Chloe Vennie Foutz, 69, of Lincoln, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007, in Lincoln, Neb. She was born in rural Seminole County near the small community of Vamoosa where she will be interred among five generations of her family.
Her paternal grandparents were pioneers from Indiana and "ran" in the opening of the Cherokee Strip when her father, Loren Herbert Foutz, was 18 months old.
Her maternal grandparents were pioneers from Tennessee and California via Texas.
They had permission to be in the Territory before statehood and Chloe’s mother, Venus Mattie "John" Gourley, was born not in Oklahoma but in Indian Territory.
After Chloe’s father’s death in 1945 her mother sold the farm and moved the family into town.
Chloe was a 1956 graduate of Seminole High School; Southwestern Junior College (1958), Keene, Texas; Union College (1961), Lincoln, Nebraska; and the University of Illinois (1962), Urbana-Champaign, where she received a Master of Science degree in Library Science.
Before completing her master’s degree, Chloe was asked to return to the Union College Library as its first full-time public services librarian.
She accepted the position and remained for 41 years, the last 16 as library director, until her retirement in 2003, when she was designated Library Director emeritus by the Union College Board of Directors.
She was a member of the Lincoln Library Association, the Nebraska Library Association, the Mountain Plains Library Association, the American Library Association and the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Librarians that she helped establish in 1981.
As Union College alumni president, she presided over the celebration of Union’s Centennial in 1986. Her passion for record preservation was focused on the organization and preservation of Union’s archives and collection of memorabilia for the Heritage Room at the college’s library.
Since 1958 she had been a member of the College View Seventh-day Adventist Church, Lincoln, where she served as the wedding coordinator, deaconess, leader in several children’s and youth programs and coordinator of various other activities.
Chloe was an avid family historian and a dedicated long-time member of the Lincoln-Lancaster Genealogical Society serving in numerous positions.
One of her true joys of genealogy
was finding and meeting some "shirt-tail" cousins on several sides of the family whom she would not have known otherwise.
In retirement Chloe remained active in LLCGS, volunteered at the Union College Library and enjoyed being "Aunt CoCo" to her grandnephew, Nolan and grandnieces, Lauren and Katey, children of Adam and Erin Foutz of Lincoln. Chloe was known for her sense of humor and her zest for life.
Chloe was preceded in death by her parents, Loren Herbert and Venus Mattie Gourley Foutz; and brothers, Wayne Elmo Foutz, Russell Loren Foutz, Joseph Erick Foutz and Rex Wade Foutz.
