Tony Award Winning Producer Dies at 69
James Robert Cresson left Seminole at the age of 16 to become a mail boy at Paramount Studios and became the youngest actor to appear at the Pasadena Playhouse at the time.
He went on to produce Tony Award winning Broadway productions.
He will return to Seminole to be buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, along with his mother and father, in a graveside memorial service set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004.
Rev. Carl Whitfield will be officiating the services under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
Cresson died February 29, 2004, at the age of 69 in Savannah, Ga. after a battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 25, 1934, in Seminole to Sherman Creson and Marie Creson.
Cresson was a student with perfect grades and attendance until he left home.
He took acting lessons while he worked for Paramount Studios.
He was an actor of stage and television and was a stage and movie producer and screenwriter.
He later moved to New York to appear in "No Time for Sergeants, " "Fathers Day, " "Flora the Red Menace, " "Hot Spot, " and "Take Me Along."
In film he played the part of George in "The Greenwich Village Story."
Cresson produced the Broadway productions of "The Norman Conquests, , " "On the 20th Century" (which won five Tony Awards), and "Chicago, " the stage musical original.
As a movie producer, Cresson was responsible for the films, "Myra Breckenridge, " "The Boston Strangler, " "The Oprime of Miss Jean Broadie, " "Travels With My Aunt, " "Mame, " "The Shining, " (although he would not allow his name to be credited) "The Boys From Brazil, " and "The Abdication."
As a screenwirter, he wrote under the name of James Hicks and the following movies were derived from original screenplays.
Although he was disgusted with the final outcome of the productions, the incompetence and general lack of honor to story telling has never seen any of the films that he has written fully through.
The films that Cresson has written, that were made are "The Morning After, " "Defenseless" and "Chattahoochee."
Cresson passed away in peace and as a born again Christian, and is in the house of the Lord forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his sister, Alice Vrba; brothers Charles Creson and Sherman Creson and lifelong partner of 26 years, Michael Markgraf of Savannah, Ga.
Donations may be made to the local hospice.
LaJuana J. Cross
Graveside services for longtime Seminole resident LaJuana J. Cross will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sat. at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Cross, 71, died on Sept. 2, 2004 at Norman Regional Hospital. She was born to Newt and Odessa (Watson) Meeks on April 14, 1933 in Seminole.
She married R.L. Cross on June 30, 1951. She was a homemaker and member of Seminole First Baptist church.
Her husband and one sister, Betty Hays, preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Mona and husband Floyd Griffin of Seminole, and Debbie and husband Mike McCoy of Tulsa; two brothers, Bill and wife Marge Meeks of Shawnee, and Jack and wife Margie Meeks of Seminole; sister Juanita Cornelison of Seminole; four grandchildren, Amy Langham, Chris McCoy, Steve Griffin, Brian Griffin; and three great grandchildren, Preston McCoy, Gavin Langham, Grayson Langham.
Edna Lee Dahl
Graveside services for Seminole County resident, Edna Lee Dahl of Maud were scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Cummings Cemetery in Maud with Hospice Chaplin, Karen Smith officiating under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home..
Dahl died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the age of 78 at her residence in Maud.
She was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Troy to Jess Cordell and Ollie Pearl (Clement) Cordell, the oldest, with five brothers younger.
She married L.J. Dahl on Aug. 29, 1947, in Oklahoma City.
She moved to Maud/Tecumseh area from Oklahoma City in 1986.
She was a homemaker, was initiated into the Rebekah Lodge of Del City #151 on Dec. 27, 1962 and was Noble Grand in their new hall in 1967.
She served as advisory officer of Theta Rho Girls for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, L.J. Dahl, of the home; one son, Richard Snyder of Midwest City; one daughter, Peggy Merriman of Moore; five brothers, Jess Cordell, Delbert Cordell and James Cordell, all of Oklahoma City, Earl Dean Cordell of Montgomery, Ala., Jerry Cordell of Sulphur; three grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Casket bearers included Terry Merriman, Phillip Raines, Danny Lea, Chris Lane, Marcus Welch and Delbert Cordell.
Honorary bearers were Joe Merriman, Kevin Merriman Kyle Merriman and Dennis Cranford.
