Funeral services for lifelong Seminole resident Wilma Plank Tappe are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday at Ideal Street Baptist Church with Leo Streater officiating.
Interment is to follow at Little Cemetery with services being under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Wilma, 82, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008 at Seminole Estates Nursing Home, Seminole. She was born March 14, 1926 in Seminole to Lee Darnall and Ethel (Thomas) Darnall.
She was a graduate of Seminole High School and in 1946 she married Ervin Plank in Seminole, and in 1969 she married Harry Tappe in Shawnee. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Wilma worked for 45 years as a meat wrapper in the Nichols and Best Yet grocery stores, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Ideal Street Baptist Church since 1948, and she was active in the Ideal Street Ladies support of American soldiers; and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Her parents; brother, Roy Darnall; and sister, Edith Miller Fox, also preceded her in death.
Surviving Wilma is her son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Kathy Plank of Seminole; one grandchild, Bryan Steele of Virginia Beach, Va.; one great-grandchild, Landen Steele of Meridian, Miss.; nephew, Kertis Fox; and cousin, Donnie Stallings.
Pallbearers for the services will be: Floyd Griffin, Terry Casey, Glen Azlin, Jack Webber, Larry Cathy and Jason Soword.
Helen Tate
Funeral services for Seminole resident Helen Marie Tate were scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah.
Interment followed at the Highland Cemetery in Okemah.
Services are under the direction of Park Brothers Funeral Home and were officiated by Rev. Manuel Parker.
Helen Marie Tate passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 in Shawnee at the age of 67. She was born Jan. 2, 1941 in Okemah to Leonard Albert and Hazel Marie (Odom) Kennedy.
Mrs. Tate had been a resident of the Cromwell area most of her life and was a resident of Seminole for the past three years.
She was a loving housewife and mother who enjoyed her grandchildren and visiting with people.
Her parents; her husband, Marvin Tate; one brother, Bob Kennedy; one sister, Peggy Hodges; one son, Sammy Ray Sala; and one grandson, Christopher Michael Sala, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Mike Sala of Shawnee; one daughter, Tammy Tipton and husband Jerry of Seminole; one brother, Sammy Williamson and wife Lois of Henryetta; one sister, Ann Williams and husband Burt of Manford; and four grandchildren: Ryan Tipton, Stephanie Sala, Brandon Sala, and Dylan Tipton.
Serving as pallbearers were: Jerry Tipton, Ryan Tipton, Kevin Keesee, Gage Keesee, Rick Kennedy and Randall Kennedy.
Honorary bearers included Tommy Hodges and Mike Sala.
Virgil Taylor
Funeral services for Virgil Harrison Taylor, Jr., are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mowery Funeral Service Chapel, Owasso, with Rev. James Davis officiating.
Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Konawa Cemetery.
Taylor, 61 of Owasso, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas to Virgil H. and Mayme Marie (Davis) Sr.
When he was four, the family moved to the Asher area and it was there that he received his education, graduating Asher High School in 1965.
He graduated from East Central University in 1970 and received his Master’s degree in 1975.
On Aug. 10, 1968 he married Sharyn K. Sharp in Konawa and they made their home in Ada.
After receiving his Master’s degree, they made their home in Idabel for 13 years before moving to Owasso in June 1989.
Taylor worked as a field services coordinator for the department of Rehabilitation and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
His parents preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife of the home; two children: Virgil H. Taylor III of Stillwater, and Kalynn F. Smith of Collinsville; one brother, Bernard B. Taylor of Arab, Ala.; and 11 grandchildren.
Jimmy Tebe
Services for Sasakwa resident Jimmy Tebe are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Tallahassee Church with Rev. Buddy Harjo, assisted by Art Tanyan.
Interment is to follow at Tebe Cemetery with services being under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka.
Tebe, 57, died Friday, June 20, 2008 at Elmwood Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 6, 1950 in Oklahoma City to Arthur and Onis (Harjo) Tebe.
He attended Ardmore Schools for 11 years and he worked at Oakridge Nursing Home as an aide for a number of years. Tebe was a member of Tallahassee Presbyterian Church.
His parents; sister, Viola Tebe; and brothers: Bobby Tebe, Henry Harjo, Benny Tebe and Loyd Tebe, preceded him in death.
Surviving is sister, Lucy Harjo of Sasakwa and brothers: Vernon Tebe and Paul Tebe, both of Konawa.
Pallbearers for the services will be: Arthur Tebe, Joseph Tebe, Jacob Tebe, Allen Yahola, Leo Moppin and Steven Tebe.
James Thomas
Funeral services for former Seminole resident John D. Thomas were held Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park in Sebastopol, Calif.
Thomas died at 11:58 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 in Santa Rosa where he had lived since moving there in 2005.
