William Ted Slagle

Graveside services for long-time Konawa resident, William Ted Slagle are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Vamoosa Cemetery, under the direction of Pickard-Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.

Rev. Mitch Williams will officiate.

Slagle died Monday, July 5, 2004, at the age of 93, at his residence in Konawa.

He was born Oct. 29, 1910, in Tahlequah to Robert Austin Slagle and Emma Jane (Youngblood) Slagle.

He married Mollie (Selfridge) on Feb. 28, 1934, in Holdenville.

He worked in the greater oilfields of Seminole County and also worked for the city of Konawa.

He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as 1st Sgt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mollie Slagle on April 15, 1993, and three brothers.

He is survived by his friend and caretaker; Delmar T. Johnson of Konawa, and one sister Maggie Dabbs of Topock, Ariz.

He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and a host of other friends and relatives.

Corrine Edith Slay

Graveside services for former Seminole resident Corrine Edith Slay, 85, will be Saturday 10 a.m. at Family Services Funeral Parlor located in Kermit, Texas with Brother Dudley Mullins officiating.

Slay died July 19, 2004 after having been born in Morse on April 15, 1919. She was a homemaker in Hobbs, N.M.

She leaves behind six sons, Jerry Slay of Carman, Ill., James Slay of Cushing, Mark Slay of Kermit, Texas, Scott Slay of Hobbs, N.M., Gary Slay of Barling, Ariz., Pat Slay of Cedarville, Ariz.

Other survivors include two brothers, Donnie Kope of Calif., and Neil Kope, as well as one sister: Susan Kope: 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Interment will follow the services at Kermit Cemetery.

Houston Smart

Funeral services for longtime Wewoka resident Houston Smart, 88, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Stout - Phillips Funeral Chapel with David McPeak officiating.

Interment is to follow services at Oakwood Cemetery with Jeff Logan, David Logan, Danny Logan, Greg Smart, Mike Gutierrez and Dallas Tyler acting as pallbearers.

Smart died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004 at Holdenville General Hospital. He was born on Feb. 8, 1916 to Emit and Nettle (Weaver) Smart in Carter County.

He grew up in western Oklahoma and attended Fox School in Stephens County. Smart married Juanita on Aug. 27, 1938.

Smart enlisted in the United States Army on April 12, 1944, serving until Dec 22, 1945. He retired from construction and the oilfield in 1973 and moved to Wewoka in 1977 from Poteet, Texas.

His parents, one son Houston Smart Jr., one daughter Rosalita Walden, six brothers Jerald, R.L., R.E., Haywood, Carl and Hollie Smart, and sister Ona Gravtis all preceded him in death.

Smart’s survivors include his wife; children, Judy Gutierrez of San Antonio, Texas, Ken Smart of Bethany, Debbie McPeak of Galt, Calif., Tammy Belshe of Dallas, Texas, and Darrell Smart of Burns Flat; brothers, Emit Smart and Harold Smart both of Wewoka; sister, Irene Hansen of Duncan; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

The honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Smart, Steve McPeak, Chris McPeak and Brandon Tyler.

Rita Mae Smart

Graveside funeral services for former Seminole resident Rita Mae Smart are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Little Cemetery.

Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate; burial will be under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Smart died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at Grace Care Center, Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 93.

She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Gordenville, Texas, to Benjamin Franklin and Sarah Margaret (Matthews) Melton.

She was married to Roden Robert Smart on Aug. 13, 1928, in Childress, Texas.

They lived in Seminole, where she was a homemaker, until 50 years ago when they moved to Wichita Falls.

She had been a member of First Christian Church in Whitesboro, Texas.

Smart was preceded in death by her husband, who died Dec. 25, 1968; her parents; and one son, Bob.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Smart, Norman, and Tommy Smart, California; two daughters, Margaret Middleton, Wichita, Kans., and Doris Hood, Ozona, Texas; one sister, Jessie Metcalif., Dallas; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Diana Sue Smith

Funeral services for longtime Wewoka resident, Diana Sue Walker will be held at 1:30 on Thursday under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Service will be held at Hilltop Presbyterian Church in Wewoka. Elder Kelly Tiger will officiate.

Two wake services were scheduled, with the first being held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel.

The second wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hilltop Presbyterian Church.

Cremation will follow with a private interment at the Walker Family Cemetery at a later date.

