Funeral services for Seminole native Dorothy E. Gilbert are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Emmett Taylor officiating. Burial is to be in Resthaven Memorial Park. She died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in an Oklahoma City hospital. Gilbert was born in Seminole on Sept. 28, 1927 to Houston and Lillian Rosilee (Monday) Neale. She was a graduate of Seminole High School and a member of the First church of the Nazarene.. She married Kenneth E. Gilbert in November 1969 in Oklahoma City. Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, George M. Neale. She is survived by her husband of Shawnee; two sisters, Mary Jane Brown and Lillian Vaughn, both of Oklahoma City; one brother, Alvin Neal of St. Joseph, Mo.; a stepson, Randell Gilbert of California; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Calvin Hampton
Wewoka native Calvin E. Hampton of Oklahoma City died Jan. 29, 2001 at the age of 76. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Mayfair Church of Christ with burial following at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. He was born Nov. 12, 1924 in Wewoka to Columbus Franklin and Era Mae Hampton. Hampton was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Clyde Widney; an infant daughter, Karen Sue, and his wife, Dee Hampton. He is survived by his wife, Mary Hampton; one son, Kirk Hampton; one brother, Max Hampton; one stepdaughter, Pam Mangus; one stepson, Doug Bowman; two grandsons; and four step-grandsons.
Josephine Bradshaw
Funeral services for former Seminole County resident Josephine Bradshaw are scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Baptist Church in Wewoka with Rev. E.G. Bert officiating. Interment is to be at Westwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Myers Mortuary. She died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 in Los Angeles, Calif. at the age of 88. She was a retired domestic worker and was affiliated with Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Bradshaw was born Oct. 7, 1912 to Alec Davis and Martha J. Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bradshaw; her parents; two brothers; and three sisters. Bradshaw is survived by two brothers, Rev. A.D. Jackson of Tulsa, and Rev. Aaron Jackson of Ft. Worth, Texas; two sisters, Fannie Thompson of Wewoka, and Roselma Figures of Los Angeles, Calif.
Euell Dyer
Former Wewoka resident Euell Wayne Dyer of Edmond died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 in the V.A. Medical Center in Norman at the age of 82. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Church of Christ with internment at Little Cemetery under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. He was born on May 14, 1918 in Murray, Ky. Dyer was raised in the Murray area and attended Faxon School in Calloway County after graduation. He attended college at Lexington for three years. He entered into the Army Air Corps on Nov. 23, 1943 and served as a pilot during World War II. He was later discharged on Jan. 19, 1945. Dyer graduated from Murray State University with an agriculture teaching degree. He was with the first group to bring fescue to Oklahoma. He later founded Cadco Aluminum Seamless Siding Company with his partner, Gene Cole in Great Falls, Va. Dyer was a member of the Great Falls Church of Christ and served as a Missionary to India in 1983. He preached three sermons daily and baptized in Bush County at night. He retired in 1984 from Cadco and moved to Oklahoma. Dyer is survived by his wife, Alta Dyer, of the home; three sons, Jerry Wayne Dyer of Fairborn, Ohio, and Kenneth Dale Dyer and Thomas Carroll Dyer, both of Sterling, Va.; one daughter, Sharon Kay Taylor of North Liberty, Iowa; five sisters, Ruby Herndon and Sadie Ragsdale, both of Murray, Ky., Linda Drake of Florida, and Hazel Berkley and Rose Coleman, both of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Don Dyer of Parris, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Walter Lena
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole County resident Walter “Knock-Knee” Lena are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sand Creek Baptist Church with Revs. Houston Tiger and Bill Barnett officiating. Burial is to be at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Wake services are set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Lena will lie in state at Swearingen Funeral Home until 4 p.m. Friday at which time he will be moved to Sand Creek Baptist Church. He died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at Shawnee Care Center at the age of 81. Lena was born on Dec. 24, 1919 to Lillie Lena and Lucy (Reed) Lena. He was a welder for Hildebrand and Son until his retirement in 1982. Lena was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Newman Lena; one sister, Marie Long; and one granddaughter, Anna Marie Lena. He is survived by his wife, Stella (Barnett) Lena of the home; five sons, Louie Lena of Oklahoma City, Dean Lena of Midwest City, Leon Lena of Phoenix, Ariz., Benny Lena and Mark Lena, both of Shawnee, and Tony Lens; three daughters, Shirley McBride of Muskogee, Linda Lena of New Lima, and Kahleetah Williams of Seminole. Other survivors include two brothers, Pete Lena of Wewoka, and Russell Valedez of Oklahoma City; five sisters, Irene Freeman of Tulsa, Eula Mae Robinson of Holdenville, Mabel Ward of Seminole, Freddie Lena of Wewoka, and Peggy Mahoney of Oklahoma City; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Debra Reed
