Robert Wright and family
Robert Wright
Robert Wright looked like a biker and he died a biker’s death, but by all accounts, he wasn’t what most people think bikers are.
"He didn’t drink, didn’t use drugs, didn’t even smoke, " said Wright’s friend, Thomas Russell of Seminole.
"He played guitar, drums and piano, but he gave all that up because of the alcohol and drugs that surrounded it."
But Wright, 55, of Earlsboro, died early Sunday morning, when his Harley Davidson motorcycle struck the car of an allegedly drunk driver, who turned into him.
Travis Earl Baker, 27, Tecumseh, was arrested and booked for negligent homicide.
The investigating officer’s report says Baker was drunk at the scene, 45th and Kickapoo, Shawnee.
Wright was a patch-wearing member of the Banditos, a worldwide motorcycle club.
"The Banditos is one of the biggest motorcycle clubs in the world, " Russell said.
"But the members are misjudged a lot.
"Robert is a working, taxpaying citizen; he has legal custody of his grandchildren.
"His wife has a disability and he is very protective and dedicated to his family."
Wright, an Oregon native, worked at Quality Lube in Shawnee.
"Me and my wife, Renae, we’ll be sitting around the house and if somebody mention’s Robert’s name, we’ll just start laughing, " Russell said.
"He was goofy looking: bald with a goatee that hung down real low.
"And he was a prankster; he’d have people call the house so I wouldn’t recognize his voice to play jokes on me."
Wright was on his way home from a coalition of bikers in Oklahoma City, where club members met to discuss laws for motorcyclists.
Russell, who said he’d been friends with Wright for seven years, mourned his friend’s loss at the hands of an alleged drunk.
"Robert didn’t deserve to die like this, " Russell said.
"I just want people to know he was a good guy
"There have been so many wrecks – this is getting ridiculous.
"There were two members of another club killed by a drunk driver the same day in Oklahoma City, and a member of the Tribes of Judah, a real religious motorcycle club, killed this weekend.
"Something has got to stop the drunk drivers. Bikers need to be so careful."
Russell hoped his comments about drunk driving and biker safety could make something positive come from his friend’s death.
He and members of Wright’s club have joined to pay for his funeral.
"We’ll meet at Swearingen’s about 12 noon Saturday on our motorcycles and pick up Robert’s ashes, " Russell said.
"We’ll take them to an area, probably on Old Moccasin Trail near Shawnee, for a private going-away. It looks like it will be a full-blown bikers’ coalition."
Russell said he expected as many as 300 bikers from all over the US to attend the private memorial.
Wright is survived by his mother, Bernice Wright of Alaska; his wife, Saundra, of the home; and his children, Renae Wright Somers, California, Kristiana, Rhiannon, Alexander, Rhyan and Lita Wright, all of Shawnee.
Survivors also include three brothers, Terry, Kevin and Gary Wright, all of Alaska; three sisters, Linda Wright, Alaska, Patricia Boon, Greenfield, and Nora Mood, Guthrie; and his grandchildren, Tyler Wright and Jessamy Etchison, of the home.
