Funeral services for former Seminole resident, J. P. Bennett are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, Shawnee.
He died June 23, 2003, at the age of 72 in Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City.
He was born June 8, 1931, in Seminole to Levi Cody Bennett and Mamie (Chaffin) Bennett.
He was a graduate of Prairie Valley High School.
He had worked as a welder and retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1994.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 and was stationed in Korea at that time.
He married Phyllis (Ring) in Seminole on Jan. 23. 1954.
He attended the First Baptist Church of Harrah.
His parents; one brother, Gene Bennett; two sisters, Lois Motte and Clara Presley preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Bennett of the home; two children, Renee Bennett of Harrah and Darrel Bennett of Dunedin, Fla.; two brothers; Ray Bennett of Wynnewood and Dean Bennett of Seminole; two sisters, Willa Mae Cox of Coalinga, Calif. and Betty Romberg of Shawnee; two grandchildren; in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Officiating the services will be Rev. Randy Slack.
Interment will follow in the Little Cemetery under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home, Shawnee.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated the American Diabetes Association as appropriate for memorial contributions at P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720.
Joe Brown Bennett
Interment for Joe Brown Bennett, SFC U.S. Army, retired were scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Fort Sill National Cemetery
He died Oct. 11, 2003, at his home in Oklahoma City.
He was born Aug. 4, 1941 in Ada to Lt. Col. Joe D. and Frances Brown Bennett.
He was the great grandson of Gov. John Fl Brown, the last absolute Chief in the Seminole Nation.
Bennett attended Bacone College in Muskogee and graduated from UCO in Edmond.
Before employment at Tinker AFB, his military career included two tours of duty in Germany and one in Vietnam.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner, and a member of the Elks Lodge # 417.
After the loss of his eye sight, he began a partnership with his guide dog, Fenney, and they volunteered their time to school children and demonstrated the ability of the guide dog to aid in the independence of the visually impaired.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe D. and his brother John F. Bennet.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judith; his daughter, Jennifer Morrell; one granddaughter; and his mother, Frances Bennett of Oklahoma City.
Bertha Bierd
Funeral services for former Seminole resident Bertha M. Bierd are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday in the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole.
Rev. Burl Mackey will officiate.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Bierd died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at the Stroud Health Center.
She was born to Walter Marshall and Mary Alice (Leach) Crouch on Oct. 6, 1908 near Stroud.
She and Frank Bierd were married on Nov. 28, 1931 at the First Baptist Church in Bristow, and the couple lived in the Earlsboro, Carr City, and Seminole area most of their married life.
Bierd became a Christian at the Carr City Baptist Church in 1940, and was a member of the Church, teaching age groups from nursery through the young people’s departments over the years.
Most of those years were served teaching in the First Baptist Church of Seminole.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Frank Bierd; two sisters; three brothers; and two grandchildren.
Bierd is survived by one sister, Mrs. L.E. Waggoner, Levelland, Texas; two children, Jimmy Bierd, Stroud, and Gail McCraw, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Tom Bierd, Jimmy Bierd, Scott McCraw, Mike McCraw, Philip Quinn, Gary Quinn, Keith Bierd, and Bobby Bierd.
Georgia Biggers
Funeral services for Georgia Ann Biggers are scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church.
Rev. Beverly Cook will officiate.
Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman, Texas.
Biggers died Friday, March 21, 2003 at the ate of 91.
She was born in Holdenville in 1911 and lived in the Pampa, Texas area for 41 years before moving to Spearman.
She was married to Cecil Biggers in 1933.
She was a telephone operator for 16 years A.T. & T. She worked for C.R. Anthony clothing for over 25 years before retiring in 1987.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Pampa.
She is survived by one son, Cecil R. Biggers of Spearman; one sister, Florida Belle Surgnier of Ada, two granddaughters, and one great-grandson.
She was precede in death by her husband, Cecil Biggers in 1933.
