Hazel Smith

Lifelong Seminole resident Hazel Fern Smith passed away on Oct. 27, in Seminole at the age of 76.

She was born on July 15, 1932 in Seminole, to Randall J. and Ruby Annabelle (Smyth) Kelley.

She married Gary Kent Smith on Aug. 29, 1950; he preceded her in death on March 26, 1970.

She graduate from Seminole High School in 1950 and was a former Tri-City Christian Center member.

She is survived by one son, Kent Smith, of Edmond, and two daughters and sons-in-law: Cindi and Gary Mize and Kristy and Curtis Tatum, all of Seminole.

She is also survived by six grandchildren: Randall Mize, Blake Mize, Kendra Smith, Cory Smith, Carlye Tatum and Cullen Tatum and four great grandchildren, Autumn, Abby and Garrett Mize, of Seminole and Eli Stafford, of Edmond.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gary Smith on March 26, 1970, one brother, Randall Kelley and one sister, Nancy Smith.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6465 South Yale Avenue, Ste. 312, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74136-7804

Private family services are scheduled for Oct. 28, with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Seminole.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home 100 W. Strothers Seminole.

Jerdie Smith

Funeral services for Jerdie A. Smith will be held Friday, Aug. 29, at 10a.m., at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Sand Creek Cemetery, in Seminole County.

Smith was born April 25, 1944, in Okemah to Alvie A. and Gracie Edna (Landtroop) Smith Alsup.

He died Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Seminole, at the age of 64.

Preceding him in death were his father and three brothers.

He is survived by his mother, one brother; Alvie Ken Smith, four sisters; Dottie Logan, of Vista, Calif., Millie Jenkins, of Seminole, Annie Baumgardner, of Henryetta, and Kay Brandt, of Okemah, and step-sister, Lorene Cunningham, of Westfork, Ariz.

Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home and officiated by Rev. L.D. Davis.

Joe Smith

Memorial services for former Seminole County resident, Joe Allen Smith, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the fellowship hall at Wewoka Church of Christ. Palmer Smith will officiate the services.

Smith died Sunday, April 13, 2008 in Ft. Smith, Ark. He was born Dec. 5, 1942 in Holdenville to Alcidean Choate and Bonds Allen Smith.

He served two terms in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. In his younger days he participated in rodeo and he continued to enjoy horses and the cowboy way.

His parents preceded him in death.

Surviving is his special friend and caregiver, Debbie Evans of Ft. Smith; one daughter, Dusty Jo Smith of Oregon; one granddaughter; one sister, Billie Dean Self of Seminole; and one brother, Palmer Smith of Prague.

Roy Smith

A celebration of life is scheduled for Wewoka resident Roy Albert Smith at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Wewoka, with Russell Ryker officiating.

He died July 16, 2008, at the age of 78 years at his residence in Wewoka.

Roy was born in Byars, Okla., on Nov. 18, 1929, to Albert J. Smith and Ora Lynn Gosnell Smith Jackson.

He grew up in Asher and attended Asher Public Schools.

Roy married Lovey "Pat" Jones on Dec. 24, 1952, in Wewoka and during his life he was employed and owned Jackson/Smith Super Market.

Mr. Smith enjoyed going to the live Stock Actions, fishing, being outside and was devoted to his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Lovey "Pat" Smith, the love of his life; one brother, Ray Smith; and a granddaughter, Sabrina Dean Mathews.

Survivors include his daughter, Rosanne L. Mathews of Shawnee; two sons, Randy A. Smith and wife DeAnna of El Reno, Bryan K. Smith and wife Debbie of Wewoka; and a brother, Larry Jackson of Rush Springs.

Also surviving Smith are eight granddaughters: Misty and Alvie Watters, Stephanie and Kelly Stafford, Stacy and Jeremiah Johnson, Tonya Mathews, Cindy and Anthony Scott, Kimberly Smith, Allison Jones, and Jessica Crain;

Thirteen great-grandchildren: Ashley, Brittany, Annah, Elijah, Seth, Canyon, Micah, Cierra, Isaiah, Trinity, and three on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Alvie Watters, Darnell Mathews, Lester Williams, George Porter, Ricky Davis, and Terry Davis.

