Alpha Lee (Simmons) Copeland, 87, of Maud passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Maud.
Rev. Bob Birdwell and Rev. Jim Kirkendall will officiate.
Interment will be in the Cummings Cemetery in Maud under of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.
Copeland was born May 11, 1917 in Maud to Willie Ogustus Sammons and Nellie Vivian (Old) Sammons Young.
She lived most of her life Maud, where she graduated from high school in 1934.
She was member of the First Baptist Church in Maud where she was a Sunday school teacher.
She was associated with the Maud Historical Society.
Copeland was a homemaker and co-owner of Copeland’s IGA in Maud for many years.
She worked for Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.
She was married to Finis Earl Copeland in Maud on July 7, 1934; he preceded her in death on May 7, 1992.
She died the day before their 70th wedding anniversary.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Edward Sammons, who died in 1963; and one sister Ellouise Sammons, who died in 1919.
Copeland is survived by two sons, Roger Alan Copeland, Ft. Worth, Texas, Gary Earl Copeland, Norfolk, Va.; two grandchildren, Jeremy Scott Copeland, Dallas, and Kami Copeland Swinney, Euless, Texas.
Pallbearers include David Zeller, James Zeller, Jeremy Copeland, Barry Fletcher, Rick Carlson and Glenn Whisenhunt.
Honorary casketbearers will be the deacons of the First Baptist Church in Maud.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Camp John Marc, 2824 Swiss Ave., Dallas, TX 75204, a camp for children with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses.
Helen Louise Cordell
Graveside services for former seminole resident, Helen Louise Cordell are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Maple Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Freeman Whitlock officiating.
Cordell died Wednesday July 14th 2004 in Prague at the age of 80.
She was born on May 23rd 1924, in to Major and Erma Troice (Kilpatrick) McGee in Belleville Ark.
She was married to Hugh Cordell and was employed as a sales clerk.
She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as husband, and two brothers.
Survivors include her brother Jim McGee of Kansas City. Kan.; son Gary Cordell of Sparks; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren
Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.
Leonard Cowherd
Funeral services for Seminole resident, Leonard Harold Cowherd are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray. Belford officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Anadarko Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko with John Chennault officiating.
Cowherd went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the age of 87 in Seminole.
He was born March 31, 1917, in Ada to Oscar and Lucinda Cowherd.
He married Christine Johnson Cowherd on Nov. 27, 1940, until her untimely passing on May 4, 1966.
On Jan. 17, 1969, he married Florence Pruitt McElyea Cowherd, his loving wife of 35 years.
Upon his fathers passing in 1940, he left as a sophomore at Oklahoma A&M to assist his mother and two younger brothers by managing the Hickory Ridge family farm in Wetumka.
He was an oilfield roustabout, a shipyard welder, a shoe department manager and assisted in a wire rope business.
In 1953, he began a 29-year career with the Public Service Company of Oklahoma.
Cowherd earned his electrician’s credentials and worked his way up from intake operator to Station Electrician and Senior Technician at the Southwest Power Station in Washita.
He retired in 1982 as the Electrical Supervisor of the Oologah Station.
He was recognized for his intensity as a football, basketball and baseball player.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, water skier, bowler, golfer and sportsman.
Cowherd approached jhis recreations with a high level of intensity and won several championships and national awards.
Service to his Lord and Savior was paramount to Cowherd.
He was delighted when asked to join three families to establish an Independent Christian Church in Washita.
He served as teacher, deacon, elder, lay Minister, Chairman of the Board and bass singer in the men’s quartet.
He opened his home and touched the lives of many Bible College student ministers who came to the new church.
In every community he lived, he served the Lord including interim preacher at Wetumka First Christian Church.