Andrew Franklin Davis
Funeral services for Wewoka resident Andrew Franklin Davis are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bird Creek Church. Revs. Houston Tiger, Kenneth Cooper and Jimpsey Harjo are set to officiate.
Wake services are set for tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Swearingen Funeral Chapel and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bird Creek Church.
Davis will be interred at Burden Cemetery, east of Bowlegs.
Arrangements are being handled by Swearingen Funeral Home.
Davis died in an auto accident Sunday Dec. 5, 2004, east of Bowlegs, at the age of 63.
A lifelong Seminole County resident, Davis was born April 16, 1941, in Konawa to Harry Davis and Sarah Lillian (Pennokee) Joshua.
Davis was a widower.
He retired from the oilfield as a roughneck. A veteran of the Army, Davis was a paratrooper.
He attended Sand Creek and Bird Creek Churches.
Davis also coached little league softball for many years.
He was preceded in death by his biological father; his mother and father who raised him, Thomas and Minnie Burden; three brothers, Leroy and Bobby Joshua and Larry Burden; and his grandson Dakota Joshua, who died with him in the accident.
Davis is survived by his mother, Sarah Lillian Joshua of Tulsa; five brothers, Edmond Joshua Jr. of Wetumka, Martin Joshua of Oklahoma City, Randall Joshua of Tulsa, Travis Burden of Bartlesville, and George Joshua of Wewoka; 13 sisters, Mary Louise, Sue, Annie Lou, Mary Elizabeth and Jeretta Lavonne Joshua of Tulsa, Benita Jo Blackburn of Tulsa, Betty Procter of Depew, Salinda Davis of Tulsa, Sheila Wood of Konawa, Shelly Howell of Seminole, Thomasine Wildcat of Shawnee, Katherine Davis of Glennpool and Patricia Hill of Depew.
He is also survived by three daughters, Andrea and Audrey May Davis of Seminole and Michelle Burden of Wewoka; one son, Thomas Lee Gentry of Seminole; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Casket bearers are Oscar Bunner, Rex Hailey, Walter Factor, Marty Lena, Timmy Gentry, William Harrison and Jimmy D. Harjo.
Honorary Bearers are Bunny Carpitcher, Brad Stuteville, O’Daniel Simpson, Bill Hobia Jr., Buddy Wood, Bobby Tyson, Sam Tyson, Albert Tyson and Randall Joshua Jr.
Donald Davis
Funeral services for Donald Davis, 74, are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, February 13 at the Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka.
Davis died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Holdenville General Hospital.
He had been a resident of Oakridge Home, in Wewoka, since March of 1986.
He was born on March 21, 1928, to J. S. Davis.
He is survived by his family at Oakridge Home.
Donald Davis
Graveside services for Seminole resident, Donald Dale Davis are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Little Cemetery with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.
Interment will follow under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
Davis died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the age of 71 at the Seminole Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Miami to Freda Jean "Jeanie" (Koler) Davis.
He served in the United States Air Force as Airman 2nd Class and was a member of the DAV Chapter 32 in Tulsa.
He was a parking attendant at BB’s in downtown Tulsa until he became disabled 20 years ago.
He moved to Seminole three years ago from Tulsa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Freda Jean Davis on Jan. 8, 2003.
He is survived by two sons, Tony Giboney of Oklahoma City and Michael Giboney of Tulsa, and one daughter, Penny Berry of Checotah.
Kathleen Davis
Funeral services for Guillia Kathleen "Pogue" Davis, relative of Seminole residents, are scheduled for 10 am. Thursday, June 3 at the East Main Church of Christ in Holdenville with Alan Eck and Rev. Euel Bowen officiating.
Interment will follow at the Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of the Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.
Davis died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the age of 89 in Skiatook.
She was born Dec. 17, 1914, in the Witty Community near Holdenville to W.A. Pogue and Nellie (DeVaney) Pogue.
She lived over 71 years in the Witty Community, finishing grade school there and graduated from Holdenville High School.
She married Raymond R. Davis on Feb. 2, 1940 in Dallas, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond R. Davis on Nov. 10, 1963; father, mother, and sisters Opal Shipley in 1985 and Virginia House in 1995.
She is survived by her step daughter, Betty Jean Heckart of Aurora, Colo., nephew Bill Shipley and wife, Ann of Seminole, as well as other family and friends.