Honorary Bearers will be Misty Watters, Stephanie Stafford, Stacy Johnson, Tonya Mathews, Cindy Scott, and Kimberly Smith.

Services under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

William Smith

Funeral services for longtime Asher area resident William "Howard" Smith are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa with Bro. John Henry Lippard officiating.

Burial is to follow at Konawa Cemetery with services being under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Konawa. The family requests western attire at the funeral service.

Howard passed from this life on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Unity North Hospital in Shawnee, at the age of 86 years. He was born Sept. 26, 1921 in Tahlequah to Floyd Orville and Lydia Ann (Whisenent) Smith.

Howard enlisted in the United States Army on July 21, 1943 and proudly served his country during World War II. He received an honorable discharge on Nov. 3, 1943.

On May 19, 1945 Howard married the love of his life, Mildred L. Duncan. Together they shared a wonderful loving marriage of over 63 years. One of his greatest accomplishments was raising three sons and four daughters.

After owning and operating his own dairy farm, Howard began working for Canadian Valley Electric Coop. He worked as a lineman and retired in 1982 after 33 years of service.

Following retirement he began his lifelong dream of owning and operating a large cattle ranch. He lived the life of a cowboy on his Rocking H Ranch outside of Asher.

Howard trained horses and also was known for going on 100 mile trail rides down to Tahlequah. He always said that he wanted to go out riding his horse and living the cowboy life.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Mildred of the home; seven children: Anthony and Phyllis Smith of Stratford, Joyce Ann and Dan McMillian of Konawa, Patricia Covey of Asher, Boyd and Melody Smith of Macomb, Gary Smith of Oklahoma City, Bonnie and Gary Grant of Wewoka and Christina and Stephen Lancaster of Stratford; two brothers: Carl Smith and his wife Madeline of Roseburg, Ore., and Bobby Gene Smith and his wife Pauline of Cement, Okla.; one sister, Mary Marie Smith and her husband David of Chickasha; grandchildren: Louis Anthony Smith, Jr., Katrina and Andrew Walton, Tony and Lori Pack, Jerry Don and Pam Pack, Chris and Scarlet Pack; Jim and Diane McMillan, Mike and Kim McMillan, Shane and Phyllis McMillan, Deliliah and James Basler, Mona and David Ridley, Edward Seal, Bear Seal, Brandy Smith, Kelly Smith, Dennis Smith, Lisa and Justin Helton, William Grant, Joe "Logan" Lancaster, and William Bodie Lancaster; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Serving as casket bearers will be: Tony Pack, Jerry Don Pack, Chris Pack, Dennis Smith, William Grant and David Ridley.

Honorary bearers will be: Eddie Seal, Bear Seal, Louis Anthony Smith Jr., Joey Pack, Jonny Pack, Scott Hughes and Bud Hill.

Billie Sneed

Funeral services for former Wewoka resident Billie R. Sneed are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stout-Phillips Funeral Chapel with Dr. Tommy Clark of Oklahoma City to officiate.

Interment is to follow at Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka.

Sneed died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. He was born Oct. 11, 1924 in Wilson, Okla., to Jesse and Lilah (Walker) Sneed.

He attended Wewoka Schools and entered the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in Germany as a marksman and SFC.

Sneed was awarded the Eisenhower award twice and he served as a cook for Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Following his discharge, he joined the 45th National Guard Unit of Wewoka and retired after 30 years of service.

He was of the Baptist faith and belonged to the VFW and Coon Hunters Association.

His parents; daughter, Ruby; sons: Charles Ray and Jesse Sneed; brother, Cecil Sneed; and sister, Faye Chambers, preceded him in death.