Funeral services for Debra Lynn Carter Reed are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Galilee Baptist Temple of Praise and Worship, 338 Russell Avenue in Seminole with Rev. Earlis G. Bert officiating and Rev. Clive Cochran, Sr. assisting. Interment is to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Myers Mortuary of Wewoka. She died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at the age of 45 years. Reed was born on May 29, 1955 in Seminole. She was the third child of Elfreeda Carter and Willie Carter, Sr. She received her education from the Lima Elementary Public School and graduated from New Lima High School in 1973. After graduating from high school, she was employed with Blue Bell (Wrangler) in Seminole for over five years. At the time of her death, she had been employed by General Motors in Oklahoma City for over 21 years. She was united in marriage to Robert Reed on April 25, 1987. Through that union was born Robert Lorenzo Reed on July 5, 1990 and Roberta Lorraine Reed on May 25, 1992. Several months ago, she was united with the Ethopian Reformed Copic Church of Christ where she celebrated her life with God while happily celebrating the Sabbath day. Debra knew that the safest place to be was in the will of the Most High. She chartered her course and set sail. Debra was baptized in the Messiah’s name in Holiness and returned to the spiritual teachings of her youth. A beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and friend, she sought truth and found her place in this Universe. She was preceded in death by her father. Debra is survived by her two children, Robert Reed and Roberta Reed, both of Seminole; her mother, Elfreeda Carter of Seminole; three brothers, Willie Carter, Jr. of Seminole, Roger Carter of Wichita, Kan., and Irvin Carter of Seminole; seven sisters, Kaye Yarbrough of Colonial Heights, Va., Rebecca Brown and Iva Carter, both of Seminole, Ethel Thomas of Oklahoma City, Dolores Pittman of Tampa, Fla., LaDonna Carter of Oklahoma City, and Roberts Phillips of Seminole. Other survivors include her uncles and aunts, Geraldine Island and husband, Woordow of Seminole, James Hill of Oklahoma City, Blanton Henry Hill, Jr. of Seminole, Thelmarie Hill of Oklahoma City, and Joe Andrews of Los Angeles, Calif.; nephews and nieces, Brian, Broc, Karla, Vashawnda, Bruce, and Jerome Carter, Christopher, Rachel, Whitney, Jacqueline, Brianna, Lori, Kaylyn, Charles, and Abram Thomas, Alexis, Zarria, and Terry Phillips, Earl “EJ” Yarbrough, and Gabriel Pittman; and a host of in-laws, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends. J.R. Edney
Funeral services with military honors for Seminole native, J.R. Edney, 72, were held Tuesday at Riverview Baptist Church in Bixby with Pastor Phil Sallee officiating. Interment followed the services at Bixby Cemetery under the direction of Leonard and Marker Funeral Home of Bixby. He died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 in Tulsa. Edney was born on Aug. 3, 1928 in Seminole to Noel Newton and Lela Fern (Irish) Edney. He married Mildred R. Floyd on Dec. 31, 1948 in Ada. Edney lived in many different communities during his life. As a young man, he lived in Okmulgee. He was pound to have served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during World War II and later during the Korean Conflict. He spent three years living in Hawaii during this time. Edney later moved to Kansas City where he spent 17 years living and working as a printing pressman. He took a break of about a year and lived in the Grand Lake area where he did a lot of fishing an noodling for catfish. Edney then moved to Shawnee where he worked again as a pressman. He then became interested in property management and real estate and was active in both at Yukon and Fayetteville, Ark. before retiring in 1996 and moving to Glenpool to be near his family. He was a member of the Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. He is remembered as an incredible handyman that loved fishing and noodling, gardening and being around people. Edney was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and Junior Edney; and one sister, Wanda McKee. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Patricia Clay and Janine Mendoza, both of Bixby; one son, Jerry Robert Edney of Olathe, Kan.; two sisters, Violet Jones of San Diego, Calif., and Pauline Cook of Midwest City; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Alma Ham
Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Alma Ham are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Revs. Nathan Malone and Doyle Gadberry officiating. Burial is to be at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Ham died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at Pioneer Nursing Home at the age of 96. Ham was born Sept. 18, 1904 in Maud to Henry Sherman Hopson and Lou (Northcott) Hopson. She married Jim Brown on July 1, 1922. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1974. She then married M.B. Ham in 1982 who preceded her in death in 1991. Ham was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and several brothers and sisters. Ham is survived by her sister, Dessie Hopson of Seminole; and several nieces and nephews.
Ivan Mendinghall
Graveside services for Seminole resident Ivan Ray Mendinghall were held Saturday at Hennepin Cemetery with Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. He died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Purcell Hospital at the age of 61. He was born on Dec. 8, 1939 in Yale to Otto and Bessie (Tennell) Mendinghall. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mendinghall was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Ronnie Mendinghall. He is survived by his mother, Bessie Jones of Davis; his wife, Judy Mendinghall of Norman; six sisters, Evelyn Sue Smith of Seminole, Patricia Climer of Wewoka, Sandra Johnson of Oklahoma City, Jackie Edmondson of Davis, Ladonna Presgrove of Davis, and Sheila Brubaker of Davis. Also surviving him are three brothers, John Mendinghall of Bowlegs, James Mendinghall of Duncan, and Warren Alan Mendinghall of Davis; one daughter, Rhawni Mendinghall of Albuquerque, N.M.; four sons, Scott, Steve, Michael, and Robbie Mendinghall; and several grandchildren. Pallbearers were his brothers and nephews.
