Graveside services for Konawa native, Elmer Austin, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday in Ada.
Elmer Austin was born June 22, 1919 in Konawa to Sadie Maxwell Austin and Albert Austin, who preceded him in death.
He accepted Jesus as his personal savior many years ago and he has now been accepted into God’s glory. Elmer left us on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 due to poor health.
Elmer had one sister, Bessie Austin Tate; one brother, who died as a teen, Leroy Austin; and two other brothers, Jay and Leroy, who preceded him in death. His brother, Jimmie Austin, lives in Seminole.
Elmer leaves a wife of 67 years, Trilla Mae Thompson Austin, and a son, Billy Bob Austin of Arlington, Texas.
Also surviving him are two grandsons, Steven Robert Austin and Mark Allan Austin of Arlington, Texas and three great-grandchildren, Christopher Robert Austin, Nathaniel Joe Austin, children of Steven, and Cade Allan Austin child of Mark.
Elmer lived his young life in Konawa, where he played baseball and basketball. He was an all-state basketball player in school and after graduation he played minor baseball for the Wilson Packing Company of Oklahoma City.
He was a very good pitcher and was offered a contract to play with the Red Sox, which he signed. However, it was not the life that professional ball provides today, and he and his wife, Trilla, decided it was not for them.
Elmer married Trilla Mae Thompson Austin on Dec. 24, 1939. They lived in Oklahoma City, where they had a son, Billy Bob.
During this time World War II was going strong and Elmer joined the United States Army and was sent to Germany where he fought with General Patton’s brigade.
He was awarded the Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct medal, EMAE Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Service Stars.
After returning from the war he worked at Tinker Air Force Base in civil service as a welder and a supervisor.
He was a member of the Masonic Order and had also coached Little League baseball when Bob was younger.
Elmer retired from Tinker in 1969 and he and Trilla moved to Lake Texoma where they lived for 17 years.
He loved the lake and spent most of his time gardening. He and Trilla provided most of the neighbors with vegetables all summer long. They spent many hours canning green beans and tomato juice for friends and relatives.
Elmer and Trilla were very active in their church at Lake Texoma and Elmer was a deacon. They both did a lot to help in their church to further the Lord’s work.
Among other things, Elmer would cook stew and cornbread for the gatherings of the congregation, here in Oklahoma and in Arkansas.
In 1986 the couple moved to Bella Vista, Ark. where they became very active in their church work.
They had more friends than most people have in their lifetime. They all treated the couple as though they were a brother or sister.
Elmer played golf until his health no longer allowed him to do so.
In October of 2004, the couple moved to Arlington, Texas to be closer to their son Bob and daughter-in-law, Shirley, and their children and great-grandchildren.
They lived at Town Village in Arlington, which is an independent living apartment complex.
Their new church is First Baptist Church of Arlington and although Elmer could not always get around well enough to attend church with his family, he made sure he traveled with them when they first moved to Arlington.
They were very happy there until Elmer’s health became so poor that he left us.
