Private memorial services for former longtime Seminole County resident, Colbert Jackson Burris, Oklahoma City, were held Tuesday, Jan. 20 under the direction of Vondel Smith Funeral Home.
The service was held in southeast Oklahoma at Blue River, where he fished when he was young.
Burris died Jan. 15, 2004, at the age of 78.
He was born Aug. 14, 1925, to Minabel and H.H. Burris I.
Burris served his country proudly during World War II as a medical technician in the United States Navy.
He married Wanda Colbert in 1947 and after raising their chileren in Wewoka, the couple moved to Oklahoma City.
He was also proud of his heritage as a member of he Chickasaw-Choctaw Indian Nation.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William Calvin Burris; and one grandchild, Colbert Jason Burris.
He is survived by his wife Wanda of 56 years; his sons, Barry Burris of Oklahoma City and Michael Burris and wife, Bobbie of Talequah; daughters, Kay Caswell and husband, Ben of Hollis and Carol Wood and husband Gary of Midwest City; one brother, H.H. Burris II of Ardmore; sisters, Betty Fowler, Pat McCullom and Caroline Curry, all of Tishomingo, Rosemary Clark and Annabelle Easterwood of Spring, Texas; grandchildren, Haley Paige Baxter, Courtney James Burris and Cory Daniel Burris, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Clo Etta Burrow
Graveside services for Seminole County native, Clo Etta (Cunningham) Burrow of Tyron, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 26 at the Tryon Cemetery in Tryon with Rev. Ted Gibson officiating.
Services are under the direction of the Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
Burrow died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the age of 61 in Seminole.
She was born July 22, 1942, in Wetumka to Tommy Clo Cunningham and Goldie (Martin) Cunningham.
She grew up in Wewoka, Cromwell and the Wetumka area and moved to Tryon in 1964.
She was married to Max Burrow on Nov. 26, 1964, (Thanksgiving Day) in Cromwell.
He was a homemaker and loved to work with and raise animals.
She loved her pet cat.
She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, visiting her friends, raising vegetables and traveling.
She worked for a veterinary clinic for four years.
She attended Christian Union Church in Tryon since 1964.
He is survived by her husband, Max Burrow of the home; mother, Goldie Cunningham of Wewoka; Daughter, Sherry Bolene of Stillwater; sisters, Mary Kennedy of Moore, Peggy Kuzminski of Petersburg, Va., Shirley Chadick of Seminole and Nancy Joslin of Wewoka; and grandchildren.
Pauline Butler
Funeral services for Seminole native, Pauline (Fixico) Butler of Okmulgee are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan 16, at Hillabee Baptist Church in Hanna, officiated by Revs. Malcom Tiger and James Coker.
Interment will be at the Butler family cemetery under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home of Henryetta.
She will be taken to Hillabee Baptist Church on Thursday afternoon.
Butler died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the age of 83.
She was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Seminole County to Lana (Spencer) and Jonas Fixico.
She married Wiley Butler in 1952 in McIntosh County.
She lived most of her life in Hanna before moving to Okmulgee two years ago.
Butler worked as a nurses aid and a sewing machine operator for POK in Pharoah.
She liked playing bingo, cooking, sewing, and listening to church songs.
Butler had many friends, no matter who a person was, they were always welcomed in her home.
She always prepared meals and no one ever left her home without eating.
She was a very special woman and loved by everyone she knew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Butler; two daughters, Jessie Butler and Lucy Butler; her parents, Jonas and Lana Fixico; two sisters, Susie Mitchell and Nelessy Harjo; and one brother, Thelmond Fixico.
Butler is survived by six children, Elizabeth Butler and Wiley Butler Jr., both of Okmulgee, Judy Proctor of Hanna, Frankie Alexander of Seminole, Penny Murray and Bessie Alexander, all of Shawnee; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; one brother, John Fixico of Sapulpa; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Kathryn Sue Butts
Graveside services for Wewoka resident Kathryn Sue Butts were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Stroud Cemetery with Rev. Larry Chesser officiating, and under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Butts, 65, died Oct. 23, 2004 at Holdenville Hospital. She was born in Stuart to Benjamin and Lizzie (Lanham) Cullum on Aug. 16, 1939.
She married Wesley George Butts on Feb. 25, 1959 in Okemah. She was a homemaker and a longtime Seminole County resident.
