Bartus Ray Barnhill, of Shawnee, passed away Aug. 21, in Shawnee.
Family received friends Sunday, at Walker Funeral
The service was held Aug. 25, at 1p.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Shawnee Ward, 1501 E. Independence.
Officiating was Bishop Michael Meyers.
Bartus was born Sept. 8, 1920,in Norman, to Ray and Elise Barnhill
He married Bertha Williams and was a member of the United States Army.
Bartus was a Quality Control Engine Tester at Tinker Air Force Base.
His memberships include; President of NARFE Chapter 1983-1987, member of the LDS Family History Center for several years, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Bartus served as a home teacher to many families since 1963 and formed many lasting friendships. He served on many church assignments at Welfare Farms and the Cannery, Bishops Storehouse.
He served in several church positions: High Priest Group Leader several times, Explorer Leader in Bishoprics. He was always the standby helper in the ward if anyone ever needed help with anything.
He loved to serve others just as our Savior Jesus Christ and was faithful to the end. He loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Preceding him in death are his Parents, Wife, 1 Brother: C. E. Barnhill, 1 Sister: Della Prince, 2 Great-Grandchildren, and 1 Stepson: Elmer Carr.
Survivors include 7 Children: Vivian and Roger Yandell of Shawnee, Harrison and Mary Barnhill of Valiant, Victor and Amber Barnhill of Georgia, Gerald and Becky Barnhill of Utah, Paula and Bert Swenson of Utah, Brinda And Russell Potter of Utah, Charlene And Brad Orton of Utah, 1 Step-Son: Dale Mayberry of Noble, 32 Grandchildren, 31 Great-Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren, 2 Brothers: Truman Barnhill and Elizabeth of Norman, and B.T. Barnhill and Arlene of Norman, 3 Sisters: Vina Harris Norman, Elsie and George Shaw Moore, Cherry and Terry Kirshner Norman, Numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Walter Barrowman
Funeral services for former Seminole resident, Walter Edward Barrowman, Jr., are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Henninger-Allen Funeral Home, Enid, with Bro. Bob Rogers officiating.
Burial is to follow at Isabella Cemetery, Isabella.
Barrowman, 66 of the Enid area, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 as a result of an accident. He was born in Eldorado, Ark., on Aug. 31, 1941 to Walter Edward and Ruth Barrowman.
He worked and lived in Seminole for many years and attended Little Mission Church. Barrowman also worked for Big Yank and Wal-Mart.
Surviving is his wife, Shirley Barrowman of Enid; five daughters: Sara Nuckols of Wewoka, Kay Wakefield of Holdenville, Kim Maynard of Spalding, LaDonna Vanlandingham of Seminole, and LaDena Barrowman of Texas; one son, Mike Barrowman; two stepdaughters: Claudette Leonard of Pennsylvania, and Dona Robertson of Enid; and one stepson, George Call of Pennsylvania.
In addition, his four sisters: Mary Russell of Midwest City, JoAnn McGhee of Oklahoma City, Linda Barrowman of Okarche, and Paula McCoy of Beggs; two brothers: Jerry and Larry Barrowman of the Oklahoma City area; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Esther Barton
Esther Mae Barton died Sunday, Dec. 14. She was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Morris, to William and Cordelia (Frasier) Coker.
She and her family moved to Wetumka where she grew up from a small child to the age of 19. As an adult, she moved to Oklahoma City for a number of years. In 1967 she moved back to Holdenville where she resided at the time of her death.
Barton worked many years as a cook at Bobbie’s Restaurant, Holdenville Nursing Home, and Holdenville High School, where she retired in 1984.
On May 30, 1954 she rededicated her life to the Lord at Harvest Time Tabernacle where she attended, Reverend Richard Turner was her Pastor. Later, she attended the Holdenville Pentecostal Holiness Church until the time of her death.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Sanders, of the home and Maxine Peters, of Holdenville; son, Roy Rubottom, of Wewoka; sister, Jewell Coker, of Wewoka; nine grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and nineteen great-great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was husband, Jack Barton; sisters, Myrtle Bell and Evie Green; brothers, Roy Coker, Raymond Coker, Orville Coker, and Monroe Coker; son, Odell Pinion; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, in Holdenville, with Reverend Jerry Orsburn and Reverend Rick Madron officiating.
