honorary pallbearers are Harmon Parks and Bob Bowen.
Larry Stockton
Funeral services for the father of a Wewoka resident were held Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Jerry Dowell officiating. Burial followed in Dale Cemetery. Stockton died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his McLoud home at the age of 74. He was born Oct. 1, 1926 in Talihina to Elmer and Velma (Jones) Stockton. He married Dorothy Smith on Nov. 12, 1949 in Ft. Smith, Ark. She preceded him in death on Feb. 13, 1995. Stockton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II. He attended Oscar Rose College in the mid 1970s. Stockton worked for Oklahoma Gas and Electric and Tinker Air Force Base, where he later became a production scheduler. He was a member of Church of Christ in McLoud. Stockton is survived by his daughter, Sandra King of Muldrow; two sons, Keith Stockton of Lexington, and Fred Stockton of Wewoka; a brother, Kenneth Stockton of Purcell; four sisters, Blanche Cooper and Loretta Patton, both of Dale, Shirley Semple of McLoud and Patsy Kensinger of Springfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