Her parents, daughter Tammy Butts Harrison, and sister Lucille Teters preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband; two brothers Ben Cullum of Stuart, and Frank Cullum of Bowlegs; and four grandsons.
Maedene Byrd
Funeral services for Maedene Byrd, 68, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Okemah United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Olen Edwards and Rev. Don Williamson officiating.
Byrd was born on May 14, 1936 in Wetumka to Harlan and Gladys Evelyn (Brown) Baldwin. She died Aug. 14, 2004 in Oklahoma City.
She was raised in Wetumka where she attended Mingo School. On March 29, 1954 she married James (Junior) Guy Byrd, Jr. in Okmulgee and they made their home in Wetumka.
Byrd attended cosmetology school in Shawnee and became a beautician who operated two shops in Wetumka.
In 1972 they relocated to Wewoka where she was employed as a cook at the Wewoka Nursing Home for several years. Junior preceded her in death in 1989.
Byrd later married R.C. Carter and moved to Hartshorne. While there she received training as a certified nurse and medication aid and worked for Dow residential facility.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and traveling with family and friends. Byrd also enjoyed bluegrass and Gospel music and was a member of the Okemah Pentecostal Church.
Her parents; her husband R.C. Carter; and two infant children, Howard Russell and Dianna Sue preceded her in death.
Survivors include five children and their spouses, Deborah and Danny McEwin of Okemah, Larry and Vada Byrd of Okemah, Janey and Harold Gerard of Tulsa, Coleen and Carl Webb of Wellston, and David and Tracy Byrd of Okemah.
Additional survivors include three brothers, H.T. Baldwin of Weleetka, Larry Baldwin of Texas, and Earnest Young of Owasso; four sisters, Janet Maldia of Lubbock, Texas, Janey Crealia of Claremore, June Stufflebean of Jenks, and Sue Barnes of Bow, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 stepchildren, Lisa, Cara Melvin, and Ronnie.
Pallbearers will be Chris Wingate, Gary Nuckolls, Ricky Farris, and Jerry Redford.
Interment will be in the Wetumka Cemetery under the direction of Williamson Funeral Home.
Hannah Lauren Caldwell
Funeral services for Hannah Lauren Caldwell are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Clinc will officiate. She will be buried at Rosedale Cemetery.
The baby died July 18 at Children’s Hospital.
She was born May 3, 2002 to Junior and Andrea Renee Caldwell of Shawnee.
She is survived by her parents, both of the home, Taylor Winsett of Shawnee, brother; and Alyssa Caldwell of Shawnee, sister.
Grandparents include Bill and Carrie Avery of Seminole and Leatha and Alan Linville of Bartlesville.
Great grandparents include Lela Kunze of Rush Springs, Jerry and Nancy Tucker of Pawhuska and Morris McBride of San Antonio, Texas.
Casketbearers include Jeremy Tucker, Ryan Tucker, Kevin Linville and Alan Linville.
Mary Louise Camp
Mary Louise Camp, 72, a Wewoka resident, passed away at her home in Wewoka with her family by her side on Saturday, July 3, 2004.
Camp was born on Sept. 3, 1931 to Jonas and Effie Bender.
She was raised in the Seminole County area, and attended New Lima Schools and Haskell Indian Institute.
She was a member of Hitchitee Methodist Church north of Seminole.
She worked for Big Yank as a seamstress for 14 years until retirement in 1991.
Her first husband Clarence Little and her second husband Wesley Camp both proceed her in death.
Wake services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stout-Phillips Funeral Chapel in Wewoka.
She will be taken to the Hitchitee Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. wake service.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hitchitee Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Lowe Jr., Rev. Houston Tiger and Rev. Mike Harjo officiating.
Interment will be at the Bender family cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka.
She is also preceded in death by his parents, Jonas and Effie Bender; two children Melvin and Frieda Ann Little; one stepson, Maxie Little; and two grandchildren Thomas Potts and David Wayne Huluby.
She is survived by children. Marvin Little of Jacksonville, Fla., Losanna Bank of Mazie, Sanford Little of Chouteau, Nathan Little of Grand Rapids, Mich., Etta Potts and Sharon Little, both of Locust Grove, Curtis Lee Little of the home, David Little of Wewoka, Russell Little of Oklahoma City, and Thomas Little of Seminole; two brothers, John Bender of Seminole and Joe Bender of Shawnee; 33 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Jack Coley of Wewoka.