A shining witness, he was a current member and elder emeritus of the Seminole First Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Cowherd; mother, Lucinda Cowherd; two brothers, Earl Cowherd and Walter Cowherd and wife, Christine Cowherd.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Cowherd of the home; one brother, Murrel Cowherd and wife, Helen of Tulsa; two daughters, Mary Lou Mannschreck of Enid and Betty Cussen and husband, Jim of Broken Arrow; one son, Harold Cowherd of Dallas, Texas; 32 nieces and nephews and their families; grandchildren, Christy Thompson and husband Randy of Dallas, Texas, Kyle Cussen and wife, Misti of Broken Arrow, and Kimberly Cowherd of Dallas, Texas; step grandchildren, Leanne Moffitt of Oklahoma City, Paul Moffitt of Portland Ore., Wade Jarlsberg and wife, Cara of Norman, and Ande Jarlsberg of Norman; great grandchildren, Caraline Thompson of Dallas, Texas and Cassie Cussen of Broken Arrow; step great grandchildren, Jase and Porter Jarlsberg of Norman and Ewan Moffitt of Oklahoma City; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Cussen, Randy Thompson, Mike Osburn, Kenneth Brinlee, Alton Brinlee, Leonard Bailey, Steve Harris and Jimmy Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Lennard, Fred Salazar, Joe Hall, James Eastep, Roy Osburn and members of the First Christian Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Seminole First Christian Church of Seminole.
Betty Craft
Graveside services for lifelong Seminole resident, Betty Carolyn Craft are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Little Cemetery with Rev. Fred Morrison officiating.
Interment will follow under the direction of Swearingen Fuenral Home of Seminole.
Craft died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at the age of 62 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.
She was born June 8, 1941, in Seminole to Jasper Emery Presley and Opal Annebelle (Hoover) Presley.
She married Johnny Craft on July 13, 1959, in Seminole.
Craft was a homemaker and mother of two daughters.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Rena Kay Craft in Sept. 1977.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Craft of the home; one daughter, Christy Fuller of Okmulgee; one brother, James Presley of Edmondton, Wash. and one grandchild.
Bleek Cravens-Billie
Funeral services for Bleek Da’Shawn Cravens Billie, infant son of Chauncey Cravens and Danielle LaNae Billie are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Thomas Billie Sr. officiating.
Interment will follow at the Cosar family cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
The infant was born Jan. 2, 2004, at Seminole Medical Center and died the same day.
Survivors include his parents, Chauncey Cravens and Danielle Billie of Seminole; grandparents, Keith and Renee Billie also of Seminole and Dianne Hitchye; great grandparents, Patricia Morgal, Bobby George, Pauline Davis, Rosie and Donald Harjo and Thomas Billie Sr.
Vurlin E. Crawford
Funeral services for Vurlin E. Crawford will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Church of Christ in Okemah with Dr. Roger Thompson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Okemah under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
Crawford died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 77 at his home in Okemah.
He was born April 11, 1926, in Anadarko to William Perry and Mamie Etta (Brady) Crawford.
He spent 20 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1964 as Sergeant First Class.
He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific theater medal with two Bronze Stars, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and a Sharp Shooting Award.
During the Korean War he was a Master Parachutist with the 11th Airborne Division.
After retiring from the army with the 82nd Airborne, he moved his family to Cromwell.
He started working for the Texas/Oklahoma Express Trucking Company in Oklahoma City, where he worked for 21 years, retiring for the second time in 1986.
He married Bonnie Jean Chaffin in 1983 and they moved to Okemah where he enjoyed his retirement by going to auctions, small farming, tearing down old buildings and part time supervisor at Okemah Truck and Trailer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Ron Crawford.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Jean (Liles) Crawford of Okemah; daughters, Darlen Easum of Merritt Island, Fla. and Marlen Creason of O’Fallon, Ill.; one step-son, Buddy Chaffin of Okemah; step-daughter, Laura Crump of Okemah; daughter-in-law, Robin Crawford of Okemah; grandchildren, Vurlin Crawford and wife, Tammie of Okemah, Vernon E. Crawford of Tulsa, Joseph R. Crawford of Norman, Stephanie A. Easum of Merritt Island, Fla., Kylene Creason of O’Fallon, Ill. and Chris Crump of Moore; great grandchildren, Ron Crawford II, Jonathan Crawford and Sean Crawford, all of Okemah and Quentin Crump of Moore; sisters, Gladys George of Bearden, Amber Ott of Okemah, Fay Cravens of San Antonio, Texas, Ruby Ryals of Plano, Texas, and Rose Earhardt of Oklahoma City; one brother, Sturlin Crawford of McCloud, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Serving as pallbearer will be Tom Easum, Buddy Chaffin, Terry Crump, Walter Joe Klutts, Charles Tucker, Harold Leach and Eudell Marzett.
