Funeral services for James A. Cooper, son of Seminole resident Albert Cooper, are scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin, Kans.
Burial will follow in Lakin Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Cooper died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006. at High Plains Retirement Village in Larkin, at the age of 54.
He was born Sept. 23, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, to Albert O. and Lorraine (Hutsell) Cooper.
Being raised in a military family, Cooper grew up in many different places.
After his education, he lived in Michigan, Ohio and Oklahoma while mainly working as a restaurant manager.
He married Cheryl A. Malley on Aug. 19, 1972, in Pinconning, Mich.
He moved to Garden City, Kans., in 1989 and became manager of the Taylor Food Mart.
He later went to work in the supply room at Tyson beef plant.
He moved to Lakin in 1998.
He was a builder and enjoyed woodwork.
After he became disabled, he began quilting, knitting and crocheting to keep his hands busy and to be productive.
He also enjoyed 3D puzzles and designing things.
Cooper was preceded in death by his mother and one son, Anthony Cooper.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, of the home; one daughter, Chrystal L. Sims of Lakin; one son, James A. Cooper II, of Lakin; his father, Albert Cooper, Seminole; two brothers, Al and Curtis Cooper, both of Seminole; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the High Plains Retirement Village in care of the funeral home.
Lewis Cornelius
Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident, Lewis Franklin Cornelius, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole.
Rev. Gary Green is to officiate with services under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Cornelius, 86, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006 at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City. He was born on April 30, 1920 in Cogar, Okla. to Lewis Alexander and Mable Irene (Kelly) Cornelius.
On Sept. 26, 1939 he married Clara Marie Alexander in Chandler.
He served in the United States Marines as a Private 1st Class, Company I 3rd Battalion, with the 45th Division 27 Marine on Iwo Jima Island during World War II.
There he received a Purple Heart, bronze star for bravery and was decorated as a sharp shooter. Cornelius was discharged in 1945.
He worked for Wilson and Company in Oklahoma City for 25 years and after that he retired from Tinker Air Force base, where he worked as a parts specialist.
His parent; one daughter, Peggy Neu (Sept. 3, 2006); one grandson, Damien John Anthony (2002) and two sisters, Ila Lowery and Liddie (who died as an infant) preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife, Clara Marie Cornelius of Seminole; daughter, Frankie Hollon of Seminole; two brothers, Elmer Cornelius of Lookeba, Okla., Ralph Cornelius of Wannette; six sisters, Hazel Metcalf of marble City, Okla., Alene Green of More, Lillian Baker of Moore, Lydia Bybee of Newcastle, Cassie Fisher of Oklahoma City and Helen Britton of Binger, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Casket bearers for the services will be Brent Jones, Pat Skaggs, Steve Hamilton, Dustin Hamilton, John Anthony and Mark McCown.
Jimmy Dale Cortez
Funeral services for former longtime Seminole resident Jimmy Dale Cortez, "Jimmy Rock, " are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.
Rev. Manuel Rivas, Jr. is to officiate and services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Cortez died Saturday, May 6, 20006 after a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 10, 1953 to Joe Cortez, Sr. and Polly Rivas Cortez.
He loved music and could often be found singing with the band or performing karaoke at his favorite hangout.
Cortez served his country from 1975 – 1978 in the United States Army as a private first class.
His parents and one brother, Joe Cortez, Jr. preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Summer and Cheyanne and their mother Rhonda Fagan and son Chad of Blanchard; two brothers, Johnny Cortez and Fred Cortez, both of Oklahoma City and four sisters, Rose Cortez of Oklahoma City, Betty Jean Vasquez of Shawnee, Pauline Wells and Betty Lou Vaut, both of Seminole.
Judith Irene Cosar
Funeral services for Konawa resident Judith Irene Cosar are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Creek Indian Baptist church.
Rev. George Harjochee and Rev. Dorsey Nero are to officiate with interment at the Cosar Family Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Judith passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada. She was born Jan. 20, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa to Roy R. Bath and Veronica (O’Brien) Bath.
Mrs. Cosar will lie in state at the funeral home until 4 p.m. today and her body will then be moved to Cedar Creek Indian Baptist Church where a wake service will take place at 8 p.m.
She married Roman Cosar on March 17, 1961 in Kansas City, Mo. and moved to Konawa in 1964.
Mrs. Cosar has worked as a sewing machine operator and was a homemaker. She was a member of Spring Baptist Church of Sasakwa.
She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by all.
Her parents and her husband, Roman Cosar in 1983, preceded her in death.
Surviving are three sons, Aaron Cosar and his wife Justen of Midwest City, Roy Cosar and his wife Robin of Ada and Jesse Cosar of Konawa; one daughter, Fannie Meashintubby and her fiancé Amos Morphis of Konawa; seven grandchildren, Christopher Cosar, Roman Cosar, Jesica Cosar, Alisha Cosar, Amber Cosar, Ryan Cosar and Rayce Cosar and one great-grandchild, Danielle Billie.