Smith 61, died Saturday at her home in Wewoka. She was born Nov. 18, 1942 to Joe and Alice (Bean) Walker.

She attended Wewoka schools and later became an education counselor. Smith retired from Centennial Valley Union High School in Hawthorn, Calif. in 2003.

She married Eugene Garland Smith in Waldron, Ark. on Dec. 8, 1997.

Smith is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Matthew Notah; and brother, George Walker.

She is survived by her husband of the home; daughter, Janell Notah of Earlsboro; son, Christopher Notah of Wewoka; brother, Issac Foster of Konawa; sisters, Loretta Votaw and Geneva Jones, both of Seminole; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers will include Mike Ventris, Dale Shoemaker, Darnell Brannon, Ronnie Yahola, Chad Anderson, and Billy Tiger.

Bessie May Smith

Funeral services for Bessie May Smith, mother of Wewoka resident Verna Jean Mills, were scheduled for 11 a.m. today, under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.

Rev. Roy Rogers and Rev. Larry Chesser were set to officiate at the services, held in the First Baptist Church of Lamar.

Burial was set to follow at the Lamar Cemetery.

Smith died in Wewoka Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at the age of 89.

She was born on July 29, 1915, in Salisaw, to J.T. McKenzie and Drew (Humphrey) McKenzie.

On June 26, 1932, she married Ralph Smith in Lamar and she remained in Lamar all her life.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lamar.

Smith gardened as a hobby and did yard work.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Wade McKenzie, Fred McKenzie, and Jack McKenzie; and her sister, Jewel McKenzie.

Smith is survived by her sons, Larry Don Smith of Lamar, and Jerry Dean Smith of Tulsa; her daughter, Verna Jean Mills of Wewoka; her brother Arvil McKenzie of Lamar; three grandchildren; a step-grandson; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers for her services include Ronald Caudell, Jacky McCoy, Barney Gibson, Perry Burleson, Guy Fechter, Larry Smith Jr., and Mike McKenzie.

Honorary bearers are Ethan Byrd, Phillip Gibson, and Steve Chesser.

Billie Sue Smith

Funeral services for Seminole resident, Billie Sue (Butts) Smith are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Leo Streeter and J.D. Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends at Swearingen Funeral Home on Friday, March 12 from 6-8 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Smith died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the age of 72 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.

She was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Preston Bend, Texas to George Edward Butts and Lola Grace Carender Butts.

She was married to John V. Smith and was a homemaker and a foster grandparent volunteer.

She was a longtime Seminole County resident as well as a member of the Ideal Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Dee Butts; parents; husband, John V. Smith in April 2002; and two grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, John V. Smith Sr. of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Twila Smith Mason, Kimberly Rodgers and Rachel Mason, all of Seminole; two brothers, George Lee of Mesquite, Texas and James Carender of Mercer Island, Wash.; two sisters, Wanda Sanford of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Martha Bennett of Lockport, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Brandon Smith

Funeral services for Seminole County resident, Brandon Michael Smith of Wewoka, are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15 at the First Baptist Church in Wewoka with Rev. John Bullard officiating.

Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka, under the direction of Stout Phillips Funeral Home of Wewoka.

Smith died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the age of 23 at his home in Wewoka.

He was born July 12, 1980, in Ada to Brad and Paula Elmore Smith.

Smith was reared in Wewoka, where he also attended school.

He later moved to Taft, Calif., moving back to Wewoka in 1995.

He was employed as a directional driller for J-Mac in Holdenville.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jimmie Smith.

He is survived by his parents, Brad and Paula Smith of Keller, Texas; one brother, Jesse Smith of Wewoka; his maternal grandparents, Sterling and Clemma Elmore of Wewoka; his paternal. grandmother, Terry Smith of Wewoka; one maternal uncle, Randy Elmore and wife, Shelly of Tecumseh; one paternal aunt, Kathy Jones and husband, Jimmy of Wewoka; one paternal uncle, Ronnie Smith and wife, Cari of Broken Arrow; one nephew, Tre Smith of Wewoka and eight great aunts, six uncles, seven cousins, one very special friend, Derek Ramsey of Wewoka and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pall bearers will be Derek Ramsey, Justin Roulston, Chase Powell, Paul Factor, Justin Chambers and Kelly Babb.

Honorary bearers will be Rocky Harris, Tommy Garner, Shane Powell, Brett Short and Josh Nally.
