Elsa Schulze

Memorial services for longtime Seminole County resident Elsa Lavon Schulze are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Jim Knowles officiating.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.

Lavon Schulze passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Schulze was born Dec. 21, 1929 in Cushing, Okla., to parents, Clyde and Jewell (Bilke) Meyers.

She moved to Seminole from Cushing in 1963. Mrs. Schulze was a legal secretary for Bishop-Wantland Law Office; Gipson, Johnston, McMains Law Office; and Kevin Walker.

Mrs. Schulze also worked as an editor at the Cushing Daily Citizen.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Church and was involved with the Food Bank for many years.

Her husband, Jim; son, Ted; and brothers, Leon and Bill Meyers, precede her in death.

Lavon is survived by son, Cliff Schulze of Oklahoma City; three sisters-in-law: Nova Meyers of Cushing, Michelle Meyers of Aurora Grande, Calif., and Sela Schulze of Durant, Okla.; and brother-in-law, George and his wife, Eileen Schulze.

She is also survived by three grandchildren: Zach Schulze of Ft. Smith, Ark., Stephen Schulze of Goldsby, Okla., and Melissa Schulze of Shawnee.

The family has requested that donations be made to the local food bank, which is administered by the Interfaith Social Ministries, 813 N. Main Street, Seminole, OK 74868.

Joe Scott

Joe Scott, 65 passed away on Dec. 9, at Solora Hospital in Shawnee.

Joe was a longtime Seminole resident. He was born on Dec. 9, 1943 to CB and Mary Scott, in Oklahoma City and was raised in Seminole. He graduated from East Central University and enlisted into the US Marine Corp in 1963. His military career spanned over 29 years with multiple tours in Vietnam and Cambodia earning him the rank of Lt. Col. After his retirement in 1992 Joe returned to Seminole.

He married Jamie Angel.

He is survived by one son, Derek and his wife Ellen Scott, of Virginia; grandchildren, Katherine Hartney, Steven Mobley, Kellie Mobley and Kandy Mobley, all of Virginia. His beloved sister, Diana Kay and brother-in-law Dick Kay, of Bowlegs; and niece Djuana Ashcraft, of Edmond, also survive him.

Services are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12, at 12 p.m. at the Historic Strother Chapel, at Maple Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home from 10 -11:30 a.m.

A reception will immediately follow the graveside service at the Best Western Hotel in Seminole.

Ruby Sexton

Funeral services for lifelong Konawa resident Ruby Sexton are scheduled to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008, at the Swearingen Funeral Chapel in Konawa, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.

Richard Winters and Carl Wills will officiate.

Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery.

Sexton died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Ada, at the age of 89.

She was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Konawa, to Joe Norman and Sadie (Fuller) Norman.

Sexton attended Summer Chapel and Vamoosa High School, and was a longtime clerk at the Dixie Store in Konawa.

On Aug. 26, 1937, she married Howard Sexton in Konawa. He preceded her in death in 1992.

Sexton was a member of the Church of Christ in Konawa.

Her hobbies included quilting and crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Irene Stockton and Mable Norman; and a brother, Ray Norman.

Sexton is survived by a son, Dewayne Sexton of Konawa; three daughters, Mary Williams of Konawa, Kay Eason of Boise, Idaho, and Nancy Lemmings of Midwest City; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Luella Sharp

Funeral services for longtime Konawa resident Luella Marie (Hutton) Sharp are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Konawa, with Carl Hayes officiating.

Interment is to follow at Vista Cemetery, located west of Konawa, with arrangements under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Konawa.

Sharp, 82, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at her residence outside of Konawa. She was born Aug. 1, 1925 in Drumright to Tom Hutton and Addie (Ray) Hutton.

On Nov. 15, 1925 she married Allen Ray Sharp in Shawnee and he preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 2006.

She owned and operated the D&B Superite in Konawa for several years and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Konawa.

Her parents; one son, Kay Anthony Sharp; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Bill and Charlie Hutton, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by four sons: Bob Sharp of Harrah, Max Sharp of Konawa, Jim Sharp of Asher and Bill Sharp of Oklahoma City; one brother, Richard Hutton of Norman; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Serving as casket bearers will be Chris Sharp, Darin Sharp, Gary Sharp, Michael S. Sharp, Michael A. Sharp and Heath Lowry.

Honorary bearers will be Gene Dennie, Edd Bottoms, Bob Lester, Lillard Berry, Randy Dennie, James Earl Tooley and Eddie Wayne Bottoms.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Victory Hospice of Ada.

Ellis Shaw

Funeral services for lifelong Konawa resident Ellis Shaw are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Konawa with Pastor Pam Shirk officiating.

Burial is to follow at Vista Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Konawa.

Ellis H. Shaw passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at his residence in Konawa at the age of 91. He was born Dec. 25, 1916 in Konawa to Rufus Taylor Shaw and Julia Mae (Slaughter) Shaw.

Ellis married Annie Vee (Hale) on May 30, 1936 in Konawa and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2006.

He worked in the greater area oil fields all of his life having worked for Johnson & Bates Drilling in Konawa for several years.