Interment will follow at Holdenville Cemetery under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Chris Rubottom, Michael Peters, Paul Pinion, Shane Peters, Brent Peters, and Brian Orsburn. Honorary bearers are Bobby Peters, Billy Peters, Carl Griggs, and Bill Robinson.
Jessie Beardslee
Funeral services for Wewoka native Jessie Velma Beardslee were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crossroads Fellowship with Rev. Al Workman officiating.
Burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services were under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home, Odessa, Texas.
Beardslee died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. She was born Dec. 24, 1913 in Wewoka to Carlos and Mattie Streater Newman.
Prior to her marriage to Chauncey Beardslee in 1931, she attended Ong Elementary School; graduated from Wewoka High School; and attended college in Ada.
At the age of 18 she was the youngest member of the Rebecca Lodge in the State of Oklahoma and very quickly advanced through all the chairs.
She retired from Phillips Petroleum Company after many years as a geological secretary and was active in the Jane Phillips Sorority, serving as president and as Janues editor that showcased her talent as an artist.
After retirement she continued her interest in politics and current affairs, spending many hours painting and with her crafts.
Her parents; husband; and two grandchildren, preceded her in death.
Surviving is her son, Rick Beardslee of Midland, Texas; daughter, Vicky Simpson of Odessa, Texas; two granddaughters; two grandsons; two step-grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Elvin Beaty
Graveside services for longtime Seminole resident Elvin "Dale" Beaty are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Little Cemetery with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.
Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Beaty, 44, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 in Seminole. He was born Aug. 29, 1963 in Mena, Ark., to Harld Wayne Beatty and Bertie Belvina (Author) Stone.
He was a welder for Hayes Axle and Willow Furniture Company. On May 6, 1985 he married Shirley Jean Beaty in Seminole.
Surviving is his wife of the home; three sons: Derik Harris of Ada, Andrew Beaty and Cash Beaty, both of Seminole; one daughter, Brandy Cannon of Wicks, Ark.; one brother, Jerry Beaty of Cove, Ark.; one sister, Roberta Blackard Ebbs of Bartlesville; one grandchild; his mother, Bertie Stone; his father, Wayne Beaty; and stepfathers: Jimmy Stone and Ernest "E.P." Sorrels.
Casket bearers will be: Cash Beaty, Justin Blackard, Andrew Beaty, Derik Harris, Josh brown, and Jerry Beaty.
Clarence Benard
Funeral services for Clarence Joseph Benard, Sr. are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday at the Earlsboro School Auditorium with Rev. James Grayson, Sr. officiating and Rev. L.C. White assisting.
Interment will follow at Earlsboro Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Clarence Joseph Benard, Sr., 53 year-old, longtime Earlsboro resident passed from this life Sunday, March 2, 2008 at his home in Earlsboro. He was born Nov. 17, 1954 in Beaumont, Texas to parents Elmer Benard and Mary (Thompson) Benard.
Clarence graduated from Douglas School in Wewoka. He married Veronica Anita Harris on June 3, 1977 in Spencer, Okla.
Clarence was also a member of Ware Chapel C.M.E. in Earlsboro.
Clarence served in the United States National Guard from 1977 to 1982. He is also a former member of the Earlsboro Volunteer Fire Department.
He worked for Exxon-Mobil for over 20 years retiring in October of 2005.
Together he and his wife Veronica has owned and operated Tapps BBQ Restaurant in Earlsboro.
He also enjoyed spending his time fishing and hunting and being a shade tree mechanic, helping other people and he never met a stranger.
Clarence leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 30 years, Veronica Benard of the home; his mother, Mary Miles of Wewoka; one son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Benard, Jr. and his wife Stacey of Earlsboro; and two daughters and a son-in-law, Elisha Benard of Earlsboro and Amber and her husband Ralph Davis of Earlsboro.