Serving as casket bearers will be Glenn Knighton, Jimmy Knighton, John Morphis, Mark Porter, Billie Porter and Billy Don Sanderson.
Honorary bearers will be Amos Morphis, William Martin and Scott Johnson.
Larry Cossey
A celebration of life for Larry Joe Cossey has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka, under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.
Mr. Larry Joe Cossey, age 56 of Burns, Tenn. passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006. Joe peacefully entered into rest after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Oklahoma City, but raised in Tribbey, Okla., the son of Gene Cossey and the late Elsie Marie Northcutt Cossey.
He was a very supportive and gentle man that dedicated his life to his family, friends and the music industry.
Joe was an accomplished musician and songwriter; his instrument of choice was the electric bass guitar. The past five years, he has been the bass guitarist for country music artist, Mel McDaniel.
His music career began in Oklahoma as a band member and singer backing numerous country music artists.
He was the recipient of the Oklahoma Country Music Association Bass Player of the year award. In 1992, Joe moved to Nashville to continue pursuing his career.
His love and talent for songwriting awarded him in 1995 by winning 1st place in the country category of Billboard Magazine’s songwriting contest, and again in 1998 as a winner of the TNN songwriting contest.
He fulfilled a dream by playing on the Grand Ole Opry. The Grand Ole Opry made an incredible and unforgettable impact on Joe and his family for the support he received in his career and during his illness.
He is survived by wife, Malinda Cossey, Burns, Tenn.; father, Gene Cossey, Tecumseh; daughter, Jacy Cable and her husband Denson, McAlester; granddaughter, Bren Marie Cable, McAlester; sister, Janis Brooks and her husband Randy, Wewoka; nieces and nephews, Dr. Stephen and Johnita Walker, Fred and Wendy Argo all of Wewoka and Jeff and Jeri Brooks, Oklahoma City; longtime friend, Lyndel East, White Bluff, Tenn.; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews and loyal friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Vanderbilt Oncology Dept. and Alive Hospice for their care and comfort.
Bertha Cotton
Funeral services for former longtime Wewoka resident Bertha Cotton are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2006 at the Sacred Heart Church in Konawa. Father Matthew Brown will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka, under the direction of Wooster Funeral Home of Pauls Valley.
A rosary service will be held at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m, on Thursday.
Cotton died Tuesday, July 4, 2006 in Pauls Valley at the age of 97. She was born to Charles and Pauline (Hunt) McNally on May 7, 1909 in Coalgate.
She grew up and attended school in Coalgate and graduated in McAlester.
Along with her husband, Bob, they owned and operated Quality Cleaners in Wewoka for more than 30 years.
She was a member of the Wewoka Catholic Church.
Cotton was an excellent seamstress and she worked doing alterations in her home in Pauls Valley until 2000.
For the past five years, Cotton made her home with her niece Geraldine.
Her husband, Robert "Bob" Cotton in December of 1984; two brothers, Dan McNally and Charles McNally; and five sisters, Catherine Cassidy, Pauline Williamson, Carlotta Edler, Mary Logan, and Robena Bennett Campbell preceded her in death.
She is survived by her niece, Geraldine Embree, Pauls Valley.
Robert ‘Don’ Cox
Funeral services for Seminole resident Robert "Don" Cox are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.
Jimmy Moreland and J.C. Simpson are to officiate and interment is to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Cox, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006 at his home. He was born on Dec. 14, 1931 in Seminole to Willis Bishop and Stella Mae (Austin) Cox.
Don spent three years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1950. Soon after that he married Doris Dean Pitts on July 4, 1950 in Konawa.
He went to work in the oilfields and retired in 1994 as president of the Seminole Company, a prominent oilfield service company in Seminole for many years. During his employment he was blessed with precious friendships that brought him joy and endured through the years.
Don loved to fish, hunt and watch football. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. His quick wit and sense of humor will long be remembered.
He was a member of the Lord’s Community Church in Seminole and received a great deal of support and encouragement from his church family, especially during the course of his illness.
His parents, son Ronnie Cox, two brother, Earl Cox and Willis Bishop Cox Jr. and three sisters, Mary Cox, Addie Bell Gittel and one infant preceded him in death.
Don is survived by his wife, Doris Dean Cox of the home; daughter, Donna Cox of Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Dale Babb of Ada; daughter-in-law Leora Cox of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Katherine Bennight of Jacksonville, N.C. and Billie Jean Barrientos of Wichita, Kan and six grandchildren, Toni Pack, Brain Babb, Robert Babb, Valerie Dorsey, Rhawni Mendenhall and Lyle Pitts.
In addition, one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Carol and Reford Mills of Seminole and Dewey Pitts of Ringling; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, many nieces, nephew, friends and his church family survive him.
Casket bearers for the services will be Brian Babb, Robert Babb, Michael Mills, Sheldon Mills, Don Pack and Derrick pack. Honorary bearers will be Leniol Wright, Reford Mills and Robert lemmings.
