Jean Spicer

Memorial services for longtime Seminole resident Jean Spicer are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Seminole.

Dr Mike Thompson and Russell Vicars are to officiate the services that are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Seminole.

Spicer, 74, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 in Oklahoma City. She was born Aug. 3, 1931 in Phenix City, Ala. to Fred L. and Lillian (Williams) Holt.

On Aug. 28, 1948 she married Bill Spicer in Fort Smith, Ark. and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2002.

She was a retired schoolteacher where she taught in at Oologah, Prague and Seminole schools. She retired in 1988.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Surviving is her son Don Spicer of Oklahoma City; daughter, Debbie Thompson of Stillwater; one sister, Patricia King of Arkadelphia, Ark. and four grandchildren.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the church or charity of choice.

Thelma Lois Spiller

Funeral services for Seminole native Thelma Lois Spiller are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole. Visitation will be from 12 – 2 p.m. Saturday at Havenbrook.

Thelma Lois "Aunt Jo, T.J." Higdon Spiller, 86, of Norman, died March 14, 2006, in Denver, Colo. She was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Seminole to V. C. Higdon and Annie Brown Higdon.

She graduated from Seminole High School. After graduation she moved to Oklahoma City and worked at the State Capitol. With the outbreak of World War II, she moved to California and became a welder with Kaiser Shipbuilding in Richmond.

She married James O. Spiller on Dec. 12, 1943, in Seminole. They lived in Oklahoma, California, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina while her husband served in the United States Marine Corps.

Upon his retirement in 1959, they moved to Norman and she worked at the University of Oklahoma. She was a supervisor in the then pioneering field of data processing.

Upon her retirement and her husband's second retirement, they were fortunate to be able to travel the world extensively.

Between trips abroad, she was active in the Norman and Oklahoma City Big Sisters organization, McFarlin Methodist Church, Military Wives Association, garden clubs, art associations and was runner-up for Mother of the Year for the State of Oklahoma.

For many years she helped her children with school projects, being den mother, sewing clothes for members of the family, etc. In her later years, she finally had the time to let her personal artistic talents flourish. She became an accomplished artist and calligrapher.

Her husband, parents and three brothers, Luther Higdon, Kenneth Higdon, Dave Higdon and one sister, Maudie Frances Higdon, preceded Mrs. Spiller in death.

Mrs. Spiller is survived by her daughter, Linda Maltezos and husband, George, of Denver, Colo.; her two sons, Dr. James D. Spiller, of Evansville, Ind., and Bruce A. Spiller, of San Diego, Calif.; her grandson, James W. Spiller of Evansville, Ind.; her sister, Hazel Seaman, of Dallas, Texas; her sister-in-law, Edna Higdon of Hutchinson, Kan. and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Honorary bearers for the services will be C.W. Skinner, George Maltezos and Charles Padgett.

Lucky Spooner

Funeral services for Konawa area resident, Harold H. "Lucky" Spooner are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ada Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Frank Trent officiating.

The VFW Post #11194 Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery and his grandson, Matthew Castleberry, will play Taps.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. tonight at the Criswell Funeral Home.

Services are under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home, Ada.

Spooner, 78, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006 at a local hospital. He was born July 4, 1928 in Iowa City, Iowa to Jasper H. and Lena Henryetta Fetkinhier Spooner.

He attended school in Iowa and entered the United States Navy on May 8, 1944 and received Naval education for nuclear reactors.

Spooner was a Master Chief, PO-E9 on the U.S.S. Enterprise, retiring in 1972. He served 25 years of active service and five years of reserve service.

He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

On May 3, 1986 he married Bonnie Ruth Crenshaw in Konawa.

Spooner was an active member and church deacon of the Ada Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church, and received a preacher’s license on Nov. 16, 1995.

In 1986, he was the Royal Ranger Commander, children’s church Sunday school teacher in Konawa, member of the church choir, president of the Konawa Rodeo Round-up Club Association, president of ORCA, leader of the town of Wolf Security Patrol, and parade coordinator for the Konawa Band Day.

He was the Voice of Democracy for Konawa, Latta, and Vanoss schools and the men’s ministry director for New Horizon Conference.

In 2000, he was the Eastern Oklahoma Conference International Pentecostal Holiness Church Field Supervisor for Disaster Relief, USA (DRUSA).

Spooner was the All American Commander of Post #11194 in 2001 and 2002, a member of the Oklahoma Veterans of Foreign wars, and the only commander for VFW post until December 2003.

In 2002-2003, he was the National Deputy Chief of Staff for the VFW. He was the service officer in Ada in 1994 and has helped conduct military honors for 648 deceased veterans and was on the Veterans Task Force for Congressman Tom Cole.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Dennis Spooner of California, Stanley Spooner of West Jordan, Utah and Robert Castleberry of Ada; four daughters, Rulene Scott of Binghamton, N.Y., Muriel Spooner of San Diego, Calif., Debbi Huddleston of Konawa and 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Bearers for the services will be Jim Christian, gene Wilson, Jim Haley, Tom Horn, Glen Gouge, Chet Boykin, Dave Bradley and Carl Tackett.