Born in Bristow, to John Wesley and Myrtle Thomas on May 1, 1924, he soon moved to and was raised in Seminole.
He joined the Herald as an advertising salesman in July 1969 after 10 years as advertising manager of the Moore County News in Dumas.
He held a similar post for five years with the Tulia Herald after 12 years managing retail stores for C.R. Anthony Co., in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
Thomas served 3 1/2 years with the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor after graduation from Seminole High School .
Following his discharge, he attended Seminole Junior College and continued studies at Oklahoma A&M.
For the next four years, he worked alongside his father as a fireman in Seminole.
He was promoted to Herald general manager on July 27, 1979, upon the retirement of James B. "Jim" Oswald, and later was elevated to publisher.
He, in turn, retired and handed over the reins of the newspaper to Rollie Hyde in 1990.
Selected Plainview ’s Man of the Year for 1986, Thomas was a steady promoter of the area and its organizations, not only personally but through special promotional advertising in the Herald.
When Wal-Mart announced plans to build a distribution center, Thomas — then a member of the Plainview-Hale County Industrial Foundation board — was instrumental in spearheading the community drive to purchase land on which the plant is now located.
In recognition of those and other efforts, the Industrial Foundation named him its Volunteer of the Year in 1988.
Honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest honor, Thomas served on the boards of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Wee Care Child Center, Hale County Chapter of the American Heart Association, Meals on Wheels, South Plains Better Business Bureau, Plainview Crime Stoppers, Texas Press Association, West Texas Press Association and Panhandle Press Association and the First United Methodist Church where he and his wife, Polly, taught youth Sunday school classes for over 40 years.
He was a passionate supporter of Plainview ’s community food pantry, the Faith In Sharing House.
Thomas was awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree from Wayland Baptist University for his work in the Spanning the Centuries campaign and support of the community.
He was accorded the title of Publisher Emeritus upon his retirement from The Herald.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Polly Ann; a sister, Wanda Kime of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Janie Whitehead of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a son, Bob Thomas and of Lenexa, Kan.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Piney Thomas
Longtime Seminole resident Piney Ravey (Johnson) Thomas passed away on Sunday, Dec. 28, in Shawnee, at the age of 84.
She was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Boatman, to Eldridge "Ed" and Goldie Rae (Hossman) Johnson.
She was a member of the Bowlegs Baptist Church. She loved to dance, read and be with her grandkids.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Northtrip and husband Bob, of Seminole, and Patsy Ann Mowery, of Shawnee; four sisters, Virginia Shuler, of Oklahoma City, Vada Knolls, of Oregon, Imogene Hobbs, of Arizona and Geraldine Carnes, of Muskogee. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Terry Northrip and wife Jacque, John Northrip, Eric Mowery and wife DeLora, and Rene Obar; eight great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Goldie Johnson; one daughter, Gloria Edwards; four brothers, Dick, Ray, Frank and Clarence Johnson; and one sister, Lucille Long.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Little Cemetery with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Terry Northrip, John Northrip, Eric Mowery, Zac Northrip, Larry Adam and Nealon Adams.
Cecil Thompson
There were prior funeral services held at First Baptist Church, Checotah, for Konawa graduate Cecil Pat Thompson.
Thompson, 87, of Checotah, died Oct. 18, 2007 at Muskogee Regional Hospital. He was born March 10, 1920 in Catersville, Okla., to Pearl Arthur and Boonie Pauline Thompson.
He graduated from Konawa High School in 1940 and in 1946 he married Lillian Barker in Konawa.
Thompson was a World War II Vet and he retired from OG&E in 1985.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Lillian of the home; two sons, Michael Pat Thompson of Tulsa and Jerry Lee Thompson of Checotah; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nadine Smith of Holdenville.
Jacob Thompson
Jacob "Jake" Thompson was born on Dec. 15, 1919, in Sperry, to parents Frank Thompson and Elizabeth (Ruckman) Thompson.
He lived most of his life in Seminole and worked in the oilfield as a driller. He married Mary Lee (Summers) Thompson, on Nov. 4, 1939.
He moved to southeast Oklahoma ten years ago and made his home in the Felker community since that time. He was a member of Felker Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the Felker Quartet.
He was a bass singer. He fished and played dominos.
Surviving him are, his wife Mary Lee Thompson of the home; one son, David Thompson, of Grand Prairie, Texas; one daughter Susan Songer, of Valliant; one brother Donald Henry Thompson, of San Antonio, Texas; five grand children; nine great grandchildren, and two great, great grand grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, one son Jerome Andrew Thompson, two sisters, Peninnah Houser and Louise Schoner and one grandson, Rance Lee Thompson.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. –7p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m., at Felker Freewill Baptist Church, in Valliant. Bill Haddock will officiate, with Jason Myers assisting. Interment will follow at Moran Cemetery, in Valliant.