Surviving is his wife, Ruby Dana Sneed of Midwest City; children: Dana Sallee of Wewoka, Johncy Dufresne of Kansas City, Mo., Jackie Miller of Whitesboro, Texas, Kathy Brickey and Billie Sneed, both of Midwest City; siblings: Don Sneed of Holdenville, J.C. Sneed of Wewoka, and Rita Campbell of Texas; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Miguel Solano

Miguel J. Solano, Jr., 26, of Lawrence, died Friday, Nov. 14, at his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1982 at Sacramento, Calif., to Miguel J. And Karen Steele Solano, Sr.

He was currently a student at Haskell University. Survivors include his wife, Kesha D. Walker; son, Ezekiel Joseph Solano, two daughters, Chesape Sarai and Lynn Arianna Solano, all of Lawrence, Kan.; his father, Miguel Solano, Sr.; his mother, Karen Steele; two Sisters, Monique Solano, of Novato, Calif., and Elena Solano, of Sacramento, Calif.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in California at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Solano Children and sent in care of the funeral home, 3821 W. 6th St., Lawrence, Kan. 66049.

Kathy Southern

Dear Lord, my path may be strange; it may be dark. Help me not to fear since you light the way I can safely follow you.

Longtime Seminole resident Kathy Sue Southern passed away on Dec. 6, in Shawnee, the age of 55.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1953, in Seminole, to Darrel Watson and Juanita Margaret Lackey.

She was a member of Gleener’s Holiness Church.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father, sister, Patricia Sharp, brother Joe Gary Watson, and son, Stoney Southern.

She is survived by one daughter, Shana Southern, of Seminole; daughter-in-law, Angel Southern, of Seminole; one niece Kelley McGirt, of Edmond, special friends, Eloise and Mary Kay Williams, and Luther Carpitche, of Seminole, Kathryn Roy, of Wewoka, Oklahoma and Shirley Phillips, of Ada, he is also survived by Danaca SuMarie Southern, Baylee Johnson, and Mackenzie Inslee.

Pallbearers will be Jason Phillips, Jeremy King, Justin Williams, Lee Rose, Benji Mendenhall and Jessie Johnson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Chesser officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery.

Oh Lord I love you because you first loved me.

Billy Sparks

Billy "Bill" Earl Sparks was born on Jan. 16, 1934, and passed away on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the age of 74. Bill was born, raised and educated in and around Konawa.

He married Willetta Faye Allen, of Seminole on June 9, 1955, and had 53 wonderful years of marriage. They raised three children, William Earl Sparks, of Tulsa, Gaye Catcher, of Ft. Gibson, and Robert Sparks, of Tahlequah. He had two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Martha Sparks.

Bill began his working career for Montgomery Ward, in Shawnee, and worked his way up the retail ladder to store manager before leaving to complete his college degree at East Central University, in Industrial Sciences.

Bill began teaching at Varnum Public Schools while he obtained an Associates Degree in Police Science from St. Gregory, in Shawnee. Thereafter, he embarked on his life long career in law enforcement beginning in Seminole where he obtained the position of Assistant Chief of Police.

In 1973, Bill left the Police Department and went to work for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. While working for the O.S.B.I., Bill attended and graduated from the FBI Investigative School, in Quantico, Va., obtained a polygraph operators license, and was trained at other premier law enforcement facilities around the United States bringing that experience back to assist local law enforcement agencies in Oklahoma. From that time on, Bill never left Southeastern Oklahoma.

Bill began his career with the O.S.B.I. as a resident agent in Seminole, and in 1973 was the case agent in charge of the riot at McAlester Penitentiary. While working for the O.S.B.I., Bill obtained the rank of the Bureau’s first Deputy Inspector and later was promoted to Inspector over the Regional office at Antlers. During this time, Bill obtained his Masters Degree from Northeastern State University, in Tahlequah. After a long and distinguished career with the O.S.B.I., Bill retired in 1990 due to health concerns. Since that time he and Willetta lived in Fort Gibson until the time of his death.

At Bill’s request, graveside services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Seminole, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Chris Stinnett will officiate.