Calvin C. Springer

Former Seminole County resident Calvin C. Springer died on Sunday, May 28, 2006, in Ardmore.

No services, burial, or visitation is scheduled. Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler is handling the arrangements.

Springer was born in Tecumseh on Feb. 20, 1920, Thomas A. Springer and Martha A. (Greemore) Springer.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Springer married Dorothea Parris.

He worked as city superintendent of Brawley, Calif.

He was a resident of Ardmore before his death, and had previously lived in Seminole County.

Spring is survived by his wife, of Stillwater; one daughter, Peggy Beall of Craig, Colo.; two sisters; two grand-children; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Evelyn Stackhouse

Funeral services for longtime Seminole resident Evelyn Stackhouse are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Chris Stinnett officiating.

Interment is to follow at Tushka Cemetery in Tushka under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.

Evelyn Stackhouse passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole at the age of 90. She was born Jan. 16, 1916 in Sardis, Okla. to Jim

She moved to Seminole from McAlester in 1948 and was a longtime secretary for First National Bank in Seminole.

On Sept. 1, 1940 she married Byron Curtis Stackhouse in Atoka.

She then worked at M&M Oil Company for 10 years before retiring.

Her parents and husband (April 5, 1991) preceded her in death.

Surviving is her half brother, Harold Thompson of Kiowa; nieces, Lacy Cooper of Atoka and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cooper Jr. of Oklahoma City and longtime friends, Helen Mullen of Shawnee, Billie Richardson of Seminole and the Seminole Church of Christ Family.

Mary Frances Staff

Funeral services for former Seminole resident Mary Frances (Mauney) Staff are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Chapel, Tecumseh.

Charlie Clem will officiate and burial will follow at Brown Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

Staff, 64, of Shawnee died Sunday, June 18, 2006 in Shawnee. She was born May 4, 1942 in Atlanta, Texas to Frances H. and Mary Lee (Edmondson) Mauney.

She moved to Seminole in 1944 and attended Seminole schools. Following her marriage, she moved to Tecumseh and raised her six children. She has lived in the Tecumseh/Shawnee area since.

Staff was a homemaker who enjoyed fishing with her family and camping at Arbuckle Lake. She also enjoyed games and family fellowship.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star (Tecumseh Lodge).

Her parents and one brother, Robert Mauney preceded her in death.

Surviving are four sons, Rick Harmon of Shawnee, Tony Hartman of Ardmore, Kevin Staff of Tecumseh and Kenneth Staff of Stillwater; two daughters, Kelly Hartman of Henryetta and Marilyn Staff of Stillwater; two sisters, Margaret Ford of Seminole and Doris Floyd of Shawnee and six grandchildren.

Anna Stancoff

Funeral services for former longtime Seminole resident Anna Florence Stancoff are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel with Rev. Doyle Long to officiate.

Interment is to follow services at Little Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Stancoff, 86 passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006 in Muskogee. She was born July 24, 1919 in Skiatook to Leroy Sumpter and Melissa Hill.

On Dec. 22, 1941 in Seminole she married William Eldon Stancoff. He preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1998.

She was a mother and homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Seminole.

Her parents; husband; three brothers, Roy Sumpter, Isacc Sumpter and Donald Sumpter and four sisters, Viola Odell, Nellie Coffman, Emma Wilson and Sylvia Vance preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Don Rutledge of Muskogee and Gail and Ron Steele of Brownstown, Mich.; five grandchildren, Gary Rutledge, Lisa Huffer, Daniel Morse, Melissa Herring and Rebecca Bilberry; five great-grandchildren, Ali Huffer, Sy Huffer, Tess Huffer, Willow Bilberry, Luke Morse and Max Herring and one sister, Opal Armstrong of Seminole.

Pallbearers for the services will be Bob Coffman, Leonard Sumpter, Buddy Vance, Jack Armstrong, David Armstrong and Clifford Grisham.

Christopher Starkey

Graveside services for former Wewoka resident Christopher Dee Starkey are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Starkey, 46 of Norman, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006 in Norman. He was born Nov. 27, 1959 in Shawnee to Dee Starkey and Karleen Sue (Winkler) Starkey.

He attended Dale High School and was a member of Pink Baptist Church.

Starkey was self-employed as a construction laborer and he loved the outdoors including hunting and fishing.

He was a talented songwriter, singer and loved to play banjo and the guitar.

His grandparents, Ivan and Dorothy Winkler, E.L. Starkey and Agnes Ima Starkey all preceded him in death.

Surviving are his parents, Dee Starkey of Oaks and Karleen Sue Starkey of Norman; daughter, Toni Renea Starkey of Winston Salem, N.C.; son, Robert Lawrence Starkey of Winston Salem, N.C. and sister, Amanda Brenee Starkey of Yukon.