The family requests memorials to be sent to Central Baptist Church Nursery Ministries in Pampa, Texas or Faith Lutheran Church in Spearman.
Louisa Billie
Funeral services for Seminole County native Louisa Harjo Billie are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church, south of Wewoka.
Revs. Houston Tiger and Sandy Harjo will officiate.
Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka.
Billie died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 at the age of 79.
She was born to Sundae Harjo and Velma Cosar Harjo on Aug. 24, 1924.
Billie attended Limestone School and also lived in and around Seminole County until 1997 when she moved to Tulsa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph Billie; three sisters, Abbie Harjo, Imogene Harjo and Fannie Harjo; one son-in-law, Daniel Starr; one daughter-in-law, Sally Wolf; and four grandchildren, Bradley Billie, Eastman Billie, infant grandaughter, and Yvett Hulbutta.
Billie is survived by one daughter, Nell Starr and her children, Terry, Michael, Laquita, and David Starr, all of Wewoka; three sons, George Hulbutta and his son Allen, both of Seminole, Lee Moses and his children, Lee, Otis, and Crystal Moses, all of Tulsa, and John Billie of Cushing and his children, John of Henryetta, Joseph of Alabama, Lawanna of Meeker, Stina of Oklahoma City, and Alisha of Germany; one sister, Naomi Jacobs, Oklahoma City; three brothers, Richmond Harjo, Seminole, and John Harjo and Luther Harjo, both of Tulsa; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Grey Tiger, Jimmy Tiger, Benny Tiger, Jason Tiger, Joe Jacobs and Oscar Bunner.
Honorary bearers will be Billie’s grandsons.
Gladys Black
Funeral services for former longtime Seminole resident Gladys Black are were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church.
Minister David Karges was set to officiate. He was to be assisted by Minister Bruce Lewis.
Interment was to follow at Resthaven Memorial Garden under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home of Eunice, N.M.
Black died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2003 in Hobbs, N.M. at the age of 99.
She was born Dec. 12, 1903 in Cedar County, Mo.
She married Rockford L. Black on Dec. 24, 1923 in Keystone.
Black was a resident of Seminole for 69 years.
She moved to Hobbs, N.M. in 2002.
She was an active member of the Seminole First United Methodist Church since 1950.
Black was an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Group and a charter member of the Wedding Ring Sunday School Class.
She is survived by one son, Don Black of Weatherford; one daughter, Peggy Harris of Hobbs, N.M., one brother, John Strader of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Harvey Black
Funeral services for Seminole resident Harvey Ervin "Pete" Black, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home Chapel in Pauls Valley.
Doug Arnold will officiate the services.
Interment will follow at the Whitebead Cemetery in Pauls Valley, under the direction of the Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
Black died Monday, March 3, 2003 at his home in Seminole at the age of 90.
He was born to John and Ida Mae (Hawkins) Black on Dec. 4, 1912 in Cement.
The Pauls Valley and Paoli area was his childhood home, and following his father’s death, he lived with his aunt Martha and uncle Will Hawkins in Western Oklahoma.
In the 1930’s, Black moved to Wanette where he worked for his uncle Ralph Black at Cunningham’s Filling Station and hauled cattle and hogs to the Stockyards in Oklahoma City.
While in Wanette, he met Molly Lucille Jackson.
The couple were married on May 23, 1936 in Konawa, and made Wanette their home for the next 10 years.
On July 4, 1946, the couple moved to Oklahoma City where Black went to work for the M&M Super Service for nearly 22 years. thus
In 1967, Black bought the wrecker service from M&M Super Service, thus founding the M&M Wrecker Service.
Black continued to operate the wrecker service until his retirement in March of 1982.
In 1983, Black moved to Seminole County where he raised cattle and enjoyed a working retirement.
Black was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, in 1972; his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.
He is survived by one son, Ralph Black, Seminole; one brother, A.C. Black of California; one sister, Mary June Hardy of Colorado; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