Also surviving are three brothers, Fredrick Johnson of Oklahoma City, Wayne Miles of Wewoka, and Rodney Harris and his wife Glenda of Spencer, Okla.; and three sisters, Emma Jones of Wewoka, Lawana Johnson of Oklahoma City and Anetta Johnson of Wewoka.
Other survivors include Veronica’s brother Maurice Harris and his wife Audrey of Shawnee; Veronica’s two sisters, Irma Cheatham of Earlsboro and Darlene Winrow of Earlsboro, also survive.
Five grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye, also survive: Clarence: Phenisha Benard Washburn; Kerri Benard; Martell Davis; Eli Benard and C.J. Benard.
Also surviving is a host of other family and dear friends.
His father, Elmer Benard; his grandparents; and his mother-in-law, Lucy Harris, precede Clarence in death.
Clarence was also preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Charlene Berry in 2007.
Kenneth Bergman
Funeral services for former Seminole businessman Kenneth Harlan Bergman were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church of Elk City.
Interment followed at Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City, under the direction of Martin Funeral Home, Elk City.
Bergman, 74 of Elk City, died Friday, June 13, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 13, 1933 near Medford, Okla., to Charles and Edna (Crowe) Bergman.
He was raised in Pond Creek, Okla., and graduated from Pond Creek High School. On Jan. 13, 1953 he married Beverly Dowe in Enid; together they raised three children.
Bergman served his country in the U.S. Army at Panama during the Korean Conflict. After discharge he attended Northwestern State College in Alva, Okla.
He worked for Gold Spot Dairy for a number of years and as a chemical salesman for Hedges and Gaden of Seiling, Okla.
Bergman lived in Prague for 29 years and worked as district sales manager with Occidental Chemical, and later as a salesman with Seminole Ford.
Since his retirement, he has made his home in Elk City for the past two years.
His parents preceded him n death.
Surviving is his wife of the home; one daughter, Janis Kincaid of Elk City; two sons: Mark Bergman of Stillwater and Brian Bergman of Oklahoma City; three brothers: Charles Bergman of Enid, Robert Bergman of Loveland, Colo., and Derald Bergman of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Mary Bergsten
Mary Ellen Bergsten was born June 3, 1940, to Orval and Norma Casteel, in Bowlegs. They later moved to the Prairie Valley community where she graduated from high school in 1958.
She attended the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing, receiving a diploma in nursing, in 1961.
Mary and Cecil were married June 23, 1961. They had three children, Steven Bergsten (wife Lana), of Hurst, Texas, David Bergsten (wife Jamie), of Shawnee, and Cheryl Pfeffer (husband James), of Collinsville.
Mary returned to the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and received a B.A. degree in Sociology.
She worked in nursing for 40 years and from 1969 to 2001 she was employed at the Shawnee Medical Center Hospital, where she retired, in October, of 2001.
After retiring, she purchased a quilting machine and quilted for the public. She was a member of the Spinning Spools Quilt Guild and made many baby quilts, which were donated to community projects.
She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, assisted with Bible School and served on several committees.
She was preceded in death by her dad, Orval Casteel and grandson, Andrew Bergsten.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil, of the home; 3 children; 2 daughters-in-law; 1 son-in-law; mother, Norma Casteel, of Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Les and Jeanette Casteel, of Harrison, Ark.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Royce Davis, from Midwest City, Patricia and James Fowler, of Plano, Texas, Kathy and Rick Crosby, of Bethel; 4 grandchildren, Ellen, Emma, and Ethan Pfeffer, and Olivia Bergsten; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, from Seminole; and the anticipated birth of grandson, Tyler Bergsten, in January.
Visitation will be held for Mary on Friday, Dec. 19, at Resthaven Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Fairview Baptist Church, with graveside services at Resthaven to follow
Mary wished to have donations made to Unity Cancer Center, in Shawnee, in lieu of flowers.