Eula Floyd
Eula Floyd died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole at the age of 93. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Doyle Long officiating. Interment is to be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. She was born on July 19, 1907 in Earlsboro to Job and Lula Battle. She married Lonnie Floyd and was a housekeeper and evangelist. Floyd was affiliated with the Church of the Living God. She loved to travel and work in her garden. Floyd was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, McCoy Battle; and one grandson, Mack Ernest Battle. She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Leslie Battle of Seminole; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Casket bearers are listed as Robert Foxx, Alonzo Newton, Jason Shannon, Marvin Keesee. Acknowledgements are to be given by Willie Mae Saunders.
Lillie Harjo
Funeral services for Wewoka resident Lillie May “Curly” Walters Harjo were held Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Sasakwa. Revs. Houston Tiger and Franklin Harjo officiated the services. Interment followed at the Goate Family Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Stout Funeral Home. She died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Baptist Integris Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 58. Harjo was born on Sept. 14, 1942 in Talahina to Frank Walters, Sr. and Susie (Leitka) Walters. She was raised in Seminole and Hughes County areas where she attended Benidick schools. Pastor T.J. Fixico baptized her on Sept. 1, 1996. She later joined Rock Springs Baptist Church on Nov. 24, 1997 and became a Women’s Leader on April 31, 1999. She made her residence in Wewoka where she married Richard Harjo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 2001. Also preceding her in death were her father in 1984; two brothers, Rusty Walters in 1985, and Apler (Habon) Walters in 1999; one grandson, Sims Country Hicks; and one great-grandson, Avery Dewayne Harjo. She is survived by her mother of the home; four daughters, Sharon Hicks, Rebecca Fleming, Shelia Leitka and Cassandra Harjo, all of Wewoka; three sons, Simon Larney of Bowlegs, Roy Larney of Oklahoma City, and Thomas Harjo, Jr. of Wewoka; two sisters, Betsy Harjo and Vivian Washington, both of Wewoka; six brothers, Oscar Walters of Okemah, Leo Tiger of Seminole, Leon McPerryman of Cromwell, Louis Walters of Haydonville, Frank Walters of Holdenville, and Jessie Long of Holdenville; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends. Wake services were held Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 At the Stout Funeral Home Chapel. Pallbearers were Greg Poafpybitty, Bill Spain, Ernie McPerryman, Leon Bruner, Leo Tiger II, Toby Hulbutta, Eric Thlocco, and Wilson Tiger. All of her grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.
Evelyn Elliott
Funeral services for longtime Seminole County resident Evelyn Z. Elliott are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jason Yarbrough officiating. Burial is to be at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Elliott died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 66. She was born on Aug. 12, 1934 to Shird Merriman and Lucy Pearl (Winkle) Merriman. Elliott was a homemaker and worked at Wal-Mart for 10 years before retiring in 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant daughter; one sister, Dorothy Johnston; one brother, Carl Lee Merriman; and one infant brother. Elliott is survived by five sons, Gary Elliott and Kenny Elliott, both of Seminole, Darrell Elliott of Konawa, Larry Elliott of Weatherford, and Donny Elliott of Flowermound, Texas; one daughter, Peggy Roulston of Shawnee; four brothers, Arlin Merriman of Yakima, Wash., Wayne Merriman of Calif., Gene Merriman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dean Merriman of Oak View, Calif.; four sisters, Claretta Norman of Konawa, Vada Norman of Seminole, Mildred Lancaster of Sasakwa, and Elva Phillps of Seminole. Other survivors include nine grandchildren, Amy Elmore, Gary Elliott, Jeremy Elliott, Derek Elliott, Chance Elliott, Kendra Elliott, Zachary Elliott, Shannon Elliott, and Griffin Elliott; one great-granddaughter, Alissa Elliott; and a host of other family and friends. Edith Kathleen Howell
Edith Kathleen Howell, longtime Seminole resident, died Friday at a Tulsa Hospital. She was born April 19, 1918, near Golden, Oklahoma, to Toy and Ninevah (Edwards) Standridge and was married to John Howell on December 24, 1933. The Howells managed Seminole Municipal Airport from 1966 through 1989. The Mayor declared December 14, 1989 as “John and Edith Howell Day” in Seminole to commemorate their retirement. Mrs. Howell has lived in Tulsa for the past several years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband John, who died on May 29, 1991. Survivors include her son, Jerry Howell of Tulsa; a grandson, Doug of Toronto, Canada; and three sisters, Madge Fite of Marietta, Georgia, Juanita Gore of Mena, Arkansas, and Beatrice Pool of Danville, Arkansas. Graveside services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole. Rev. Robert Cocke will officiate at the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