Ellis was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Konawa.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Laretta and Bob Branscum of Duncan, Paula and Don Gallagher of Konawa and Kay and Bill West of Seminole; one sister, Norma Mosley of Konawa; one brother, Leslie "Jim" Shaw of Roosevelt, Utah; sister-in-law, Maggie Shaw of Woodburn, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Annie (Shaw) Taylor and four brothers.

Serving as casket bearers will be Randy Taylor, Cody Baldridge, Brett Shaw, Mark Shaw, Jamie Branscum, Brandon Gallagher, Bill Frankovich, Shawn Spencer and Bobby Branscum.

Leslie Shaw

Leslie (Jim) Shaw, age 89, of Roosevelt, Utah, died Friday, Nov. 7, at the Basin Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Roosevelt, Utah.

He was born March 30, 1919, in Konawa, to Rufus and Julia (Slaughter) Shaw. He was the fourth of seven children.

Shaw was raised on a farm. He served his country in the Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippines.

He worked in the oil fields in Central America, Alaska, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana, as an air driller, and as a driller on rotary rigs.

The last 50 years of his life he lived and worked in the Basin.

He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on March 29, 2008.

He is survived by his sister, Norma Jean (Lloyd) Mosley; nieces, Kathryn (Keith) Lesher, Paula (Don) Gallagher, and Loretta (Bob) Branscum.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Rufus and Julia Shaw; five brothers, Ellis, Sanford, Floyd, William, and Bill.

A graveside service was held at Roosevelt Memorial Park, in Utah, with Military Honors presented by the Roosevelt American Legion Post #64

Bobby Shelton

Funeral services for Bobby Gene Shelton, 69 of Byng, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Abundant Life Tabernacle with Rev. Mickey Keith officiating.

Burial is to follow at Rosedale Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Criswell Funeral Home, Ada.

Mr. Shelton died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at his home. He was born Jan. 5, 1939 in Chickasha to John and Minola Akin Shelton.

He attended grade school at Willard, and graduated from Horace Man High School in 1957 as an honor student.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959, owned and operated a domino parlor, "My Place", from 1964 to 2005; and also owned "Quality Storm Shelters" from 1975 until his retirement in 2004.

Shelton was a member of Life Community Church, where he served as usher and greeter.

His son, Jeffrey Bob Shelton (May 25, 1991); parents, John and Minola Shelton; and infant sister, Patsy June; brother-in-law, Heber O’Brien; sister-in-law, Linda Shelton; and mother- and father-in-law, Jeff and Sylvia Daniel, preceded him n death.

Survivors include: his wife, Jo An Shelton of the home; one daughter, Tammy Dew and husband, Jimmy of Union Hill; two grandsons: Dustin Dew and fiancée Kala Dobbins, and Dakotta Dew and fiancée Katie Henson; other daughter (niece), Carol Rushton and family of Shreveport, La.; three sisters: Bernidine O’Brien of Ada, Sue Johnson and husband Arley of Ada, and Violet Sliger and husband Bob of Ada; brothers: Clell Shelton of Austin, Texas, Ted Shelton and wife Billie of Ahloso, Bill Shelton of Ada, and Jerry Shelton and wife Elaine of Ada; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Bearers will be: Mitch Shelton, Michael O’Brien, Jim Johnson, Bobby K. Sliger, Rick Shelton, and Jerry Lynn Shelton. The Vanoss Baseball Team will serve as honorary bearers.

William Shipman

William Emanuel (Bill) Shipman died on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Oklahoma Veterans’ Center, in Norman. He was born on March 24, 1926, in Osage, to Walter V. and Leanna J. (Ragland) Shipman.

Bill attended school in Oklahoma, in Cleveland and Stonewall before graduating from Holdenville High School in 1944. After high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during WWII.

After the War, Bill attended East Central State College at Ada and graduated with a BA degree from College of the Ozarks, in Clarksville, Ark. in 1950. He earned a Master’s Degree from North Texas State University in 1960.

His first teaching/coaching job was at Magazine, in Arkansas. In the summer of 1950, Bill’s Army National Guard unit was mobilized for duty during the Korean Conflict. He served in Korea with the 937th Field Artillery Battalion.

Upon his return from service in Korea, Bill married Beth Walker, in Wewoka. He taught and coached in Bowlegs, and Mena, Ark. before moving to Texas. In Texas, he taught and coached in Irving, Denton, Andrews, Lewisville, and Abilene before returning to Denton and Andrews for a second time.

Bill was "Teacher of the Year" in Andrews, in 1964. He retired from coaching in Andrews in 1983. Bill then served as the manager of the Andrews Chamber of Commerce until 1987. Bill was an ambassador for American football in Europe when he served as the head coach of the Hamburg, Germany Silver Eagles American football team in 1992 and 1993.

Bill was a lifetime member of the Texas High School Coaches’ Association, serving as a Director and its President in 1980. He was privileged to coach in the Texas High School All-Star football game in 1974 and was elected to the THSCA Hall of Honor in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Beth, of Maud; his son and daughter, Walter L. and Namiqa A. Shipman, of Big Spring, Texas; his son, Bret W. Shipman, of Maud; his grandson, William Staton Shipman, of Austin, Texas; his nephew, Gary Smelser, of Aubrey, Texas; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mimi and Ray Lee, of Maud.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mildred Smelser and Mary Bramblett Turner.

A Memorial Service was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, in Maud.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, in Maud, or to a charity of your choice.
