Services Held for Accident Victim
Funeral services for Howard Lee Southerland, father-in-law of Seminole City Manager Steve Saxon were held Wednesday morning at the Downtown Pentecostal Church in Shawnee.
Southerland died Friday, March 14, 2003 at the age of 61, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Ada.
His wife, Patsy Southerland was also injured in the accident, and was listed in serious condition at OU Medical Center this morning.
Mr. Southerland’s services were officiated by Rev. Ron Baldridge.
Burial followed in Dale Cemetery, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home Service.
He was born to Lena Lee Pyle Southerland and Ora Southerland on April 23, 1941 in Summer, Mo.
His family moved to Oklahoma in 1943.
Southerland graduated from Meeker High School in 1959, and lived in Dale until 1966, when he moved to Tecumseh.
On June 30, 1962, Southerland married Patsy "Pat" Ann (Troutman) Southerland.
Southerland was retired from Tinker Air Force Base.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald Gene Southerland; and one brother, George Southerland.
Southerland is survived by his wife, Pat Southerland, of the home; two daughters, LeeAnn Washburn, Harrah, and Lisa Dawn Saxon, Seminole; three sisters, Rosemary Dugan, Prague, Evelyn Chinnery, Independence, Mo., and Lois Jean Earlywine, Smithville, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
Ruth Southern
Graveside services for lifelong Maud resident Ruth Southern are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cummings Cemetery in Maud.
Services will be under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home of Maud.
Rev. Roy Robertson will officiate.
Southern died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the Colonial Estates Nursing Home in Shawnee at the age of 85.
She was born to Everett Drumright and Maude E. (Roadlander) Drumright on July 7, 1917.
Southern married Willis Virgil "Bronk" Southern Sr., on July 3, 1936 in Oklahoma City.
She was a homemaker, and was affiliated with the Assembly of God Church.
Southern was very active with the Maud Senior Citizens until her health began to fail.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willis, on April 8, 1998; two sons, Bobby Gene Southern on March 8, 1940, and Virgil "Jay" Southern, Jr., on Aug. 29, 1990; two brothers; and one sister.
Southern is survived by one brother, Bernard Drumright, Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Seth Southern, St. Louis, Cindy Southern Bell, Maud, and Maurene Lytle, Oklahoma City; and eight great-grandchildren.
Aurelia A. Spann
Funeral services for former Seminole County resident, Aurelia A. Spann were scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in Purcell.
She died July 18, 2003, at the age of 95 in Norman Regional Hospital, Norman.
She was born March 19, 1908 in Magazine, Ark. to William Thomas and Ella V. Williams Biggs.
She lived in this area for 65 years, coming here from Oklahoma City.
She married Julius M. Spann on Sept. 1, 1938, near Staley.
They lived in Maysville until 1988, when they moved to Lindsay.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Her favorite hobby was crocheting, making an afghan for each of her children and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church at Purcell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius; one sister, Vera Biggs; four brothers, Eldon, Eldridge, Elgin and Hubert Biggs.
She is survived by one son, Raymond E. Biggs and Nancy of Abilene, Texas; three daughters, Margaret Cacy and Vic of Lindsay, Julia Henson and Johnny of Seminole, Sue Clark and Ray of Comanche; one brother, Ted Biggs and Georgia of Tulsa; one sister, Evelyn Mullins and Bill of Midwest City; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Spann of Oklahoma City and Ilene Spann of Calif.; one brother-in-law, Byron Spann and Kathryn of Noble; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Elder Mike Hughes will be officiating the service.
Interment will follow in the Maysville Cemetery under the direction of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville.
Irene Spencer
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole resident, Irene Jones Spencer are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 at the Hitchitee United Methodist Church with Revs. Mike Harjo and Ted Underwood officiating.
A Wake is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home under the direction of the Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
Spencer died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the age of 83 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
She was born in Seminole on Jan. 1, 1920, to Sam Jones Sr. and Lilly (Alexander) Jones.
She married Silas Spencer Sr. who preceded her in death on March 6, 1982.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the Hitchitee United Methodist Church.
Spencer was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Leslie and Rex Spencer; one daughter, Nellie Spencer; one brother, Sam Jones; and one grandson, Shane Spencer.
She is survived by four sons, Silas Spencer Jr. of Tulsa, Bill Spencer of Kelleyville, Edward Spencer and Bobby Jack Spencer, both of Seminole; one daughter, Ina Spencer of Seminole; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Maurice Spencer, Timothy Cloud, Eric Spencer, Yoney Spencer, Shawn Wilde and Paige White.
Honorary Bearers will be J.C. Simpson, Willie Frank Haney and Ronald Scott.
John W. Sprowl
Graveside services for Seminole County resident, John W. Sprowl are scheduled for 10:30 Monday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka.
He died Aug 1, 2003, at the age of 82 at his home in Newalla.
He was born on April 30, 1921, in Well Tannery, Pa. to Earnest and Ada Burden Sprowl.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He served in England for three years and flew a B-25 medium bomber from 1943-1945.
He loved the lake and deer hunting.
He was employed at the Tinker AFB, then went to the FAA where he retired.
He was married to Melba Norman Sprowl for 21 1/2 years and lead a happy life.
He is survived by his wife, Melba of the home; his children, Leann and Tammy; stepchildren, Norma and Debbie; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; one sister, Anna Mae and two brothers, Dale and Don.
Officiating the service will be Rev. Wesley Martin.
Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka.
Glenn Smith
Funeral services for lifelong Seminole resident, Glenn Smith are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 2 at the Church of Christ at Little under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
Rusty Dawson will officiate.
Interment will follow at Little Cemetery, north of Seminole.
He died Aug. 30, 2003, at the age of 82, at his home in Seminole.
He was born April 4, 1921 at Little to Edward P. Smith and Ethel (Jarvis) Smith.
He was married to Dorothy L. (Collins) Smith on April 3, 1948 in Edmond.
He ran a dairy for several years and was also a rancher and farmer.
He was a member of the Church of Christ at Little, a delegate for Farmers Union Association. and was former president of the Seminole County Cattle Association.
He was also active in the Strother volunteer fire department and the Seminole County Conservation Services.
His parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Smith of the home; two daughters, Lynda Sims of Seminole and Karen Luce of Flower Mound, Texas; three sons, Glen Wayne Smith of Edmond, Vance E. Schwab of Yukon, and Tony Schwab of The Woodlands, Texas; one brother, Thomas Smith of Stratford; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Casket bearers are Scott Luce, Brian Luce, Josh Smith, Michael Haskins, Chris Custard and Coy Sims.
Honorary bearers are Milo Foreman, Howard Byerly, Jeff Davis, Dick Harper and Harold Parsons.
David Stafford
Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident, David Ray Stafford of Bowlegs are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Bowlegs Assembly of God Church with Rev. Roy Robertson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
He died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the age of 54 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Stafford was born Nov. 26, 1948, in Seminole to Bryant Stafford and Nellie Mae (Thatcher) Stafford.
He was a fiber optic utility line-drilling tech for D&H Drilling.
Stafford was a graduate of Bowlegs High School and attended the Bowlegs Assembly of God Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl Stafford.
He is survived by two sons, David Stafford and Adam Stafford, both of Wewoka; one daughter, Melissa Stafford of Norman; three brothers, Don Stafford of Tulsa, Clifford Stafford of Bowlegs and Jerry Stafford of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Shirley Stafford and Vicki Presley, both of Bowlegs; and two grandchildren.
Close friends and nephews will be casket bearers.
