John Lively
Longtime Wewoka Civic Leader Passes
John Edward Lively was born on October 31, 1951, in Dallas, Texas, the third son of the late Henry McKee Lively and Mary Alice Keeton Lively.
John came into this world as a gentle and caring soul who loved God and his family and who had a remarkable sense of loyalty and genuine concern for the welfare of everyone he knew.
Even before he was old enough to attend school, his life was defined by the word "integrity."
John could always be counted on to tell the truth, even when lying would have spared him punishment.
When he was only nine, he turned himself in to a Dallas police officer for breaking the law earlier that day by carrying another nine-year-old on the rear fender of his bicycle.
As punishment, he was sentenced to a full Saturday of watching bicycle safety films.
Majoring in history and philosophy, John was an honor graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and an honor graduate of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary where he earned the Master of Divinity degree.
He was ordained as a minister of Word and Sacrament in The United Presbyterian Church of the United States of America in 1980.
For close to 30 years, he served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wewoka.
Following his seminary training, John enrolled as a student at Oklahoma City University School of Law where he graduated three years later before successfully passing the Oklahoma Bar Examination.
In addition to serving as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wewoka, John simultaneously practiced law with the law firm of Huser, Huser and Lively in Wewoka and served as municipal judge and chief prosecutor for the Seminole Indian Nation.
In 1977, John married the love of his life, Nancy Jones, and together they brought into this world three wonderful children: Lance Robert Lively of Tulsa, Jenny May Lively Gonzales of Norman, and Lynne Ellen Lively of Wewoka.
John passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2008.
John is survived by his loving and devoted family: his wife, Nancy Lively of Wewoka; three children; daughter-in-law, Maren Lively; son-in-law, Ben Gonzales; three grandchildren, Aaron, Alex, and Isabel Gonzales; his brothers and their spouses, Bob and Mary Lynn Lively of Austin, Texas, Jim and Karen Lively of Dallas, Texas, and Bill and Mickey Lively of Dallas, Texas; mother-in-law, May Jones of Dallas, Texas; brother-in-law and his spouse, Robert and Rae Jones of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law Marilyn Coleman of Biloxi, Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John’s was a life well lived in that at a very young age he came to understand that he had been placed in this world to love, which he did with an uncommon grace and wisdom.
Because of his gentle ways, all who were privileged to know John managed to glimpse what Jesus likely had in mind when he taught us to pray, "on earth as it is in heaven."
